on sunday and i hope you are having a lovely  weekend there is the view outside my studio  

it's very nice outside although i wouldn't say  that it's sunny it is mild it's very warm today  

once again we are having some rather unseasonal  weather here we go then we are back yes it is  

english addict live from the birthplace of the  english language which just happens to be england

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are  you today are you okay i hope so are you happy  

i hope you are feeling happy  today i'm feeling happy

my name is duncan i like english and that's  it really that's all you need to know i love  

english and i have a feeling you like the english  language as well and yes i talk about the english  

language i love new words i love explaining  words even i with my native english tongue  

even i sometimes discover new words so even  if you are a native english speaker it is  

possible to discover new english words it really  is nice to see you here today yes i'm a person who  

often pops up on youtube especially during october  because this month we are celebrating a special  

milestone a point of time where we will get  together and have a celebration i am 15 next week  

some people say mr duncan do you have the number  15 on your head because that is your mental age

quite possibly actually you might you  might actually have a very good point there  

15 years on youtube and i have to say it  feels like it it really does feel as if  

i've spent the past 15 years on youtube it  really does feel like it my brain is broken  

from the experience to be honest with you yes we  are back together and we have made it to the end  

of another weekend and almost the end  of another month next sunday next sunday  

we will be celebrating the actual date of the  creation of my youtube channel next sunday  

31st of october i hope you  don't miss it yes it's sunday

i don't think there's anything wrong with  tucking your shirt into your underpants it keeps  

everything in place and that's what  i've done today you see i've tucked  

i've put my shirt into my underpants  to stop it from moving around

there's nothing worse than that there's  nothing worse than having your clothes  

uncomfortable especially when you're  standing still and trying to concentrate  

on your live stream so i've tucked everything  right in there today it's all in there nice  

and tight like that can you hear that that is  actually my shirt this shirt i'm wearing now  

tucked right into my underwear it's great some  people say you shouldn't do it some people say  

it's a little sad if you do it but i don't  care i will do it anyway nice to see you  

all here today yes we have made it to the end of  another weekend i hope you've had a good weekend  

we had an interesting day yesterday mr  steve and myself we went out for the day  

something very exciting happened something  rather unusual something that i've only seen  

on television or in movies i've never seen it in  real life so something quite dramatic something  

maybe even a little scary happened whilst we were  sitting in the car yesterday in leamington spa

what what possible thing could be happening in  leamington spa that you might see in movies or  

on television i will tell you a little bit  later on it was rather dramatic actually  

it was quite dramatic we were we were we were  rather surprised at what we saw also yesterday  

we took a trip to a lovely place that steve has  been to before but i've never been to before

and it was a little farm shop a farm  shop have you ever heard of a farm shop  

so this is a shop that actually is owned  by someone who has a farm but they sell  

a lot of produce and other things in their  shop it is a good way of making extra money  

farming in this country i don't know about  your country but this country farming is a very  

difficult profession it's a very different  difficult thing to undertake because there  

isn't much money in it especially nowadays  so for many years farmers have struggled  

to to keep their farms running because there are  lots of overheads lots of things you have to spend  

money on to run the farm so over the years farming  has become less and less profitable so sometimes  

farms might do something else they might open  their farm to the public and show them round  

or allow them to visit and then they will charge  people for for visiting maybe they will have a  

small cafe or a tea room or maybe they will have  a shop where they sell their vegetables and fruit  

so that's the place we went to yesterday a lovely  place and they had the most amazing restaurant  

as well more about that later on a picture of me  sitting at the table in front of my empty plate  

i had the most amazing meal yesterday and  so did mr steve as well so we had some nice  

experiences yesterday some interesting experiences  

and a very dramatic experience also we  will be talking all about that later on  

another thing i want to mention before i forget i  am on next week so from tomorrow to friday don't  

forget i am with you all week but that will be  my final week of quick fix english addict live  

streams that's the final week so from tomorrow  to friday is the final week of my quick fix

well he is crazy but he's also crazy about  greece he loves going to greece i think  

he hasn't told me this but i think  one day he's going to move to greece  

i don't know how easy it is is it easy to move  to greece can you just move to greece and live  

there is it possible now i know some countries it  isn't easy to just move to to a certain country  

i suppose a good example is australia it's very  hard i can't begin to tell you how difficult it is  

if you want to actually move to australia you  have to you have to have all of these conditions  

all of these things that you must have or  have done to to be able to move to australia  

so what about greece is it easy to move to greece  because i think my friend shaun maybe one day  

because he he loves everything greek  he really does including the ouzo

a very popular type of spirit that  is drunk quite a lot in greece

and not that one no not that one either not those  my other favourite subject besides those you know  

what they are we are talking about sleep today  and there is a reason why i want to talk about it  

because yesterday we had a very unusual occurrence  yesterday an unusual moment of time where  

we were waiting for our table to be ready at the  farm shop but nearby there was also a large shop  

that sold beds and all of the things that you use  on your bed and we went in there for a few moments  

because we had we had about 20 minutes before  the table was ready for us so we went in there  

we will talk about this later on by the way  because mr steve has a lot more to say about that  

apparently farming in other countries is also a  difficult thing yes i think many years ago i think  

certain types of farming were more popular if i  were to mention things that are popular in this  

country as far as far as farming is concerned i  would say that dairy farming so many years ago  

dairy farming was was huge dairy farms were  everywhere producing milk these days there are few  

dairy farms so many farmers have found that  they've they can move into other types of  

agriculture or other types of produce and that's  one of the reasons why a lot of farms nowadays go  

into something else they will also diversify oh  i like that word if you diversify it means you  

do something different from what you are doing  as your your main thing you diversify you go off  

and do something slightly different so perhaps  you have a farm but you need to make more money  

so you do something slightly different  maybe you open a shop or a cafe on your farm  

and allow people to visit so if you diversify it  means you go in a different direction whilst doing  

the thing that you normally do you try something  different you go in a different direction  

i do that quite often quite often i go in very  different direction i can tell you saturino oh  

saturino says i have my own little  farm on my balcony i have some vases  

of basil celery chili peppers and other herbs  that sounds interesting you see i think mr  

steve will become very excited by that i think  he will get rather excited by what you're doing  

because because mr steve has always wanted  to have a vegetable plot in in the garden  

growing our own vegetables the only problem is i  think i think sometimes it might be too much work  

but i do like your idea your idea  of having small pots growing herbs

that you would love to live in or or maybe a  country you would like to to move to to live

he is in today he was outside a few moments  ago however at the moment steve has a problem

to be honest with you steve has lots of problems  some of them big problems but at the moment steve  

has a dilemma he's trying to find a very good  pair of running shoes so he can go running  

during the winter months i think he wants  something that he can use when he's running on mud  

so if you are a person who likes to go running  or maybe if you are a person who likes running  

in all weathers like mr steve maybe you can  give him some advice a little bit later on  

talking of mr steve yes he will be with us soon  and before then we are going to have a look at  

one of my youtube videos don't forget for the  past 15 years i have made so many youtube videos  

i think around about a thousand i think so i think  it's a it's it's around about 1 000 videos i've  

made and maybe maybe more maybe more than that  so let's have a look at one of those videos this  

is one of my full english lessons and after this  we are going to talk to mr steve who apparently  

has one or two problems also we will be  talking about something very dramatic  

that we saw happening yesterday all  of that coming up right after this

here in the uk but i hope you are feeling cosy  and warm and you are okay today before i begin  

i would like to give you a little brain teaser so  as to warm up those sleepy synapses what word can  

be used alongside the following five words the  words are bag stalk counter runner baked i will  

give you the answer at the end of today's  video lesson so get those thinking caps on

as you know i love food and i couldn't resist  mentioning an expression that is often used  

before we think about something we've just heard  the phrase is food for thought a thing heard or  

read that resonates or lingers in your mind or has  the possibility to change your view of something  

might be described as food for thought that speech  of yours has given me a lot of food for thought  

