We are very close to a very well-known landmark here in Much Wenlock called Windmill Hill.

So that gives an indication or a suggestion that there could be a hill with a windmill on it.

Well, what what we do have is not quite a windmill.

I will I will briefly show the windmill.

I have to be careful because I don't want to lose the signal.

But there it is, over there.

So the windmill is is over there.

Although the windmill has not

worked for around 200 years,

so it hasn't worked for a very long time.

In case anyone is wondering if the windmill still works, I can tell you now it does not.

It certainly would have been a good place to have a windmill, because it's on top of a hill

and as you can see, it doesn't have the veins. No.

The sails.

The sails are no longer there, which is why it doesn't function anymore.

In fact, that is the second.

I didn't know this.

That is actually the second windmill to be built there.

There was one there before, so this one was built about 400 years ago,

a very long time ago, and no one knows what it did.

They just know that it's very old, and they know that it might be around

three, 400 years old, but no one really knows what it did.

So some people believe that maybe it was grinding grain

wheat, wheat, wheat or some sort of grain, but they don't really know.

I know one thing they did.

They would have had to have carried heavy sacks of grain all the way up the hill.

they would have had horses though.

That's true.

You are right, Mr. Duncan. They would have had horses.

Yes I know.

I didn't think they would carry it on their own.

I think they would have some sort of horse or maybe donkeys.

There used to be lots of donkeys in this area.

So around Much Wenlock.

I don't know why, but I think they used to be used on the quarries.

So there were lots of quarries around here.

And in fact, there's one just behind us which is now full of water

that lots of people like to go swimming in at this time of year.

But what I was going to say is this area used to have lots of donkeys,

and this area was was known for its wild donkeys.

Can you believe that?

Yes, and very possibly near an area near here, near where we live, used to be called Donkey Town.

Yes, because all the donkeys were kept there.

Isn't that weird?

So? So there you go.

A little bit more history of this area.

If you can see that fence behind us. There.

just the other side of that fence is a disused quarry

where they used to get stone to build the local buildings.

But as Mr.

Duncan said, it's now full with water.

They call it the Blue Lagoon. Yes, because it is blue.

And, local teenagers like to flock here in their cars to swim in it.

But it's been bought by somebody now, and they have managed to try

and do their best to stop people going in there because it's now private property.

Well, I think the thing is it's dangerous.

It's dangerous to swim in a, in a disused quarry because you don't know what's under the water.

And around the country, there are many of these disused quarries around.

And many people have died.

They've died. They've drowned.

And whilst swimming in the disused quarries.

So? So it is.

It is not a safe place to swim.

If you want to cool yourself off with some water.

You could always go to the local swimming pool, I suppose.

On the live chat, we are talking about things that we've done

that we are slightly embarrassed about,

or maybe something foolish or stupid that we've done in the past.

For instance, for example, Steve just said something that I did whilst we were on holiday.

I decided to to try and jump from a height

and I think maybe I was, I

was being to to daring with my effort

and instead of landing on my feet, I landed on my knees and on my elbows and on my hands.

So there is a good example of doing something really, really stupid which I should not have done.

I remember at the time, Steve, just before I jumped,

I knew I was making a mistake and we do this.

Sometimes we do something, even though we kind of know deep down that it might be a bad idea.

Now I'm just wondering, is there anything you've done, Steve, that you might describe

as foolish or silly or stupid or clumsy?

Well, you know, you told me this was the subject while we walked here.

And, you know, in my entire life, I can't think that I've ever done anything stupid, really, Mr.

Duncan? No, silly.

No, I've been faultless. Faultless.

Absolutely faultless. Can I just say that is not true?

I remember the time when you put.

I remember the time when you put petrol in your diesel car a few years ago.

So you were there putting the the petrol into the car, and then you suddenly realised

that you were putting petrol into your diesel car.

So there is a good example of something very silly.

I remember when I was little, are you going to let me talk about that?

Oh, okay then. Yeah.

Yes. So

it's very easy, at least in the UK, to put petrol in your diesel engine.

You can't do it. The other way round because the nozzles won't fit.

but it is possible because there's different sized nozzles on petrol and diesel in the UK.

