One of the problems

with not wearing my glasses for reading,

And to be honest,

I can't see very well.

But if I wear my reading glasses,

then everything that is close to me looks lovely and clear,

or else

I might start having problems.

Especially when I read the live chat,

because at the moment I can't see it clearly.

Eyes are really weird things, aren't they?

When you think about it, they're very strange.

They're inside the front of your head

and quite often you don't think about them.

You just take it for granted that you can see

But it is only when things go wrong with your eyes

that you start to realise how important they are.

And one of the things I really find annoying

is when I am wearing the wrong glasses.

That was very weird, if I was honest with you.

But the letters started to become dense.

It is often, often hard to see them.

If you are reading very small print,

for example, in a newspaper,

if you are reading newspaper

print, it's so small

I have difficulty reading

very small print,

especially in the newspaper or a magazine.

I often find it very difficult to

see the words on the paper,

to be honest, which is rather embarrassing.

Today we are looking at words and phrases connected

to being in the house

on a rainy day, things to do on a rainy day.

There are many things that can keep you

occupied or busy,

but I think the most disappointing thing about the rain

is when you have plans, as if you have planned

to do something on a day

when all of a sudden

it starts to rain.

I wanted to go outside

and have a walk and do some filming today,

but unfortunately I can't because it is well, it is

raining.

Even in the studio we have rain,

which is rather annoying to say the least.

There were some photographs taken

after that incredible

drama on board

the passenger plane yesterday.

Did you see it?

Now, I don't know about you, but I do sometimes

watch TV programmes

about aircraft disasters.

I don't know why, but sometimes I find it

interesting, especially when something happens

and I don't know how it happened or why it happened.

And then they investigate the reason why

the accident occurred.

But I have to say, I was a little bit.

Shocked.

Concerned. Worried.

Maybe because I will be taking a flight

in Iran about three weeks from now.

So I feel as if I have to ask this question.

And the question is, are you afraid of flying now,

I have to say, the first time I ever flew on a plane,

I was afraid and I think it is a natural feeling.

However, when you start hearing of things happening

on aeroplanes,

when things go wrong or when they go seriously wrong,

like the one

that had the problem yesterday, in fact,

it had to make an emergency landing.

I think it was. Where was it?

Was it Thailand?

It made an emergency landing.

It was travelling from London and it had to make

an emergency landing because it suddenly dropped

whilst flying at high altitude.

It dropped 7000ft

in just 30s or was it 30s or three minutes?

I think it was actually three minutes.

But of course, if you are on a plane,

you will often find that quite often

the plane will go up and down

suddenly turbulence.

They call it turbulence.

So when the plane hits

small pockets of air,

the plane will move up and down.

And I have to say,

when I saw the pictures

yesterday of the aftermath

of that rather dramatic

moment on board that

Singapore Airlines plane,

I have to admit I was a little bit afraid.

I was thinking to myself, in just three weeks from now,

I will be flying

to Italy.

It's not very far away.

So I think from here now we are flying from Manchester

Airport and I think it takes around

2.5 hours,

2.5 hours to get from Manchester

to Italy.

We will be landing in Rome.

In fact, I and I wasn't too worried about it.

But unfortunately after yesterday,

after looking at all of those dramatic pictures

on board that plane, I have to say I was a little worried

and I don't know why, but it is strange.

We do like sometimes watching things,

especially when things go wrong

and I don't know why, but but I find it fascinating.

I think the most reassuring part of watching

those types of

TV shows where disasters happen.

I think sometimes it is reassuring because you know

that they have solved that problem.

They have put that problem right,

so it won't happen again.

Maybe that's one of the reasons why I enjoy watching them,

but I have to say, I remember I still remember

clearly the first time I ever flew, and that was with Mr.

Steve, and we went to Greece

and I was really afraid.

But I was also excited as well.

Sometimes it is possible to fear something,

but also to feel excited about it.

So I suppose I had the feeling of both excitement

and fear at the same time.

But what about you?

Are you afraid of flying

whenever you hear of problems

occurring on board an aircraft,

I often feel as

if as if I don't want to get on a plane.

I don't know why.

The best thing to do on a rainy day is

have a good lunch and a long nap.

I have to say, Joseph, you are correct.

I think that's a great suggestion,

but it is disappointing when you make plans for your day

and then the rain comes along and spoils it.

I like to lie in bed and listen to the rain coming down.

Yes, there is something quite relaxing and peaceful

about the rain falling,

especially when it is falling against the glass.

travelling by plane is the safest way to travel.

I think you're more

likely to have an accident in a car

than in an aircraft,

which I find rather

It was such an amazing flight.

The the times that I always feel

afraid is when the plane is taking off

and as it is landing.

But once I'm up in the in the sky,

once the plane is flying and everything is nice,

I feel okay.

Think of opening an English language

centre to the place where you travel.

It's a very good idea.