the thing said has given you something  new or challenging to think about  

it has fed some new information into your brain  it has made you think deeply about a certain idea  

or topic you might even change your opinion  because of it that new idea or opinion has  

given you something to chew over in your  mind it has given you some food for thought

can you see what is behind me it is something  that is hidden away so it might be hard to see  

oh there it is this is a nest box it is an  artificial space where bird eggs can be nurtured  

until the chicks growing inside them are ready  to hatch out so this nest box will allow a pair  

of birds to add their own bedding such as grass  and moss to the inside of the box the word nest  

can be used in many ways to hide something  away in a safe place as a verb is nest  

you nest you place something away for safe keeping  you can have a nest egg which is the sum of money  

that is saved over a number of years the money  is often invested so as to gather interest  

you want your money to be worth more in the future  for when you retire so a nest egg is something  

that will be used at a later date a large quantity  or number of animals living in a certain location  

can be described as a nest a collection of  furniture that belongs together and is easy  

to pack away and store can be described as a  nest for example you can have a nest of tables  

all the different sized tables  can be stored inside each other  

a place where a person likes to rest and  relax so as to feel cosy and safe is a  

nest hopefully soon there will be a family  of birds nesting inside this nest box  

a pair of birds will build a nest together and  raise their own brood of chicks i wonder what type  

of bird will be living in there could it be a pair  of blue tits perhaps we will have to wait and see

it's time to take a look at another buzz  word a buzz word is a word or phrase that  

is often used during a certain period or  is generally popular today's buzzword is  

generic the word generic can be used as both  an adjective and a noun as an adjective generic  

means to belong to a group with no precise or  exact classification the thing in question is  

named by its group without naming a single  characteristic we are using its generic name  

the overall characteristics are being identified  generically as belonging to a certain group  

or genus certain types of medicine with no clear  brand name are often referred to as generic  

something with no clear individual  identity is generic as an insult  

a person might describe an uninspiring idea  that lacks originality or thought as generic  

as a noun generic refers to an unbranded product  and is normally associated with types of medicine

can you see what i'm doing over there i'm sitting  on the fence i'm enjoying the view and taking in  

some fresh air there is a phrase that exists in  english which refers to the position in which  

i'm sitting right now to sit on the fence  this phrase refers to a person who cannot  

or will not express their own opinion or take  any particular side in a dispute or argument to  

remain neutral without expressing your personal  opinion can be described as sitting on the fence  

you might be willing to listen to the discussion  but you are unwilling to get involved directly  

we often use this expression negatively when  describing a person who seems unwilling to express  

their own thoughts you two can argue all day but  if you don't mind i would rather sit on the fence  

there you go again avoiding the  problem by sitting on the fence  

you will have to get involved at some point  you can't keep sitting on the fence to sit on  

the fence is to remain neutral you don't want to  get involved you would rather keep your opinion  

to yourself you abstain withhold hold back  decline you keep your feelings to yourself  

by not expressing an opinion decision or  choice you have chosen to sit on the fence

the globe yes here we are once again on a  fun-filled sunday afternoon with mr duncan  

what i what i've noticed what i've noticed  over the past couple of weeks is my viewing  

or the the audience always increases around  this time it's almost as if they are joining  

just to see you oh no definitely not mr  duncan i mean what have i got to offer  

that's true not a lot well mr duncan i'm keeping  a keen eye on the weather outside okay then why  

because i want to cut the grass okay hopefully for  the last time before the winter because here in  

the uk the grass stops growing around november  time and doesn't start doesn't start growing  

again until the weather gets warmer in around  march i'm surprised you've got any grass left  

because you seem to be cutting it all the time  well i mean i only cut it down to the same level  

but of course i don't like to cut it when it's  wet because it clogs up the machine okay so i'm  

hoping we according to the forecast we've  got a 50 chance of rain this afternoon well  

it was raining earlier i know spitting spitting a  little so i don't want that to happen because it  

will ruin my plans to cut the grass anyway that's  that's that's my sort of first world problem yes  

mr steve has such a difficult life don't you you  you always have a new problem to solve including  

finding a pair of running shoes a suitable  pair of running shoes i can't begin to tell you  

how much time and and energy steve is putting  in to finding a pair of running shoes in fact  

i think he's using more energy to find the  running shoes than if he was actually running  

well do you know what it's like when you want to  buy something new and there are lots of different  

brands available and then within those brands  there are lots of different versions of certain  

names of shoes you have to find the right one for  you yes and the problem if anyone does any running  

anybody out there like going running please let  us know but the trouble is because it's very  

hilly around here i don't go on the road lots  of hills i don't go on the road so i go sort of  

sort of you would call it sort of cross country  probably yes well on ground on grass on mud also  

in all sorts of weather so i need something that  will grip into uphill and downhill uneven ground  

and mud thick mud so i need something with not  spikes no but lugs what they call lugs underneath  

a shoe yeah on the sole so they look like  they're little pieces of plastic that stick out  

yes they're like spikes but they're made of so i'm  at the moment you see i bought a pair last year  

um with five millimetre looks yes okay let's not  get into the tank not quite enough you see i'm  

going for eight millimetre now because i'm still  slipping even in the five millimetre so yes so  

i'm looking at certain makes of shoes mr duncan  and going onto the website and trying to find out  

which is the best one for me yes so i don't know  if anyone does any running in extreme conditions  

please let us know uh as to what particular brands  or types of shoes you have found yeah it's a  

useful it's a pretty uh random question to ask  very random but if i say no more random than usual  

i'm looking at innovate i'm looking at  salomon uh so let me know what you think okay  

look yes two pairs of running shows says magdalene  one pair for summer and one for winter with wool  

socks yes if you're a serious runner you have to  have two at least two uh types of running shoe  

you have to have a light one for summer use and  something that's maybe waterproof and capable of  

going over rough wet soggy ground in the winter  i'm starting to regret mentioning this well do  

you know what i'm like i don't do things by half  no well but this but this is bringing me on to  

yesterday you see so yesterday we were doing one  or two things we had the most delicious meal which  

we will be talking about a little bit later we  also went somewhere else a place called leamington  

leamington spa a place that sounds as if nothing  dramatic ever happens well it's a peaceful sort of  

middle class sort of town fairly people that are  you wouldn't say they were badly off you would say  

they were i would say above average yes i i would  say it's a place that tends to have a certain  

image of being maybe sophisticated because it has  the royal in front you see it's a special type of  

town it is called royal leamington spa so it it  it's it's a little bit precocious to be honest  

but we were surprised yesterday we were sitting  in steve's car parked along a lovely leafy road  

and it was expensive houses expensive houses  it it it seemed like the perfect moment of time  

when suddenly well i spotted it first out of  the corner of my eye i was aware of someone  

walking around hanging around sitting on one  of the walls suspicious very suspicious looking  

and i said to steve i said look at that guy  over there he looks like a drug dealer he  

looks like he's dealing drugs because when  you imagine a drug dealer you always have  

a certain image in your mind of a drug  dealer what they look like and this man  

fitted every stereotype every description  you could probably have of a drug dealer he  

was acting suspiciously it was quite cold and  yet he was wearing uh a fashionable top with no  

sleeves yes it was a jelly yes no that's  odd that looked odd for a start unshaven  

just i mean he was sitting in people's driveways  on his phone yeah then sitting on walls doing odd  

things that you wouldn't normally do he was very  suspicious well he was hanging around hanging  

around he was just waiting and he looked like  he was waiting for something or someone he kept  

texting on his phone then looking around then he  walked up a bit further well anyway we felt like  

we were sort of undercover police officers  no well we didn't we didn't at that moment  

because because all i said was he looks like a  drug dealer so we sat there for a while didn't  

we we sat there for a while let's see what goes  on here and then he he was still there but then  

he moved slightly further down the road and  then then a car came up the road behind us and  

parked on the opposite side a souped-up audi yes  okay probably about six or eight years old with  

they'd obviously fitted oversized wheels and all  sorts of body kit to it immediately i'm suspicious  