I don't know about in other countries, if you try to do it the other way around, the thing won't go in.

No you can't.

It's very difficult to put diesel into a petrol engine because the nozzle won't fit. Yes.

So I did accidentally put petrol in the diesel engine.

Now I didn't have to have the,

the fuel tank flushed out because I read that if you just put a little bit in, it's okay.

Oh, so I think it's up to 5 or 10%.

I can't remember what it was, but luckily it was okay.

But I think if you put too much in you, I drove off. It was all right.

Good. You've got to be careful because you can obviously break the engine.

That was a bit silly.

I think a lot of us have probably done that, over time.

Probably wrecked our engines. And it's,

something a bit silly.

In a bit stupid.

The other thing I do on the roads, Mr.

Duncan, is argue, get into arguments with other people on the road. Yes.

so this is really silly and stupid.

Yes. Maybe a stupid thing would be picking a fight with another person on the road.

Because when you think about it, Steve and I think that this is a serious subject.

I suppose when you think about it, you might.

Any stupid things? Any

silly things which you want to share with foolish things?

I remember when I was a kid, I brought a brand new bicycle, a brand new bike.

When I was, I think I was about 18 and I brought this lovely bike.

I bought it from a shop brand new, and the second day that I had the bike,

can you guess what I did?

I drove, I rode my bike into the back of a car and destroyed the bike.

Brand new, I'd had it for one day, 24 hours.

I had the bike.

And because I was not concentrating on the road, because I was being distracted

and not paying attention to the road, guess what happened?

I destroyed my bike by running into the back of a car.

Now that is a very stupid thing.

And yes, I know it was my fault quite often.

If you are not paying attention, if you are being careless did it completely right.

The bike off it did. It bent everything.

The frame, the front forks where the front wheel attaches to everything was destroyed.

So I had to scrap this brand new bike.

So no insurance, nothing like that.

So that I was about 18 at the time and I had been saving up

for many, many weeks for this bike, so I knew I wanted the bike.

He got a bit of a habit with bikes.

I mean, I remember when we were together, you you purchased a bike, motorbike for the road.

Yes, a motorbike, a motorbike.

And,

Dude, only you hadn't even gone out on it.

Not even the first time.

And you were doing something and you dropped the bike.

I was just moving it, and it fell onto its handlebars and broke something off.

One of the brake levers that you use when you want to apply the brakes snapped off. So.

So that that's another stupid thing I did.

I decided to move the motorbike, but I lost my balance and dropped it, and I hadn't even ridden it on the road yet.

So I I've, I've managed to destroy a bicycle

and I've also managed to, to damage a motorbike without even trying.

I've also damaged myself and I remember as well, when you purchased quite an expensive camera, which you were able to do.

Thank thanks to lovely donations. Yeah.

Do you really want to tell the story, though? Yes, it was very traumatic.

So you bought this lovely camera out of donations from from lovely people that watch you.

And, you hadn't even used it.

You were setting it up outside.

It was quite an expensive camera.

And I've still got, by the way, the camera still works perfectly.

It isn't destroyed before anyone asks, but.

Well, that's the no point to me telling the story now is the.

And you were setting it up on the tripod, and there was a gust of wind and you fell over.

And as you fell over, you hit the tripod and the brand new camera

smashed onto our concrete patio at the back.

Yeah, I quite, quite dramatic as well.

Very dramatic.

And the lens cover broke off and smashed.

How it still worked, I'll never know.

But you hadn't even used it. Well, I'm going to. Well, I had used it.

I had it for about two days. Again.

I don't know how I do it, Steve.

I don't know how I do it, but I managed to break things.

But this particular camera, the camera we're talking about is not smashed or broken.

It is wonderful Japanese technology.

That's all I'm going to say.

It's Japanese technology and it works perfectly in fact, it is my Panasonic camera that I use for a lot of things.

A lot of my filming I use that particular camera for.

It's very distracting when I'm Steve doing that.

And I think on the light you keep looking at the live chat.

Now please tell us, please tell us your, foolish things that you've done that might have been embarrassing, but certainly foolish.

