So I am feeling rather pleased with myself.

Sometimes it's good to feel a little bit of pride with something you've done,

even if it's something very small.

Here we are again on a very windy day.

It is miserable outside but felt fortunately in the studio.

Everything is rather than ice, to be honest.

from the birthplace of the English language, which just happens to be, oh, my goodness,

I don't think I will ever completely

understand life.

To be honest.

I often see life as a puzzle

that you will never, ever complete.

Maybe some of the pieces will fit.

Maybe some of them will be clear and obvious to you.

But I would say that's a lot of life is also quite unclear as well.

So I believe that life is fun.

We all have a good time.

Sometimes. Quite often we have a smile.

But of course sometimes there are reasons not to smile as well.

Everything in life comes at you sometimes

as a surprise, sometimes out of the blue.

If something comes out of the blue, it means it appears without you

having any warning, it comes suddenly.

Maybe a surprise or a shock, maybe something that you weren't expecting.

So that is life, really.

We don't know what's going to happen next.

Imagine if we did,

would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

Would it be good if you if you could actually foresee

the things that would happen to you, but then again, if you could,

maybe you would change those things, in which case

you wouldn't be able to foresee them.

It's a little bit of a paradox, really.

That's why when when anyone ever goes back in time, there is always some sort of paradox

because you can't change the past without altering the present.

That's one of the reasons why many people who write science fiction,

if they write stories about time travel,

there are many paradox cases, many things

that cannot be made sense of because they make no sense.

Time travel, certainly to the past, is one of those things.

It is a bit of a paradox, so I suppose it is a good thing

that we can't see what will happen next to us.

What a confusing world that would be.

Today we are looking at words and phrases connected

to clear and unclear

things that can be seen and things that are hard to see.

I suppose a good example would have been this morning outside my window.

Everything outside was quite unclear.

It was raining.

The visibility was very poor.

We couldn't see very far this morning.

Fortunately, now outside, you can see that everything is looking rather nice.

You might even notice a little bit of autumn.

Some autumn colours are now starting to appear

in the garden and also in the distance.

Let's have another view, shall we?

There is another one.

So you can see quite a contrast between the leaves on the trees.

Some of the trees in the garden, of course,

do not lose their leaves.

So now we are heading into autumn and you will notice

some of the trees in my garden

are not changing colour because they are evergreen.

They will stay around and look lovely

for the whole of the year.

But you will also notice that there are some leaves on the trees

that are changing colour and they are starting to

change their shade.

I think so.

Autumn has arrived.

I think it is easy to say and easy to see.

connected to something that I suppose

as we go through life, we often come across things

or we discover things that we we don't really understand.

Things can seem unclear,

maybe something you don't fully understand, maybe something

that you can't completely see.

It is un clear.

And of course we have the opposite.

We have the opposite word which is clear.

Something is clear.

So that's what we're doing today.

We are looking at words and phrases connected to clear

and unclear something,

as it appears, can be clear,

it can be visible, it can be seen

also.

It can be used as a verb as well.

If you are moving things around,

maybe you are moving things out of a certain place.

You clear something out.

So here we go.

The word clear relates to something visible

and understandable.

So if you understand something, it means in your mind it is clear.

Something clear is something you can see,

something you can understand easily.

So the most basic definitions of that particular word

relate to things that are clearly visible, things

you can clearly see something that is clear,

something that is understandable.

You understand that thing.

It goes into your brain clearly, and you have complete

understanding of that thing.

Maybe a certain subject

may be a difficult subject that you understand.

It is clear to you, maybe to other people it isn't,

but to you it is.

It is very clear.

A clear thing can be transparent or translucent.

I like those words.

They have very similar meanings.

It means that light can pass through, but also you can see through that thing as well.

I suppose a good example would be the bottle that I'm using today.

It is clear.

So this particular bottle is transparent.

You can see through it.

It is also translucent.

It is allowing light to pass through.

So that is the way of using the word clear.

We can also say that something is

in focus or sharp,

so if something is in focus,

it means you can see it very clearly.

It is something that is not

far away or may be something that is very visible.

It is clear it can be in focus and sharp,

something you can see very clearly.

An obvious idea or thought is clear.

So maybe something you already understand

that another person is talking about that subject

or that topic is clear to you because you already understand it.

An obvious idea or thought is clear.

It is something that a person has said that you fully understand.

And it might also be very obvious as well

that that is the meaning of what they are saying.

There is no misunderstand and think and let's be honest in life

quite often things can be misunderstood.

Maybe a person says something to you, or maybe you overhear

somebody talking about a certain thing

you might misunderstand.

But normally when we hear a person talking about something we are familiar with,

then that thing will be clear.

There is no misunderstanding

at all. Here we go.

So as an action to remove many things from

one place is clear.

So maybe you need to clear something out.

You need to make space.

Maybe you have a room that is full of junk.

We all have one.

Everyone has a room in their house that is full of junk.

We do.

We have.

We have a place in our house that's full of junk.

It's the attic above the house, in the roof space.

It is full of junk, rubbish.

A lot of things that probably we don't need one day.

We keep saying that we will go up to the attic

and we will clear the attic.

We will clear everything out.

We will try to sort out the things that we do need

with the things that we don't need.

An example here in a sentence, I need to clear the old furniture from the shed.

I need to clear the old furniture from the shed.

That means that you are going to remove those things.

You need to clear that space.

Maybe you have to put something else in there to replace it.

You have to take it out.

So in that situation, we are using it as a verb.

We are saying that we are doing that thing.

We are removing things from a certain space, perhaps in your computer as well.

Sometimes.

Sometimes you have to clear the memory in your computer.

If there there is too much information or data in your computer,

sometimes you have to clear the memory.

To clear out is to remove unwanted things.