and there is the flow of my story gone go on well  i'm just painting the picture well it's a car  

that's all you need to know really yes  but you know the man inside looked a bit  

yes the man drew up in the car yes and  then the the other guy that was waiting  

and looking suspicious he was also once again on  his phone sending a message and then he got up  

and went to the car yes and got in to the  passenger door and sat down in there anyway  

they drove off together behind us they they  turned around and went back the other way  

only about 20 meters but yes i'm getting to that  steve i'm setting the scene but as they came to  

the junction the car stopped and the young lad  who looked suspicious got out and walked off  

and we suddenly realized that we  had just witnessed a drug deal  

yes yes right in front of our right in front of  our eyes in lemington spa in posh mind you see  

everyone's taking drugs these days mr duncan well  well not everyone can i just say well we're not  

no we're not well that's not everyone unless you  can't coffee no okay steve but imagine that so so  

we were just sitting right in front of us didn't  couldn't care less i think he was acting a bit  

suspicious well i don't know i mean had we been  police officers we could have raced after them  

yeah well we wouldn't and caught them not what you  normally do is you have some sort of backup so we  

would be the people watching you see with our with  our radios hello hello roger juan roger one over  

and then we would get in touch with  the other policemen that were nearby  

but it's weird i've never seen  that before in my sheltered life  

i've never seen it before i've never seen a real  drug deal taking place right in front of our eyes  

it was obvious that that's what would what would  have happened in Leamington probably this goes  

on all the time in towns up and down the country  but not leamington not leamington spa well well  

you see the thing is mr duncan they've done some  research on people that take drugs like cocaine  

and uh the people with lots of money okay  businessmen uh wives stuck at home wives  

yes apparently you're telling me that housewives  are doing with rich husbands yes doing the dishes  

well i don't know about that washing  the clothes and then taking cocaine  

well all i know is that there's a lot of people  mr duncan i can see you nodding shaking your head  

uh a lot of people who you would think don't take  drugs actually do it's quite a problem amongst  

people who have lots of disposable income not  necessarily maybe i know not necessarily i'm  

just saying it does happen mr tucker yes it can  happen everywhere but you would think wouldn't  

you that somebody in a in a good job well-paid  job seemed to have everything wouldn't need drugs  

but apparently they do and lots of them are taking  them sort of at work just openly but you wouldn't  

suspect them because they don't look like druggies  they're not sort of dressed what drug is that is  

a word you use somebody who takes it a druggie  yes okay steep calm down oh wouldn't you agree  

i think you might be on drugs today i'm on nothing  i'm just on the high of life are you sure that guy  

didn't push something through your car window i  didn't think if he's got anything interesting no  

i'd not really okay steve let's i've only got 10  pounds let's not say things like that because we  

have a certain amount of credibility we've got  to well we've lost most of it you can't come  

on here onto youtube and have credibility it's  not easy to get to be honest thank you ricardo  

i need trail sneakers made with gore-tex  yes gore-tex is good because it's waterproof  

but apparently i've discovered you can get  waterproof socks okay because i've got a  

pair of running shoes that are not waterproof  and it's quite annoying when you're running on  

long grass and it's wet your feet get wet  and but apparently some running shoes they  

don't like to have waterproofing in it because  it's i don't know why but there's a reason why  

so this shop told me oh you you can buy waterproof  socks no couldn't you just put your feet in  

plastic bags well i have done that yes i have done  that that would save a lot of money you could just  

use plastic bags so instead of instead of buying  expensive socks you could just put a couple of  

carrier bags on your feet anarchy says is there  a slang word to name a drug dealer so people that

people that consume drugs you call them a druggie  don't you yes a druggie a drug dealer uh there  

probably are slang words i would say watch  breaking bad well a dealer a dealer dealer  

we normally just say dealer he's a dealer he's a  dealer she's a dealer do you know any dealers yes

we should not be judging people by their  appearance apparently according to tomic we're  

not judging them well we're not judging them no  we're just saying we witnessed it look if if you  

want to sell drugs on the street corner we are not  going to judge you for that but but it is illegal  

it's just you know you don't expect to see it  no you don't expect to see it in broad daylight  

whilst you parked your car in a  leafy suburb of Leamington spa  

that's why i was surprised i mean if i was  parked in i don't know Hansworth in birmingham  

oh well i think well there you go or kings heath  king's heath are you sure you've picked an area  

there that's worthy of uh slagging off i'm  not slacking it off i'm not criticizing it  

but yes maybe or bilston bilston there we go near  wolverhampton or or anywhere in wolverhampton if  

it had been sort of late at night but this was 11  o'clock in the morning yeah well it was later than  

that it was about 12 30. last night lunchtime  sorry no no it was about harvest one in the  

afternoon in broad daylight and it was happening  right next to us and this guy was just so open  

he just couldn't care less he was just like  yeah yeah i'm selling drugs on the streets  

what's your problem somebody asked is it illegal  yes it is yes very very even marijuana is  

has been downgraded cocaine's definitely illegal  marijuana has been downgraded i think it's still  

illegal but you if you're caught carrying certain  amounts i don't know what the amount is so many  

grams then you won't be arrested anymore but it's  still i think illegal isn't it it's very illegal  

even though it seems that half the population are  actually using it which we're not judging we're  

not judging although we kind of you know we'd  rather you didn't we'd rather not you know because  

i you know it's still i mean well it's illegal  it's illegal and i mean if it you know i don't  

know i'm not going to say anything about drug use  because you've just literally been talking about  

it for five minutes we're not judging we're not  we're not judgments we observed this but quite  

often we will classify drugs illegal drugs so  for example as class a drugs which which are the  

hard drugs like cocaine and heroin and what's the  other one crystal meth anyway it certainly broke  

we seem to know a lot about certainly wrote tomec  up we've seen tricks we seem to know a lot about  

drugs for people that don't touch them well i've  had friends that you use you know in fact i had a  

friend whose brother was a drug dealer where does  he live he's dead now well there you go if you  

needed if you needed a moral to the story i think  i think that's pretty much it actually he died of  

a drug overdose so that i think that actually  goes to show that it's probably not a good idea  

you seem very jolly about that i'm not jolly  about it uh because it was quite sad at the time  

and then he died of a drug sofa i'm not i'm not  but i mean it was sad at the time but you know  

that's the danger isn't it that's life you mean  you you you you take your chances don't you same  

with with anything alcohol cigarettes uh drugs  i mean they say marijuana is a lot safer than  

um yeah okay alcohol you know but it depends we're  not gonna get into that yeah let's not get into  

that at all we just observed we're not judging  we're not judging we'd i don't know what his life  

was before he got into drug dealing maybe he had  an abusive parents maybe his parents used drugs or  

he's got into bad companies with friends so just  you know he just took on the family business you  

know that's what normally happens with sons they  normally take on the family business right son  

it's time to teach you the trade that we've been  doing for years and years okay get out on that  

street and sell that smack well it's like smoking  a lot of peo a lot of people smoke if their  

parents have smoked because a lot of people get  overweight if their parents are overweight okay or  

they're siblings it's just you tend to do what the  most people are around you tend to do what they do  

asics yes that's a good choice i've got a pair  of a6 i love the way we keep swapping between  

the subject of running shoes and drug dealing  i've got a pair of a6 for summer use but they're  

not they haven't got deep enough treads for the  winter actually it's interesting because if you  

were a drug dealer you would definitely need a  pair of running shoes just in case the police  

came and then you could run away very quickly  satorina says we call druggie people tosico

uh that's a good name tossing yeah what a load of  tunnels what a load of toxic what a load of toxics  

uh yes so anyway that was our uh oh uh palmyra  says i'm taking a cup of tea with cannabis leaves  

why not yes well that you can get cannabis  oil now can't you this is the latest  

health thing it's like a resin but it's but it  hasn't got any of the narcotic no it's got some  

active ingredients in from the cannabis leaf  which is supposed to have medicinal properties  

