A very busy week coming up for me

because it is Mr.

Steve's birthday on Friday.

It's also Valentine's Day on Wednesday

and it is pancake Day on Tuesday.

So a very busy week to come my way.

Some of that, of course, we will be seeing on the live stream and some of it we won't.

But I will be with you on Valentine's Day,

and I'm not sure about what we are doing on Friday for Mr.

Steve's birthday because we do have something planned for that particular day.

So Steve has decided to take the day off work on Friday

so he can celebrate his birthday in comfort.

Of course, yesterday it was a special day across Asia

because many people were celebrating the arrival

of the new lunar year.

So it is the Lunar New Year and now it is official.

We have entered

the Year of the Dragon.

we all like to have a celebration.

Any excuse for a celebration.

That's why I always go to weddings

It is a great expression.

so you might have the eggs, but it doesn't mean

all of those eggs will hatch out and have chickens.

So sometimes it is best to be patient

to wait before something happens.

because you don't really know whether something will go well or not.

So you might be making plans for the future.

However, it is always best not to count your chickens

you normally have some idea.

without knowing what the test will be about.

So I would say that

you have to make sure that you have learned enough.

You have an idea of the things you will be tested on.

Don't forget they want to know how well you can answer questions.

They want to know how well you can listen

to things being said.

They also want to make sure that you understand comprehension.

You can understand when someone is talking to you.

So the child's test

is not just testing one part of your English, it is testing

all of the different parts of

of the English language and also your own ability

to not only understand English, but

also to communicate in English as well.

So some of it will be in writing, some of it will involve listening and some of it will involve

speaking,

which of course is the one that a lot of people become very worried about.

Well, as I've said before, whenever you take a test,

you always have to have some sort of idea.

You have to know what you will be tested on.

It's a

little bit like when you are in school, when you are taught a subject

to quite often at the end of term you will have an exam

and normally the teacher will say,

these are the things that we will be testing you on.

So the exam that is coming up,

these are the things that you will be tested on.

These are the parts of the subject

that we will ask you questions about.

So it is very important that you have something in your mind

that allows you to know what the test will be about.

And as I said before, with the illness, quite often

it is writing and it is also listening.

And most importantly of all speaking,

they want to make sure that you understand English and

that you can respond.

And so

in English as well,

you do have to be very patient in life

and that is the subject we are talking about today.

Another subject I think we might have time to talk about is

a big one. It's a big subject.

Social change is changes in society,

things that have changed over the years.

So when you turned on the television, it would come on quite quickly.

But these days, you quite you often find that that modern technology

does not react instant only sometimes there is a slight

delay between doing something or activating something

and then the thing actually doing the task or carrying it out. Yes.

And you are quite impatient, especially with computers or your phone.

You sometimes expect that thing to to do it straight away.

But that's the old days of analogue digital.

Ironically, digital can actually be slower, it can be a little slower

or maybe there are processes that have to take place

before the thing you want can actually occur.

So it is strange.

So I think that's one of the reasons why you are impatient

when it comes to using technology,

but that is what we're talking about today.

Quite often in life, things

do not happen straight away.

So today we are like in a lot of human behaviour,

you might not even realise that it is,

it is taking place during your everyday life.

So there might be situations, Steve, where patience

becomes a very important thing.

But first of all, we'll have a quick look at the basic meaning patients.

of staying calm and

composed.

I like those two words, by the way calm and composed.

So we often think of composed as as something

that is being created or written like a piece of music.

So you compose a piece of music,

maybe you compose a poem,

but in this sense, to be composed

is to be calm, just like Mr.

Steve is now.

Yes, Somebody who is in control of their emotions,

You are composed.

If you compose yourself,

maybe you'll go in for a job interview and your who would want to go,

you're going to do a presentation or something

your own compose yourself,

calm down, clear your mind

and you will be relaxed,

calm, composed of people.

Often think of the British aristocracy,

somebody like the King or the Queen as being composed.

But they're not, you know, they're just smiling.

They're not overly emotional, a calm in their responses.

You know, somebody could shout at you and you would just remain calm

and not react in an overemotional way.

I think that's a good way of expressing it, especially with royalty, because at the moment,

the royal family here in the UK is having a lot of problems, all sorts concerning.

Well, I suppose there are there are the health issues and other things as well.

Relationship issues.

So yes, I think that's a very good way of expressing that.

Steve with being composed, having control self

control might also be

a very good way of describing the word composed.

