here is an interesting word that you might hear being used from time to time

the word is cliche it sounds French that's because it is French however we

often use this word in English as well the word cliche is a noun that means a

phrase or opinion that is overused and unoriginal.

to show a lack of imagination by coming out with an overused thought or opinion can be

described as using a cliche

a cliched thing is something that is

unoriginal and predictable you know what is going to happen before it occurs a

worn-out notion is a cliche a story might have a cliche at the end the

conclusion of a story is obvious and not unexpected

a predictable and unoriginal thing is a cliche some people see life is a cliche

they know how it started and they are pretty sure how it will end the word

itself derived from the French word for stereotype a familiar thing that holds

no surprise is a cliche it has been done before so many times it is...

it's time to take a look at another buzzword a buzzword is a word or

phrase that is popular during a certain time or is generally used today's

buzzword is privilege the word privilege is generally used as a noun and means a

special right advantage or immunity granted or available only to a

particular person or group in this sense the word is used to show inequality or a

certain and bias towards a particular social group some people see privilege

as a thing enjoyed only by a certain race or someone with a high social

standing it always seems to be the privileged few who get into a good

university the privilege might be there from birth examples of which include

being born in a particular country to a certain social class or of a certain

race the topic of privilege has become a hot subject over the years the

perception that one social group has more rights than another often relates

to the notion of privilege we can also use privilege to express the honour of

doing something it is a privilege for me to be here with you all again another

use of privilege relates to the right of a lawyer or official to refuse to

divulge or reveal confidential informations the private or confidential

conversations between a professional and their client can be classed as

privileged information it cannot be disclosed the phrase check

your privilege is used to suggest that someone should recognise that their

attitudes or views reflect the fact that they are in a privileged or advantageous

position because of their particular social category or categories to which

they belong for example there is the concept of

'white privilege' which suggests an inherent bias or favouritism towards

those who are Caucasian the original meaning of the word privilege literally

means private law and comes from Latin with the original definition expressing

a particular law affecting an individual

do you know someone who is pretentious have you ever met someone who tries hard

to appear sophisticated and superior if so then you have met a pretentious

person to be pretentious means to appear superior by affecting an air of

sophistication and intellectual prowess a pretentious person will go out of

their way to appear better than others by displaying a certain style or

behaving in a particular way they are putting on a fake front so as to appear

better than other people their pretense is literally a sham it is not real they

are affecting a certain manner with the hope of impressing others around them to

affect is to put on something that is not really you

you are acting in a certain way did you see the way she was dressed in that

kimono with those chopsticks in her hair how pretentious a pretentious person

will often be picked out by others however they will rarely be told to

their face just how pretentious they appear it takes a lot of courage to tell

someone that they are pretentious he always likes to use big words to look

clever one day I'll tell him how pretentious he really looks the action

of showing pretense is pretension a person might express emotions that they

do not really feel they might say things that they don't really believe they

express opinions just to appear educated and enlightened a thing can be described

as pretentious if it is trying to gain attention by appearing more important

than it really is it is trying to gain a greater merit
