I can't begin to tell you how hot it is at the moment in the studio.

Well, I can tell you it's around 31 degrees in here.

Outside.

It is a little cooler, but we are having a very hot day.

I have a feeling quite a few of you

might be having a hot day right now.

Because I'm not too bad.

Although I will say straight away.

I've had a busy week.

It's been busy.

We've had a very busy week. Myself and Mr.

Steve, we've been travelling again.

Oh, Mr.

Duncan, you seem to like getting out and about at the moment.

Well, I suppose that's one of the reasons why Summer is such a wonderful season,

because it gives us all the chance

to go out and drive around,

maybe visit a nice scenic place.

Scenic a place that is nice to visit.

Maybe you have some lovely views, maybe

the surroundings are beautiful.

We can describe it as scenic.

A scenic view, A scenic picnic,

maybe you are going somewhere that's rather nice.

So we are back together again on a very hot.

I suppose the word I would use

to describe today is muggy.

Oh, Mr.

Duncan, that's a very interesting word.

Muggy.

If the weather is muggy, it means it is humid.

And I think at the moment, the humidity here in England is around 60%.

So if you go outside, it

really does feel as if you are in a tropical country somewhere.

It really does feel as if you are

in the tropics.

Anyway, enough of that.

We have more important things to talk about because we are back once again

with another English live stream.

And yes, you might say that we have made it

all the way

to the end of another weekend.

Today we are looking at words and phrases connected to the sea

and the ocean because, of course, we went down to Bristol

last week to meet Beatriz.

So I thought it would be fun to do that.

Also, we are talking about something that happens in life,

especially if you are a parent.

Are there any parents watching at the moment?

Are you a parent?

Do you have children?

Maybe your children are still growing up.

Maybe they are still young.

Maybe they've just started school.

One of the most interesting things

I find, especially when I look back in my own life,

are all the experiences I had

when I started school and when I started socialising as a child.

We all have to learn those lessons in life.

Some of those lessons are not easy.

Some of the things we have to find out about

life are not acceptable.

Maybe sometimes we have to suffer slightly as well.

So when you are young, some parents

like to discipline that children.

They like to make sure that their child is prepared

for the real world.

And when I say the real world, I mean reality.

It is probably a good idea

to make sure that your children know that as life goes on,

they might have problems, difficulties, things might go wrong.

Life is not always fair.

So I think sometimes

parents often resort or use

something called tough love.

Have you heard of that expression?

Tough love.

So when we say tough love, we are actually saying

rules or discipline or maybe punishment

that we give out or we administer.

So if you administer something,

it means you give out that thing, you give it to someone.

So quite often tough love is

something parents will give to their children,

so they will be prepared

for the difficulties that life has for them.

And I think it's true. I think it's very true.

Palmeiras says we are hot today.

Yes, I think everyone is.

I have a feeling maybe later today we might have a thunderstorm

or maybe some sort of

storm of some sort.

Maybe wind, rain, thunder, lightning.

As long as it doesn't happen during my live stream.

Because the problem is living around here,

we often lose our electricity.

So if there is a storm or maybe if there is lightning,

sometimes we do lose our electricity here, which is not good.

When you think about it, it isn't a good thing, to be honest with you.

Bristol.

It was another place that we went to last week.

This is a place called Shrewsbury.

is, we hardly ever go there.

even though he doesn't live very far away from it.

Steve outside a very well known burger chain.

So that fast food restaurant has been around for many years.

But the sad thing is, it is very sad.

There aren't many of them left.

So I remember as a child going to this particular chain

of fast food restaurants.

And then you can see Mr. Steve.

Steve has in his back. I wonder

we might tell you that later on.

we were in Paris.

We had a super time.

It was something that happened a couple of weeks ago and we had the most amazing time.

I don't normally talk about our personal lives

because I'm sure you're not interested at all in what we're up to.

But this is a sad week for me.

Because next week Mr.

Steve is going back to work.

So another week from now.

So next weekend will be the last weekend that Mr.

Steve will be a free man because he has decided and I don't know why.

Maybe he's a maybe Mr.

Steve's a bit crazy and I don't know.

