We have a public holiday on Monday,

so everyone will be having an extra day off this weekend.

I am not sure why

we are having a public holiday next Monday, but it is a very long weekend.

I'm happy Mr.

Steve is also very happy because he can have a nice rest,

even though at the moment he is outside in the garden working, he doesn't have to.

What do you normally do if you have a very short holiday?

So maybe you have an extra day in the week.

Maybe you have a long weekend like us here in England.

So this weekend we have a very long weekend because it is a public holiday on Monday,

we normally refer to that type of holiday as a bank holiday,

because traditionally all of the banks would close.

Many shops would also be closed as well on bank holidays.

So on Monday many people will not be working, including Mr.

Steve. By the way, it is tomorrow.

For those wondering, Bank Holiday Monday is tomorrow and I have to say

I feel very excited about it because it is a long weekend.

Maybe we're not sure yet.

So this is not official, but perhaps tomorrow we might do a live stream.

We are going out somewhere tomorrow

and we will try to do a live stream if it is possible, because there might be

some bad weather.

Or maybe we can't get a signal for the phone, so we will see

what happens as we have a lovely long weekend.

Some people like to take it easy.

If you take it easy, it means you are relaxed.

Think you are pleasing yourself.

You are taking a rest.

Because of course, the reason why I do this is to help you with your English.

So here is a very interesting English phrase.

Are you ready?

An English phrase just for you

to help you improve your English through and through.

Today's English phrase is put two and two together.

It is a very interesting phrase that we often use when a person

comes to a conclusion, you realise something.

Maybe you have been watching something and in your mind you have been thinking about it.

To come to a conclusion based on clues or things observed.

So things you have seen, things you have observed.

We can say in English that you put two and two together.

For example, in a sentence we can say, I have put two and two together and I know they are dating.

So in this situation, maybe you have been watching a couple of people, maybe in the office,

maybe you've been observing two of your work colleagues,

and you've noticed that they always leave

and arrive together for work.

You might put two and two together.

It means you are coming to a conclusion because you've been watching something or observing something very carefully.

I have put two and two together.

Of course it is possible

to do that and come to the wrong conclusion.

So sometimes people will come to the wrong conclusion.

They will jump to conclusions.

They will think they know something when they doubt.

So it is possible sometimes to put two and two together.

But you can be wrong.

You might be incorrect.

Something you have seen, you might actually get the wrong conclusion because of it.

So you do have to be careful if you are ever going to put two and two together,

you have to make sure you are correct before you say anything.

Don't say anything until you are sure.

A lot of people think these days, many

news outlets, or maybe people on social media

quite often will put two and two together.

They will jump to conclusions.

Sometimes it can get you in a lot of trouble as well.

So if you are ever feeling like coming to a conclusion or guessing something,

be careful before you put two and two together because sometimes you can be wrong.

I think that's a good phrase to be honest.

And we do often use it, especially when we are spreading gossip.

We are spreading stories.

We might decide to put two and two together.

But be careful.

Be very careful if you are doing that, because you can come to the wrong conclusion.

well, to obsessed, well, you could, I presume you could get, so obsessed with your

your pet, your dog, or whatever that you neglect the human companions around you, your partner, your wife, your husband.

Maybe you get more love from your pet than you do from your partner.

in which case, maybe if you give to your pet,

you get love back.

Whereas if you cook meals, take people in the car.

Maybe you're not getting much love back from your partner, and therefore you are seeking it

in your dog or your cat or your horse or whatever it is that you have.

I'm often suspicious of that, but,

I don't know, maybe,

maybe, maybe that's a possibility because, you know, dogs in particular give love, don't they?

Well, we often say that animals give love unconditionally. Conditionally.

Yes. Unconditional.

Whereas humans often want something in return for that love.

They think, well, I'm giving all this, I want something back.

Whereas you know dogs don't think like that.

And I know, I do know relationships, I know people in relationships where, you know,

if they want something out of that relationship, they've got to buy presents and gifts and all sorts of things.

Yeah. The relationships are all different.

They're not all necessarily based on love.

And if they are, sometimes people want something in return for that.

