but everyone has gone

election crazy this year.

I think it's over

half of the planet,

half of the country is,

or almost all of the countries,

the major countries around

the world

are having elections this year.

So we had some local elections

a couple of days ago,

and lots of people

have been getting very excited

about that.

Also, maybe Latin later

this year.

This is breaking news everyone.

Later this year

there might be a general election

here in the UK.

So all of that looks

as if it is about to be announced

because the government

at the moment

has has suffered

quite a big defeat

in the local elections.

So I thought it would be

a good idea

to talk about this particular

subject today.

Words and phrases connected to it.

Maybe you have

had your own experience

of censorship,

maybe some sort of control

over your freedom,

maybe freedom of places

to, to travel to or to visit,

or maybe your free freedom

of expression as well.

We often talk about a person's

freedom of expression.

So quite often

when we talk about censorship,

we do talk a lot about

freedom of expression,

expressing yourself.

It isn't always about speech.

It can also be about writing

or even art.

So over the years,

there have been situations

where art has been

banned, censored

or even destroyed

for various reasons.

Aubergine is what it actually is.

So we normally

call it an aubergine, but

I also sometimes call it eggplant

because that is the American word

for that particular thing.

that has been made by a person.

really like to be away

from all this rubbish.

I would not be surprised

if the general election here

in the UK occurs

at the same time

that we are away in Italy.

I wouldn't be surprised at all.

A lot of people

have been talking about

what's been going on in

these sort of local elections.

I think a few people

have got the wrong

end of the stick,

wrong end of the stick.

There's another phrase

to misunderstand.

To misunderstand?

it's actually, labour

that have won a lot of seats back.

The conservatives

have, have lost a lot.

So when we talk,

I suppose

I should explain

because it does vary

around the world.

So so the,

the blue team in this country

are the conservative or Tories.

So I think that's where

the confusion comes.

we might have a

brand new government

or a certain type of politics.

everyone seems to be

in the middle,

so everyone agrees

with everyone else.

So there isn't really

any strong point of view.

And of course

when there is quite often

it is criticised or you might find

that there is

censorship,

which happens to be

today's subject.

We will start talking about that

in a few moments

from now, but it is interesting.

I think a lot of people

have just got bored

with the whole thing

because

nothing ever really changes.

It doesn't matter

who you vote for.

and I've been around

for many years, and I've noticed

that whoever

runs the country, it always it

always seems to be chaotic

and nothing

ever seems to get better.

There's been chaos,

of course, since, since Brexit.

that there is censorship

in most countries

around the world,

about that, but just things.

You write things

you show things you, you

you you display.

So, for example, you can't

walk around the streets

with no clothes on.

last week of the man

he had no clothes on?

You see, that,

I suppose, is

something that would be censored.

But then I suppose

that sort of thing is all about

decency

offending people,

because some people

might be offended

by seeing a naked man,

they're never

So I always think

this is an interesting word

because it always looks

as if it's spelt incorrectly.

So this is actually the the verb.

You censor something,

you you remove something,

you take something away

or you hide something,

maybe a thing that a person

has said or done.

because they need people

to watch their news channel

or their news reports.

So that's a good way of

making sure that you get

lots of people watching,

freedom of expression,

freedom of choice.

And I suppose

a way of expressing

your own opinions and feelings

so that that is really

the whole, the whole,

I suppose you might say

it's, it's the,

the atom or the core.

If the internet is complete

and utter freedom.

So generally speaking, law

cannot really touch the internet.

And that's the reason why

you can do more

through the internet

if you are broadcasting,

than if you are bound

by the local rules

of that particular country.

So it is it is very,

very interesting how that works,

because they've been talking a lot

about trying to censor it

and trying to

because of course,

when something is free and open,

the concept, the original concept,

or the philosophy behind

it might have been very good.

but of course, what happens

is that bad people get hold of it

and use it to,

for their own ends, to make money

and to pervert information.

And so probably, you know,

you probably do have to,

introduce some bans here

and there,

certainly certain

certain countries, definitely.

The thing with China, I think,

I always think

China is a good one to talk about

because they've become

almost a hermit state again.

When we talk about the internet,

the internet is once again

enclosed within,

a service

that is within China.

if you go on Tik-Tok in China,

it is a very

different type of website

than the Tik Tok

that we know in the West.

So Tik Tok in

China is more of an

educational website.

It has a lot of people teaching

and information that is given

in a certain type of way.

Whereas in the West, Tik

Tok is people dancing around

in the street

doing their

their jiving in their boogieing

and things like that,

or a dog riding a skateboard,

things like that.

So it's very different.

So I think China

is a very good example of that,

because their internet over

the years has become that, that

their own

internal internet system.

So they have

they have all of the websites

that we have

very similar in certain respects,

like social media, for example,

they have their own

social media sites in China,

but outside China,

those things are forbidden.