He's gone loco, perhaps, but Steve has decided to go back to work,

so he's starting a new job in a roundabout a week from now.

In fact, it will be a week tomorrow.

He will be starting back to work.

Not only that, he's going to be away as well for some of that time, so I'm going to be

on my own.

But also Mr.

Steve will be busy again with his new job.

And I have to say

I'm not really looking forward to it.

It's going to be very strange because to be honest, I've had Steve with me

since 2020 when coronavirus and when the lockdown started.

So Steve was always working here and then he retired

and now he decides to go back to work.

Some people think he's gone crazy, personal.

Lee From my own point of view, it is Mr.

Steve's choice. It is his life.

So I've said that I'm happy whatever

he wants to do, it's his choice

and I will always support him whatever he decides to do.

But he's gone back to work.

He will be anyway.

So he's got another job and he's going back to work

in a few days time.

I will spend more time again on my own and I'm not looking forward to it.

Sometimes I don't want to think about what people might be doing.

some people might be watching us whilst they're on the toilet, probably because maybe,

maybe the sound of our voice over our faces

will help them to to move things along.

Well, in 2 hours you probably need to go to the toilet at some point and you could have

the ear plugs, headphones to listen to us.

So going back to what people do when they're watching us, Claudia is baking a cake.

Oh, a chocolate cake, I believe.

I believe she said yes.

Her nephew is coming back after two years away.

Well, I'm jealous that they're going to he or he's going to get this lovely cake

and that we can't have a peace because your cooking is legendary,

is it not, as his topics, for that matter.

Talking of food now, we had a little trip during the week.

We went to see one of our lovely students and in a moment it was that Mr.

Duncan can I just go and see? I don't remember.

Okay, I'm joking, I'm joking.

I'll just do that when I get to the end of the sentence.

Because now I can't remember where I was

during the week.

We went to see one of our lovely viewers

on Friday

and I also did some videoing.

So I took some images, some moving images.

That's what we called them in the business.

You see, we call the moving images, but maybe in the 1920s. Yes.

Well, that was that was what I was going with, you see.

And we decided to do some filming whilst we were there.

And also we were spending time with Beatrice as well.

We had the most amazing time on Friday.

And I think I would say that that was probably the best exhibition

I've ever seen of anything ever

in my life.

It was very good. Mr.

Duncan I was very impressed with the attention to detail of this, the first ever

screw propeller ship to cross the Atlantic. Yes.

And also the longest.

Yes, the longest ship ever built at that time.

Exactly. It was made of iron as well.

Rusted away, of course.

And what was incredible was Mr.

Duncan. Obviously,

Beatrice is from Argentina.

She's have to go now because as a friend come round.

But I think she's seen the video,

That particular boat that was built in Bristol

SS Great Britain ended up after a million miles

of sailing around the globe,

ended up in what

we call the Falkland Islands or the Malvinas.

That's where it ended up scuttled in a bay scuttle.

That means it's been it's sunk and then it was eventually brought back to the to the UK.

Was it 1970 something? I think it was in the 1970s.

It was brought back to be restored because it's of its historical value.

They've never had a screw propeller before on a boat like that.

So it was incredible.

Anyway, it was fascinating, but to be honest with you, the work they did on

that ship was amazing because when it was brought back, there was very little left of it.

There was only really the main part of the hull

and parts of the upper deck.

Most of it was was destroyed or even missing,

or there were parts of the ship just lying around.

So they did bring everything back.

But I have to say, everything in there,

there is a there is the most amazing exhibition that you can walk around

and then you go onto the ship itself and you can walk around.

So in that video what you saw that was actually on the ship,

we were actually walking around inside the ship and everything was recreated

very realistically in some cases

almost too realistically,

because there was a place, a part of the ship

where where the the crew would go for their their puppies

and they had gone.

But this is amazing.

Steve Always with the poop. Yeah.

They had gone to the trouble.

They had actually recreated the smell

of an old toilet on board a seafaring ship.

I think that's amazing.

So that's what you call having attention to detail everything.

So if you ever get a chance to go to Bristol, visit

the SS Great Britain, it is the most amazing exhibition.

And as I said, I think it's probably the best exhibition I've ever seen.