Anyway, talking of which, is it possible to go too far with the love of your pets?

Now, in this case, we are talking about dogs now.

Last week, the well-known French actor Alain Delon passed away in his will.

He requested that his dog,

his pet dog, his beloved dog be buried with him.

There is just one problem with that.

The dog was still alive.

And then there is Alain Delon, a dog called Lubo.

Isn't that what a lovely dog! It looks slightly crazy.

If now maybe it's just the photograph.

Maybe it's just the moment when that photograph was taken.

But the dog.

This does look slightly crazy.

So that is Alain Delon Delon's dog.

What he wanted was the dog to be buried with him

when somebody dies, a loved one dies.

You are so grief stricken.

You take your own life.

May be may be they may be the island alone.

You know what wills are like.

So before a person gets too old, they will often make a list of things that they want to happen after they die.

Maybe a person might want to be buried in a certain place, or with a certain thing

that they're holding on to.

So it does seem a little

cruel to to kill, to have your dog killed, to be buried with you.

I mean, why not let your dog live out its natural life and then have it buried with you after it seems a little unusual.

Yeah, well, it might be seen as extreme anyway. It's not happening.

The family have said that we will carry out all of the wishes.

But we are not going to to put the dog to sleep so it can spend eternity with its owner.

Apparently, according to the live chat, Lubo was adopted by a friend of his.

So that is what is happening to the dog.

Instead of it going into the coffin

not by choice, it is actually going to be adopted instead.

So I would say that that may be in that situation.

Steve, the story does have,

a bittersweet ending.

Yeah, because the dog will soon get over the death of its owner.

I in fact, it's probably I got over it within 24 hours.

I don't think dogs, really.

I mean, yes, they're loyal to their owners, but how long do they moan?

There was supposed to be a big

event taking place in this area.

It was an event that's held every year.

The local hot air balloon festival is taking place this weekend.

Mr. Steve,

the only problem is,

how can I put it?

It is too windy

to fly hot air balloons this weekend,

so everyone is going to the fair to see all of these lovely balloons taking off and flying high in the sky.

The only problem is they can't do it because it's too windy.

So because of the strong winds.

Now I didn't know this, Steve, but you can't fly a hot air balloon if it's windy.

It's actually incredibly dangerous because the air, the pressure of the air can can cause the balloon to,

to go off course, but also it can actually cause the balloon to collapse as well.

And you don't want that, to be honest.

You don't want to be, crashing into power lines because you can't control your balloon.

No, it's all right. I presume it's all right if you're very high up.

It's quite advantageous.

But these are these, sort of leisure balloons.

You're not going to go too far up, in terms of height.

You're going to stick to fairly low heights. Well, apparently there aren't.

There are height restrictions.

Hot air balloons are not allowed to fly above a certain level.

Two reasons. One, because it's it's unsafe.

Because you might there might be aeroplanes and all sorts of other things flying around.

And also the hot air balloon doesn't perform in the same way once you get to a certain altitude.

So you do have to be very careful.

I have never been in a hot air balloon and guess what?

I'm never going to do it.

It seems like one of the things that I would never do, because they always look so fragile.

there's too many videos on YouTube about balloons crashing, plummeting to the ground full of people.

Every year there's a story, but the core of that is, you know, what is your your risk appetite?

it must be quite exciting.

What are the chances of the balloon crashing? Probably very low.

probably you've got a greater risk of driving, to the event where the hot air balloon is,

than you have actually going up in the hot air balloon. I think they're reasonably safe.

I don't know if I'd want to do it.

I don't think I would, I don't think I would know.

There are there are many things I wouldn't go in.

Anything that leaves the ground.

But they're nice to watch, because.

Okay, Steve, I'm still talking.

I thought you finished helicopters.

That's another thing. I would never go up in a helicopter.

Now, something we've often discussed is this is that is that if you become rich and famous or rich,

maybe you've got a very successful business, or something like that,

and you decide that you're going to get yourself a helicopter or even a small private aeroplane.

lots of successful rich people die, don't they?

Because they, they engage in somewhat risky pastimes because they're risk takers.

Anyway, people are successful in business, like taking risks.

