I have to be honest with you.

You may have noticed at the start of today's live stream there were some lovely,

some lovely scenery to look at with the cherry blossom.

I have to say it did look rather nice and in the back garden

I've also noticed that there are some daffodils.

They haven't come out so you can't see the yellow petals yet.

However, they are preparing to open up

and show off their beautiful yellow colours

so the daffodils are waiting

for the warm weather to arrive.

Talking of the weather, it's a strange day today.

It is my old, but we've had a lot of rain again

and we are going to get lots of rain over the next 48 hours.

Apparently there is a huge

weather storm and it stretches.

I'm not joking.

It stretches all the way from Cuba,

all the way to my house.

I wish I was joking.

I was told last night by a nice man

on the television that this huge weather system

is stretching all the way from Cuba,

all the way to my house.

And that is why we are having so much strange weather at the moment.

I can't remember the last time we had such a wet winter.

It's been crazy.

We've got water coming up

from under the ground

in our garden so the water isn't just falling.

It is also coming up from beneath the ground

because there is so much water.

or they have burnt their skin frazzle.

It's a great word.

It can be a noun or a verb.

English idioms are a very interesting way

of expressing things in the language.

So quite often when we use idioms, we are using

phrases, we are using certain words together

with other words to present a different meaning.

We often call this figurative.

So when we talk about something that is figurative,

it is a type of figure of speech.

We are making a word or phrase means something else.

It is a very good way of describing a certain type of thing.

So that will be coming up very, very soon.

Something I haven't seen people do for a long time.

Have you noticed sometimes you notice

things, you notice things that are happening.

But but also you hope you notice things that are not happening

or things that people don't do anymore.

So I remember as a kid when I was a child, way, way back

a long time ago,

I used to enjoy chewing gum.

Chewing gum, Chewing gum.

You can chew gum.

And of course, the noun for that particular thing is chewing gum.

You put it in your mouth and you chew.

And it's a very good way of relaxing.

It's something to do with your mouth.

It keeps you happy.

Quite often, chewing gum will taste of peppermint,

but the only problem with chewing gum is quite often it will lose its flavour.

So the longer you chew the gum,

the less time it will keep its flavour, unfortunately.

But you never see people chewing gum anymore.

So I think maybe the fashion

of chewing gum has actually vanished.

Now, I know in some countries it is illegal to have chewing gum.

I believe Singapore.

In Singapore it is absolutely legal.

You can not have chewing gum.

And the reason is we all know why chewing gum is such a

horrible thing is because a lot of people will remove it.

They will take it out of their mouth and throw it away, or

maybe they will stick it somewhere.

Maybe they will drop it on the floor.

And then as you're walking along, you will get chewing gum on the bottom of your shoe.

There is nothing worse than chewing gum,

especially if you get it in your hair.

Have you ever had chewing gum in your hair?

I know at school people used to do this.

You see, They used to do it as a joke.

They used to get some chewing gum and they would put it into someone else's hair.

And of course, the more you try to remove

the chewing gum from your hair,

the harder it becomes to actually get it out.

It becomes more tangled in the hair.

So I think chewing gum is something that not many people do

or they don't enjoy it anymore.

But I do remember as a kid quite often at school

we would always put our chewing gum in strange places

for people to find later.

And of course, a lot of people feel that

chewing gum is a little unhygienic,

especially when you take it out and put it somewhere else.

And that is the reason why maybe in some countries

chewing gum is banned,

you can't even take it into the country.

I think also for people who are trying to give up smoking.

So quite often people who are trying to quit smoking

very often will chew gum instead.

some lovely English idioms.

We are looking at idioms today, some lovely English idioms.

Now, last weekend I did show some idioms

on the live stream and a lot of people said, Mr.

Duncan, we love the idioms we do.

Well, because I'm so lovely and generous.

Here we go.

Some more English idioms

and we get straight into all of today's idioms with the first one.

Here is a great idiom for those who want to take it easy.

Maybe during the day you've had a very stressful time.

Maybe you want to enjoy yourself.

Maybe you want to do something to relax yourself.

Perhaps you want to have a little snack whilst resting.

To take it easy.

We can say that you put your feet up

to put your feet up.

It is a great idiom in English

to relax and take it easy for a while.

The action of resting

to relax and take it easy for a while.

The action of resting, for example, in a sentence

this afternoon I am going to put my feet up

in front of the TV.

So this means that you are going to relax this afternoon.

You are going to take it very, very easy.