And YouTube is a very good example

of that

very good

example indeed.

Every dictatorship on earth

I think over the years,

if there's one thing

that history always shows,

it's that quite often in politics,

people do lie

because you want something,

and quite often

when you want something,

or if you want people

to follow you in a certain way,

then I think it is very hard

not to lie, to be honest.

So I might sympathise a little bit

with people who are in power

who might have to change things

or manipulate things,

but I suppose it

depends how it's done

and what the effect is

by that religion.

people, people in power

are generally, psychopathic.

if you're the sort of person

that wants to get into power

and control people

because that's face it,

that's what it's about

becoming prime minister, becoming

the leader of a big religion.

It's all about trying

to control people.

So ultimately you'll probably do

and say whatever

you need to do to get there.

I think another thing as well,

but another thing as well

with the psych,

the psychology of a person

who wants to be a ruler or to gain

power is is basically about ego,

but also being remembered as well.

They're trying to sort of

put their imprint

on history

in certain ways as well.

So so they have to do things

to make sure that their,

is always remembered

in a nice way.

It's a great word.

strong word

to remove something completely.

So you completely remove

that particular thing.

You are

making sure that no one gets

to see it or to find out about it.

You eliminate

a certain type of information.

You might also eliminate a person

as well.

I mean, to get rid of,

to get rid of something,

to eliminate

something you means

to get rid of it,

to cut back

on what a person can say,

you kerb what they say.

So this is another

interesting word that can be used

as a noun

or a verb.

So the kerb is the thing

that is in place.

And to kerb

something is to restrict

or control how something is done.

And of

course we have the simple word cut

you cut something, maybe a movie,

maybe there's a part of the movie

that people don't want you to see.

They cut that part out.

Maybe if you want to restrict

what people can see,

you might have a blackout.

So this means

one thing from another.

Electricity

about a certain

thing is not allowed.

enough information

on something

that's being reported.

So they have a

until they've got more information

and more facts

instead of speculating

Although these days with

24 hour news,

we don't tend to have blackouts.

They just tend to speculate

until they do know what

the facts are. That's true.

Delete is another one.

Delete something

to remove something.

Quite often these days,

if you

maybe you have an angry morning

and you're feeling unhappy,

you might

put something on the internet

in a moment of anger,

and then later

you will delete that thing

because you realise

maybe you went too far

with what you said.

Yes, you get rid of it,

you remove it, delete.

Here's another one

to redact.

Oh, now this is a good one.

Quite often

when certain types of information

is released

may be government document.

Yes.

Sometimes they have

to remove parts

of the document.

They have to hide it

so people can't see what it says.

They will often redact.

They cover something up.

A thing that is being shown

is covered up or hidden.

You redact because it might be

that you want to protect

certain names of people.

Often when

when they release documents,

that were previously

classified document,

you will see that document,

but there are lots of

it will be blanked out,

because they've redacted

certain information,

because it could be sensitive

and it could contain

people's names,

or something

that could identify people

and it could affect their safety.

It could in fact,

it could also be top secret

information.

Obfuscate is another word

we can use to cover something up

to hide it.

You obfuscate.

Now there is a word

I haven't used for a long time.

You obfuscate something.

Words ban.

the surface of a table

with a cloth.

So when we talk about the opposite

we can talk about openness,

the openness

of a society or a country,

a very open society

where we can

freely express our views,

although quite often

we feel these days

that maybe we can't

always express our views.

parts of society

that's trying to control,

that's always been the case,

a certain amount

of misinformation, information

that is given out

that might be misleading

in some way.

Here's a nice food.

The freedom to do.

The freedom to move, the freedom

to speak, the freedom to express.

But you might believe that

in this country,

in the UK or in England,

there is a lot of

freedom of expression.

But the there are certain things

you can't say or do,

certain things that might create

a feeling of fear or terror

or something

that might be attacking

another group of people unfairly.

So, even in this country,

there are

certain types of control.

But generally speaking,

we have relative

freedom.

Two more,

only two more

choice to have the choice

to have the ability to choose

between certain things.

Maybe if you turn

the television on at night,

you might hear one

point of view,

but then you can turn the channel,

you can retune your TV to

another channel,

and then you will hear

another opinion, the opposite

opinion or a different opinion.

So choice.

Although these days in the UK

you often don't get that a most,

most,

mainstream TV

news is quite left wing biased.

and so you tend to get much

of the same opinion

no matter what

channel you're watching.

But we have got a new channel

called GB news, which is,

tend to take the opposite view.

just to be fair, by the way,

just to be balanced,

quite often the BBC

has been criticised over the years

normally for being

both at sometimes

some points

they are described

as being left leaning,

but other people say

that they will talk about

or the side they take.

But I think sometimes

the BBC is criticised unfairly.