And you might want to share them with the rest of us.

we've all we've all done silly things.

I mean, I've done silly things.

and, maybe at work, sometimes embarrassing things when you're giving a presentation

and then you lose your place and you forget what you want to say, and, you're all embarrassed.

You might have the wrong notes, things like that.

I've done a lot of that when I'm having to, to do talks to people at work or to customers.

Sometimes we'll have to.

I can I just say I've done loads of stupid things on the live stream, things

that I've forgotten to do or things that I've forgotten to say when I wanted to.

For example, last Wednesday, can you believe last Wednesday

I put I had the wrong date on my live stream because I was rushing to set up the live stream.

So you know what happened?

I kept the old date. In fact, it was.

It was a very old date.

It was July.

So I think it said the 25th of July, even though it wasn't the 25th of July.

So very, very strange.

So that is a stupid thing to do is a foolish thing, especially when you're rushing

sometimes when you rush, you make mistakes.

And quite often those mistakes are silly.

Foolish mistakes.

I keep saying it, but please tell us of something silly you've done.

Maybe recently.

It could be.

For example, I was cooking some bread in the bread maker.

not long after we'd had it, and I forgot to put, the liquid in,

so it baked the whole bread cycle, which takes about four hours.

And, when I took the lid off, it was just burnt flour.

Yes. It was, it wasn't very good. So.

So needless to say, we did not eat that bread.

We definitely did not eat that bread. And last night, Mr.

Duncan, I cooked his a shitty con calm, and, I forgot to put the, I forgot to put the, beans in,

so we just plate basically had a plate of mince, which is, a bit silly, but never mind.

So it is possible sometimes when you're not paying attention, or maybe when you are doing something,

one thing, or if you are trying to do too many things as well as a man coming out of my ear.

Oh, oh, that was painful.

Did you see that? Somebody just came out of my ear.

maybe I can say I don't know that I know that.

Okay, Steve, I think they were illegally trying to swim in the in the Blue Lagoon.

but, hopefully they might get caught, and then we can catch it all on camera.

One of the areas around here.

Well, this particular area that that they've, they've actually reserved

this area for, for the wildlife to grow, to grow and

some people like to come up here and pick the wild flowers.

So I think that's what they were doing.

And they're just behind us now going off into the distance.

Steve, there are, of course, lots of, wild orchids, orchids,

everybody, everybody gets excited when you mention orchids.

In the UK, because there's something exotic about an orchid

and they're like a protected species in the UK.

So if you see an orchid you go look at the orchid and you tell everybody about it and you get lots of kudos.

because there's something in the UK about orchids that everybody gets very excited about.

Can I just say I've never, ever heard anyone ever, in the history of my existence ever get excited, always on about orchids, Mr.

Duncan, if you find orchids somewhere on a field, for example, you immediately.

You couldn't build on that field. You couldn't use it for anything.

They suddenly becomes a site of Special Scientific Interest.

Well, I think that's preserved area.

Well, I think that's good for certain types of plant life because, well, this is something that, that

I think we've become aware of around here during certain times of the year, especially when the weather is very unusual.

You can find that in nature things actually change.

They become quite strange.

I've noticed this year we have a lot of grasshoppers around everywhere.

So we were walking here this morning and there were grasshoppers everywhere.

I've never seen so many grasshoppers hopping around to be honest.

It's it's so whenever the weather changes or if there is some sort of difference

in the air quality, or maybe there is more sunshine or more rain.

You quite often find that nature does something different as well, so I always find that quite interesting.

People are,

getting a bit anxious.

Well, we some there's something we're not doing today that stupid

is that we have already prepared ahead of time.

skin, don't worry about it because we do have,

super duper factor factor 50.

Because we've had a crazy year with the weather.

There is a committee of people that, that look after them. Yeah.

So what exactly do you do in 2000?

And who are you?

Well, I'm Mr.

Duncan, and that's Mr. Steve, and we teach English.

And at the moment we are live across the world.

Well, in 2002, a group of people spoke to,

the local landowner, Wenlock Estate and asked about taking on this field in the woods

and also the old tower, as a trust,

which, in fact, they set up as a charity trust eventually.

