Live English Language Lesson - 11th November 2018 - Autumn - Bird Words + Phrases - Interactive Chat

oh hello there welcome once again I wondered where you were for a moment I

thought you weren't going to make it but here you are and I'm very happy to see

you here once again on another Sunday livestream already we are almost halfway

through November where are the months going I asked myself so here we are live

in direct from England coming up today we have you of course on the livestream

with the things you want to talk about also mr. Steve will be here later on as

well to talk about words and expressions connected to our lovely feathery friends

the birds and I will be here as well there are some slight changes to the

appearance of the livestream today as you will find out very shortly after all

it's a Sunday afternoon it's just after 2 o'clock here in the UK and this is

live English live from Much Wenlock in England on a Sunday afternoon this is

I know I say it every week but these weeks and months are really flying by so

here we go again it is Sunday it's a fun day it's time to learn some English on

the live English stream it sure is hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England

how are you today are you okay I hope so are you happy well are you happy I

really really hope so welcome to a super-duper or terminal day

it looks so wonderful outside let's have a look at the live view first of all oh

my goodness look at that it looks like a painting but it is a live view from the

studio window so as you can see everything is looking rather nice today

a very bright day here in the UK I hope where you are it is lovely as well let's

have another view shall we there it is oh my goodness that looks very very

autumnal very seasonal for this time of year

of course as I always mention every week I absolutely love autumn I really love

it so much I can't I can't express how much I love autumn and let's have a look

at that view oh my god oh my goodness I can't believe it how amazing that looks

I can't believe that that is a live image of the outside of my window but it

is there it is live right now so here we go it is a Sunday afternoon and it's

live English all away with me mr. Duncan you may have noticed some slight changes

I won't mention them I will leave it to you to discover what the changes are

there is some unfinished business from last week by the way there is something

last week that I meant to mention but I didn't mention so

last week's mystery idiom ah do you remember the mystery idiom for last week

well I will show you the mystery idiom from last week so here it is so this is

the mystery idiom but I forgot because I'm very naughty I forgot to give you

the answer to the mystery idiom from last week I had so many people writing

to me saying mr. Duncan you didn't tell us what the mystery idiom answer was so

here it is today the answer to last week's mystery idiom the final straw or

the last straw the meaning a further difficulty or annoyance that comes on

top of a series of previous difficulties that makes a situation unbearable you

cannot take any more this latest difficulty is the final straw so there

it was last week's mystery idiom that I completely forgot to give the answer to

so I hope you are all very very happy about that now because I've given it to

you very busy day very busy week I have been making some some changes in the

studio this week and I had an accident as well I had a terrible fall whilst

making some alterations here in the studio I fell over and I injured one of

my toes I twisted the toe right back and it was very painful and then it went a

very strange purple color so I got a little worried because it was a strange

color and also it was very painful so for a moment or two I thought I had

broken the toe fortunately I hadn't but it's still very painful there is one

thing I can't stand and that is pain I'm sure you are the same as well mr. Steve

was also very busy this morning in fact around about 25 minutes ago

Steve was in the garden very busy can you see what Steve is doing Steve is

clipping his bushes there is nothing worse than an untied untidy Bush no one

wants their Bush to be long and messy so there is Steve there he is look hello

Steve he is trimming the bushes he is cutting the bushes in the garden and I

think he's making a very good job of it as well so just to show you that on

Sunday mornings we are not lazy some people think that we do nothing on a

Sunday except the live stream but mr. Steve is always busy in the garden

especially today because the weather is very nice so mr. Steve took the

opportunity he took the chance to go outside to do a little bit of gardening

and he looks quite pleased with himself there and the things that he has in his

hand are called she is there we go steady mr. Steve he's not very safe is

he with those shears they are very sharp things now I was led to believe that mr.