And so they will learn to fly by a helicopter, that sort of thing.

So I think they often expose themselves to, to more risk, when, they become.

Yes. It is interesting when a person becomes wealthy, successful,

they might actually believe that they are invincible, even that the

the world around them doesn't actually affect them in any way because they've had so much good fortune.

And, look, they might actually believe that, that nothing can happen to them.

But you're you're right.

It is.

It is often the case where a person becomes very wealthy and they start doing things that might put them in danger,

they might decide to fly their own helicopter, or maybe they buy a boat or something

that is in a place that could could cause problems or caused them to to come to harm.

Yes, because of course we had we had that terrible, terrible event recently, that terrible sinking off the coast of Sicily,

of the the group of people, a family millionaire,

when in fact, I think he was a billionaire and he had this amazing huge yacht.

Really incredible.

But again, you have to I suppose you have to be careful with these things.

But I think if you become successful, Steve, sometimes you forget that.

You forget that the laws of physics and the laws of nature, nature somehow don't exist.

But they do when you push.

But people that become very successful in business, in anything really, they are they do tend to have a certain personality

because to become successful, you very successful, you have to take risks.

And and with that, absolutely necessary.

and unless you do that, you probably won't become successful.

and so that personality of wanting to take risks is there

not just in business but outside that so dangerous sports, that sort of thing. So,

you know, we need people to be successful.

We need successful businesses, and we need those people that have got those personalities.

That's a very good question.

A question that we often get asked. Certainly you do, Mr. Duncan.

Well, speaking is the hardest part of doing anything, performing.

So I always think that speaking is a little bit like performing.

You're putting on a show, so when you speak, you are on show.

You are doing something publicly, even if you're just speaking to one person

or maybe a stranger in the street, there is always a certain amount of pressure to to do it well.

However,

there are ways of improving your spoken English.

To speak is to

use your personality, and by that we mean your your confidence.

The way you project yourself.

So I would always say that the best way to do that is to practice away from other people.

Two things that

I always suggest is, well, the first one is practice

with yourself.

Talk. Don't be afraid to listen to your voice.

If you have maybe a recording device, something you can use, maybe your phone,

perhaps you can use that and record your voice and then listen to it and if you don't like the sound, make changes.

So never be worried about listening to your own voice,

because the more you do it, the more relaxed you will become about it.

The other thing you can also do, of course, is to look at yourself in the mirror.

And I know what you're going to say.

It does sound strange, but look at yourself in the mirror, speak English, listen to something and repeat it.

You have to become comfortable doing it.

It's a bit like anything really, when you think about it. Steve.

When you start doing something for the first time, it might feel strange,

it might feel unusual, it might feel odd.

You might feel nervous doing it.

So I always say that the hardest part of learning anything is actually doing it.

And that also includes speaking English as well.

That's what it is. True.

That's a very good thing to suggest, Mr. Duncan, is to record yourself.

I often do that.

I started doing that was singing if I'm learning a song because what you hear from the sound coming back is not the same.

I tell you, it's quite scary.

You, you, you record yourself singing or talking and listen to yourself whenever you hear your own voice.

it sounds odd at first, and you might be a bit embarrassed,

but if you carry on doing it, it's a good way to iron out mistakes in pronunciation, for example.

So I don't think this is just about learning languages.

I think this is just about any situation where you might have to talk about

Steve will know all about this because in his job, he has lots of meetings.

So when we talk about meetings, I think you are talking about situations

where you might have to talk about a certain thing with other people.

So that is something that can happen in many situations, especially in work.

And I think if that is happening,

then you must have some understanding or some idea, maybe something written down, maybe some notes.

You might notice Mr.

Steve likes to write down his notes on a piece of paper,

just to make sure that he knows what he's saying, or maybe something he wants to say later.

So that is my advice.

The advice is, if you are going to talk about something, make sure that you understand the subject.

So we are not just talking about language, we are also talking about the knowledge of that thing you are talking about.

you will over time, naturally build up your vocabulary.

The phrase is laughter is the best medicine.

You will often hear people use this phrase when they want to say.

Sometimes it is good to have a laugh.

