However, my advice is always the same advice that I give.

If you make English part of your life,

you will find that grammar and new words.

Both of those things will come to you.

They will be things that will slowly build

so you can't learn English quickly.

And there are people who say that you can, but they are lying because you can't.

You can't learn English fast.

You can't learn it in just a few weeks.

It is impossible because then you have to put it

into practical situations

and that takes time.

It takes time.

So sometimes when you are learning something,

sometimes you need a little bit of patience as well.

to the beginning of

another word.

added to give a different meaning,

or maybe to to show or highlight

the differences between words.

So that's what we're looking at today for the next few moments.

So I suppose, first of all, I should say, what is a prefix?

What is a prefix, Mr.

Duncan In case you don't know, a prefix is a word added to the beginning of another word.

Often a prefix changes the use or meaning of an already defined word.

So you will add a word to the beginning,

and it is quite usual

for this to happen in the English language.

So I will be giving you some short

demonstrations and examples

of these particular prefixes in a moment.

The prefix under and over are added

so as to show an opposite state.

So quite often when we are using under and over,

we are showing opposites in meaning.

Because of course, well, I suppose if we look at the words

under and over, they are actually opposites.

They are opposite words.

So here we go.

For example, we have a simple word cook.

The word cook might be prefixed

with under, for example,

the word cook might be prefixed with under.

This means that the cooking time is less than usual.

So if you are under cook,

it means you are cooking something

for less time than you normally would.

So under quite often means shorter or less.

I know

it can be used as a preposition, but in this case it is being used as a prefix

to show that something is less than it normally is.

So for example, the word cook,

which means to put something in the oven

or maybe something you are going to cook,

maybe you are going to heat it,

maybe you are going to fry that particular piece of food.

So if you are under cook,

it means you cook it for a shorter

period of time than you normally would.

Something is undercooked.

So that's what we are saying.

We are saying that particular thing has been under cooked.

It is not cooked as much as it normally is.

It is undercooked.

And then we have the opposite because that's what we're talking about.

To overcook something means that the food has been cooked longer

or more than it should have been.

So in that sense, you have over cooked that food.

It has been cooked too much.

Maybe the food has been burnt.

It does happen sometimes in the morning.

Mr. Steve, when he is getting ready, he is preparing his breakfast.

He will often over cook

the porridge and sometimes he will burn the porridge.

So if you cook something for too long

or if you cook it too much,

we can say that you over cook the food.

You are cooking the food longer

or more than it should have been.

Quite often with meat, some people will say that meat,

if you cook meat in the oven or roast

the meat, as a lot of people do,

you can under cook the meat.

Quite often we will describe that as rare.

So if you cook meat rare, it means you undercooked.

And if you overcook something,

then maybe it is well done, or maybe in some cases burnt.

So we often see in that situation, we often see the word under

as possibly negative and over

as negative.

So they can both be negative at some point, something that is undercooked

might actually make you ill.

Something that is overcooked

might not be edible.

You might not be able to eat it because it's burnt, it's too cooked,

it's overcooked.

But of course you can undercooked something

if you want it not to be too cooked.

So if you don't want to to have something that's too

cooked, you could under cook.

And then, of course, if you overcook something,

some people like their food to be slightly overcooked.

So you can see there is a difference.

But quite often we can use both of those things as negative

or positive.

To put it briefly,

in general terms, overcook is too long

and a cook is too short,

although we can use these as positive as well

too undercooked to cook

something too short or not enough to overcook.

You have cooked it for too long or too much

so. Here we go.

Let's have some examples now of different types of

uses of the word under and over.

Here we go to.

Well, expose

an interesting word.

So first of all, we have the word at the top expose,

which means to show or reveal

you expose something, you are showing something

or you reveal something, you expose something.

And then we have

the use of under and over

to under expose

is to make something unclear or dark.

It can't be seen.

Clearly, it's very hard to see you under expose

something quite often in photography.

If a person wants to show

a moody scene, maybe in the dark,

quite often they will under expose the photograph.

They will make it appear dark and unclear.

And then of course, you can have the opposite, which is over expose.

If you overexpose something then it's too light.

Or maybe you are making something appear

clear or obvious.

You over expose

quite often in photography if you have too much light in your photograph,

then it will be over exposed.

You have too much light.

So in those particular situation lens,

quite often they are used as negative and positive.

However, it depends on the situation.

So both of these can also be used either

positively or negatively, depending on the situation.

Too underexposed to make unclear or dark

overexpose to make clear

or maybe bright or even too bright.

There is too much light.

It is over exposed.

The next word we have is achieve.

Achieve the word achieve means, attain or win.

You gain something, something that comes your way

quite often because of certain actions.

Maybe you have worked hard.

Maybe you've set an exam, you achieve something,

something you attain something you win.

And then we can put the prefix under and over in front of those words.

So first of all, we have under achieve.

If you under achieve, it means you do badly or you fail.

So if you do badly, if you fail

at the thing you have tried to do,

or maybe in life, if you've never succeeded,

if you've always failed,

we often say that that person

has under achieved, under achieved.

So to under achieve is to do badly or fail.

And then we have the opposite over achieve

to do exceptionally well

or above the standard that is often recognised.

So quite often a person who over achieves is a person

who does much better than expected

or maybe much better than is required.

And it is possible.

And this is the thing that always amazes me.

Maybe you are going for a job, maybe you are applying for a job.

Sometimes it is possible to be over

achieving in your life.

Maybe you have done too well.

It is possible to over achieve.

So some people see that as a negative thing.

Although for most of the time and I think for most people

it is seen as positive.

So if you under achieve it means you often do badly or you fail

and overachieve is to do exceptionally well.

I like those two.

Here's another word.

This is one that you might not be aware of, but it is a real word.

The word is welcome.