Steve wasn't supposed to handle anything sharp so I'm not sure about that but

there he is mr. Steve very busy in the garden today trimming his bushes talking

of mr. Steve he will be here later on it around about 2:30 did it get colder in

here or is it just me I think it's you mr. Steve definitely I

think it definitely is mr. Steve I think so he will be here at 2:30 today talking

of things coming up we also have lots of words and expressions connected to birds

and parts of a bird so all of that coming later on with mr. Steve and how

can I forget the live chat yes we have the live chat as well so let's say hello

to the live chat and there it is but the big question is who was first well can I

just say today there is a kind of tie for the first person on the live chat

there is a tie because I think there are two people who were on first so let's go

back to the beginning of the live chat to have a look at who was first well

this morning when I was putting my live stream thumbnail preparing today's live

chat so I suppose technically Belarusian is first but in actual fact after the

Europe there are commemorations taking place in fact they were taking place

this morning and they are related to a event today is Remembrance Sunday also

known as poppy Day and there is a lesson that I've made on my youtube channel so

there is a lesson on my YouTube channel that I made all about this particular

topic all about poppy Day also called Remembrance Day but of course today's

Remembrance is special because it is 100 years since the end of the First World

War so it's actually the end of the First

World War the anniversary of it today I seem to be losing my voice I don't know

where it's going also here in Much Wenlock as well there were

commemorations taking place would you like to have a look ok then so even here

in Much Wenlock this morning there were commemorations taking place for the

hundredth anniversary of the end of World War one also something else

happening today it is also the hundredth anniversary the centenary of the

independence of Poland when Poland became independent once more and there

you can see in the street in the center of much Wenlock you can see one of the

buildings has been decorated with handmade poppies can you see them so

from 1918 to 2018 a hundred years since the end of the Second World War

sorry First World War a hundred years ago I can't quite believe it and for

displayed below the livestream I don't know what's

happening today but I appear I appear to be losing my voice

so I please excuse me if my voice is a little bit croaky today I do apologize

very much for that something else yesterday we were doing oh we went for a

lovely walk yesterday would you like to have a look here we go there so we were

having a lovely walk yesterday and I know that I love mentioning autumn but

I'm going to mention it again the beautiful autumn colors I love the

leaves on the ground I love the colors of the leaves not only when they are on

the trees but also when they have fallen to the ground

I love the appearance aren't they lovely so we went walking yesterday there is

mr. Steve you can see him walking and all the leaves on the ground a beautiful

display of color and I think mr. Steve yesterday was getting very bored because

I kept talking about autumn during the walk and there you can see a nice view

as we walked along oh look at that isn't that nice

the leaves on the ground what about you do you have autumn where you are do you

have the season of autumn I know that some countries don't some countries

don't have autumn they only have hot and dry seasons and then sometimes it is wet

but here in the UK we have very definite seasons we have spring summer autumn and

winter and there is actually an autumn lesson on my YouTube channel so there is

one on my YouTube channel all about the season of autumn and look at that some

beautiful red berries are also growing on one of the bushes in the garden

looking very amazing this year all of the trees and all of the bushes looking

quite colorful and there look at that oh my goodness I really always I always get

so excited about autumn the autumn colours I don't know what it is but it

always sends a little tingle up my spine whenever I look out the window

especially in the morning because sometimes in the morning the weather can

be very very murky very misty very foggy so I hope you enjoyed that a little view

during our walk yesterday so I hope you enjoyed that something a little

different just for a change it is live English and it's myself mr. Duncan the

big question today must be what is mr. Steve wearing now let's have a little

look shall we because last week this is what mr. Steve wore last week and a lot

of people including me think that that particular shirt looks a little bit like

a newsstand so you can see on the left there is a news

and on the right there is mr. Steve with his shirt and I think they look very

similar to each other very similar indeed so if you would like to see my

mr. Steve I have no idea he was outside this morning doing the gardening in fact

he spent the whole morning outside doing the gardening so here we go with today's

mystery idiom would you like to have a look at today's mystery idiom okay then

it is today's mystery idiom but the big question is what is today's mystery

answers so so very yes very quick there you are very quick off the mark so we

have some questions to ask today besides the mystery idiom we also have another

question and this is something I want to ask because I mentioned this to Steve

last week and I thought it would be a very good

thing to talk about today when you feel thirsty what do you tend to drink now

some people like to have a fizzy drink like coca-cola or Pepsi Cola whilst some

like to have something a little stronger maybe beer

or wine but also you can have water as well lovely clear water now some people

prefer to drink their water from a bottle so what I'm wondering today is do

you also like to do the same thing now this is something that I mentioned to

Steve last week and I was saying to Steve do you think it's a waste of time

drinking bottled water because in many countries now the water that comes out

of your tap is quite clean and so you can drink straight from the tap for

example here in the UK you can turn the tap on and you can drink the water

straight from the tap so the water is very clean however these days many

people do drink bottled water so that is one of the questions I'm asking today do