Christina wants to go

and she's saying, We must have the next meet of the Mr.

Duncan's English lesson group

in England.

We did discuss this actually, when we were in Paris. Yes.

And it will happen.

And we can all go onto the SS Great Britain.

It's a long way for us to drive.

It took us 2 hours to get there and 2 hours to get back.

That's still not is worth it.

It's still not as far as other people will have to come.

Some people and some people will have to come from the other side of the world.

They will indeed, yes.

But it

was a great day out and it was nice to see Beatrice again.

And hopefully we will see Beatrice and everybody else

once again and new people when we have another.

We should make this an annual event.

And we go to a different country, Steve, let's not commit ourselves to anything.

I'm not saying, you know, not not in June.

It might not be June, it might be July, it might be February.

Anyway, Steve, we were talking about

going on the sea, I suppose I

it would be a good idea to have some interesting sea and ocean words and phrases because of that.

Because now I'm feeling as if I want to go out

and explore and navigate with my long telescope.

How about if you got your sextant, Mrs. Duncan?

Mr. Steve always has a very tight

hold on his sextant, don't you?

Yes, I'm well, sextant and up,

as they say, never sextant.

In fact, Lewis said that on a message on a group message the other day.

My father was

a sailor, Mr. Lincoln.

Oh, he was in the merchant Navy as a navigator.

And I've got his sextant

that he had from

when he was very young, 16, something like that.

So it's very old

and, you know, I'm proud to have that. Yes.

And he was he was a master mariner,

which is a captain, basically.

But he was going to be a captain.

And he was taking he took all his exams.

And then I was born.

So Steve came along and spoilt everything.

So my father decided to leave the sea, which was the love of his life.

And he regretted it ever since. Yes.

Anyway, now we have some sea

and ocean words and phrases and there is no water falling from the sky.

The rain is coming down very heavily.

So if we suddenly disappear, by the way, it might mean

that we've had a power cut, the electricity might go off.

So don't be too surprised if we suddenly disappear.

Yes, but I would just saying show the camera

so that people can see what the weather is like

is what I'm saying.

As the weather

maybe go.

Yes, it's stormy.

Anyway, that was I again,

Words and phrases for sea and ocean.

Some very quick ones.

And I know someone is going to say, Mr.

Duncan, you talked about this a few weeks ago.

Well, here are some extra ones that I didn't mention at the time,

so I'm going to show them right now some sea and ocean words and phrases.

Here's a good one.

If something is

a drop in the ocean,

we can say that that is a small amount.

Quite often when we are talking about how much money we spent on something

or how much we spent on a certain thing,

how much money we spent in our budget,

if it's only a very small amount, we can say that it is just

a drop in the ocean.

It's a great one.

So any any any ways of using that.

Thanks for putting me on the spot. Mr. Duncan.

No, I'm just saying you if you were if somebody asked you, somebody say, for example,

who was going to buy a house or going to buy a car, let's say somebody wanted to buy a car

and they said, Can you help me out with a small amount of money?

And you said, here's £5

and obviously the car's probably going to cost 30,000.

You would say, Thank you very much.

But that's just a drop in the ocean compared to what I need. Yes,

it would be one way of using that phrase.

That's it.

So maybe in a company, if you have to spend some money on a certain project or something you have to do,

maybe you have a budget, but the budget might be £10,000.

But of course the company has lots of money, so they might be concerned

or some people might be worried that the company is spending £10,000.

But you might say, don't worry, it's just a drop in the ocean.

It's only a small amount of money.

A small quantity, yes.

So if you were a very wealthy person

and like what?

Like we're not and you wanted to go first class in a plane

costing you £3,000, somebody might say, oh, what a huge amount of money.

You might reply, Well, that's a drop in the ocean compared to what I've got in my bank.

Obviously, you would be accused of being a horrible show off.

Yes, but yes, your example was very good, Mr.

Duncan.

You want to spend money on a project or on some research and somebody says that's a lot of money.

And you say that's a drop in the ocean, really, compared to what we might get back. Yes.

At the end of the project, if it was to work, if we were to develop this new project, project,

the, you know,

million pounds that we would spend in developing this new money could be said to be a drop in the ocean

compared to the return that you would get from selling that product or service. Yes.