Yes. If you want to imagine what compose looks like, just think of

when I say the Queen, I mean Queen Elizabeth the second.

But we all know people, certain politicians

who remain calm in a crisis in all conditions.

They don't let their emotions control their mind.

And we've all seen people giving speeches.

You know, Churchill would be another example of someone who was always composed.

I mean, he was always drunk, but he was always composed,

apparently, allegedly.

But, yes, think of the queen of England or the king Mother.

King.

You see our new king, Charles.

He's a bit more emotional, isn't he?

But he's always well, he's always composed,

generally speaking, Barack Obama there there was a composed politician.

Yeah.

Somebody that wherever he was interview mood in any way, whatever opinion he had to give,

whatever questions were fired at him, he remained calm,

in control, composure.

That's good.

Of course we are.

We often think of spiritualism as well when we talk about patients

because we often link those two things together

with certain types of spiritual belief as well.

Meditation might be a very good way of training yourself.

We will talk about that later on though, training yourself

to stay calm and composed yes, can I just quickly.

Yes, I did allude to King Charles

not being as composed as the queen and Christina.

lose his self-control.

That famous incident with the pen. Yes.

I think it's a constant this week.

Yes. Palmira, his a good question is composed the same as reserved.

No, they are different.

But I can see exactly where

you would think that some people can be reserved.

Yes, if you're reserved, it just means that you don't.

You don't like expressing yourself doesn't it.

You don't like.

Well yes, it's actually a very fine difference

To be composed of course means to, to have control over your self.

But if you are reserved it means you, you are quite often withdrawn.

So you, you don't let anyone see your true self.

So it isn't really the same as being patient.

Patience is waiting for something.

Being reserved means that you never show your true self.

Or maybe you don't show all of your inner feelings.

You don't reveal yourself.

You are quite reserved.

Yes, a reserved person could be thought of as introvert.

Yes, an introverted person.

So they just probably

may appear to be composed, but it may be that they're not inside.

They just don't want to express

themselves in a way that we would see an extrovert doing.

It's a different type of control.

Yes, it's

that's more to do with the character of somebody,

a reserved person is somebody who doesn't

talk about themselves, doesn't like it, wouldn't like

putting themselves forward for things or.

Yeah, whereas a composed person is

just somebody who's in the public eye, but is somebody who

who is got control over their emotions.

So we have something else here, calmness and composure.

We often put these two things together.

So when we talk about patience, we often talk about

calmness and composure as well.

So not only the way you behave, Steve, but also the way you appear,

the way you stand, the way you present yourself,

the way you appear to other people.

So there is a calmness from your character,

but also composure, which quite often is is a physical thing.

So it is interesting how those two things can can go together, staying calm and also staying

composed, as I mentioned a few moments ago, also being able to wait for

something is probably the most basic way

of defining or describing patience.

So when we talk about being patient,

you are having to wait for something.

You have patience.

Being able to wait for something to happen is to be patient.

You are waiting for something.

Can you think of a good example of waiting for something,

waiting for a bus?

Good one, waiting for your computer to open.

And we switched it on my Do you know my computer takes?

You won't believe this 5 seconds to start up.

that would annoy me, Mr. Duncan.

Five whole seconds.

That's not long.

I'm joking. Although some people know.

Having said that, Steve, some people don't want to wait for 5 seconds

nowadays because we want everything instantly.

So being able to wait for something, maybe, maybe you are a little bit

excited at the moment, Steve, because your birthday is coming up on Friday,

so maybe you are a little excited, maybe you can't wait.

I haven't really thought about it. Mr.

Duncan I think you get to a certain age

and you don't really get so excited.

I wouldn't say I'm neutral.

But normally that's if a person

is shutting themselves off from everyone, they might be closed.

Maybe a person who is closed might mice

might not let anyone into their life.

You would if you say you're you know, you'd say somebody was emotionally,

they would have emotional problems, I would think, if you were to describe them as closed.

Whereas a reserved person is

healthy, their emotions are healthy.

They're just they're not extrovert.

Then just naturally people who just don't like to be extrovert.

Yeah, you might you might say there are degrees of that.

So you might look at levels of of

being open and being closed.

So from one of those extremes, the top would be open.

An extrovert is always excited about life.

And they don't they don't really care about what people think about them.

And then you have the opposite, the complete opposite would be closed

where that person might not even like being around other people.

They might want to shut themselves away.