you trust the water that comes from your tap so when you turn on the tap can you

drink the water straight from the tap here in the UK our water is very safe it

is very safe to drink so you can drink it straight from the tap

in fact I have some tap water here so this is not bottled water

this is actually water from the tap and this is bottled water this is something

that I bought in a supermarket so there is the difference but what about the

taste is there really a difference between bottled water and water that you

drink straight from the tap now some people believe that tap water is not

good whilst others disagree so what do you think I'm going to have some lovely

tap water now and hopefully mr. Steve will he'll be here soon as well I don't

know what's happened to mr. Steve mr. Steve will be here in a moment so stand

mr. Steve is in the building and oh I see he's looking a little stylish today

I must admit I do like that that shirt you're wearing it looks very very

it's similar to last week's but it's oh it's black but it hasn't got so many

strange stripes on it yes we were just talking about your shirt because I think

fell over you've got a bad toe I fell over and I thought I had broken my toe

it's got a funny colour it's got a very strange color but fortunately I don't

think I've broken it but it's very painful

quite painful indeed so I'm suffering today I had to give you mouth to toe

resuscitation mr. Steve mr. Steve I don't know why he did it mr. Steve gave

my toe a suck I didn't he was sucking my toe he said it would make it better no I

wasn't there's one thing I can't stand that's feet I've noticed that especially

especially smelly one I never go near people's feet never what about you have

you ever broken anything have you ever broken any part of your body I've never

ever in my life broken any part of my body

that it's lucky so but you're touching my head what are you saying are you

saying that my head is made of wood well that's what people traditionally say is

a joke isn't it touch wood and then they took somebody's head yes indicating that

it's probably made of wood that's very nice but what about hearts have you

broken any heart yes but any body parts have you ever broken your arm or your

leg I really fear that do you know why because I've heard that sometimes if you

break a limb like an arm or something sometimes the bone will break and then

it will come it will actually come out the skin if you have a bad accident I

think it believe it can yes I do not like that

so that's the that's the worst part also of course I would imagine if you break

your arm or your leg I would imagine it's very painful as well yes oh yeah

some people have have very bad injuries and they don't feel that any pain

because your body goes into into shock oh okay and then but the pain comes

later when it when you suddenly realize what's happened in you in the hospital I

think the pain hits quite often a bit later on but yes have you so you've

never broken anything I have never broken any bones in my body now this

week I thought save life mr. Duncan I thought this week

I had broken my toe but fortunately I haven't so Matt my my record of breaking

bones in my body is still clear what about you I've broken my ankle ooh

in a car accident oh yes you've mentioned the years ago you've mentioned

that before I think I have yes well it was fractured oh and as a result of that

I now have a bit of arthritis in the joint its 30-year 30 odd years later and

I find I can't run on it anymore isn't isn't a fracture the same as

breaking something well when you fracture it a break means that the bones

actually separate well they just separate if it's a fracture then it

might it hasn't gone all the way across the bone or it might have done but the

bones don't separate so it might be like a very deep crack yes in the bone so

anyway you let something shall we have a look at the live chat Yohan before we

meniscus and I'm not sure I've torn my meniscus it's so ligament it sounds like

a ligament or a testing is there otama he's testing to see if what we know it

sounds like a ligament or a tendon yes probably it sounds like me

mavey has had her heart broken a lot haven't we all yes that's the worst kind

of breaking of all I mean you're

heartbroken have you really had your heart broken mr. Steny times and I of

course have broken many hearts myself over the years oh yes mr. Duncan well

just look at me you know one look and I just break people's hearts because I

have to say no I'm already spoken for I'm not interested in your advances and

the course they keep on pursuing me but eventually they get broad and they

probably I don't know what happens to them they probably die but you'd

probably end up in a hospital or something with a broken heart rest on

tablets maybe a mental hospital I mean I can't help it it's just the way I am yes

okay that's what yeah that's what your mother says as well so once when I was

10 years old says Alberto I broke both my arms oh my it was painful good I do

not like that it all Alberto boat broke both his arms how how did you how do you

manage to break both arms at Caracara des terres is talking about the body

producing endorphins pain relieving chemicals at the body releases when

you've had a serious injury to sort of stop you feeding pain I don't know where

that's gone but it was there somewhere I could do with some endorphins now really