So maybe you are going to throw things away.

Maybe there are things that you don't need any more,

things that you are going to throw out.

We often say that you clear out that space

or you clear out a certain type of thing.

Maybe there is lots of old furniture in a certain place

and you have to clear out that furniture.

It all needs to be removed.

Quite often in shops you might see a clear out sale.

Maybe there is lots of stock that they need to sell

because they need space in their stock room

and they will often have a clear-out sale.

Clear out everything must go.

Everything is half price.

Items that are unwanted are cleared away.

Something you don't need any more.

Something that you have but you never use.

You clear that thing out,

you clear it away.

Maybe there is a miss.

Maybe there is a lot of dirt on your floor.

Maybe you have to clear away all of the dirt

and the dust on your floor or on your furniture.

To clarify or explain

something is done to make that thing clear.

So sometimes you might hear something that you don't understand,

maybe something that is not clear to you.

You don't understand it.

To clarify or explain, something is done

to make that thing clear,

you might have to explain the way something is done.

You might have to explain something to another person.

And then the thing you are talking about will become clear.

They will

hopefully understand what you are saying.

An uninterrupted view is clear.

You might look out of your window in the morning

and there are no clouds in the sky and maybe the sun is out.

Isn't that lovely?

You might say that the weather is clear.

It is a clear day today because you can see for a long way

a distinct thing is clear.

It can be clearly seen and understood.

So something that is distinct

is something that you can see easily,

maybe something that you understand

very easily, or maybe something you see very clearly.

It is distinct, something that stands out from other things.

You can see it very clearly.

It can be clearly seen and understood.

To hear something perfectly is clear.

A thing is going into your ears

and it sounds clear.

You can hear that thing perfectly.

You are coming through as clear as a bell.

That is an expression.

We often use the English.

So in English we will often say that something is coming through as clear as a bell.

It means you can hear it perfectly.

It is coming through clearly

clear is obvious,

distinct, understandable,

clear, of course,

uninterrupted, complete and visible.

So a clear thing can be seen through

or it can be easily seen.

Or it is something that is easily

understood.

Then we have two interesting words that are connected to the word clear.

We have clarity, the presence of being clear,

something that you are expressing or something that you are saying

because you want to make something understood.

You want other people to understand.

So sometimes clarity

is the state of being clear.

You have clarity.

You can see things clearly,

and maybe you have to clarify something.

So that means you have to explain

to be understood or to make something clear.

So quite often you will have to clarify something,

maybe something that is very complicated,

and you will have to explain it in a simple way.

You need to clarify that thing.

You want to make it clear so it can be easily understood.

There is a subject that I don't know very well

the subject of black holes,

when everyone at the moment is talking about space again.

Because for many years we we sort of ignored space.

We didn't really talk about outer space for quite a while.

It came it became a bit dull, to be honest,

but now it's one of the hottest topics

exploring the universe, using high

powered telescopes to look not only into deep space

but also into the past as well.

And that is something that you can do if you can see

further enough away into the past.

You need also to be able to see at a great distance.

So the further away something is, the older it will be.

It's interesting that I always find that quite fascinating.

But yes, you are right. Black holes

are are things that people don't fully understand.

Even now we have our theories and there have been some

some possible sightings of black holes.

But there is still a lot we need to learn.

It is not easy to understand.

A thought or idea is hard to understand.

So that is how we express the feeling of not understanding something.

Maybe a thought or an idea,

maybe something a person is talking about

and it is hard to understand.

It is not clear.

You can say that it is unclear.

It can't be understood and it can't be seen.

Something that is hard to say.

Always obscured is unclear.

So if you obscure something

it means you are covering or hiding something.

So maybe you might say, Mr.

Duncan, we can't see your face because it is

unclear.

It is not clear

to see.

It is not visible,

it is obscured by your hands.

So to cover something

and to make something unclear is to cover it.

Maybe if you are looking out of your window and there is a lot of mist or fog,

you might say that you can't see the view.

There is no view because there is a lot of mist

or maybe it is raining like it was here this morning.

It was raining a lot this morning.

These photographs are all out of focus.

Interesting. I like that phrase.

So if something is out of focus,

if something is unclear and you can't see, it

clearly you might say that it is out of focus.

It is there in front of you,

but you don't know exactly what it is.

It is not clear to your eyes.

Everything is just a blur without my glasses.

So if I take my glasses off, I won't be able to see anything.

Everything will be unclear.

It will all be blurred.

To blur something is to make

something appear unclear.

So everything is just a blur without my glasses.

If I can't see what I'm doing,

if I can't see what I'm looking at,

we can say that everything around me is unclear.

It's all out of focus.

An unknown result or outcome is unclear.

And this goes back to what I was talking about at the start of today's livestream.

Even if we don't know what is going to happen next,

and most of us don't,

especially when we're talking about life,

an unknown result or outcome is unclear.

You don't know what will happen next.

In a sentence, we can say

that it is unclear how the patient will react to the medicine.

We don't know.

We will have to try

and treat the patient.

We will give them the medicine.

But we don't quite know.

We don't understand or we are unsure about the result.

We don't know what will happen.

It is unclear how the patient will react to the medicine.

We do not know what will happen next.

It is unclear.

To be unclear is undefined

blurred out of focus

and intelligible obscured

hidden from view.

Something that is not clear is something you can't see

and something that is very hard to understand.

Some people do believe that

intellect or being intelligent

is something that might be hereditary,

that there does seem to be a certain instance where people do seem

within certain families

or a genetic line.

People do seem to have more intelligence.

To be honest with you.

I think your environment also has a role to play as well.

So I don't think it is just about your your family.

If you have a clever family, it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be clever.

I think there are many things that happen in your life that might also affect

the way you learn and the way you understand the world around you.