So quite often you have to put money in to get money out.

That is the basics, I suppose, of business, of having a business

you have to invest to reap, I suppose.

Here's another one.

Set sail.

If you set sail, it means you, you head off,

you begin a journey,

you set sail and you can use this figuratively as well.

Yes, you can.

That's how it's often used, isn't it?

Obviously, if you are on a boat or on a ship,

you would start your journey and say, Well, come on, let's set sail.

Meaning that you are going to put the sails.

Of course, in

most boats these days there aren't any sails at all.

It's just an engine that you might still say, Let's set sail.

Or you might say you go off on a journey somewhere.

It could be in the car. You might say, Let's set sail.

I mean, you're in a car, but you might just say that anyway because it's figurative.

You're saying that the journey is beginning

with the weather is very bad.

By the way, Christine, this is a drop in the ocean is the same in the Italian phrase.

Yes, I would imagine it's used in many languages.

That's one of the things I always find interesting about idioms and expressions is quite often

they are used exactly the same in other languages.

Or maybe there is a slight variation, but the meaning is still the same.

So So you head off, you set sail, you might say that

when we start the live stream at 2 p.m.

every Sunday, I could say it's time to set sail

with today's live stream. Yes.

Talking of idioms, I made my sister laugh the other day.

Mr. Duncan Mm hmm.

Because we use idioms a lot

when we're teaching or when you're teaching.

And I was talking about we were trying to

my sister and I are trying to sell my mother's house.

Okay. Okay.

And of course, it's a very difficult time

to sell anything at the moment because of interest rates.

And I just cut a long story short,

somebody has made an offer, but it's a low offer.

Okay. Okay.

Lower than we would like.

So I said, but nobody else has.

And my sister said, Well, shall we wait to see if anybody else makes an offer?

And I said, Well, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

And my sister burst out laughing because she said, I haven't heard

that phrase, that idiom for many, many years.

And she thought I sounded very old fashioned by saying it,

because it means if you've got something, it's better, isn't it?

It's better to hold onto that thing you have than to try to get something that you haven't got. Yes.

So you hold onto the thing.

The one bird you have in your hand

is more than those two in the books because you haven't actually got them. Yes.

But you might try to catch them and then lose the one bird that you had.

Exactly. Exactly. That's what it's all about.

So anyway, she laughed, which just goes to prove that

we do often talk about idioms, but they're not.

No, no, no, no, not as much.

I think I will not accept that.

I'm not going to accept any of what you just said. Well,

Steve, Steve,

they all still used idioms and expressions are still used

in general day to day conversation.

Now, you don't hear everyone in the on the planet.

Know I'm just saying it made my sister laugh.

Yeah, she might have sat for a long time, but.

But you said that the people that use idioms, but they do all the time.

All this. Absolutely. All the time.

So everybody uses them in every sentence all the time.

Well, that's just.

Well, now you're just being churlish. Yeah, exactly.

Yes, but don't.

Well, people like it when we argue on the live stream.

But of course, figuratively, as you said, we can use it also when we want to say

that we are not going to stop with our plans

Maybe if you are setting up a business, you are ready to go full steam ahead,

even though there could be potential difficulty is

that could give you reasons to stop doing something.

Maybe, maybe, maybe somebody says, well,

don't set up a business now, not within inflation, in the economy as it is,

and you've got no means to get out of it because obviously if you had a

half, you had a paddle and you really were a creek.

It's a narrow waterway normally found sort of

in in mountainous areas or jungle areas.

And obviously, if you get stuck in that

and you haven't got a paddle, you can't get yourself out.

But if you are metaphorically up the creek without a paddle, it means you got yourself

into a very difficult situation like the government have with inflation

and having to raise interest rates are up the creek without a paddle because

by increasing interest rates

to try and combat inflation, it could you know, it's

a very difficult situation to be in because then everybody's

expenses go up and then the economy crashes, which isn't what they want.

So, yeah, that's a very good phrase to use for the government at the present time.

Yes, a lot of us feel as if we've been left up the creek, haven't got the means

to get out of this difficult situation that you've got yourself into is another one.

