Learn English with Nature - Searching for the Elusive Bluebells

I hope you have a smile on your face today

because I'm going to show you something rather lovely.

Summer has arrived here in England, and today

we are going to take a look

at one of the most beautiful flowers

that comes out at this time of year,

although it only comes into bloom for a very short time.

We are talking all about the elusive Bluebell.

All I can say is I'm glad I've been doing

my regular exercise is keeping myself fit and healthy.

Recently because now I have to climb 99 steps

so then we can all enjoy the beautiful colour

of the elusive bluebells together.

The common bluebell,

also known as the wild Hyacinth or wood Hyacinth,

is a plant belonging to the group of flower

bearing plants whose most notable characteristics are

its bell shaped clusters, known as tepels,

and of course, the distinctive blue colour

that gives this plant its name.

Bluebells are described as delicious in appearance

and are often found in shaded woodland areas.

The flowers are produced

before the forest canopy closes over

ahead of the arrival of summer.

There are two main varieties of bluebell,

one with a pale flower,

while the other exhibits a much darker bloom.

They are classified as bulbous growing,

which means that the young plant emerges from a bulb-like root

that functions as a food storage organ during dormancy.

The bluebell is a perennial plant,

which means it comes into flower every year

as opposed to one that only flowers once or twice.

The narrow window for flowering makes the bluebell

a much sought after species of plant.

For those who enjoy observing nature during late spring,

Sometimes it is necessary to travel many miles

or hike for long distances

before the distinctive flower is found.

These days, many people have started

planting bluebells in their own gardens

so as to ensure a burst of late spring colour.

It is interesting to note that bluebells are protected

under law here in the UK with heavy penalties

being issued to those damaging or removing the plant.

Fines of up to £5,000 can be issued to those

breaking that particular law.

Besides bluebells, you will also notice

lots of wild garlic growing,

especially at this time of year.

you will see lots of this particular plant

growing all over the place, filling the air

with its delicious garlic scent.

Did you know?

You can also use wild garlic in cooking.

You can use it in recipes for soup.

And also you can Sprinkle it on salad.

Well, I set out to film

some bluebells and I achieved my goal.