Rather like there are groups of people in in Japan

who completely shut themselves away from society.

They are completely closed off.

So this is a big thing.

Now in Japan, apparently a lot of young people are now choosing to just close themselves off.

They live at home with their family and they never go out.

They never leave the house and

and they are completely shut away.

So I think those are the extremes

from being open to being closed.

And in between, you've got all of those other types of behaviour as well. Yes.

How lonely.

Keeping your cool.

Yes, you could.

You could say that a person that was was calm,

a calm person or a composed person

is keeping their cool, calm, staying cool.

Couldn't you could almost use that as a synonym, would you say, Mr.

They are pretty much the same the same type of words.

There would certainly appear to be in this that same

that same meaning and and also definition.

Just like they're extrovert.

They go into parties

I think actually the average person

is quite reserved

and I know that that's a big step to take when I'm explaining this,

but I think the average person is quite reserved

in the fact that they don't want to stand out.

So they would rather blend in with the rest of society.

They would rather just be part of society

rather than at the front of the crowd and standing out.

So so that is always the misconception that people have about wanting to be famous.

I think most people don't want to be famous.

They want to stay hidden amongst the crowd so they don't stand out.

Yes, here's another one, Steve, We've got to move on because we are already it's

nearly 3:10 already being able to do something such as a task.

And this is another one that Mr.

Steve maybe sometimes you have difficulty with being able to do something a task.

Now I'm quite good at boring.

Are you sure about that?

Yes, it depends what it is.

Maybe one of it.

Okay, I'll put a scenario to you, Steve.

What if you are doing some work for your job?

So this is this is work related and maybe you have to go

through huge list of things

to to rearrange them or sort them out.

Or maybe you have to make certain changes to the list.

Can you do that if it takes a couple of hours?

Yes. I'm Quite good at like spreadsheets.

Putting spreadsheets together

depends what it is going through a list of customers

and phoning them one by one that takes a certain amount of patience.

But then I think you can be patient

if you are enjoying the thing that you're doing.

I think quite often when you become impatient, it's

because you're having to do maybe a boring task that you don't like doing.

Well, I suppose by definition a boring task is something

you don't like doing, but to others it might not be boring.

So some people hate spreadsheets

and would describe them as boring, whereas others don't and they're quite patient doing them.

But but yes,

I, I've lost my train of thought.

We're

we're talking about being able to do something for a long period of time.

yes. Yeah.

I mean, I can do, you know, I do lots of

singing practice and time and learning music.

It takes a lot of patience. Yes.

when we're talking about having patients to do things.

Maybe having patients to to learn

things, learn new things, learn new skills.

So I suppose learning certain early tapes,

a lot of patients, so being able to do something

that is boring or monotonous and that is quite a good word,

I suppose I should point that word out monotonous.

Something monotonous is something that seems to go on for a long time or something

that creates a sense of boredom,

something monotonous, maybe a sound.

So a sound or a noise

might be monotonous.

The sound that goes on and on without stopping

you might be going, that sound is so, so monotonous.

It won't stop. Please.

Something that's boring, something that creates a feeling of being

bored, I suppose.

What would be the best way of looking at it?

Here's another one, Steve.

Doing something tedious often requires a lot of patience.

So if you there are certain hobbies that people have.

Steve And I'm always amazed that they do them.

Can you think of a hobby or maybe something a person

might do in their spare time that that might,

that might require a lot of patience model making

people to do model, making knitting

or such as embroidery?

Yes.

might be something tedious.

Shall we explain the word tedious?

We'll do that in a moment.

So what we're talking about things that you might do.

Yeah, well, when I was a kid, Steve, I used to spend hours and hours

building the these little model planes aeroplane.

Right.

And it would take ages, so you had to glue them together.

Then you had to wait for the glue to go hard

and then eventually you would build the little model

and then you painted all of the detail on it, on the you took ages to do it,

doing all of that, putting the little things on there.

And sometimes it would take ages to do it.

Stamp collecting.

Do people still collect stamps?

Because I'm not sure if that even is a real thing anymore.

So I don't I don't know.

But there is a lot of money to be made in that.

Some of it is mind numbing.

That is a synonym for

something that is

some of this tedious is repetitive, boring.

But again, to some people it might not be

to others.

Something like building a model out of matchsticks.

Yes, some people do that, don't they?

They build these big models.

Somebody recently built the largest ever model

of the Eiffel Tower, really out of matchsticks.

And they were they'd broken.