Sometimes it is good to enjoy a moment with a little bit of humour.

You may have noticed that we like to do that sometimes, not very often.

We might try to do it, but it doesn't mean we will be successful.

So this is I think this is a good phrase, don't you, Steve? Yes.

Because what it's saying is that if you're laughing, you're not you're not stress.

It's saying that if you're stressed, stress can make you ill, can't it?

and I think because it relieves stress, it's good for your health.

It's a very British way pronouncing something.

Which is more sort of Italian. So you should be able to learn Italian quite well.

whereas Italian people often have problems pronouncing English because the vowels are often extended, virus.

So maybe you, a child, is embarrassed about laughing and is wanting to suppress it.

A giggle is to me is like a suppressed laugh. Yes, almost.

You know, you're a bit embarrassed about

you don't.

You don't want to laugh, so you try to suppress the sound a bit.

So we often, we often refer to giggle, as childish laughter.

But it is possible for all of us, whatever age we are, to actually have a giggle.

Here's another one, Steve. Types of laughter.

You might howl with laughter, a loud, uncontrollable laugh.

000. Yes.

It's very it's very loud. You can't control it.

Something's really leave.

You've lost all control.

And you're just howling with laughter.

And it's to the extent that you will hurt.

Because sometimes you can laugh, can't you?

And it actually hurts because you're using all these abdominal muscles

when you're when you laugh very strongly and, and it just becomes painful after a while sometimes.

I mean, you know, you can you can literally laugh to become your whole body

aches with the effort of laughing or laughing just a bit.

A bit like this really? Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Mr. Steve lights that.

I haven't used that for ages, so it is possible to laugh and and maybe even lose control of yourself.

When you are laughing, you howl.

Maybe everyone can hear your laughter because you are laughing so much.

You are laughing out loud.

You howl with laughter.

Here's another one.

We have so many to look at.

By the way, I don't think I can do all these today, unfortunately.

Raucous.

Now, there's an interesting word.

I bet you have never seen this word before.

Not you, Mr. Steve, but maybe the viewer out there.

Maybe you've never seen this word raucous.

It's a great word, quite often referring to something that is rowdy, unruly or unrestrained.

It can also be quite annoying as well. Raucous laughter.

Yes, often it can often mean as well.

It's usually created a crowd of people, isn't it? Yes.

And they're they're laughing in

almost an aggressive way.

they're being, Well, rowdy. Yeah.

The laughter is not suppressed in any way.

It's very it's loud.

It's it could almost become dangerous.

It. Yes.

It's totally uncontrolled laughter amongst people who I don't know.

I don't want to say they're raucous.

It just means, well, you're you're creating a disturbance.

Yeah, well, a disturbance is being.

And for example, here's an example.

You're in a restaurant with your loved one.

And you're going out for a quiet evening and there's a table not far from you with 20 people on

and they're all getting slightly drunk and they start laughing all the time.

And that laughter becomes very loud and boisterous and it started to have an impact on your enjoyment of your meal at that restaurant.

You could describe it as raucous laughter.

it's, it's, you know, they have no concern for other people.

Yeah. The effect they're having.

Raucous, uncontrolled.

That's their words.

The words underneath. It's a rowdy, unruly and unrestrained.

That's it.

So the a person forgets almost forgets that they're the people there.

And we've all been in that situation.

Maybe you've been to a very nice restaurant or you've stayed somewhere, maybe a holiday resort.

And there there is always a group of people who have to be raucous.

It's a great word, Beatrice says. That is a new word.

Here's another one. Steve and I just mentioned something quick.

Okay, Steve, we've caused laughter on the live stream. Will you have Mr. Duncan?

Nick Travis says that he's quoting what you said.

Duncan said that this isn't planned and it's all spontaneous, so it's making people

put that common emoji of somebody laughing so much they're crying.

Duncan meant was, is he doesn't tell me about it.

We we don't plan this.

We don't plan it, Mr.

probably the other thing to point out is I spend hours and hours designing all of this.

And it takes me many, many hours.

Another word that may be new guffaw.

Guffaw is also unrestrained laughter, but maybe not annoying. Just

unrestrained guffaw something that you laugh at

and maybe you suddenly 00000 yeah.