You are going to sit in front of the television

and you are going to put your feet up.

Some people like to have a short break

from something, maybe at home.

So I think it's fair to say most people will put their feet up

when they are at home after you come back from work,

maybe you work at home and you are having a break.

Perhaps you will put your feet up for a short time.

So when we use the idiom, put your feet up.

It means to have a rest.

To take it easy.

To have a relaxing time.

You put your feet up.

Here is another one.

now, here's an interesting one.

It might look like an aggressive

or maybe something that might be violent.

Perhaps, but it isn't.

To stick to your guns.

A person who will stick to their guns

quite often in a situation where you have to carry on doing something, even though other people

are telling you to do something else, maybe situations

and circumstances will come along to try and change

the way you do things, but you will not change.

You decide to stick

to your guns.

You decide not to change your ways,

to stay true to your intentions

and not give up or change your plans.

You will not do any of those things.

You will carry on doing that things the way you've decided.

You stick to your guns.

You don't stop.

You are there.

You are willing to defend the thing that you are doing.

I will stick to my guns and go ahead with the deal.

So even though people are trying to tell me not to do it, I will still go ahead.

I will stick to my guns.

I will not change my mind.

It is a very interesting phrase that we often use in English

to stick to your guns.

Another interesting English idiom.

And that's what we're doing today.

We are looking at some English idioms.

So if a person tries to persuade you

to do something differently,

maybe something you want to do your own way,

or maybe, maybe an argument you are having with someone,

perhaps you are arguing with a friend,

but you decide not to change your view or your opinion.

You stick to your guns.

It is an interesting expression that we often use in English.

I mentioned the rain earlier and here is one

just for that particular type of weather.

Take a rain check.

So if you take a rain check,

it means you are taking an offer

of a future event

quite often because the arrangement you were made

originally has been cancelled.

So I think this originates in the US, say from football games.

So whenever a football game was arranged, perhaps the rain would fall

and of course the football match could not take place or the football game.

So that is not soccer.

It is actual football, American football.

And quite often they would say, you can take a rain check,

which means you can come back and watch the game when the weather is better

so you won't have to pay to see the match again, because you've already done that.

You've already paid for it.

So they have a rain check, which means you can

do something at a later date.

Here we go

to agree to do something at another time and place in the future.

So a thing you wish you were going to do,

an appointment you were going to keep had to be cancelled.

You could not do it.

So you agree to do it later.

At another date, you take a rain check.

We will have to take a rain check on that dinner date.

So perhaps we had arranged to meet up for lunch or maybe an evening meal

and we had to cancel

for some reason.

There might be a good reason.

That might not be a good reason.

So if you do have to cancel something quite often, you will give a rain check.

We use it figuratively to say that we will do this.

Not today because we had to cancel it.

We will do it later.

At another time, on another day, we will

take a rain check on that.

It is a very interesting idiom and it is quite often used

in English.

Here's another one.

This animal does not look very happy.

And I think there is a very good reason for it.

Not looking very happy.

Take the bull by the horns.

If you take the bull by the horns,

it means you are facing something

or you are about to do something that you have been putting off,

or maybe something you have been delaying,

or maybe a thing that you have to do.

And to be honest, you don't want to do it.

You have been putting it off.

Sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns

to face a difficult task directly,

do something difficult that may present a challenge.

So maybe something you want to do, but

you have been delaying, you have been waiting.

You you don't want to actually do it.

So now you have decided that you are going to take

the bull by the horns.

You are going to face that particular difficulty.

I will take the bull by the horns and ask her to the party.

so maybe there is a

person that you want to ask on a date.

Maybe you want to take them out.

Maybe you want.

You want to get to know them better.

But of course, you might also be nervous.

You might be afraid of being rejected.

So instead, you delay.

You don't do it.

But then one day you decide.

I'm going to take the bull by the horns.

I'm going to ask her to the party.

I'm going to take the bull by the horns.

Something you have been putting off, something

you have not wanted to do,

but you suddenly decide that you are going to do it.

You take the bull by the horns.

Here's another one to be a stick in the mud.

To be a stick in the mud.

It is a very interesting phrase.

It is one that we use quite often when we are describing a person

who is not very interesting, or maybe they are a person who doesn't want to get involved

with fun events, things that are fun and exciting.

So we might describe a person as a stick in the mud,

a dull and boring person who seems

to never want to do anything exciting.

Can be described as a stick in the mud.

They are a person who might be seen as dull and boring

or maybe they are not very adventurous.