When I was living in China, I used to work

at a small English centre.

A small place where people would go to

to learn English of all ages.

So we had kids going there, we had adults going there

and that was one of my jobs.

I had lots of jobs.

I was working in the main school,

but also in the training centre as well.

The English Centre.

And I have to say it was a very interesting experience.

I will be honest with you.

I think it's easier.

I don't know if there are any teachers

watching at the moment, but from my own experience of teaching,

especially when I was in China,

teaching younger people is much easier

because I find that the information will go into their brains

much, much easier.

It is a fast process

teaching young people.

What I often find

when I'm teaching adults is they will often

have lots of follow up questions.

Whereas if you if you teach children,

they don't they don't normally have

lots of follow up questions.

So that I suppose that is one of the big differences

between those things.

Things to do on a rainy day.

I remember as a kid.

I always remember as a child hating

rainy days, stuck in the house.

You wanted to go outside and play with your friends,

but you couldn't because it was raining.

And there is nothing worse than a rainy day.

Especially when you want to do something outside.

But you can't.

So that is what we are looking at right now.

Things to do on a rainy day.

And I would imagine that you have your own suggestions

as well of things that you can do when the rain is falling.

Well, I suppose I suppose

that there are some obvious ones,

very obvious things, Mr.

Duncan.

It's very easy to

work out what to do on a rainy day.

Well, we will talk about them anyway.

I suppose the things you can do on a rainy day.

Well, most of them are very similar,

especially on on this list

that I have next to me right now.

Stay indoors.

That's what I'm doing now.

I'm staying indoors because it's raining, unfortunately,

and I can't go outside because it's horrible.

Stay at home.

Yes, that's what I am doing.

I am staying at home.

I'm not going anywhere.

I don't go out.

That is very good advice.

Don't go out, stay indoors,

stay at home,

don't go out.

Spend it relaxing.

Just like earlier.

One of the suggestions was spending time in bed

or just staying in bed and doing nothing.

I have to say, I think that is a very good suggestion indeed.

Or of course you can just sit

and watch the rain.

You can sit and watch the rain falling

like like I am right now.

Oh yes, there it is.

As if by magic.

The rain is now falling.

Things to do on the rainy day.

You can sit and look out the window.

And be thankful

that you are not outside in the rain.

What do you do when it rains?

I wonder what you do.

Does it rain very often in your country?

Because I know in some countries

it doesn't rain very often.

However, here in the UK,

especially here in England, we do have a lot of rain.

I have to say it does rain quite often.

A lot of people always imagine.

They imagine that a typical day

in England is a rainy day.

And yes, you are right, it can quite often

be very wet and rainy.

A bit like today, really.

So what do you do when it rains?

Well, here are some suggestions if you're not sure what to do,

here are some suggestions of things you can do on a rainy day.

Maybe you can do some of those chores

you have been putting off for ages.

Maybe something you have to do around the house,

maybe a certain job that you should be doing

or you should have done already, but you've been putting it off.

You keep saying, no, I will do it another time.

I will do it later.

I will do it on another day.

But then, of course, suddenly you find yourself in the house.

You are stuck in the house.

So why not do some of those chores,

some of those little household jobs that you've been putting off

for ages?

For example, last week

we took down the Christmas tree.

Last week.

Yes, you heard me right.

Last week we decided to take the Christmas tree down.

It has been up in the living room

since before Christmas last year,

and we took it down last week.

The only problem is we haven't actually put it away.

So it is now lying down in the conservatory

at the back of the house.

So that is one job I suppose I could do today.

I could take the Christmas tree and put it up in the loft.

So perhaps you could do some chores, maybe a job

that you've been putting off for a long, long

time.

Claudia says, I will do some sewing,

or I will gather my clothes that

I need to fix or repair.

A rainy day is a good opportunity to do that task.

Yes, you are right, I think so.

Things that you probably should have done

many, many weeks ago you can do on a rainy day.

If a group of you are stuck indoors,

then you could play a game.

You could do an activity, you could carry out something

or do something, or take part in

something with other people

physically there,

right in the place where you are.

If you are with other people,

you could do something you could play a game,

you could have a go at playing

a certain type of game.

Maybe you could watch TV.

now there is something that I love to do,

even if it's not raining, even if the sun is out.

Sometimes staying in the house watching TV.

So maybe you could watch TV, maybe a movie,

maybe something funny to cheer you up.

Because one of the problems with a rainy day is quite often

you feel a little bit miserable.

I would say that quite often

people will will see rain

and they will feel a little unhappy or gloomy.

Maybe you could play a video game.

So I suppose you don't have to be with other people.

You could play a video game

online with lots of people

who are also stuck in the house.

And I suppose also you could

learn some English or in my case

teach some English, which is what

what I'm doing right now.

My stupid throat.

I hate my throat so much because of hay

fever.