but somebody you've got to be very careful what  country you take that to because somebody has been  

sent to prison for 20 years a british person for  having cannabis oil used for medicinal you know  

i can't remember which country i think it would  be somewhere in the middle east maybe saudi  

arabia somewhere like that i want to say saudi  arabia maybe the arab emirates or maybe qatar  

i have a feeling it was saudi arabia but you  do have to be careful actually if you go to  

the middle east you have to be careful even if  you take prescription drugs with you as well so  

some drugs some medicine that is available here in  this country and you can take it as a prescription  

are actually illegal in the middle east so you  do have to be very careful when you are traveling  

to certain countries even if the medicine you're  taking with you is is approved here you have you  

can't take it to another country so you do have  to make sure you check the laws certain strong  

painkillers like co-codamol for example which has  small amounts of codeine in it which is um a drug  

that makes you very sleepy it's used for pain but  it's supposedly got slightly addictive qualities  

to it but over here co-codamol is a very popular  painkiller uh it's not seen as being particularly  

addictive but if you go with those painkillers  to for example dubai yes which a lot of brits  

might say a lot but wealthy people in  britain will travel to dubai to do shopping  

and if you are caught with certain painkillers  that are perfectly legal here you'll be arrested  

uh because they're you know zero tolerance to  all types of drugs ones that are potentially  

um addictive yeah what i find interesting also is  many of those drugs that we see as hard drugs now  

were originally medicinal drugs given out to  people so for example opium originally was was  

prescribed to people cocaine also which then  was discovered to be highly addictive and then  

they came up with another one and they called it  heroin and and that also was very addictive so so  

a lot of the drugs that are now seen as illegal  in many countries were originally prescribed  

matt says you've opened a can of worms we have  well i wouldn't say well it's it is a subject  

that's talked about a lot even in sport a can  of worms so if you if you that that expression  

yes if you open a can of worms it means you  have you have opened a big argument or a big  

discussion sometimes get messy yeah something that  that you might lose control of yes is opening a  

can of worms that's talking about uh religion  or politics yes you can open a can of worms i.e  

things can wriggle about it can get very nasty and  messy and and people fall out with each other but  

we're not going to fall out with anybody no it is  an interesting subject and we did see it yesterday  

in fact i think earlier someone said i can't  remember who now i think it may have been  

i think it may have been saturino but we're not  judging said it must have been quite excited i  

think i would have been excited well i was i was  well it was it was scary i was slightly worried  

that if they saw us they'd have to uh they'd  have to eliminate us because we've been witnesses  

anyway let's thankfully they didn't  now we are going down a very dark road  

i had visions of them seeing as they're  following us and yes okay steve that didn't  

happen thankfully i think they were too high to  notices it clearly didn't happen because we're  

still here this time i know but i'm just saying  you know that could have been a possibility yes  

yes it could have been but it wasn't but we're  not judging we're going to take drugs take  

care of it if you have no money and you find  out that selling drugs on the street corner  

in broad daylight in the middle of  Leamington spa is this is your way of living  

i'm not going to judge but the police might  you see the the law might judge you how mirror  

says that i remember in my childhood  farm growing very tall cannabis plants

well that's the thing i mean they're easy to grow  

uh and if apparently mr duncan if you buy  bird seed which we've got lots of bird seed  

you can if you just there's always cannabi  apparently there's cannabis seeds quite often in  

commercially bought bird seeds so i think if you  sort of plant enough around your garden and see  

what comes up we might see that familiar familiar  shape with the cannabis leaf i always think  

i always think that the the cannabis leaf looks a  bit like the canadian flag is there any connection  

there well in most of america and lots of i'd  say most in lots of states in america now it is  

perfectly legal to buy and consume uh cannabis  well yeah is it legal in in certain states that's  

it but it also has to be on prescription as well  well there are shops you can go to shops yes  

but you can only buy so much and it must be for  personal use but not here it's not happening here  

we are still we are still very anti-drugs  anti-illegal drugs here in the uk anyway  

you've opened a can of worms let's shut that can  shut yes let's shut that can shut well if the sh  

push those worms back into the cat and so you  should be used to that and uh steve is always  

pushing a worm can't blame me can't blame me for  this one mr doom there we go oh it's straight  

forward it's used to make ropes that is correct  yes well there is a theory that one of the reasons  

why drugs were made illegal is because hemp  was also a very good material for making paper  

and apparently somebody else who  wanted to to use a different material  

paid the the government to to make hemp illegal  i'm not sure how true that is but but there is  

a past of course to all of this in the past all  of these things have have their own back stories  

including the interesting point that that most  well we used to give arsenic to people as medicine  

one of the most dangerous things we used to put  an arsenic in medicine yes as beatrice points  

out the moral problem is the behaviour and actions  which people do when they when they're under the  

influence of drugs you're right that's the issue  good point particularly particularly the more  

addictive ones where people are more inclined to  undertake sort of criminal behaviour because they  

need more of it so they're more likely to commit  crimes robbery and things like that yes uh don't  

think that tends to happen with cannabis but it  certainly does with the more with the harder drugs  

that's it and of course that argument is often  made with alcohol as well because of all the crime  

all of the injuries all of the death that  occurs because people are drinking alcohol  

and so that is a drug really it's a type  of drug but it just happens to be legal  

there we go cannabis seeds were used in  lithuanian cuisine for ages before on christmas  

uh yes yes there are that's it marcie there  are lots of medicines made with cannabis where  

they take out the where they take out the the the  hallucinogenic or whatever drug side of it uh used  

to treat health problems but yeah everything's  addictive chocolate is addictive i think sugar's  

highly addictive yes uh i mean i mean sugar  is really addictive watching my live streams  

yes should be banned yes well you should be banned  mr i don't know if you've noticed steve the word  

addict is literally in the title of my live  stream english addict you see so you can be  

addicted to english as well learning a language  alcohol well there we go you see that's a drug so  

there are so many yes where do you stop which  ones do you make legal which ones do you make  

illegal it's a very complicated subject so  i think we should i think it's raining okay

well if you have a poppy seed bun and go and if  you were say an olympic runner and then you had  

to go for a blood test you would probably test  positive because athletes have been caught out  

eating poppy seeds going for a drug test because  small amounts of drugs will be in your system  

from the poppy seeds wasn't that an episode  of seinfeld no it's true if you eat poppy  

seeds and then go for a drug test you'll  probably come up positive even though the  

amounts are very small and athletes as i said  have been caught out you know eating bread with  

poppy seeds on and not realizing that this  will because the tests are very sensitive  

um will come up positive so you've got to be very  careful about things like that stefano makes an  

interesting point people get crazy about taking  any poison any putting things into their veins  

yeah like different types of drugs illegal drugs  yet they they then complain about the covid jab  

so yes i think that's quite a good one oh all of  us are addicts with english or of english with mr  

duncan mr duncan is our sweet drug oh how lovely  isn't that nice yes i've always wanted to be  

referred to as a type of narcotic oh talking of  which isn't that strange we are really sliding in  

to today's subject very well i i thought that was  very good did you see what i did there oh dead be  

so big-headed mr duncan narcotics of course  narcotics is a word for something that makes  

you feel high or drowsy or sleepy which happens  to be today's topic ah look at that we don't  

just we don't just throw this together some people  think we rehearse this some people have accused us  

of getting up at seven o'clock in the morning and  actually rehearsing this but we don't i don't see  

steve all morning until he walks in here and then  that's it that that's and you know nothing about  

this nothing you never know what what we're going  to talk about which is why i come out with rubbish  

most of the time because i've had no time to think  about it that's true and then i'm having to use my  

memory and my brain to come up with something that  sounds like it could be interesting besides seeing  

someone selling drugs yesterday we also went for a  lovely meal as well mr steve took me look at that

yeah uh alessandra said in the past poppy  seeds were used to make babies fall asleep  

that's a good idea maybe yes you get a mild  dose of something well in this country they give  