can I have some endorphin natural painkillers there great we could always

test it out you were talking about tap water I heard you saying yes I mentioned

it earlier because if you remember last week I was talking about our habit so we

have a habit don't we of also buying water in bottles satury know says i

drink tap water it's very good the bottles try to win you over

the tap water that by saying that that the tap water is undrinkable so some

people think you shouldn't drink water from the tap but here in the UK I think

our tap water is quite safe but but you and I have this habit now where we just

buy lots and lots of bottles of water but because tap well tap water is safe

to drink but it doesn't taste very nice because you've always got that

aftertaste of chlorine which we don't like so you've only got two ways around

that okay you either buy bottled water which definitely tastes a lot nicer than

tap water or you buy a filter and like a like a Britax filter Britta I think

they're called or other equivalents and then you filter the water to remove the

chlorine another and other other chemicals that make the water taste

unpalatable but of course you know so you've got two choices there

bottled water of course is supposed to be bad for the environment because

you've got all these bottles plastic bottles have got to be disposed of and

just carrying them I would think just transporting them to the supermarket

must be credibly costly in terms of fuel yes but all of this is about health or

isn't it so so when when you think about your health quite often the environment

becomes becomes less of a priority yes so I think that's the thing to bear in

mind so you've note I've noticed this a lot when humans start talking about

their health sometimes you think well maybe having bottled water is better for

you but of course bottled water comes in plastic bottles which as we all know now