The tide is turning.

Oh, so we had the tide a few moments ago against the tide,

but now the tide is turning.

Maybe a change is approaching.

Things that were done in a certain way in the past

are now going to be done in a different way.

Maybe changes are coming.

The tide is turning quite often we use this

when something bad becomes good.

I literally Mr.

Duncan literally saw this phrase used in a news article today.

They said the headline was The tide is turning on Wokeism.

Yeah, you see.

So these idioms are used.

They are the tide is turning on Wokeism

So what they're saying is that

it's Wokeism has been going all one way for a long time

and suddenly people now are reacting against it and it's going to come back.

One of the ways to pull back.

So what is Wokeism Wokeism is that,

yes, it's a situation where everyone's being very, very careful

about what they say to people, how they address people.

You might call it an extreme form of political correctness.

Yes, political correctness.

It's all to do with using pronouns.

And and I'm being very careful. Right.

You know, what you say to people of different colour and things like that.

Anything is perceived as being as being

almost something that can make somebody angry.

Yeah, I think I think woke being woke means

that you're going to deep into all of these things

and so you are trying not to offend anyone.

But when you try to do that, well, you can't do it.

It's very hard not to offend at some point today.

I think today, maybe at some point

today we have offended someone, but it wasn't our intention.

We didn't mean to offend you.

So that said, you see so that was a good so that just shows

that certain expressions are actually used.

So the tide is changing.

The tide is turning can use that in political ways as it's often

used to denote a change in in the way politics is moving.

So you could have had a right wing government for a long time

and they haven't done very well.

And everybody's suddenly complaining.

And somebody might write an article saying the tide is turning on right wing politics or something

like that, and the implication being that things are going

to become more centre ground or left wing. Yes.

So any any change of direction.

And quite often it it is used figuratively

and also positively as well. And

he is.

Here's a good one.

Steve, a final one. Oh,

everything is shipshape

and Bristol fashion is a great thing.

So this is used quite often when we are talking about things that are

that are prepared or they are ready to be used or something is ready to go,

we can say that they are shipshape and Bristol fashion

and of course this refers to the shipping of,

well a time long

since gone, but that's what they used to say.

So Bristol fashion refers to the ships in Bristol

being ready to set sail so everything is shipshape and Bristol fashion

you've got the rigging correctly set, you've got all your supplies.

Everything is ready for you to set sail literally.

And garage is there is this ship

ready to sail?

Has it got everything that it needs?

And of course, that doesn't necessarily just apply to a ship.

We're saying using metaphorically, it means that everything is correct and satisfactory.

You're ready to go.

Is this business shipshape?

And Bristol Fashion?

In other words, have you got all the right people employed in it?

You can, of course, just shorten that to shipshape.

Yes, you can leave you can leave out the Bristol Fashion bit

and just say, I don't think this company is shipshape.

And if you say that, you're saying you don't think that you've got the right people employed,

you know, the right investment in the right places,

nothing seems to be going right

because things need to be changed. No.

Mm. Everything is shipshape.

And the Bristol Kristina says, I think the tide would be turning for me.

Yes, that's it.

So you hope that something good is coming for you in the future

and that that's a correct use of the phrase.

I hope the tide will turn because often things might go badly for you, for

we always we all go through periods of life when things don't go well,

You might lose your job and then somebody you love might die

and then you might be involved in a car accident.

You might hurt yourself.

You want them to learn lessons in life to make mention.

then maybe you should go and get a job

delivering newspapers or something like that

so that you appreciate the value of money, because if I just buy that for you, so.

So a child, a new bike screams.

why I want a new bike.

Give me a new bike.

And what you could cause could easily give in as a parent.

And so there you are.

But at a certain age when they could work, you could say to them, Well,

now I'm not going to buy you that bike.

If you really want that bike, then

I'll help you to get a job locally to deliver papers or pick fruit.

And then you're not telling necessarily why,

but then the lesson is learnt because they then appreciate the value of money. Yes.

And they associate hard work with

getting something as opposed to it coming easily.

So these lessons, these lessons that are taught by parents are what you might call life

lessons or ways of getting that child

accustomed to the reality of life.