they give they give the babies uh um painkillers  to help them fall asleep do you think that  

yes it's a well-known fact uh amongst um  mothers and fathers that if their children  

are playing out their babies are crying a lot  they just give them a dose of uh paracetamol  

i've never heard of that yeah there's a there's  a certain brand of uh of painkiller for babies uh  

and you give them a dose of that and it sends them  to sleep apparently does it work on dogs uh well i  

mean in the past parents used to give their they  they used to give their babies and young children  

out alcohol because i had a friend who who  remembers his parents giving him shots of brandy  

to help us see i know now why babies find it  difficult to walk because they're all pissed  

sorry drunk poppy seed cake yes well i might try  that yes i sometimes think i want some kind of  

mild legal drug to sort of settle me down  sometimes i think i get a bit sort of agitated  

i think i need something just to sort of ah just  take the edge off you need something take the edge  

off you need something that's what they say don't  they alcohol drop of alcohol takes the edge off so  

it just just just sort of smooths things a bit  makes you feel a bit calmer more in control in  

control that's right but it doesn't because over  time you need more and more of it cough syrup yes  

you end up doing what river phoenix did yes cough  syrup often has ingredients in it which can make  

you sleepy so we went out yesterday it's what  i'm trying to get into before we talk about sleep  

but we will be talking about  sleep so don't go to sleep  

maybe talking about sleep will make you feel  sleepy yesterday we went out and steve took  

me to a place that he's been to before a farm  shop we talked about this earlier at the very  

start of today's live stream but yesterday  we went to a place called beckett's farm  

beckett's farm and it's not just a farm it also  has a restaurant and we had the most delicious  

food there i was impressed mr steve you were  well i know how to please mr duncan you do  

anything involving food and uh will soon  bring him round yes steve always knows how to  

how to get me i nearly said aroused but  not aroused he doesn't know that one but  

but we well mr steve had a burger and i had what  they call beckett's old faithful apparently it's  

the best breakfast in the midlands and it was  voted the breakfast that i had yesterday was voted  

the best breakfast of the best breakfast awards  in the midlands which is where we were a region of  

the uk yesterday and it was i have to be  honest with you it was what i would call  

definitely award-winning it was it was the most  delicious meal and just to prove it here i am with  

my empty plate so i'm having my last mouthful of  chips and there i am and i look very happy by the  

way i also look rather slim i have lost a bit of  weight you know although after that meal must have  

contained about 3 000 calories yes now i think  actually yes you look very happy there um so you  

know i would what i did yesterday was obviously  a good thing for you um maybe we could go through  

maybe people are interested yes in what is on this  plate of a typical or a british breakfast yes uh  

that we refer to as a sort of all-day breakfast  yes so a typical english breakfast normally has  

maybe chips or sliced potatoes that are fried  maybe an egg fried egg fried egg there on the  

bottom left scrambled egg also you can see some  mushrooms mushrooms in the middle at the bottom

fried tomato yes um sausages mmm now  what you can and you just about you  

can't really see it there but there's bacon  on there as well yes there's bacon and also  

this is not for you if you're a muslim by the way  we will point that out the best part of course the  

baked beans there's a lot of pork involved in this  meal apologies too okay steve you made your point  

i don't make beans and fried bread baked beans the  best part of the meal steve baked beans oh olga  

says it looks like a continental breakfast i had  a similar breakfast today yes i think continental  

breakfasts have a bit of everything on them that  people would eat on when we say continental we  

to us that would mean european so it depends  where you are at the time so continental would be  

outside the area where you normally exist so it's  like saying going abroad well if i went to england  

i wouldn't be going abroad because i already  live here so it's always the opposite or a  

place outside the region or country where  you normally live so a continental breakfast  

to us isn't that it's maybe a european breakfast  with lots of bread and cold meat cold cuts as they  

call it but to you maybe a continental breakfast  would be chips egg bacon sausage and baked beans  

of course now you can you can substitute  the uh the bacon and the sausages for  

vegetable vegetarian versions uh as well  which is quite popular now um but um  

there's no there's no vitamin c in that probably  and maybe a bit from the potatoes not much  

uh and of course mr duncan being very healthy uh  doesn't like the uh tomato or the mushroom so he  

immediately puts those onto my plate i don't like  mushrooms so you just have the unhealthy things  

mr duncan does this with a lot of meals he picks  out all the things which most people would think  

with the healthy bits not always the vegetables  that sticks to all the the fried stuff not always  

sometimes i do i know sometimes i do yes i pick  out maybe things that did i don't like the look or  

the taste off i think so yes uh going back to  drugs yeah but that's it that was nice that was uh  

you see well they'll know you see this  links in with something anarchy has said  

scientists think our brains are capable of  producing substances similar to some drugs  

or even stronger yeah and of course this is  what happens when you do something that you like  

like consuming a meal that is really  you're really enjoying it you get these  

endorphins being released these are the  the powerful chemicals your brain releases  

serotonin makes you feel good serotonin well it's  the endorphins they're they're the feel when you  

have some chocolate or when you have a meal that  you really like uh or other activities that you  

might enjoy your brain releases these sort of  well it's probably a bit like opium or something  

and it makes you feel good and then you want  to do that thing again which is why you know  

you'll want another one of those meals next week  because you'll be craving that endorphin rush  

that you've got from that meal a lot of people  say the same thing about the internet of course  

they say that the internet is a place where  people go to get their fix of of being a feeling  

good about themselves they get a little rush of  endorphins in their brain when a person likes  

their photograph or maybe if a person leaves a  nice comment you always want to have that feeling  

of being liked admired wanted instagram a lot  of people on there go on there because they want  

to have that endorphin rush when someone likes  them maybe you are showing your bottom on camera  

and they say oh you have a lovely bottom and then  that person goes oh that person likes my bottom  

and you get a little rush of  endorphins in your brain yes

so there but it was a nice meal and the service  also was very good can i just say i know this  

sounds like an advertisement but it isn't but we  had the most amazing service and you know what  

sometimes it's very hard to get good service and  there was a young lady who served us yesterday and  

she was so patient wasn't she what was her name  i don't know i can't remember but we didn't ask  

because that because that would be creepy you see  you never ask someone's name if they don't have a  

name badge which they didn't but she did such a  good job she was so patient with us because we  

are both sometimes a little bit fussy when we're  ordering food so she was so patient wasn't she  

she was just very nice it was really nice  it made the whole experience great so can  

i say a personal thank you to beckett's  farm shop and also restaurant yesterday  

i don't think we say thank you enough for people  who give you good service do you think they're  

watching as mr duncan i don't think so and of  course you you were so impressed you gave the the  

the girl that served as a tip didn't you i gave  her a tip yeah she said to her next time be quick  

be faster no that's not that's not really what i  did you see that two there's two uh two ways of  

of uh two meanings to the word tip if you  give a tip to somebody you're giving them a  

little some money to thank from thank them for  what they've done or you could give them a tip  

which is a helpful bit of information isn't  it a tip can also be the end of something  

yes the end of maybe maybe if i look down and mr  steve is wearing no underpants i might see his tip  

you'd have to look a long way down mr  duncan i'm only joking it's not easy to spot  

so so a tip that i gave yesterday is is what we  call a gratuity a gratuity i love that word so  

you are showing your gratitude so i gave her  a tip i gave her a little little bit of money  

afterwards because i thought she was so patient  with us and yes we are very awkward if you ever  

serve us in a restaurant expect a lot of fussiness  from us too magdalene magdalene yes sports can  

make you addictive because when you do lots of  running uh that releases the endorphins and if  

you stop doing it you crave the running because  you want the you want the endorphins it does  

do that people people can get hooked on certain  activities and running i believe is one of them  

that people can get hooked on they do more and of  course like any drug you want more and more of it  

and you you have to you do then do more and  more running then you might get injuries  

and i must admit mr duncan i've been  doing a lot more running recently  

almost every day well five days a week and for  the last month to try i'm trying to get fitter  

