Learn this super English phrase - 'Scratch the surface'. What does it mean?

One of the most interesting parts of learning

anything in life is discovering something new

that really grabs your attention.

Those first steps towards discovering a new thing

can be quite daunting.

However, it is important

to try and find out about new things

so as to why in your horizons.

Sometimes it might be necessary to return

to that recently discovered subject

so as to learn more about it.

That is where today's phrase comes in useful.

The first time you discover or begin learning

something that requires a return to that thing,

might lead you to say

that after your first investigation,

you have only scratched the surface.

This phrase expresses quite clearly

that further study is required

because you have only scratched the surface.

There is still much more to learn

about that particular thing.

It is necessary for you

to delve deeper into that subject

so you can fully understand it.

For example,

you might visit country,

but you only have a short time in which to look around.

You might say that you have only scratched the surface.

You have learnt some of the details,

but you need to return again to find out more about it.

You might say that learning anything

quite often requires more than one look.

Learning English is very similar to that.

This is the reason why I often say

that learning English takes time.

It is not something you can do quickly.

There is no shortcut to learning the language.

Knowing a few words

and sentences might not be enough

for you to communicate with other people.

You have only scratched the surface of that particular subject.

There is still much more for you to learn.