This is one of the problems

when you use your voice a lot.

When things go wrong,

you really do not enjoy it.

It is very annoying.

If you are with a group of people, perhaps you could play

a board game.

I remember as a child our family would often play

games, maybe a certain type of game.

We would sit and play a certain type of board game.

For example.

Have you ever played this game?

It's a very interesting game.

I used to play this a lot as a kid.

Snakes and ladders

a very simple game.

You just move around a board

and each time you go on a ladder, you go up.

Each time you land on a snake,

you go down.

So the idea is to get around the board and get to the end,

the final square.

But each time you land on something,

you will either go up or you will slide back down.

So the ladder will take you up

and the snake will make you slide

back down.

I suppose it's worth

mentioning that the game is also known

as Chutes and Ladders,

so quite often in the United States you will often see

Chutes and Ladders.

It is a very similar game, but

the name is

different and there are no snakes,

unlike the one we play here,

which has snakes.

Then I suppose

you could play another type of board game.

This is a very popular board game

called monopoly.

I remember as a kid

our family would sit around

and we would play monopoly and

it would often end with someone

complaining or someone getting angry,

or someone

being annoyed by the game.

So I don't remember ever finishing

a game of monopoly.

I don't remember ever, ever finishing a game of not really,

because before we finished the game we would always end up arguing.

Everyone would start fighting over the game.

But it is a very good game.

I suppose

you could also occupy yourself

do something by yourself.

So when we say that you occupy yourself,

we are saying that you are doing something on your own.

You occupy yourself.

You are doing something to pass away the time.

You might put together

a jigsaw puzzle like this.

So you are doing something that will keep you busy.

It will occupy your mind

so you don't feel bored.

And of course, as we all know,

when you are busy,

time goes by much faster,

which can be a good thing

or a bad thing when you think about it.

Maybe you are a person who enjoys

word puzzles, solving

puzzles,

crossword puzzles like this one.

Now I am not very good

at doing crossword puzzles.

Quite often the clues are so difficult

they are hard to solve.

But there are some people who are very good

at solving crossword puzzles.

So here is another thing that you can do on a rainy day.

You could.

Solve a crossword puzzle.

Okay, I will get rid of the rain.

Now go away.

Rain. That's it.

It's gone now.

That rain was starting to annoy me.

Even the virtual rain on

the screen was starting to annoy me.

So it's gone now.

Crossword puzzles.

A lot of newspapers will have a crossword puzzle.

But I have to be honest with you, I often find them

very difficult to solve.

Quite often the clues will be quite difficult to to solve.

We call them cryptic clues,

something that is cryptic

as an, as a has as a hidden meaning.

Some sort of meaning is hidden away

within that sentence.

So quite often with crosswords

you will find that there are clues

that give you the word

that you are trying to find.

But I have to say, I'm

not very good at crosswords.

Maybe you can just go outside

and enjoy the rain.

As a child, maybe

I would go outside and play in the rain,

splash in the puddle,

and sometimes as an adult, I will also do it.

Sometimes as an adult,

I will also go out and splash

in the puzzles, especially when I'm trying

to clean my boots after a long walk.

You battle through a difficult situation.

Maybe something that comes along that causes

problems, causes difficulty.

We can say that to weather

the storm, to weather the storm is to push through,

to battle through a difficult situation.

So you can use this

particular phrase, figurative bully.

You can use it as a figure of speech

to weather the storm.

Some sort of difficulty,

some sort of problem that is coming your way.

You will have to battle through

that difficult situation.

You must weather the storm.

Here's another interesting

phrase we can use connected to weather.

Save something for a rainy day.

Quite often we will use this phrase when we are talking about money,

something that you put aside

to put something back

for when it is really needed.

So maybe you will take some money

and you will put that money

in a certain place.

Maybe you will put it in a bank account.

Maybe you will put it away somewhere where no one can find it.

But you know where it is.

And when you need that money, you can use it.

So maybe you put something away

or you put something in a certain place.

You save something for a rainy day

just in case you need it at some point.

And we often use that

particular phrase when we are talking about money.

You save it for a rainy day.

Here's another one.

Come rain or shine,

a very positive phrase.

No matter what the situation is, whatever happens,

whatever difficulties will come our way,

we will still do it.

We will make our way through that problem.

So whatever happens,

you will still do it.

It will still happen.

So the phrase is referring to the rain.

So perhaps in your day

you have lots of new problems that you have to sort out.

Maybe in your job you suddenly have lots of

difficulties, lots of problems that you have to face or solve.

and it is a problem.

You have to solve it.

to make your daily difficult.

we say that it is raining

cats and dogs.

It's an interesting expression,

You might say that it is coming down heavily.

You might have heavy rain.

So heavy rain means the rain is coming down

in large amounts.

And then I have to say.

and sadly the rain stopped me from going outside,

which is not very nice.

There are many other things that you have to face