um and uh i've i've found if i don't have  that run now i'm beginning to feel you know  

as though i've i'm missing it yeah so maybe i'm  getting a bit addicted to the running yes um  

maybe i would to maybe i'm a drug addict mr duncan  well yes maybe you're addicted to the endorphins  

yes the rush of endorphins to your brain because  afterwards sometimes you come back for a from a  

from a run like any sustained um exercise and i  just feel sort of so calm afterwards it's like  

nothing can make me upset because i've just sort  of i'm in a bit of a high from from and it is  

something is released it can't last very long  exercises it doesn't last forever it doesn't last  

very long it doesn't take long for steve to become  grumpy again although tomic has advised me to take  

c d b oil yes that's the one uh which will relax  me take the edge off so that is the that is like  

the resin that has none of the hallucinogenic  properties but there's something in it yes uh  

but so i might try that i might try that but what  an interesting conversation we've had today that  

i wasn't expecting us to go that deep into the  subject but that is the fun that is the wonderful  

thing about doing a live stream we are the  only people that do this by the way no one else  

no other english teacher does a live  stream like this not one that's why  

i won't say that um belarusia says i've never  eaten beans and tomatoes for breakfast and a few  

people have said that although it's interesting  because obviously baked beans have tomato sauce  

in them yes so you know they should go together  shouldn't they i think so yeah they should do when  

you think about it logically but i don't actually  like the tomato with the breakfast i don't like it  

there's something even though you know  baked beans contain a lot of tomato sauce  

somehow that fried tomato i don't like that in  a breakfast i love the mushrooms but not the  

fried tomatoes so everyone has their own  choice when you have a selection of food  

anyway another thing i want to quickly talk about  because we are talking about sleep but yes lots  

of people are talking about sleep in a moment  we're talking about it so when we went to the  

restaurant yesterday the young lady said oh we we  can't give you a table yet you have to come back  

in about 20 or 30 minutes so she gave us a little  device that you put in your pocket and then when  

your table is ready it will make a buzzing sound  which i thought was brilliant what a brilliant  

idea so we could walk away and walk around and  and that thing would then buzz which it did  

when our table was ready about half an hour later  yes you're jumping to the end of the story but

before we did that we thought we have a bit  of time to spare didn't we a bit we had half  

an hour to spare and we thought what should we  do and we noticed opposite this farm was a shop  

selling beds and pillows beds pillows everything  to do with going to bed sleeping all of the things  

connected with that and it just so happens  that we are looking for some new pillows  

for the bed so we went in there didn't we however

secretly and i don't want you know i i  know this is going to make us look very bad  

secretly we just wanted to waste a bit of time  no i seriously we did want some new pillows  

we did want some new pillows however

when it comes to me buying anything i  can't make decisions so as soon as we went  

in there and started asking about pillows  it wasn't we were suddenly presented with  

probably eight different types of pillow yes all  made from different constructions and there is no  

way on earth i could make a decision like that  they all had different types of materials you  

would think nowadays buying a pillow would be  simple but no they have so many different types  

of pillow for your bed to rest your head on  yeah they have things with foam inside some  

things with feathers some things with a mixture  other things that have gels in them cooling gel  

so when you lie on your pillow the pillow will  always be cool on your face because a lot of  

people don't like it you see when they're lying  down on their pillow yes olga and it gets hot  

olga's are green with us i want a new pillar  but i can't choose so many different types of  

pillows i know what and then and the trouble is  as we just don't shout steve you didn't you you're  

not you're not on the phone now there wasn't a  pillow in that shop that cost less than 70 pounds  

yes so they're they're about well that's sort  of 1890 euros 80 pounds for for one pillow so  

you know if you make a mistake with that  pillow and get it home and don't like it  

bother they've been 160 pounds nearly 200 euros  who i i can't make those sort of decisions quickly  

i can't even believe that there are people  who will spend 160 pounds on two pillows  

are they mad i mean and all that's  in most of them is just foam

i mean we looked inside and it was just pieces  of foam well there's no way that pillow is worth  

80 euros into in my mind they can't have  spent more than five euros making it  

i keep saying euros yes only  because it just sounds so  

i say pounds it sounds wrong to me well  they're almost the same euros and pounds

it sounds so strange when you say euros yes so  i mean did you go for i mean and then you're  

faced with questions like they ask you as he asked  well do you mainly sleep on your back on your side  

or on your front because depending on how you  sleep then you need a different type of pillow  

and then oh my goodness do we have feathers do  i foam do i have gel do i have memory foam okay  

steve we could get medical grade foam it was and  then you get a wide one some some were sort of  

somewhat sort of pillow you know  normal pillow shape others were sort of  

looked like square up sort of rectangular blocks  i mean it's just too confusing it was for steve  

and i i love the moment where the man helping us  realized that we may have been wasting his time  

i i love the moment where he just suddenly lost  interest in us because it was about maybe 15  

minutes we were there looking at the pillows and  then eventually you could tell you could you could  

spot the moment where the man suddenly went hmm i  don't think these two are going to buy any pillows  

these these idiots are not going to buy pillows  from me what i found embarrassing was he he asked  

us to try out the pillows steve said they give  you the pillow steve had to lie down on the bed  

and then they say they get you to try it out  well i mean i've got had my coat on he's watching  

and you've got to lie on a bed and sort  of oh is that comfortable i'm not sure  

it's too much pressure i think he was hoping  that all this help he was giving us would  

pressure me into buying something i still  don't know why you put your legs in the air

anyway yes so i think i mean he said they didn't  really have any feather pillows did they i said  

have you got any feather pillows and he said  well he said people don't really buy feather  

pillows anymore that's not what's recommended  i don't believe it no i think that's rubbish  

people love feather pillows including me i love  i love resting my head on on a sack of feathers

sleeping without pillows you could do  that but i i think that might i'm not sure  

what's the worst where where is the  worst place that you've tried to sleep um

i don't i don't know where's the worst place  i've tried to sleep any bed that's not my own  

well some hotel beds because they're often the  pillows in hotels are often too soft so you need  

about six you put your head into them and there's  just nothing inside them i have slept literally  

on the ground at a railway station i won't  tell you why i did that but also and also at a  

at a airport as well an airport those horrible  seats that they give you to sit on when you're  

waiting for a plane and there was a delay to  my plane and i had to wait for about 10 hours  

so i had nothing to do at all so i i i all i  could do was lie down on this hard metal seat  

and it was the worst experience i've ever  had but i have also slept on the ground

they've got no feathers left we won't kill them  of course but they will be they will be naked  

we could just collect packaging that comes  with with all our orders that we get from uh  

um i know they used it they don't use foam anymore  do they use bits of paper anarchy says and we've  

noticed this this has been advertised a lot on  television pillows that you put between your legs  

yes there's a certain type of pillow that  is shaped to go between your legs i think  

it's supposed to make it more comfortable for  your hips or something when you're sleeping i  

don't like the sound of that the only thing  is surely when you move around it's going to  

pop out i can't see it staying in place  all night i imagine it also stinking  

after about a month it would just smell of of  urine it would smell of your taint and also farts  

i think you can probably wash them i don't  think i want anything put between my legs  

and left there so then if during the night if  you've got a hip problem then maybe you want a bit  

of support there to keep you know but yes they're  advertised a lot in the uk at the moment uh  

yeah tomeks mentioning it yet  again cbd is the perfect remedy for  

your excessive anxiety how do you know  i've got excessive anxiety that's a bit  

we do talk about it every week that might be the  reason why because we talk about it all the time  

and it is very sarcastically says you'll be able  to buy anything you need running shoes pillows  

without bothering us about it that's it that's it  look if you if it's bad where you are imagine what  

it's like where i am i have to live with all of  this i can't buy anything i i couldn't i couldn't

know that i have fallen asleep in a bath of water  i've actually had such a lovely bath that that i i  

you know what you do when you have a bath you  sink into the water until the water is just  

underneath your chin and then you slowly drift off  but you have to make sure you don't do a wee-wee  