Welcome.

The word well m means bury or submerge.

Maybe you push something

under the ground or beneath

the sea, quite often used in battle,

when ships on the ocean are maybe attacking each other.

You well on a ship, you tip the ship over,

you capsize eyes or submerge the ship.

Well, guess what?

We have prefixes that can be added to that word.

We have the word underwhelm.

Underwhelm?

If you are underwhelmed by something,

it means you are un impressed and impressed

something a person is doing.

Maybe they are performing something and you think

That's not very good?

That's not very good at all. I don't like it.

underwhelming.

You feel underwhelmed.

Maybe you feel nothing.

Here's another one.

The next word is react and we can put under

and also over in front of that word,

and we are adding those to it

under react.

If a person shows

an undue reaction or maybe they don't react,

we can say that they under react,

which means to show little emotion

or maybe no emotion,

no reaction.

Their response

is almost

zero.

Nothing to under react is to show little

or no response to something.

And then we have overreact

a person who shows too much emotion,

or maybe they react too strongly

about something they over react.

This happens quite often.

Maybe people overreact.

Maybe in a marriage.

Perhaps the husband

comes home late from work,

but he has a very good reason for it.

But the wife gets very angry and she starts shouting and screaming

and chasing him around the house.

But he's done nothing wrong.

We can say that the the wife is over reacting.

She is reacting too much to the situation.

And, of course, the roles can be reversed.

Just in case anyone's wondering, Mr.

Duncan, sometimes the husband can overreact.

Sometimes that happens as well.

So to under react

and over react, here's another one play.

exaggerated.

Here's another one.

We are coming up towards the end.

The next word is use.

Use to use

something is to apply or utilise se.

So if you use something you are applying something,

you are doing something with a certain action or maybe an object.

You use that thing.

Well, we can have the prefix under

and over at the start of that word

we can under use something.

If you under use, it means you make little use of something

you don't use something enough.

Something is under used.

So perhaps something that is really useful,

maybe something that is very useful,

but you don't use it very often,

even though it could be

very useful in many situations

to under use something

to make little use of something.

Perhaps you have a talent, maybe you are very good at singing,

but you do not like to show

your singing.

You don't like to let other people listen to your singing voice.

So maybe we can say that you underuse your voice

or you underuse your talent.

You don't use it enough.

You end use that thing.

And then of course we can overuse something.

They can use something too much, maybe in the way you speak.

I notice these days a lot of people often use the words

like when they're talking, like

they say, like quite a lot.

Like, well, I think these days many people

overuse the word like when they're speaking

or the other one is, you know,

you know,

I do hate that, by the way.

I hate it when a person is talking and they say, you know, at the end of every sentence.

And the other one, of course, is like

like yesterday I went like to the shops like

and I bought some bread and it was like

old bread, like.

So quite often in English, a person might overuse a certain word

when they're speaking to use something to match

is to over use.

You use it too much.

Another one pay.

We all like this word, don't we?

We certainly do.

I love this word very much. I do like it a lot.

Pay, reimburse or recompense.

You pay someone, you give something back to that person.

Maybe you give them some sort of reward

for their effort or that time you pay that person.

Maybe they are working for you in your company

because

everyone has to be paid.

They certainly do.

Of course it is possible to have underpay and overpay.

For example, underpaid means to give less

than is due.

So maybe you underpay your workers.

Your workers should be receiving more money for their hard work.

But you underpay them.

You do not pay them what you should.

And this can happen sometimes if you are working for someone

and they might underpay you,

or maybe they give you less than you should have.

And then we have overpay.

A lot of people these days here in the UK are saying that people

who are working for the government are quite often

overpaid.

If you overpay someone, it means you give them more than they are entitled to.

They are getting paid too much.

They are getting paid more than they should be

to overpay.

You give someone too much money

and if you underpay you don't give them enough.

You give them too little.

Another one.

Ground, ground.

Now I know this particular word can be used in different ways as a verb,

and it can also be used as an expression to show

how something is maybe a position of something.

You might ground something if you are keeping it

on the ground such as an aeroplane.

But in this sense, the word ground is being used

to define floor or soil, the ground.

And then of course we have underground and overground.

Underground means something that is hidden beneath

quite often hidden beneath the ground or may be something that can't be seen,

can also be described as underground.

It is hidden beneath from view.

Very hard to see, very hard to

to to actually find something that is underground.

And quite often when a person is doing something illegally,

we say that it is underground, it is hidden away.

Something illegal is happening,

it is underground, it is hidden from view.

And then we have

overground, which means to be in clear view.

So something is very easy to see.

It is overground or on the surface.

Something is very visible.

Something is easy to see.

Here are two words

that are both using the word under.

However, there is no equivalent of is

no equivalent using over.

So these particular words are only used with the word under.

For example, understand it is a common word

that we often use when a person is realising something,

or if they suddenly know something

they are aware of something

they can comprehend that thing in their mind.

They understand.

They understand.

So the word under is at the start of this particular word,

but there is no oversight and we don't have oversight

And then we have another word understudy.

We will often describe that as an underpass.

So something that is going under

another thing is an underpass

to move under or go beneath.

And then we have overpass.

Well, of course it is the opposite.

So it must mean to go over or above.

So to move over something is an overpass.

Quite often on the roads you will see a road

that will go over another road.

Maybe there is a bridge going over a road,

but on the bridge there is a road

going across the road that is underneath.

And yes, we call that an overpass.

An overpass.

You are going over something.

So there are many uses of the word under and over

when we add them to the beginning, a word

when we use them as a prefix just to show

that something is too much or not enough,

or maybe something is high up.

Low down may be an emotion that is

shown or something that is obvious,

or perhaps something that is hidden from you.

So there are many ways of doing that,

many ways of using anger and over.
