So to be helpful is useful.

To be a hindrance is to hinder interfere.

You hold that person back.

But for most of the time I was joking.

a lot.

I try my best.

If I wasn't helping you, I'd be in the living room. That's true.

If you weren't helping me, you would be somewhere else.

Might actually be out in the garden.

You may have been aware of it or may not.

Either way, I will now tell you what is happening.

Today is a special day.

It is Remembrance Sunday, Remembrance

Day here in the UK and what we normally do on this day.

Now I have to explain that the proper Remembrance

Day is always on the 11th of November.

But of course Remembrance Sunday

always falls on the nearest Sunday

to the 11th, which was yesterday.

But today, of course, is the proper Remembrance Sunday.

So this morning everyone gathered in London

near the very famous

and for many reasons, war Memorial called the Cenotaph.

And there it is this morning with everyone gathered.

And as usual, at 11 a.m.,

people will go into a two minute's

silence every Remembrance Sunday.

So that happened this morning.

And people then will wait.

And one by one,

members of the royal family

and politicians will each lay a wreath,

a remembrance wreath at the Cenotaph.

And this morning he was there.

Yes, King Charles was there this morning putting his wreath down.

Now, I think this is the second time

he's done it because he did it last year, didn't he, Steve?

Well, you mean when the queen wasn't very well?

At least in one previous year when the queen was alive, he stepped in.

So last year was the first time he did it officially, and this year is the second time.

So a lot of people this morning gathering and they were all paying their respects to those who died.

Now, this used to be always for the for the First World War.

But nowadays, people often use this day

to remember those who fell in all wars past.

And I suppose I should say present as well.

So all those who lost their lives in all wars,

we have

Remembrance Sunday and it was a very solemn occasion.

Fortunately, the rain stopped

because if you're standing around for a long time, Mr.

Steve, there is nothing worse than getting wet.

And we have been getting a lot of rain, haven't we?

Mr. Duncan It's raining as we speak outside right now.

It won't stop.

It's been a very rainy autumn.

but of course, you always associate,

Remembrance Sunday with sort of bad weather.

A bit like Guy Fawkes Night we had recently.

So. So this time of year, it tends to be very damp and cool.

And yes, everything really does look like autumn.

It is a very autumnal day today, I have to say. Yes.

Duncan, this this this date today, Remembrance Sunday is a chance.

It's why we have two minute's silence just to remember all the people that died in conflict.

Two, particularly for this first and Second World War to ensure

that we carry on

with our values and our life.

And we weren't taken over by by horrible people.

And yeah, fighting evil really, isn't it?

That's what it's as.

It's perceived as those who who wish to undermine civility,

I suppose, or the civil way of life, I suppose, Although yesterday

in London it wasn't very civil because lots of people at the moment are having disputes and arguments

and fighting because a lot of people are divided on their opinion

of current news events, which we won't go into

because this is not the time or place.

Very interesting, Mr.

Duncan, we watched, didn't we, last night, a lovely programme, a lovely documentary

about the about monkeys in Sri Lanka. Yes.

We decided to do something that did not involve

watching the news or listening to people complaining or fighting or arguing.

So we watched this lovely documentary

made by Disney, all about these little macaque monkeys.

Macaque monkeys.

I was going to make Mr. Jenkins so cute.

They were lovely and cute. It was. It was.

I went to bed happy instead of watching the news

and watching programmes about things going wrong or film,

violent film

went to bed happy smiley and had a good night's sleep.

I think that makes a big difference.

But the point I was going to make about this was that they followed the lies of this troop of

of monkeys, these macaque monkeys, and they had their territory,

which is on this sort of big rock and a rival gang,

you could say, or rival troop of of monkeys

attacked them and took over their territory.

And it just shows you

doesn't matter what species you are.

Everyone's always fighting to try and take over somebody else

or get their land or get their possessions or something. Yes.

So monkeys do it, Humans do it.

We all do it. It's it's part of our nature.

And fortunately, although some people might say we're not very far apart

in our behaviour, sometimes from from from the wild animals.

But it is true many animals are terror tutorial.

They will insist on having their own space birds.

Birds are very territorial.

They often hang around or fly around in large flocks

or they will divide up during the breeding season, especially

so when the breeding season is around, when all of the birds

are preparing to find their lovely mate, they will become very territorial.

One of the worst and most violent birds you might not believe. This

is the robin

that lovely little friendly robin.

One of the worst birds for

for being territorial is that lovely little friendly Robin.

And they will actually fight another bird to the death.

They will actually kill another bird.

These monkeys were, weren't they. They were, right. Yes.

This, this true took over one of them.

One of the other monkeys died in the fight.

And then but then later on, the people, the monkey

originally their went back and there was another battle and they got their territory back again.

I mean, it was quite incredible to watch how similar their behaviour was to humans.