They are a stick in the mud.

It is a very interesting phrase indeed.

So a person, maybe you want to invite them out to a party

or maybe to a place where you can have lots of fun, but they don't want to do it.

They say, No, I don't want to do it.

Why do you have to spoil the party

by being such a stick in the mud? Why?

So maybe something you want them to be involved with.

Maybe a visit to an exciting place.

Or maybe a party.

But that person does not want to get involved.

You might describe them as a stick in the mud.

They are a person who does not want to get involved with anything exciting.

Here's another one.

Maybe you cut corners.

Maybe you cut corners.

A person who might cut corners

is a person who might decide to do something

quickly or easily without following all of the rules.

So quite often we use this phrase when we are talking about

a thing that has to be done in a certain way.

Maybe you have to follow out lots of rules

or procedures.

Procedure is a thing that is done or carried out.

So a person who likes to cut corners

quite often

likes to take the easy way through a difficult

task to cut out important parts of a process.

You are not doing them because it takes too much time.

So quite often there might be situations where you will cut corners.

You will do things quicker

by removing certain parts of it.

If we cut corners on this project, there might be a serious accident.

And as we know from history, a lot of serious accidents,

a lot of things have happened in the past

because people have cut corners.

They've decided to do things in a different way by taking away

some of the procedures things or some of the things you have to do.

Perhaps if you are constructing a building,

maybe you you leave out

certain parts of the construction.

However, those things are very important

because they will make the building strong and safe.

So sometimes people will cut corners

to make a task easier

or to make it easier to do or simpler to carry out.

You are cutting corners.

You cut corners.

Here's another one.

Maybe there is a person in authority.

Maybe you are working in a shop and your manager

decides to go out for a break.

Maybe they want to go outside to have a cigarette

because that's what you have to do in this country.

If you want to have a cigarette in this country, you have to go outside.

If you work in an office or a shop, you cannot smoke inside or in a public place.

You have to go out.

So maybe they are going outside for a few moments and then they say, Mr.

Duncan, can you hold the fort?

To hold the fort means that you are taking responsibility

for something for a short time.

Normally a business

to take charge of something for a temporary period of time

to stand in for a person with authority for a short time.

So you will hold the fort.

It is a great idiom that we use

quite often in business or maybe in a place of work.

Maybe you are running a shop

and you have to go out for a short time

so another person will step in.

They will take responsibility.

They will hold the fort.

The manager will go for lunch

and I will hold the fort until he returns.

So he will be gone for a short time.

But when he comes back, he will take over again.

I will hold the fort until they return.

Here's another one.

Quite often in life, we we do things.

Sometimes those things are to difficult to carry out.

Maybe they are too hard to do.

Quite often we find ourselves

in a situation where we can't on.

Maybe you decide to throw in the towel.

If you throw in the towel, it means you give up.

You quit. You stop.

You decide that you don't want to do that thing anymore because it is too difficult.

You decide to throw in the towel

to quit after having had enough of something.

You quit or stop doing something.

This job is too difficult for me.

I have decided to throw in the towel.

If you decide to quit

or stop something, something you don't want to do anymore,

you throw in the towel.

You stop doing it.

This expression comes from the sport of boxing,

where if one person decides

that they don't want to continue fighting the

to show that that particular person wants to give up.

They throw in the towel.

So that is where that particular expression comes from.

We are describing something that is normally wet

or normally contains a lot of moisture, but now it doesn't.

It is bone dry.

You might describe an area

where very little rain has fallen.

Maybe a desert, maybe a place where the sun

has been out for many days.

Every day has been hot and now the ground is dry.

We can say that it is bone dry.

It is a great expression that we use

to describe something that has dried out,

a thing that is completely dried out,

a tinder dry object.

So if we describe something as tinder

dry, it means it is very dry.

In fact, it might catch fire.

Something that is so dry

it could easily catch fire.

All the moisture has gone.

It has been

so locked

away by the heat it has evaporated.

Something can be described as bone dry.

Here's another one.

Maybe in business

something might be rotten to the core.

So maybe if you take a piece of fruit such as an apple

and you bite into it inside,

the apple might be completely rotten,

which means you can't eat it.

Some things it is rotten to the core

is completely rotten all the way through.

Right to the centre.

So in English, as an idiom,

we can describe something that is bad.

Maybe the people doing it or running it are not very good people.

Or maybe they are criminals.

Maybe they are people who like to take bribes.