And, one of the stipulations was that, firstly to repair the tower.

Got it in a,

safe condition.

and for this, which they did, they raised the money and did it.

And, the second one, of course, is, our interest is more in the land

management now, I've just retired as chairman after 14, you know,

so I think when I was one of, these men, that's one of that, one of the trustees.

I'm a trustee.

I'm not a trustee anymore because we've got new people on.

But, you know, the idea is that we look after the the land, and here's our ecologist.

Oh, I say yes, I saw some people earlier picking flowers and picking plans, actually.

Oh, well, there's lots of there's lots of ragwort around this year.

There is we're actually we actually have the, the old this top,

this top plateau will be cut, unveiled, and removed.

and then harrowed.

the idea of that is it will spread everything around

and, give it a, you know, you know, spread everything around.

And the orchids, of course.

since we started doing it have multiplied, though, and we do an orchid count every year.

sometime in July.

Normally, first time we did it, we had about 1800.

last year we had 5700.

Oh, that's that's a lot of orchids.

the pyramidal, orchid we did not many columns potted.

They'd gone over in the heat.

this year we had, it was 4000 ish.

4200 people to something.

And and and, and, but, you know, this is how things go.

But John is the he's the man who, it was sold to do all this.

it's an ecologist.

He came on board about ten years ago, and he's got it all sorted.

He's the man to talk to about it.

Well, I say, well, we I tell you what we were doing. We always come up.

So, I'm going to send an email address here so that I can join the the local orchid.

You look at the local orchid county line.

So every year and you like to tell us what you do, then tell us about it.

Well, well we can't we can't orchid.

So we've got a wonderful orchid up here. The pyramidal orchid.

There are very few places in Shropshire. And this 5000.

So we have to count 5000 in 2 hours.

So we need 20 or 30 people.

We line them up with a piece of string to bit between each person, so that they stay in the line.

And we walk across the field, and you count the orchids between yourself and the person to your right.

And it's been going up every year since we started putting it

into really good management, because they used to have horses on here, donkeys.

Yeah. Now it's cut for hay. It's absolutely wonderful.

And we're now up to about 5000 permanent orchids.

That's a lot.

The population in the whole of Shropshire, that is a lot of orchids as well.

It's fantastic when you count them.

It's amazing when you count them.

It's this because the donkeys aren't here anymore that they've come back.

Yes, but particularly because it's it's not grazed.

It's now, a hard cut.

So a contractor, a farmer will come in, cut everything,

let it, dry off in the sun.

Put it up into rows, put it up into big bales and take it away to feed, to stock.

So it's going to be fed to cattle, to horses.

Which is why we have to take the ragwort out.

Because dry ragwort is poisonous.

so, so the animals, the ragwort, the animals don't like the record.

It can be very serious to them. It's more than that.

They don't like it. It can.

When it's dry, it can have serious effects on them.

For those wondering, by the way, ragwort is is a tall flower and you have lots

of little yellow yellow petals on them and lots of flowers with yellow petals.

But the very few ragwort left because we've been pulling it for the last five weeks.

So that's that's why there's which is why that's why there's not at the moment, you see.

Because they've all been taken away.

Because if you give ragwort, it is a type of plant.

I'm sure you will look it up on Google somewhere.

If you look it up on the internet, you will find that it is.

It is not always growing in all parts of the UK.

So it is quite interesting when you find a certain type of plant that is rare

growing in many places, but this particular area is a type of reserve.

So you might describe this area as a type of reserve where all of the plant life is allowed

to flourish naturally and to

survive.

And it's very interesting.

So our friends behind us, a couple of them are involved with preserving the windmill.

And the other two, the second couple that joined is they are ecologists.

They are people who are interested in nature, the environment, and sometimes

preserving or making sure that certain types of plants

are not destroyed or damaged by mankind.

You know, the sort of thing that I'm talking about, I'm sure it's very interesting.

So this is very I have to say, I was not expecting this today.

Wasn't that amazing to see some ragwort in a minute?

because they're picking the ragwort because it's bad for the.

The bad for the cattle, apparently, yes.