We are so close

to monkeys, apes, chimpanzees

that think the chimpanzee is the closest to us in terms of its

genetic heritage.

Yeah, it's like Mr..

Mr. Lomax, like Mr. Lomax, but.

But yeah, so it was an interesting programme to watch and quite pertinent

based on, on, on obviously Remembrance Sunday and all that.

Yeah,

but there we go.

All animals fight for their territory.

It is true.

All fight to get somebody else's. Yes.

Because it's all fight over one individual,

maybe a mate or maybe two males.

Well will want the same girlfriend and they will fight

just like we do on a Saturday night outside the pubs.

And of course they're after resources, aren't they?

Said those monkeys wanted that particular patch of ground because it had a lovely fig tree,

a giant fig tree with lots of fruit on it, lots availability, food, so that they want resources.

And that's what we do is he means that we we take over somebody else's country

because there are resources there that we want.

Yes, it's a bigger cell.

It's slightly more dramatic when we do it, though.

Yes. But I'm just saying the principle is the same argument these days.

That's not an argument there.

As I'm just saying this.

It's interesting how how much more aggressive we tend to be,

even though we are supposed to be civilised.

Well, underneath, you see, we still got a monkey brain.

Well there's a book written because there's something about the monkey brain and how that controls this.

I've read that.

It's very interesting that we've got this this mischievous.

I mean, it may be true, It might not.

As Catarina says, we haven't we have a satellite yet.

It's very much I am now is very mischievous and spiteful.

You should have seen them when they were going into people's homes.

They were wrecking their houses for food.

Well, it happens all over the place. These monkeys are annoying.

Thailand also has them as well.

And Japan.

Japan also has monkeys.

I think they are also macaques and they and they are also very mischievous.

They got to get up to all sorts of things.

In fact, in English, we often describe a person

who is mischievous or naughty as a cheeky monkey.

We will say you was you are such a cheeky monkey.

by the way, today we are looking at exclamation

marks, exclamation.

It is something that happens a lot in English, but I think and we were talking about this yesterday

when we were having our meal in town, a lot of people misuse

the exclamation mark.

It's a very simple thing, but the exclamation mark

is something that people often overuse

or use in the wrong situation.

So we will be looking at that today.

by the way, you might also notice there is a poppy next to Mr.

Steve that is also connected to Remembrance Sunday and also Remembrance Day,

because a lot of people wear those rhubarb makes a comment and

I'm going to have to say good

to correct you on this rhubarb.

The poppy is nothing to do with politics.

It's not a right wing ideology. It is.

It is.

The poppy is a symbol of a dead soldier.

Well, yes, it's simple.

Well, anyone that died in the war, it's more than that, though,

because it's, of course, from from the poppy fields where many of the soldiers lost their lives.

That's it. I think it was the Somme in France.

So So that particular area is where the poppies will rise.

And so it became symbolic of those

who fell during the First World War.

I always find it amazing that they they used to call the First World

War the Great War.

There's nothing great about war now.

I think they mean big, large, dramatic.

So it is interesting how you can use that word in different ways.

Something is great.

It means it's good.

It can also be something big or oversized, a great rock

or you had a great time.

So it is interesting how that word can be used.

So people yes, it was adopted, as you say, Mr.

Duncan, the poppy was adopted after the First World War

because so many people died

on the battlefields in France.

Millions, I think it was hundreds of thousands of soldiers

died in the trenches and the poppy because all the poppies grow there.

Wearing a poppy is a sign that you are remembering a soldier that died in the war.

It's nothing to do with politics.

It just that although it does often become political, people will make it political.

But it's not, especially when you don't wear one

every year in this country, you can guarantee at some point

one person will complain because a famous celebrity

or a well-known person was not wearing their poppy.

So it is ironic that a symbol of freedom is often

used as as a weapon against those

who don't follow those procedures.

So there is a strange irony when people start

telling other people that they must wear a poppy.

You can look at the fact that you have the freedom not to do it.

You can look it up on YouTube.

We are almost halfway through November already now.

I can't believe how fast this year has gone by.

I think this year has gone by really quickly.

It seemed to go slowly at the beginning and then suddenly

the year went by very quickly.

So November and then we have December.

We are coming towards that special season.

Some people celebrate it, some people don't.

But it is time to have fun.

I believe also at the moment Diwali is being celebrated as well.

So so the the Festival of Light is what they call that.

So if you are doing that, I hope you have lots and lots of fun

and of course lots of delicious food.

cooked curry,

but I haven't been invited yet.

I think you can sort of.

I have been into places where they've been celebrating in shops and local places like that.

Haven't been handed some Samoas or something like that, which is always very nice

because we've, we live very close to an area where there are,

there are lots of different cultures living nearby to each other.

So we would often see this in Wolverhampton

because there are lots of communities in Wolverhampton

from various areas and also

of course various religious beliefs.