Something is you've lost control.

Something has made you laugh and you're just guffawing.

You're just unconscious to be laughing. Yes.

and, people are probably laughing at the fact that you're laughing.

You're probably crying as well.

It's quite likely.

Well, that means

that you are getting a laugh. Probably.

You know, you're laughing about something, which is, it's, for example, here's an example.

Okay.

You might say, oh, Mr. Duncan. Oh, I missed Mr.. Steve.

Are you cold because of your bald head

and people like.

Oh, but you might be a bit offended by that.

And you might say, that's a cheap laugh.

So you're getting a laugh at somebody else's expense.

You're making somebody else feel uncomfortable because of some physical thing that they've got.

a cheap laugh.

It means laughing.

Usually it's directed at a person, isn't it, Mr. Duncan?

a person or something.

that has an obvious fault or flaw.

Yeah. And you are making fun of that thing.

It is a very easy joke to make.

So there is no creativity taking place.

It is just a very easy joke to make.

Maybe someone will make fun of the fact that I wear glasses and they say, oh, Mr.

Duncan, you might not be able to see where you're going because you're wearing glasses. Well,

no, don't make fun of my glasses.

I can't help it.

It is a cheap laugh because you are making fun of a person for something that they can't control.

Yes, exactly. And it's.

And I often get that with being bald are people are often always doing it.

I mean I don't mind, but it's a they get a cheap laugh at a group of people.

They'll say, oh, it's okay, we're outside.

It's it's windy or something like that.

And they might say, oh, someone has hairs all blowing around and they might say, oh, you don't have that trouble, do you, Steve?

you know, it's almost like a sarcastic humour, but they're trying to get a laugh at your expense.

So that laugh.

That is a cheap laugh. Here's another one.

A person might burst out

laughing if you laugh.

If you burst out laughing, you suddenly burst out.

Your laughter suddenly appears quite often by surprise.

Oh oh, oh.

Whoa whoa whoa,

burst out laughing.

It's probably not that.

If someone does that, there is a good chance they might be possessed.

Sudden, unexpected laughter.

Something that's just made somebody laugh. You.

And they burst out laughing. You burst out laughing.

Isn't laughter infectious, though?

Because one, one, one person starts laughing.

It often makes other people laugh.

It does laugh.

Laughter is infectious. Smile

a bit like diseases and viruses.

Here's another one. Steve.

now, this is the title of today's live stream.

Laugh your socks off, Mr. Steve.

You might laugh your socks off.

Not literally. This, of course, is figurative.

This is a an idiom or maybe a metaphor.

You are laughing so much you have uncontrollable laughter.

You can't stop laughing. It is almost

hurting you.

Laugh. Your socks. My bus.

my boss bent over and split his trousers and I laughed my socks off.

So I really did wonder what you were going to say then.

So uncontrollable laughter. You laugh your socks off.

Ha ha ha ha ha.

I like that that's what you do when you laugh your socks off.

You can't stop your laughing so much. It almost.

It's almost painful.

Here we go. Sense of humour.

So now we are looking at phrases that

concern the actual

way in which we see things as funny.

A person might have a sense of humour, things that make a person laugh.

Your sense of humour are the things around you that might cause you or make you laugh.

And we all have

our own individual sense of humour.

We all have things.

Maybe something that Mr.

Steve laughs at might not be the same thing that I laugh at.

Although to be honest, Steve and myself, we do have very similar sense of humour, don't we?

Yes, it just that that phrase just, implies that you have the ability to

to see humour and to laugh at it.

there are different categories. You can have lots of different categories of humour.

you could have a dark sense of humour where you laugh at things

may be to do with death or subjects that,

may be out of the realms of what most people would talk about.

Oh, I've use the word realm, Mr. Duncan.

or the area that people wouldn't talk about.

You have a dark.

So you could have a sarcastic sense of humour.

Yes. We might look at these later, by the way. Oh, right. Okay. This

is something that makes you laugh.

Do you, do you have the ability? Do you have a sense?