don't do a wee-wee in a bathtub time it keeps  putting messages on and then retracting them

you've got to be a bit quicker  because we've already read them  

but never mind yes well olga makes a point here  about people who have young children babies that  

you get into the habit of being able to sleep  anywhere in any position because obviously  

with young babies you're getting up a lot in the  night to tend to them they might cry or whatever  

and so you get into the habit of being able  to just get your sleep wherever you can  

so maybe just sitting in the city hopefully  not driving um but yes i know people with young  

children you're not going to tend to a baby when  you're driving a car all right sleeping sleeping

i like modern pillows because  they can be washed in a washing

meth it's just a habit a regular habit of always  going to bed at the same time and having a routine  

before you do it and i've noticed because i have a  question questioned my mother she smokes a big fat  

one she's uh obviously you know she's always slept  well and what she does is and um she she will  

go downstairs she goes to bed at ten o'clock  every night okay approximately but at nine o'clock  

huffer's date she goes upstairs she cleans her  teeth uh gets into her nightgown and puts a  

dressing gown on and then comes back downstairs so  she doesn't go to then she says when i go to bed  

all i've got to do is take off my dressing gown  get into bed and i fall straight asleep so she's  

done all that preparation because i find if we've  been watching television and then you have to get  

ready for bed well you have to go upstairs you  have to get undressed and you have to clean your  

teeth go to the loo and by the time i've done all  that i'm wide awake yes so i think i think that is  

a good idea to always go to bed at the same time  and get up at the same time get ready like an hour  

before so that all you've got to do then is go  upstairs and get straight into bed obviously you  

you needn't bother cleaning your teeth some  people just go straight into bed anyway but  

the act of taking off clothes and all that is is  waking you up isn't it is it it's physical effort  

yes and then of course you shouldn't be on social  media you shouldn't be having the the blue lights  

of screens okay anywhere near you an hour before  you go to bed they don't recommend that's a good  

thing so you want to you don't want to be over  stimulating yourself before you go to bed you do  

not want to be stimulated before you go to bed  you don't want to be going upstairs and then  

thinking about see that's this is what i do i go  upstairs to get ready for bed and i start thinking  

about what i'm going to do tomorrow oh i'll call  that person oh yes i'll do that i'll do that and  

so your mind is suddenly and then when you go to  bed you're thinking about all the things you're  

going to do tomorrow and when you're going to  bed you should be thinking about nothing yes  

this conversation is making me want to sleep so  i think it's just the preparation for sleep is  

important i have this lovely image of your mother  floating around coming down the staircase in her  

nightgown like a like a spirit in the night  just in the in the dim moon light and there  

is your mother coming down the stairs and into the  living room and she's preparing for her night-time  

i don't know what to say at the end of  that sentence by the way we'll just end  

that sentence there but i just imagine  the neighbours might be able to see in  

and they can see your mother sort of walking  around the house in her night 90 just walking

for the day you can't be lying around in bed  watching videos videos yes or television having  

television in your room well mind you we don't  have that uh i think you would no i don't want

because even in the living room i don't want the  television on there's nothing on it's all rubbish

and then you think what would happen if i rested  my head on that maybe that's what we should do  

just we'll just get a cheap pillow case mr dunker  and then we'll get some hay from the local farmer

you know 100 years ago or something people always  had bed bugs we still do we still have them but  

you know you shouldn't have them really no but  some people have bed bugs i'm not sure what they  

are but they sort of bite you obviously they they  live in your bed and they feed from your dead skin

well our beds are full of full of uh full of not  bed bugs i think are something different i think  

they're bigger ones but the the just the mites  live in your pillows and in your sheets because  

dust mites because people are allergic to them uh  and they live off human skin so that there's about

is the the person who sprinkles sand into your  eyes because when you feel very nice when you  

feel tired what's the first thing you feel nice  it feels like you've got yes your eyes go dry and  

gritty it feels it feels like sand is in your eyes  they normally become a little painful so yes the  

sand man will sprinkle sand in your eyes and then  you'll close your eyes all right what about um

a short dose in the living room on the  sofa after the live stream yes very often  

after the live stream so i will watch columbo  and mr steve will fall asleep and then  

half an hour dozing yes he normally  has a little short sleep well palmyra  

20 hours on a bus going to uh czech republic in  austria well uh taking her small travel pillar we  

would we would call that a travel pillar is that  the thing that goes around your neck yes probably  

is it is it like a pillar that sort of comes round  your neck palmyra you will probably be dozing  

because you won't sleep prob properly on the bus  maybe so you'd probably say you'd be dozing off to  

sleep just sort of going in and out of sleep um 20  hours on the bus i know it's it's it's the same as  

when you're trying to when you're trying to fall  asleep on a plane oh i hate that especially when  

you know that you're going to be on the plane for  about 12 or 13 hours well i bought a travel pillow  

when we uh when i went on a long distance trip  uh probably to malaysia many many years ago  

and i unpacked it on the on the plane and you  had to blow it up it was one you blew up it was  

one of these inflatable inflate inflatable  pillows uh but it just absolutely stank of  

chemicals it was all this horrible plastic smell  anyway i fell asleep when i woke up i felt sick  

for like a day afterwards because i'm sure  i was breathing in all the fumes from this  

horrible plastic pillow um but anyway here's  another one go to bed you sleepy head yes  

like the title of today's live stream sleepyhead  sleepyhead if you're a sleepyhead it means you are  

often well it means you feel sleepy that's it you  are sleepy here's another one steve you might nap  

yes something i talked about last week  briefly during one of my week day live  

streams you have a nap a short sleep a relaxed  short rest so a nap you probably planned that  

as a doze you probably wouldn't plan a doze  it just happens you just sort of doze off  

to sleep your doze on there you are but if you  if you say you normally say you normally plan  

a nap which is a small period of sleep you say oh  i'm feeling tired i'm just going for a quick nap  

so that means you're probably going to have 20  minutes or half an hour on the bed you would  

normally go to bed for a nap wouldn't you that's  it or as a doze it's just something that happens  

and you've haven't planned it that's it you doze  off or you you doze for a short time you have a  

short informal sleep not planned play dead  is something else all together if you play  

dead that wouldn't be well it would simulate  sleep but you're actually pretending to be dead  

maybe if there's a mass shooting and lots of  bodies are lying around and you don't want to get  

shot so you just fall on the ground and pretend  to be dead you play dead that's not connected with  

sleep no well that's just your pretending to be  dead for a game or maybe you know as mr duncan has  

described absolutely because you don't want to get  shot no certain thing so you just pretend to be  

shot unless of course they come around for a  headshot afterwards which they tend to do but  

which case you're doomed you know they always do  don't forget that but we're coming out with some  

weird yes how many pillows should you have  says yes um yes if you suffer from uh reflux

oesophageal reflux so your your stomach acid  comes up at night they suggest you have maybe  

two pillows so that it stops it coming up here's  another one steve if you go to sleep very quickly  

if you go to sleep very quickly that's  a good one you go out like a light so  

imagine switching a light off you go out like a  light so instead of sort of tossing and turning  

uh which is what we used to describe a disturbed  night's sleep i tossed and turned all night  

which meant that you were restless you were you  were you were moving about and i tossed and turned  

all night i was like you had a disturbed night's  sleep it's moving around roads if you go out like  

a light you don't even remember going out you've  gone out you wake up the next morning i must have  

gone out like a light i don't remember a thing i  was not tossing last night i wasn't i wasn't going  

over all the the the things that people have said  to me that all that and all the revenge i want  

to get for people that have done me wrong in the  past and all the or all the horrible things that  

they've done to me i can't see because i'm going  over and over it and all the venge for like sorry

i do do that by the way that's  exactly going to i go into  

scenarios i need this cbt where can i get  somewhere can you do my deal atomic steve  

steve never goes out like a light never  he stays flickering for a long time like  

a candle 20 minutes half an hour and i know if 20  minutes have passed half an hour chances are i'm  