So they will all have their festivals and that's one of the things I always remember about Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton is a bustling,

busy metropolis, I have to say is the century

that says this is the poppy, a funeral flower in the oak.

I don't think it is.

I don't know. I've never seen it used.

It is used, it is used of course on wreaths,

but that also is connected to this particular period, which is Remembrance Sunday.

Yes, but you might be confusing it, of course,

with roses, which look very similar.

So roses and poppies, the petals can look very similar.

Funeral flowers in the UK, lilies.

Lilies are very popular to put in in bunches of flowers for a funeral.

I mean, you can put anything in there, but

if you go to funerals, you usually have.

Nice, but yeah, lilies are quite poor.

My mother never liked lilies in the house because she said it always reminded her of funerals.

Probably not because they've got a very strong smell, haven't they?

Lilies.

And they can stain your clothes. The pollen.

And some people don't like the smell either, because they are.

They all quite pungent, very strong.

Yes. Lilies are tend to be associated with funerals,

but I don't think they used as much as they used to be. No.

They pop poppies, generally speaking, grow.

They are picked, maybe they are displayed.

They are often used in paintings or pictures

because if they signify chickens with the colour, because of course,

it is very hard to escape these days how colour

has become very important in symbolism.

So we often look at many colours of having as having

certain symbols or meanings.

So we often see red as maybe anger

or quite often violence or maybe even death.

So we often see red as is as an angry, fierce colour.

And of course the poppy being red is the colour of blood.

So that's another bit of symbolism

in with that remembrance as well. Yes.

So it is interesting, it always interests me how these things come around every year.

So you can always guarantee as as October comes to an end,

people always start talking about the Remembrance

Day and the poppies and things like that.

So every year in this country people always start talking about it as well.

You don't have to wear a poppy.

Rhubarb never is. Nobody's forcing people to wear one.

It's just

the ordinary person in the street.

Nobody is going to come up to you and say, Why aren't you wearing a poppy?

It's just on TV.

Celebrities go on TV sometimes

or a newsreader at this time of the year and isn't wearing one.

Then people, what your stupid social media will start to make comments.

It's not stupid, but that's how I make my living.

Social media.

I'm talking about like Twitter and just like that.

But ordinary people in the street, I mean, I don't I mean, I will give money,

but I don't often wear a poppy.

No, because I just don't want to.

But I know nobody's nobody's

going to criticise the average person in the street if they're not wearing a poppy, although I did find it

interesting yesterday that there was a lot of violence yesterday in London,

and I did notice many of the ones that were supporting the Cenotaph

were not wearing poppies,

which I thought was very interesting because they were so aggressive

and so and so angry and yet very few of them were actually wearing their poppies.

Well, that's it.

The right wing people won't wear upon me.

Well, okay.

I'm just saying they often do it because they're anti anything and anything that's and,

you know, they'll protest against anything as well.

The far left, of course, red says Francesca, is also the colour of passion

with just red roses.

So in some some cultures as well

then red is a sign of passion as well.

You know, the red blood coursing through your veins, excitement.

Well again, it's love hearts. Yes.

So, so it is interesting.

So yes, I suppose I said anger earlier on,

but of course, Red can also symbolise love.

Yeah.

I mean, they used to be a thing with men at work.

What kind of tie do you wear?

What is that saying about you?

If you I remember we used to have sort of training on

not training, but sort of advice on what to wear at work with customers.

And if you wore a red tie, it was seen as something

that could make your customers a bit agitated.

But then it gave you a sort of it was almost like a symbol of power.

Okay.

But if you wore a blue tie or a green tie,

it was, you know, you were sort of not so aggressive.

So if you wear a red tie, maybe you're putting the thrusting salesman type,

you know,

this is what you're saying.

I've got a red tie.

I'm, you know, I'm important and thrusting.

I want to sell you something.

So I used to be.

So of course, men don't really wear ties anymore.

No, I was going to say.

But these days now, of course, red things, red caps and also red ties are often

attributed to

maybe Republicans in the US, say, or maybe Donald Trump.

So he has kind of hijacked red clothing.

Now, I remember a few months ago we went to see a comedy show in Stafford

where I used to live and I was wearing my my red hat.

It had nothing written on it, but it was red.

And the comedian who was performing picked me

out of the audience and said, look, look at them.

There is wearing his his Maga maga hat.

And I said, It's not a MAGA hat, it's just a red hat.

It's just red.

And he was making fun of me.

Beatrice's car is red.

It's a cute, cute car.

Yes, Red suit.

Certain. It's funny and it is used to talk about

different colours, suit cars, particularly cars in different ways.

A smaller car or a sports car.

It looks good in red.

I mean, Ferraris, of course, are always associated with red,

that sort of, you know, Italian sort of

spirit driving fast.