So tough love is a harsh lesson given with care.

You might you might scold someone.

So to scold is to punish you.

Punish child.

You give them tough love.

Yes. It's not abuse.

No, it's the opposite of abuse. Not abuse.

So tough love is not abuse.

I mean, it could

know it's not abuse,

but if you were to take it too far, if you just put,

you know, lock your child in a room every time they did something wrong for a week

or you beat them, then you that would be abuse.

But it's it's a life lesson that you're giving, like

the example that I gave the child.

You know, one of your children wants a new bike

or a new laptop or a new phone. Yes.

And they're 14 and they could just sit at home on the Internet all day and do nothing.

And you said, well, if you want that, I'm not going to keep buying you things all the time.

Go out and get a job. Yes.

And you could help them to get that job and help them show them

how what they do is not just go out and get a job.

You would actually physically then show them or take them to places

and help them to learn these lessons in life.

So tough love is something that parents often

and I suppose in the past you might say that in the past

parents were much tougher

or more strict than my parents because we've talked to our yours.

My parents were quite strict in certain ways,

certain ways of behaviour, but also I suppose

my life lessons were learned just through the way

my family had to struggle to get by because my family, they weren't

they weren't

rolling in money as many people think, but it wasn't like that.

So I suppose observing my own parents

struggle was a kind of life lesson.

I wouldn't describe it as tough love because they didn't have any choice.

They weren't trying to teach a lesson, but just from their own experiences

of trying to manage.

You can say that that was a form of life lesson, I suppose.

Yes. Letting people find out how to do things

without you helping them all the time and doesn't have to be children.

Of course it can be.

You can be the same thing can be in

relationships as well, you know, with adults.

But it just means that you are

you're not helping somebody,

you know, giving your advice or, you know, giving something.

You're you're forcing somebody

to find out how to do it themselves. Yes.

And then they learn how to do something. Yes.

I always say that the most valuable lessons in life quite often are the toughest,

the ones that cause the most pain.

I suppose so, yes.

So, for example, you might be somebody that

likes to or,

you know, a friend, for example, you're a group of friends and.

One of you

is always is going out with some horrible person that is

is using them for their money or something like that.

And you you tell them,

you know,

that person's a bad person, but they don't listen to you.

So the love there would be

you just have to let them find out on their own.

Or maybe they've done it once and then they do it again.

And so you don't

help them.

You don't go up to that other.

They have to sometimes people have to learn lessons

that by themselves, otherwise they don't actually learn.

Yes. Well, if a person is older, then then you don't you don't do it.

You don't give them tough love because they should know by then.

So that's that's why it's always useful to

to get young people to

to experience some of the hardships.

I think that is one of the big criticisms nowadays of younger generations.

It seems like they just want everything to be easy.

I want to have a nice job.

I want to be an Internet star.

I want to have lots of money.

I want to do all these things.

But then when real life comes along and says,

You can't have those

things, I'm afraid you have to work for them.

They might feel as if somehow they they are offended by it

because why can't I have all these things So?

A parent might sometimes say He has to learn some time.

He has to learn some time the hard way.

Quite often the hard way or she has to realise life is not easy.

You might often hear parents say this to each other.

Yes, it's like, you know, it's not like if there's a flame burning.

Yeah.

I mean, you wouldn't take it to Extreme and say the gas was on on the stove

and your wanted to put you was going to put this hand on the stove

or on the boiling water, you wouldn't say, oh well no, he has to learn tough love.

Well let him burn his hands and yet learn the hard way.

Work for me.

You wouldn't do that.

You wouldn't go to that extreme. No,

but the life lessons, from my point of view,

life lessons are things that you are going to experience as you get older.

And having those experiences when you are younger

will allow you to accept the reality

that life sometimes is really unfair.

And I think young people need to to know that before

they they wander off into the real world.

Not that we know anything about parenting, but they barely receive otherwise invited.

Having experience in your life is very good for you, no matter what age you are.

was completely different to my parents.

I mean, I had an easy upbringing, really.

When I think back, you know, my father had a good job.

We lived a fairly comfortable life,

I would say certainly above average for the 1970s.

And, you know, I pretty much everything I wanted,

although I was

that was instilled in me

that if you want something in life, you need to for it.