never going to get to sleep so i'll have to get  up and do something they say you should do that  

if you don't get to sleep within 20 minutes you  should get up do something otherwise you associate  

the bed with not going to sleep you're going to  associate it with getting to sleep anyway right ah  

slowly slowly blink actually i've read something  the other day that if if for example soldiers  

that are in battlefield conditions they need  obviously to have sleep because if you're tired  

you're not going to be performing very well on  the battlefield and there's a technique that they  

use that they lie out straight apparently don't  know how true this is but i read it i tried it  

it didn't work but i tried it anyway you put your  arms out by your side take a few deep breaths and  

then you say don't think don't think don't think  don't think for 10 seconds and apparently that  

shuts your brain off because then you're not  thinking about you know shooting somebody or  

seeing somebody being shy horrible things on  the battlefield that should be easy for you then  

what's that don't think don't think that's all  i ever do yeah the trouble is then you start  

thinking about don't think saying the word don't  think so you're thinking about saying don't think  

and uh you know it gets all very complicated  don't get shot don't get shocked don't get shot  

counting sheep of course people have mentioned  that but we're counting backwards i found that  

does work for me if you count backwards from 300  often you only get sort of maybe to 250 or 150  

and then you don't remember anything else the act  of the act of thinking about something like that  

is that's a very specific task and it did and it  will detract your mind away from maybe thinking  

about all the worries of the day or like what  might be coming or what's happened in the past  

yes okay so you think of one specific thing  like counting and that that occupies all  

your brains only doing that and that one task  and then you drop off to sleep doesn't always  

work listening to steve explaining that might help  you to go to sleep i'm going to try the cbt url  

cdb got to get the right one because if i ask  for the right the wrong one any particular brand  

that is good that anyone has found that works  well don't go onto the don't go onto the dark web  

you might end up with some people banging your  door and knocking it down a person might snore  

whilst asleep so quite often when we're asleep  we do things in the night that we're not aware of  

that is true quite a few things in  fact a person might snore whilst asleep

you won't sleep so i've read this you you start  with your feet sort of you might not sort of sort  

of tense the muscles a bit and then relax them  yes work your way up and then you are there any  

bits of you that are tense maybe your neck is  maybe you're frowning maybe you've got muscles  

in your face i get a tensed up okay steve you  just relax that's a that's very very vivid a very  

vivid way of expressing that we can express  the sound of snoring using the letter z that  

is very true that's it so if you are writing  down the sound of a person snoring guess what  

you can just put zed zed zed zed and  that is the sound of a person snoring

she hung upside down as well from from the ceiling  like a bat so yes i mean they say you're supposed  

to take eight hours sleep a night seven eight  hours but that's probably not true for everyone  

and i wouldn't imagine you know imagine sort  of primitive man living in a thousand years ago  

i mean were we always getting eight hours  solid sleep then i very much doubt it  

because i would imagine you would have i  would imagine you wouldn't do that because  

if you were living in a cave uh well i'm  just thinking back to what man used to do  

we had the comforts of modern living some people  still are uh because you would be afraid of  

you know wolves or something i don't know whether  we would have slept for eight solid hours you know  

a thousand years ago or ten thousand years ago i  don't know i don't know i don't think we'll ever  

know because i don't think anyone's recording i  know they didn't have alarm clocks definitely i  

think the sun the sun the sun would have been  the alarm clock you see back there exercise

but bye-bye or more a lot of people are going um  because they they have respected we've gone over  

yes i thought i thought you'd realize  no yes 10 minutes that's why people are  

leaving they're all they're all falling asleep  listening to us talking about falling asleep  

i think being relaxed is the key if you go  to bed and your mind is and you've allowed  

yourself to start thinking too much that  will have an impact on your ability to sleep  

valentin says you can have a big stone  instead of a door and you will be okay  

just like the flintstones because that's what  the flintstones have they have a big rock  

that they just push to open the door so maybe  that's what it was like maybe when the flintstones  

were actually real then that's it they used to  drive around in a car but but they didn't have an  

engine so instead they just put their feet through  the bottom of the car and ran along like that  

pushing pushing the car along and then maybe if  you wanted to have a shower in the morning steve  

you could get an elephant or a mammoth to put  its trunk through the window and then you just  

pull on the trunk and all the water comes out from  the the mammoth saliva maybe i tell you something  

dinosaur burgers imagine that imagine buying a  dinosaur burger it would be huge so you need a big  

fridge if you lived in prehistoric times which of  course we didn't because men mankind human beings  

were not around when dinosaurs were  around whatever the bible people tell you  

whatever those bible people tell you they didn't  and that film 10 000 years bc with rachel welsh  

and the flintstones yes the flintstones meet the  flintstones they're a modern stone age family  

vitas from the town of bedrock they'll go  what's that got to do with sleeping well  

because at the end they always go to bed and then  and then fred puts the the little animal outside  

the dinosaur and then the dinosaur jumps in the  window and then the dinosaur puts fred outside and  

then slams the door and then fred is left outside  all night banging on the door saying WILMA !

like that hilarious you had to be there i'm  going to crash says vitas i hope you're not  

driving oh yeah i presume you mean  crash that's another word of saying  

sleeping sleeping yes you can go to sleep i'm  going to crash out crash out for 10 minutes  

or half an hour i'm going to crash out mr steve  will be crashing out in a few moments i'm going  

to crash yes if you go to stay at somebody  else's house i'm going to i'm going to crash  

over at john's house it means it means  you're going to sleep there and it's just  

a temporary thing yes right if you live in  a dark cave you experience time differently  

um yes maybe yeah maybe uh right i'm going mr  duncan because on that fascinating note yes

uh well we've got some we've got some uh chocolate  brioches haven't we brioche with chocolate chips  

so i'm going to try one of those uh instead of a  tea cake because of course we don't know if our  

bakery is reopened yet because we didn't  go there yesterday we don't know yet um  

although if my mother's watching this  you'll know i lied to her last night  

anyway that's another thing that's it right uh see  you all next week do you know your son is a liar  

she knows that uh so she though i've called her  out on many years you're your mother yes has been  

near us a white lie yeah and not told us so well  i'm assuming that's what you're talking about  

no no anyway let's not get into that no now i  want to know what your mother has been lying about  

about people lie all the time don't they  to protect you i think people that love you  

they sometimes lie to you to protect you yeah  mentally i do that to you all the time trouble  

is you always catch me out do you mean do you  mean like saying that there is a santa claus

by the way there is a sound of santa  claus he is real and he comes down your  

chimney anyway at christmas are you ready to  fade me away professionally i will fade you away  

professionally by the way do you want your um your  chocolate brioches heated up with butter oh yes  

but put them in the microwave for a few seconds  is that what you're going to do i'm going to toast  

them toast them yes not too long though because  they're chocolate i'll just put them in for a  

small amount of time i don't think it's rain so i  think i'm going to be able to mow the grass yeah  

afterwards i'm sure you're pleased to hear that  yes fascinating mr steve is going to mow the grass  

he's going to cut the lawn this afternoon aren't  you glad that you tuned in all the way through  

here's another quick one a rough sleeper oh yes  a rough sleeper or somebody that sleeps rough  

yes if you that's just two different things  there if you are a rough sleeper it means you  

don't sleep very well but if you sleep rough  it means that you're like a [ __ ] sleeping on  

a park bench yes sleeping rough you're not in a  bed you're sort of in somewhere unfamiliar maybe  

on someone's floor or outside in on the grass  in a tent you would sleep rough wouldn't you  

yes yes sleeping rough not on a bed  uncomfortable yes it generally means  

you're sleeping in a place that is uncomfortable  like in the outdoors or maybe on a park bench  

mind your dogs always sleep rough don't they  rough a dog sleeps rough yes we get it steve  

that is very funny anyway lovely to see you  all well i can't see you i can i can read you  

lovely to be here i should say and uh see you  all hopefully the next week yes it was tata