Enzo Ferrari, you know, and all that kind of thing that

that, that Ferrari red fact if you see a Ferrari, even even now,

if I see a Ferrari in any other colour but red, it looks very disappointing.

A lot of people now get the Ferraris in grey or something like that.

I mean how boring you spent all that money and you've got you've just

you just got this bland colour,

you know, Ferrari is a red.

But anyway that's my, my opinion. Yeah.

That was.

But the bigger the car is the worse it looks in a bright

colour I think depending on the car like a saloon cars.

You had a mercedes S-Class.

Okay Steve, you even have it in red. It would look very odd.

This is now turning into something else.

Or as a fiesta or something or a sports car.

It's very nice and red, but it's interesting how the colours of cars over

the years have changed because I remember growing up

I used to see all different colours of cars on the road, some of them very bright.

You would see yellow cars, not necessarily sports cars,

but they were still yellow or green or bright blue.

And quite often they were, they were very bright

and even floral in colour.

And then for a very long time everyone stopped having colourful cars

and then they just have black, white, silver

or grey for a very long time.

But I've noticed recently, I know you want to put in, but I've noticed recently

the colourful cars have started coming back again.

I've seen quite a few cars on the road that are that are brighter now.

These aren't sports cars, they're just your average cars.

So I think people are slowly going back to having colourful cars again.

Well, I'll tell you the the colour that's come back into fashion is green for a car.

Lots of people are getting green cars now.

That was always seen when I was growing up a green car was seen as unlucky.

If you had

a green car that I was associated with, having more accidents,

weather, the weather, the statistics back that up or not, I don't know.

But of course, if you've got a green car and you're driving on a country road,

you can sort of just blend into the into the trees maybe.

But what you're driving, are you driving in the sky or.

Well, I'm just saying, you know, if in certain angles

you might not see a green car because you've got trees and fields,

you know, it might not stand out, but in fact, grey cars don't stand out at all.

But then everyone's got driving lights now, so it doesn't matter.

Yeah,

you could have a red car and then you'd never know that you had an accident.

Where red cars do go, The statistics show

red cars have more accidents because they're normally bought by people who want to drive fast.

That was just a road closure.

That was just that was just a joke.

That was Steve I just told you.

So as I say, I'm wasting my time

anyway. Yes.

Anyway, talk about exclamation. Exclamation marks.

we had to say goodbye to some neighbours

that have been living behind our house for the past six months.

We had to say goodbye to the cows.

They have gone. They have been away.

They have been taken away by the farmer to another place.

we hope it's not the slaughterhouse.

But they have gone.

So for the next couple of minutes, let us remember our lovely,

lovely neighbours our bovine neighbours.

I think they've gone sadly to cow heaven.

As low as they're sacred in India.

They're just lovely, gentle creatures.

You just have a little bit of them.

You just have a little bit off the side.

As long as I can't see where it came from,

as long as it's not walking around in the field looking into my eyes.

I don't know why many celebrations, religious celebrations or any celebrations.

In fact, quite often there are lights involved.

I think it's lovely Fireworks, lights, maybe even fires as well.

Exclamation mark.

It is interesting, actually, when we look at the English language, there are many varied

uses of punctuation.

And of course, when we look at the exclamation mark, there it is underneath,

we often talk about punctuation.

So when you are typing or writing or composing a message

or maybe a script or maybe you are writing to someone,

maybe you are looking for a job,

quite often you will use certain types of punctuation.

The most obvious ones, of course, is the full stop.

It's just that the full stop that comes at the end of a sentence.

So that's the most common punctuation.

But of course we also have this guy here,

the exclamation mark, which is often used incorrectly

or it's used in situation where you don't need to use it.

And I think sometimes, especially in writing, people get very carried away.

In fact, I think you mentioned that as well.

We will talk about that a little bit later on.

So when we talk about exclamation,

there is the word exclamation

and I've put an exclamation mark at the end.

So you could say exclamation is the urgency

that is often stressed in words,

quite often vocally, you will exclaim,

If you write something down

and you want to show that that thing is important, you want to use stress to show

that something is is needed or it must be done.

Or maybe a person is angry, you will often use the exclamation mark.

So the is what we call it in

grammar, in English grammar, we call it the imperative,

something that must be done,

something that has to be done, something urgent.

You are using the exclamation to show that emotion.

However, it is possible

to misuse it quite often warnings as well.

Steve So I think this is the most common type

of use of exclamation.

So you can think of many situations

where where you would you would have a warning.

Would you say, yes, many road signs

if they're warning you of something, if there's a danger ahead,

then you

will have an exclamation mark after whatever it is that they're warning you about on the sign

that's quite popular, it might say, you know, danger,

Slippery Road ahead or something like that.

I don't think that's an actual sign, but that's an example.

Watch out is an exclamation.

It is something that you might write.

It is something you might say.