I just mentioned this very briefly that certain plants are not good for cattle.

So if you gather the grass, if you take all of this grass and feed it to the animals, you have to make sure

that there are no poisonous plants that could cause harm to them.

Yes, because they're going to to cut this for hay, dry it, and then feed it to animals.

But if you've got the ragwort in there, it it's poisonous to them.

so why they're picking that out before the farmer comes and,

and cuts the cuts the hay, for the cattle.

So not only do they look for the orchids that are very nice and quite often rare, Mr.

Steve said earlier that a lot of people get excited, and I think I think they were getting very excited by the orchids.

So maybe you're right, Steve.

So they're, because they're looking after this area.

They've got this trust.

The land is being looked after by this group of people, local people getting involved, helping the local community

and ensuring that this land is looked after and, is in particular today

making sure that there's no ragwort in, in the hay. Yes.

When we say abundance, we mean lots and lots of.

But this year, because we've had such a crazy spring and a very strange summer,

apparently there is more ragwort around the normal

than usual, and a lot of people have been complaining that it's everywhere.

Mainly farmers.

People are quite friendly.

You see, if you come to certain parts of England, you will meet lovely people, you will meet nice people.

Whereas if it was here in the wild, they would

be able to smell it and they would avoid eating it.

But if it's mixed in with the hay when it's, harvested,

then, they might eat it and not know that they eat it and be very sick.

So so it is, it is important sometimes to, to make sure that you're not giving things

to, to the cattle or to the cows that might cause them some harm. Oh,

there's a bumble bee just crashed into my face then did you see that?

One of the things I've noticed today, Steve, there aren't many flies around now.

This year we have been literally.

I'm not I'm not being dramatic here.

We have been plagued this year.

There have been so many flies in the house buzzing around.

And you know, that flies are really annoying.

They're also disgusting as well because they they do all sorts of horrible things.

Yes, flies like to congregate around, excrement poo,

as we all know, because that's where they lay their eggs and the maggots hatch out.

It's actually, we know their life cycle.

but yes, because we live in the country, of course.

And there are cattle farmers around here.

Then there will be big piles of poo everywhere.

And we had what I can only describe as a near plague of flies all this week.

we've had to keep the windows shut. Mr. Duncan's been killing them.

I've lost count of how many flies we've had to kill in the house this year.

Now, the next time you described me to someone, you might be tempted to say, Mr.

Duncan. So lovely he wouldn't hurt a fly.

Can I just say that's not true?

Because they are annoying.

They are disgusting because they.

They land in the poo, they eat the poo, and then they come into your house, and then they land on your food,

and all of the poo is on their feet, and then the poo goes everywhere.

And then you eat the poo and then you're ill and you become really sick.

You have a bad stomach and then you can't stop pooing, and then everything just gets completely out of hand.

So that's the reason why we don't like flies.

I was reading an article this morning about mosquitoes in the UK.

Okay. because of course we, we read about, global warming.

And here in the UK, we don't have we have mosquitoes.

We do.

We have 35 species of mosquito in the UK.

Most of them are very small,

but we don't have any that carry serious diseases like malaria.

That's a good thing, isn't it?

Because we don't we don't actually get malaria in this country.

So. Because even though we have mosquitoes, yes, we don't get malaria.

Mosquitoes carry lots of other diseases like yellow fever,

dengue fever is a very serious disease as well.

because the reason we don't we don't have those particular species of mosquito that carry

those particular diseases because, they can't survive the cold winters that we have here.

which is just as well, because apparently we do get a lot of,

certain species of mosquito that will carry malaria.

They come in on the lorries and the boats, front that come from foreign countries delivering goods.

And apparently around some of the ports, they have discovered some of these species of mosquito

that could potentially carry malaria, but they can't survive the cold winters.

But in the future, if winters get milder, a milder global warming, there's a very real possibility that we could get,

a species of mosquito that survives the winter and we could get malaria in the UK.

But it's unlikely. Very unlikely. So don't worry.

If you come to the UK, you won't have to worry at the moment about catching malaria from the mosquitoes. But.

But at least the fly is have have relatively

disappeared.