Yeah, education.

And I've never forgotten that.

And it's just why we have to do lists.

Yes, I always like to do things.

I suppose laziness is something that we all suffer from.

And if you are, if you are young,

you might find that if you allow your child

or young person to be lazy and have everything done for them,

they might expect everything in their life

to come as easily as that.

So it can be be useful.

But of course some parents have.

I think some children are just evil.

Okay.

I think sometimes a parent can do everything it can,

but the child just has a certain character that

you can't work with.

Christine is pointing this out.

The character of the person is important.

And however a child is born, pretty much their character

is is something that you can't really change.

You sort of you're born with it with a particular nature, aren't you?

That's true.

And you always hear of parents where, you know,

the children are unruly and behaved, badly behaved.

But it's not necessarily

people tend to blame the parents, but it's not necessarily the parents don't know.

That is true because sometimes you just get a bad child. Yes.

And no matter what you do, that child always is going to be bad.

I mean,

yeah.

Anyway, we won't go.

Well, that leads us on to our phrase here, you say so this is a very useful phrase.

Again, one that may sound old fashioned, but I think is still relevant.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

So if you don't punish your child ever,

you give them complete freedom, Do whatever they want.

You end up with. Well, what you just said.

So that you're saying, though, if you don't hate your child.

Well, in that in that sense.

But I think these days it's more figuratively they've become spoilt.

Yeah.

You can't hate your children now.

Yes, you can be sent to prison for that.

So. So yes, originally you would beat your child to get them to behave.

But this is kind of figurative.

So it's not saying you should really be your child.

It's saying if you don't punish your child

or give them some sort of life lesson,

then that child will go through life completely entitled.

They will feel as if the world has to give them everything is spoilt.

There's nothing worse than a spoilt child.

This is we screaming for attention and wanting something.

I always remember that when we went to Turkey, we went to Turkey.

The first time we went to Turkey there was well, the place we were at

there was supposed to be no children staying there

because that's one of the reasons why we went, because it said no children.

And when we arrived there was this family and they had this

really annoying, spoilt little brat.

She was she was a brat I'm sorry,

and she was making so much noise and getting so much attention from everyone

and she knew what she was doing and she was so annoying

and we were slightly annoyed because the holiday was

it was sold to us as

child free, no children, no screaming kids anyway.

And when we got there, we had the most the world's most precocious,

spoilt kid ever see.

I when, when, when we grew up

we were always when we were in public,

when we went out with my parents anyway, we were always very quiet.

There was a phrase that was always used when my mother grew up.

Children should be seen and not heard and that was a very common phrase

that people used in the I don't know when it started,

but certainly there was using it in the 1940s still,

children should be seen and not heard,

but now children are seen and heard.

Yes, but when you know, we would never when I was growing up,

if we went out to somebody else's

house, we were in public on a bus.

I don't imagine your family ever used the bus.

Well, if we were if we were, you know, in a public place,

in a restaurant or something like that, we wouldn't be screaming, shouting.

Sometimes you go out for a meal, don't you, in there?

And parents have got children and the children are running around and screaming

and they're encouraging them.

That would be you know, that's very bad behaviour to encourage from a child.

So that's not just about child. You've got bad parents.

But some parents think that's how you know, no, let my children do what they want.

They just expressing themselves.

But, you know, it's very disrespectful to to other people.

If you're paying to go out for a meal somewhere,

you don't want to be disturbed by children or even other adults

because some people some of the adults get.

Anyway, let's not go into that. It's true, though.

Sometimes adults can behave just like spoilt children. Yes.

So finally we have this last

phrase and yes, can I quickly say something?

You see, when we were growing up, if the teacher,

if you were bad at school, did something wrong,

you would get a phone call.

Your parents would get a phone call from the school to say

Your parents would certainly punish you.

But now that doesn't happen.

It's the other way round.

schoolteacher scolds

the child or tries to stop that, if the child is badly behaved

and is shouted at by the teacher

shouting at the teacher, yeah, how dare you talk to my child like that?

That's how things have changed, I think.

I think the move, what has happened over the years, the move has gone from the parents being responsible