isn't good for the environment someone's already pointed out as well that the

study is discovered that bottled water does contain small particles of plastic

yes so you're consuming you're getting rid

of the chlorine and other things but then you're substituting that with

plastic from the bottle what I think also is that gonna be good for you well

I think is maybe if you get the cheaper water or maybe if it's been bottled very

cheaply so maybe the plastic isn't as good as far as the quality yes but but

to be honest I don't say I've got some tap water here today so I'm being very

brave this is actually some British tap water straight from the sea we use do we

used to filter the water with one of these Brita filters straight from the

tap and I think I'm gonna go back to that but then you don't know what's what

the filter is putting into the water either so probably tap water is probably

the safest yes anyway I don't like it in the you I don't wanna get too confused

so we're just talking about tap water or bottled water so that's at those two

things rain water I remember like rain water

and drink that has probably very good for you

I would imagine so but again that's not in a bottle itself but I remember in

China when I lived in China they always suggested that you didn't drink the tap

water so they had tap water but apparently wasn't completely pure so I

think when the the water was being filtered I think it wasn't 100% clean so

I always boiled the water well for us going abroad because we've got very

clean water yes Pedro you can ask me a question you

can of course you can you can always ask anything this is what this is all about

so I'll ask away but yes what they would say whenever we use to go abroad on

holiday virtually virtually every country you're always advised never to

drink the tap water in other countries because it's probably eat either it's

not as pure as you as bought in the UK or it might be but there might be

different contaminants in there that your body's not used to but generally

when we go abroad we're always advised not to drink out of the tap particularly

if it's somebody like Greece or Spain but certainly if we go to the I think I

don't know if France is alright but anywhere on you in Europe you go on

holiday where we're never advised to drink the water I'm looking now Albertus

says drinking water from the tap is not recommended here in gran canaria right

at least not in the main city probably in the countryside it's no problem so

well do you drink Alberto if you don't drink the tap water what do you drink do

you I won't presumably you could boil the

water and I mean in America there's been all sorts of scandals with water being

contaminated with with aluminium and things like

because they they dump too much there was one firm there was a scandal in

America where this whole town hundreds of thousands of people have been

poisoned by contaminants going into the tap water as I understand that still an

ongoing situation I know I know where you're talking about it's a place called

Flint they say Flint in Michigan in the United States and their water is all

contaminated as I understand it it's also the impurities are things like also

rust chemicals things that have seeped yes seeped I love that word if something

seeps it means it moves slowly through something so so all of the chemicals all

of the bad stuff will seep it's a great word that Alberta buys what bottled

water from the supermarket so yes you could boil it but of course that's going

to be a bit time-consuming you've got to wait for it to cool down but it might

not be that it's got back to you bacteria in the water it might not it

might be that there's other chemical pollutants in there that heavy metals or

like lead or I mean you've got to be careful with tap water anyway because if

your pipes are made of lead which they don't tend to be here in the UK anymore

but if you live in an old property you might have a lead pipe and the lead

soldiering in the copper pipes you you've got to first thing in the morning

you've got to flush the tap out for a period of time to get rid of all the

otherwise you'll be drinking water that's got metal in it from the pipes I

think we're gonna go back I've decided we're going to go back to filtering the

water with a Brita filter yes there are of course there are other filters

available on the market well i'm britta paying is well no no one pays us we

don't we don't get any sponsorship from anyone I know we should do I don't know

why we don't we can we can promote products there are many of there

there are many reasons why one we're not sexy that's I think that's the main

reason if we if we were very sexy so maybe if we were we were very sexy

ladies there may be lots of companies would want us just to be sponsored so

they would want their products to appear but we're not very sexy mr. Steve even

though I'll speak for yourself even though Steve thinks he's like some some

party animal he isn't Pedro has asked a question

well Pedro said maybe we didn't have enough time which would have been

slightly better answer than laziness well I thought today I say to mr. Duncan

haven't got time today you're out in the garden today we did run out yeah but if

you said we were going to do that I would have prepared something you would

and filming something he's always got his camera so you've got to be you've

always got to think our perhaps what I'm doing now is it being filmed yes I I

like to sneak up behind mr. Steve there we go I thought I thought I'd do that so

you have to be honest Sunday I don't get much time to do any gardening because

I've got to prepare the woods yeah and then in the winter of course it's dark

by the time we finished so I know that's one thing that I'm still getting used to

it gets dark so early now oh my goodness at four o'clock it's already dark I

don't like it oh I wonder what you're going to do then Steve were you going to

do something we're going to chop your head off then with the shears see look

at that that's a professional at work steady

you're a bit mad there you're okay I don't want to get rid of that Ivy

that's ivy that plant I'm gonna get rid of it it's just creeping into everywhere

destroying the brickwork you don't like ivy do you know you find it very

annoying very annoying very annoying everybody creeps around and it just gets

guarding you against taking risky behavior it's saying that what you

already have is more valuable than the possibility of having something better

the pursuit of that something else which you think is better you lose what you

already have so it's guarding you against taking too

many risks really which in this day and age people like to take more risks if

you're if you like the stock market for example that's a very risky place so it

wouldn't be an expression you would use there so here's an example be content

with what you have rather than risk losing it is to get is to rather than

get something better so in gambling for example if you were to win a bet in

gambling and there was a you know very high chance of you losing but you've won

money to place another bet in the hope of getting a greater winning a common

somewhere early or before everybody else then you're going to get more reward so

this is where you're going to get the best deal or the best pickings so this

expression is used really when there's there is competition for something so

for example if there's a sale at your local department store okay and there's

all these lovely things for sale but you don't and the store opens at nine

o'clock but you don't turn up to 11 mm-hmm then you might miss the chance

good to be lots of other people after these bargains so someone could say to

you well if you want to get that TV that's on discount get there early the

early bird catches the worm and if you get there late someone else would have

got it there before you so always be the first always be the first person it's

interesting news or gossip and and then you want to tell somebody about it and

it's usually about the person you're going to talk to speak to and instead of

gone home so the the pecking order the order of importance of influence of

power yes but quite often as well it doesn't

have to be literally the managing director down to the office managers

down to the cleaner it can be you've got a group of people in an office all doing

the same job hmm they might all be on the 10th on the phones or they might all

have their own little cubicles all doing the same job but some of them have been

there a bit longer than others some of them seem to have the the boss's ear and

there might be a pecking order within a group of people who were all doing the

same job right endure so for example if you're if you're in sales there might

could be 30 people in your company who are doing the same job in sales but the

pecking order some of them have ranked higher than others because they've

perhaps been long time they've had more success and

they're seen as in status as being above others so it doesn't have to be just

literally the order in terms of what your job is it could be the order within

a group of people all doing the same job here's another one if something is

annoying if something gets on your nerves if something you create and and

you want it to go away or something that you find infuriating you can say that it

sticks in your craw craw okay and akrur is like the thing that a bird grabs with

the craw so it really sticks in my craw it's

it means you give them a kiss always shot a short little kiss give somebody a

to insult an old person you can also say an old coot or old bird
