Are you weird? It's time to Listen and Learn English (Spontaneously)

Whatever happens over the next few moments

is completely spontaneous.

It is completely ad-libbed.

I like that expression.

If you ad-lib something it means

you are doing it without any preparation...

it was not rehearsed.

The thing you have just done was thought up...

at that moment.

So you might say that this is spontaneous,

ad-libbed,

I am vamping.

Oh I like that one as well.

If you Vamp it means you

make it up as you go along..

you are doing it on (or by) the seat of your pants.

The seat of your pants...

you are doing it completely spontaneously.

Just like this you see!

I'm standing in the garden

and being attacked by insects...

they're flying all over the place

and I've not rehearsed any of this

and do you know what?

It feels amazing.

Some people might say it's a little bit strange...

what a very strange thing to do Mr Duncan.

We like to see our presenters

polished and professional.

Well sometimes I think

people like to see things that are unrehearsed

and unpolished.

Such as this.

So everything you are looking at now

has not been prepared.

It has not been planned.

It is just me talking...

off the top of my head.

Whether it's a good idea or not remains to be seen.

It might also seem a little weird.

Now there is a word we often hear used

to describe people who do not conform.

If you don't conform to a certain way of behaving,

or maybe if you don't conform to society's rules,

you might be described as a little bit weird.

A little bit odd perhaps.

I know I have over the years people have called me

strange, odd... they have  described me as a freak even.

How could you do that?

How could you describe this as 'a freak'?

Please I implore you...

rethink what you consider to be this.

Of course what people see as weird

and strange quite often is their own point of view...

it is their perspective.

You might describe it as their 'subjective' view.

So when we talk about something that is 'subjective'...

we are saying that that is  the individual's point of view.

Or maybe their opinion...  their personal point of view,

which of course means that  they might not be correct.

They might be misunderstanding  your whole personality.

They might have no idea as to  what you are actually trying to do,

or achieve

and that is something that has  followed me through my life.

You see... spontaneous!

I wasn't expecting my neighbour's crazy dog

to start barking like that,

but there it is, it's doing it and  there's nothing I can do about it.

So the next time someone  calls you 'weird' or 'strange',

or 'eccentric'...

tell them you are not strange...

you are 'interesting'.