I mean, often it's used somebody you might make a joke about somebody, for example,

maybe about maybe someone is wearing a striped shirt and you might say to somebody, oh, you. Why?

Why have you come out in your pyjamas? Ha ha ha.

I see you might make a laugh and they might take it very seriously.

What do you mean?

What's wrong with my shirt?

And you might say, well.

Oh, come on, don't you have a sense of humour?

you can't, you just have a laugh.

But that is the problem, isn't it?

With with jokes.

One person's sense of humour might not be the same as another person's

sense of humour, which is where you can get types of conflict.

Here we go, Mr. Steve. This is the sort of thing I like.

Well, some some blue humour, blue jokes, dirty jokes, dirty, dirty jokes.

A bit like Benny Hill.

We mentioned Benny Hill earlier, didn't we, Steve? Yeah. So Benny Hill

was a comedian and some of his humour was.

It was a little bit rude and naughty blue humour.

So we often describe humour or jokes that might be a little rude.

They might have some naughty words, some rude or offensive words are contained in the jokes.

And I suppose whilst we're talking about blue humour, we will also talk about dark humour.

In fact, you touched on this a few moments ago, talking about things or making jokes about things that might be serious.

So jokes referring to unhappy or sad things you are making fun.

You are making a joke about something that other people might take seriously.

So as you said, you might make a joke.

This is something we do in English. in in England.

British humour.

We often make jokes about death.

People dying.

We will often make jokes.

We will make light of that particular thing.

Palmira refers to this.

You just said laughter can be a reaction to horrible events.

It can be because it's almost like.

Self-Defence.

It's almost like you're protecting yourself.

Because if something horrible happens,

maybe at a funeral, sometimes people will laugh if something happens because people want the relief of humour.

Yes, to take the stress out of a horrible event.

and sometimes you.

I mean, we've been to watch people perform

quite serious plays or, or they've been singing serious songs or they haven't been doing it very well.

But yeah, something makes you laugh.

and sometimes you do laugh in inappropriate moments because somebody is doing something in a way that is probably not

shouldn't be done in a particular way.

But yeah, certainly.

I mean,

you sometimes want to laugh at funerals, don't you? Yeah.

Just to because it's so sad.

Yeah. It's almost like you want to protect yourself by not facing up to the reality. What?

What your horrible event.

What you're talking about there, Steve, is inappropriate laughter or inappropriate humour, but dark humour,

it's normally the subject is something that lots of people don't like to actually talk about or express.

So it is. It is an interesting phrase, I think. Here's another one.

A person might be, oh wait there, I've jumped ahead.

Here we go, Steve.

Now, this is the word that people often use when they talk about my sense of humour or the way I behave

on here.

Zany humour.

Zany is a little bit crazy or maybe surreal or something

that is is exaggerated might be described as zany.

So some people say that I am zany, maybe a little bit wild, slightly crazy, even

zany means you.

You're laughing at things that often other people don't.

Yes. Well, well, it's it's crazy or surreal.

Yes, yes, actually.

So. Exactly.

So some people might not see

you might be, you might have sort of wild physical humour or something like something, something very different.

Jim Carrey, Jim Carrey, there's there's an example of a zany

comedian, lots of physical doing lots of physical things.

And, yeah, it's not just the straightforward

standing up, telling a joke and scenario, you know, that you would see that

a lot of stand up comedians, as you know, a certain format to often to that type of humour.

Yeah, it's but somebody like Jim Carrey, it's zany because they're often

being very physical at the same time, doing doing things that average human beings in,

in, in public would never do because they would make them selves look foolish or silly.

So, so when we talk about zany something that's it's wild, crazy, or even a little bit surreal.

Of course, some people, Mr.

Steve, don't have any humour.

They have no sense of humour.

They might even be described as humourless, a person who never laughs.

We all know people like this, don't we?

I'm sure you do, Steve and I do.

The people who never, who never seem to to even enjoy themselves.

They seem to have no humour.

Well, no sense of humour. You could say you could.

You could say somebody has got no sense of humour.

They're humourless, humourless.

I tried to have a joke with my new boss, but he's humorous or she's humorous.

Some people, some people don't like to joke.