There don't seem to be so many flies around now, by the way, we're also being watched by a buzzard.

There is a huge buzzard flying over us, circling around.

Yes, you can hear it. Can you hear it?

Oh, it's stopped now.

So, so quite often we get lots of birds of prey around here.

Buzzards, kestrels.

now that's that's not.

There's two of them.

There's actually two buzzards.

Those are actually buzzards flying. Flying over our heads.

I think they're waiting for us to collapse on the floor so they can peck at all our corpses.

Yes, yes, lots of buzzards around here.

It's a sort of a medium sized predatory bird that will probably take mice and voles and think maybe.

Well, they can actually pick up.

You might not believe this, Dave, but buzzards can actually pick up babies.

Rabbits.

They can actually pick a rabbit up a small rabbit and take it away.

And we've got lots of rabbits around here.

The farmers don't like buzzards because, they can, in fact, and have been known

to, take out the eyes of baby sheep for ill.

That's that's horrible.

Yes, they will attack sheep and they, they don't can't kill them directly.

because obviously the buzzards, I think the wingspan of a buzzard is about six foot.

Is it something like.

It is. It is large.

They are they're, they are actually quite big birds a couple of metres across, something like that, maybe not quite that big but.

So they couldn't carry off a baby lamb. Not.

But they can kill the bird by pecking at its eyes.

Kill the lamb. And then, they can do that.

Then the lamb would, would die and then it can eat it then on the ground.

So farmers tend to kill the buzzards if they, if they're hovering around near the near the lambing season.

The only problem now is you can't kill them, Steve.

It's actually a legal.

It's a you can't you can't touch any bird of prey and you will go to prison if you kill a bird of prey.

So we have buzzards around here, another bird of prey that I absolutely love.

And I was very lucky to see one the other day flying very close to our house.

And that was a red kite.

Very rare.

But, you don't see them very often.

They tend to be very timid.

And in the past they used to be lots, but they were they were virtually hunted into extinction.

But now, fortunately, due to the preservation of that particular

type of bird, fortunately, their numbers are starting to increase again.

But another beautiful bird, the red kite.

And apparently it it dissolves plastics.

so if you've got a pair of Speedos on, made out of, material that isn't cotton, you might find that that

that your speedo is dissolve, you know, because it's not going to oily, horrible oily liquid.

It can't be very good for your liver. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

I suppose it depends whose speed those are melting away.

Talking of which, by the way, we were in Much Wenlock yesterday having a cup of tea and a cake,

and we couldn't help but notice there were many men, many gentlemen,

riding around on bicycles, wearing tight lycra.

But the blokes, the men were really, really fat and they were riding around on bicycles and we couldn't help noticing that.

Well, it wasn't, let's just say it wasn't a nice sight when you are eating your lunch.

No, men over 30 should not be wearing Lycra.

It's offensive.

So I don't really find it offensive.

because obviously the riding a bike cycling is very popular.

and if you, if you say you've, you've lost your figure,

it's not very pleasant for other people to have to see you

in Lycra showing all those bits that you don't want to see of men over a certain age.

you know, I mean, if you're in your 20s and just slim and good looking, get bring it on.

The more, well, the better.

Very tight clothing, if you are over a certain age or a certain size, maybe.

Maybe wearing that sort of clothing isn't a good idea.

I know it sounds as if we are being judgemental, but I'm sure there are lots of other people

I always remember Steve, there should be a sign in all the tea

shops and much, much more because of course people go out for a soccer ride

and they want to end up at a tea shop somewhere to have a nice cup of tea and some cake.

But there should be notices on all the windows of tea shops.

So throughout the UK that you that lycra is banned.

That's it. They just are over a certain age.

But of course I suppose that would then be a little bit unfair to some people.

but this should be somebody.

Well, when you go to a shop, if you are a cyclist and you like cycling, and then you go to the shop

and you're buying your bike, you're buying all your gear, all the stuff that you need to go on a bike.

there should be somebody in that shop.

There should be a licence that is given out.

And you are not allowed to buy Lycra unless you fit a certain profile. So?

So maybe some people would not be allowed to actually buy the like for shorts because.

Because they would not pass the test.