Quite often in in companies you will find that sometimes

the business or the

the company is rotten to the core,

a person group or an organisation that is corrupt

or is run by corrupt people,

corrupt managers.

Maybe the people at the top

are bad people.

They are people who do things in the wrong way.

They have bad practices.

They do things in the wrong way.

This company has been mismanaged for a long time.

It is a rotten to the core.

It means everyone involved all the way to the top.

They are all bad people.

This company has been mismanaged.

It is rotten to the core.

It is a great English phrase that we use

to describe something that has a lot of organisation.

But the people behind the organising ization are doing things

illegal or illegally.

They are doing things in an unlawful way.

Here's another one.

This is something that happened to me, by the way.

I know I've told you this before, but I have had

this happen to me in the past when I was much younger.

To get the sack, you get the sack.

It is an idiom we use once again

in business or in employment.

So if you are employed by someone, maybe you have a job and you don't do it very well.

Or maybe you you do something that you should not whilst working for them,

they will give you the sack, they will terminate your employment.

They cut your employment.

You will not have a job with that company anymore.

They give you the sack

to be dismissed from your job, to lose your job negatively.

Is there a positive way of losing your job?

I don't think there is.

But what I mean by that is quite often you lose your job

not because you have decided to.

So a lot of people do.

They will decide one day that they want to change their job.

They want to do something else.

And they will go and work somewhere else.

But to be dismissed from your job

means that you did not want to lose your job.

You didn't want to lose your job at all

because you did something wrong.

You did something bad.

I got the sack for my previous job for hitting the boss.

Yes, I think that's a very good way of losing your job.

I think if you if you really want to lose your job,

I think doing something to your boss

or maybe another member of your work team

will get you the sack.

Or maybe you are doing something that you should not.

I got the sack for my previous job for hitting the boss

to be dismissed from your job.

To lose your job in a negative

way is to get the sack.

And I did.

Many years ago, I was actually sacked from a job

because I wasn't doing it very well.

And to be honest with you,

my heart was not in it.

So maybe if your heart is not in something,

it means you don't really feel interested or you don't want to do that thing.

Your heart is not in it.

You don't feel as if you want to do it.

So there is another idiom.

So perhaps if you don't want to work somewhere,

maybe you will try to get the sack.

So some people do that.

They actually try to be dismissed from their job.

They will do something wrong or bad on purpose, so they will get the sack.

But yes, it did happen to me.

I was given the sack many years ago,

but to be honest, I was really bad at it.

I was not very good at the job.

Here's another one.

I like this one.

Now, if you were watching on Sunday, you will know I was talking all about this particular subject.

Sleeping.

I don't know why.

Maybe it's my age, but I really do enjoy sleeping.

I like having a nap in the afternoon.

In fact, after I finish this live stream,

I might actually have a nap, a little lie down on the bed.

And of course, the next morning, after you've had a lovely sleep

the night before, you might say that you slept

like a log to sleep.

Like a log means you have a very good night's sleep.

You sleep well,

you have an undisturbed sleep, you are not bothered by anything.

You don't wake up

because

there is nothing worse than waking up during the night when.

You are trying to sleep.

I have to say it does annoy me a lot.

To sleep like a log is a very positive expression

to sleep well, to have had a good night's sleep.

So you have had a good night's sleep.

The action of a long, restful sleep.

We can say that you slept like a log.

Or maybe tonight you will sleep like a log.

You will be still calm and you will.

You won't wake up.

You might wake up tomorrow morning if you're lucky.

I didn't wake up once last night.

I slept like a log.

I slept so well.

I slept peacefully.

I was still all night.

I didn't wake up.

I didn't move because

I like a log.

It means you have a peaceful sleep.

I like that.

Want to be honest?

Here we go.

Here's another one.

And it is our final one for today,

because I will be going soon

to feast your eyes on something.

Maybe you look at something that is very interesting.

You feast your eyes, you look at something, you want to look at it closely.

You want to look at it carefully.

You want to look at that thing for a long period of time

to feast your eyes on something.

It is a little bit like eating, I suppose.

Maybe if you eat food you are enjoying it.

If you feast your eyes on something, it means you are enjoying

the thing you are looking at.

You feast your eyes on something.

So the definition of that phrase

to look at something with all and amazement.

You feast your eyes on something

to stare longingly.

As an object,

Maybe something you see that you you want, you desire.

You need that thing.

You are looking at it.

You want to have it.

and to help you drop off to sleep.