Some people don't like to laugh and joke because they don't see it as being serious enough.

They see it as being trivial to have a have a laugh or a joke.

Yeah, and some people, if we meet people like that in life, don't we?

you will always imagine sort of judges to be humourless and in certain professions.

Well, yeah. Well, their job, their job involves being serious. Well that's it.

So you might say that that humorous somebody who is I mean, it's a derogatory term.

It's a negative term because nobody wants to really be described as humourless. No.

although I think sometimes people are afraid to, to enjoy themselves.

So maybe they're, they're afraid of losing control because laughter.

I think laughter is a type of of

reflex almost, that you can't control a little bit like sneezing.

So laughter is very similar to sneezing.

You can't control it sometimes. You can't keep it in.

So I think some some people are actually afraid of of laughing or having fun.

Dry humour, Mr.

Steve, British humour.

I think British humour.

It can be very dry, sarcastic or maybe blunt.

It is something that the it doesn't hide itself.

Dry humour, maybe a quip

or maybe a small comment that you make something dry but not obviously a joke.

it's often,

yes, it's sometimes dry.

Humour is said in a way that isn't indicating that it's humorous.

Yeah, it's it's said in your normal voice.

It's a it's a funny statement or a comment about something that is just said in your normal voice.

So you wouldn't set it up as a joke, because if you're going to tell a joke,

there's certain inflections in your voice and mannerisms that you would,

engage with.

Whereas if you've got a dry sense of humour, you're just saying it like your normal speaking voice.

Yes. And it's difficult because you need those signals, don't you?

If someone's telling a joke, you need those obvious physical signals, those telltale signs that somebody is telling a joke.

But if they don't do that and they do it in a very measured even way,

like if you were just having conversation, then you just describe that as a drive.

They're still telling a joke. Yeah, but it's called dry sense of humour.

And that's the reason why I put sarcasm there, because people who are sarcastic are normally just talking

as they normally would, but they are saying something really, maybe rude or offensive.

Yeah. Anyway, we've got to move on. Steve.

Sarcasm is often seen as poor humour because it's taking them.

It's, you know, it's that used to be described as very poor humour,

but American humour very much relies on sarcasm, even more so than than British humour.

Well, they borrowed it from us.

It's us.

We did. The dry humour, the subtle humour. It was us. It started it, it.

The American American humour is, is, is just imitating us anyway.

Steve. Steve, I'm just saying sarcasm of the way of offending somebody.

Yeah. Without directly offending them. But I actually.

Yeah it's anyway it's.

Yeah, yeah, let's move on. As usual. Mr. Steve has left me with lots of time.

That's sarcasm, by the way.

See, there's there's dry humour because actually it's the opposite.

Witty.

A person who is witty.

Now, I like to think that I, I'm witty.

I like to think that I have a natural ability to be funny.

Your mother used to always say that I'm witty.

Your sister quite likes my sense of humour.

Whenever we meet up with Mr.

Steve's sister, you can guarantee that she will be laughing very quickly.

Because I sort of say things and do things, and she's always having a laugh.

So a person who is witty can be described as humorous, funny or naturally funny.

Some people are, aren't they, Steve?

Yeah, some people are just naturally funny.

Witty? Yes. Witty. It just means you're always sort of

seeing the funny side of things.

Oh, well, you're able to make other people laugh. Yes, yes.

So the wit, the actual wit is, is the humour that you show

or you convey that that makes other people actually laugh.

They find you witty quite often, naturally funny.

Some people are naturally funny without even trying.

Here we go.

Types of jokes, Mr.

Steve, before we end doctor, doctor jokes.

So this is a type of joke, a very basic joke, a common, basic structure

for a joke is, of course, the doctor doctor joke.

So this basically is a person who goes into the doctor.

They will say something, and then the doctor will say something in return.

That is a humorous response to the thing that the patient has complained about.

I will give you an example.

Here is the the classic the classic doctor doctor joke coming up right now.

Doctor, doctor, I feel like a pair of curtains.

The doctor replies.

Oh, pull yourself together.

See, that's one for foetus. Yeah.

So pull yourself together

is what you do when you close the curtains.

You pull the curtains together.

But also we can use that phrase to mean a person who has to gain control of their emotions.

Calm down. Pull yourself together.

So we are using that phrase

in one way and another way, hence the humour that comes from it.

Doctor, doctor, I feel like a pair of curtains.

The doctor replies.

Oh, pull yourself together, he's saying, calm down.

However, it also means

closing the curtains and that is why it is a joke.

It is a joke.

Another type of joke.

Mr. Steve, before we finish.

Oh, I think we can have some fun here, Steve

pun. Go on then.

Oh, can you can you think of a pun?

not off the top of my head.

Okay, I will, I will show you one here. Here we go.

So a pun is a humorous use of a word.

So a word is being used in a humorous way.

Quite often.

Puns are not funny,

but they are still kind of humorous.

For example,

what do you call a man with a shovel on his head?

You call him Doug.

That is a pun.

Doug, of course, is the name of a male Doug

often used for for as being short for Douglas.

But also Doug is the past tense of Dick.

And of course, shovel is a type of tool that you use for digging.

So that is why it is funny.

Parable says that there's a phrase, no pun intended.

Sometimes you can say phrases, and the fat phrase is an obvious pun, but you didn't mean it to be a pun.

It ends up being so.

And you can say the phrase whatever sentence you're saying to somebody, and then you end it with, oh, no pun

intended, just what you what you're referring to is you didn't deliberately make that joke or that pun, which is a form of a joke.

It just happened because the way the sentence that you said was constructed.

Yes, you might, you might, you might break something.

You might drop a glass vase on the floor, and then afterwards you might say, oh,

I feel shattered after that

because you've just dropped the vase and it's shattered on the ground.

So you might say, oh, oh, that gave me a shock.

I feel shattered now, no pun intended.

So I'm saying that I don't mean to make a joke.

It just sounds as if I'm making a joke.

So yeah, it is interesting how humour can be used in so many different way.

Diane has got a good doctor. Doctor joke. Thank you Diana. Doctor, doctor.

Everybody ignores me.

The doctor says next.

Isn't that what is mine?

I'm sure I used that in one of my English lessons.

So there are many, many doctor jokes.

There are many jokes that can be described as a pun.

One last thing Faribault says mentioned the word satire.

satire, which is humour from, current events.

Politicians,

maybe maybe institution. Not.

Well, it's it's, it's it's actually a little bit more blunt than that.

It's just basic sarcasm.

You are being sarcastic towards the person.

Yeah, that's what I mean.

It's it's usually usually about political institutions isn't it.

Yeah.

Politics and or famous person institutions and things like that.

You know, the establishment. Yeah.

You know, making humour out of out of the establishment or a person

as well.

We can we can take the faults of a person and exaggerate them.

And then you are making fun of that person in a certain way, quite often politicians.

But you are right, Steve.

Politicians and politics quite often are the subject of satire.

The royal family, institutions, people that the legal profession, anything like that.

We used to be very good at satire here in the UK.

British satire used to be the best in the world.

Nowadays we don't do it.

Do you know why?

Because everyone is so afraid of offending or upsetting someone.

So you might say, over the years, Steve, certain types of humour have almost vanished or almost disappeared

because there are groups of people who go, oh, oh, oh, I'm, I'm offended by that political correctness.

Of course, is is is prominent these days.

And a lot of comedians are complaining that they cannot

do their profession anymore because they keep getting complaints

from people who maybe don't have much of a sense of humour and get easily offended.

Yeah, it's a it's quite a problem these days, to offend people if you make a joke.

snowflakes is the term. Okay.

So they're often referred to as okay. Yeah. It's,

Yeah.

Humour changes over time, goes out of fashion, comes back into fashion.

At the moment, it's very difficult to make jokes about certain things as we have, of course, of course.

Let's let's not forget that there are types of humour and jokes that are really offensive.

If you are referring to something that you can't control or you have no control over, so there is.

There is, of course, we often call it the the line, the line that you cross.

So imagine a line and you cross over that line.

It means you've gone too far.

Maybe that joke has gone too far.

Oh my goodness, we've gone over Caesar.