They thought they'd broken the world record.

Louis might might have seen this.

I think they were in France, the biggest ever

matchstick model of the Eiffel Tower.

But it was disqualified because they used

the wrong sized matchsticks, apparently.

So I don't know how long it's taken this person to do this,

which must have been a very tedious task for somebody,

not for him, because he probably enjoyed doing it.

But for us it would seem monotonous, boring and tedious.

if you watched that in Paris, that somebody built

the largest ever matchstick model

of the Eiffel Tower, and

I think it was disqualified because of the wrong size.

Another thing I wanted to mention, cooking, so.

Olga Cooking is complicated.

There are recipes that require a lot of patience,

so I think that's one of the main reasons why I don't like cooking, because it is a slow process.

Sometimes you have to prepare a lot of things and it can be very time,

time consuming,

it can be tedious.

We have lots of people on here like Claudia that like to cook,

particularly when they're watching us.

For some reason.

Yes, I don't like cooking.

I find it

well, I think the problem is sometimes when you

don't have enough time, when you are trying to fit something

in, you've got a busy and you think, I've got to fit this in and this and this in.

And you you give these tasks

that you want to do a certain amount of time.

And I think then that puts pressure on you.

You start to rush and then that's when you become annoyed, an impatient if you've got lots of time.

But then on the other hand, if you've got lots too much time to do something,

you drag out that task.

So you need to find a happy sort of medium.

I do like time pressure to do things.

If I have a time pressure to do something that gives me the incentive, the motivation to do it.

So somebody says to me, You've got to do this.

By this time, I that motivates me to do it

because I like goals,

because that's that's how my mind works.

And I think being in sales for all these years, you're used to having a goal,

something to reach by a certain time.

Yeah, I think I think actually that's quite a good point because sometimes having, having

if you have pressure, I found quite often

it gives you more motivation to do it. So.

So yes, I think you are right.

Waiting for something to happen can be very frustrating.

Have you ever been in a situation where you are waiting for something to be delivered?

Maybe you've ordered something on the internet,

something lovely and nice and new,

and maybe you are for it to be delivered and and sometimes it seems to take forever,

especially on the on the day that that thing is supposed to be delivered to your house and.

Sometimes you just, you just keep looking at your watch

or maybe you go on the Internet and check to see where your delivery is.

Yeah.

So sometimes waiting for something to happen

can be very frustrating.

Olga says cooking by complicated recipes requires a lot of patience.

Yes, you see, for me, I if something takes because when you eat something,

it's very quick to eat food normally, isn't it?

We don't take. I mean, I eat very quickly.

And so if

for me, taking a long time to prepare, food is like a waste of time,

because I think to myself, I'm spending all this time like an hour preparing food.

It's like the Christmas meal.

It takes sort of hours, doesn't it?

You've got to put the turkey in the oven like a roast.

It's complicated.

You've got a time for the vegetables and then you eat it

in about 5 minutes so that annoys me.

That's I like things you can put into a slow cooker.

You throw everything in, takes you 10 minutes to throw it all in,

turn it on, walk, come back 4 hours later and it's cooked.

That's my idea of

cooking.

It's individual people. Some people love cooking.

Some people do it for a living.

They do it literally all the time.

But that's the other thing I see people sometimes doing jobs

and they seem to enjoy the job a lot.

But from my point of view, I would hate to do that job.

I suppose one of the things such as I

you see people doing things like I suppose going to sea

and and fishing.

So you see sometimes these huge ships

going off into the ocean and they're they're rocking

and they're being swept from one side to the other by the waves.

It's very dangerous.

It's cold, it's wet, it's unpleasant.

But but people choose to do that.

They say, you know what I want to do?

I want to live on a ship for two or three days at a time

looking for fish

fishing, being freezing cold and wet,

and maybe at some point possibly falling overboard and drowning.

I think sometimes you you

I often think it's amazing.

There are

I know people sometimes have to do jobs to earn money, but more or less,

there's always a job for somebody that somebody will like and somebody else won't like.

And like you said, that fishing, I mean, I never see myself becoming a fisherman and going out to sea.

But then the fishermen could probably look at me and say, well, I couldn't

sit in front of a computer of the day and,

go out and talk to customers about some product.

Yes. But I think what happens is that

I've often had this little theory or thought that, I mean, we're all human.

We can all pretty much do anything.

I mean, you know,

I could do a bit of brain surgery.

You know, you could do my job.

I could do your job. But we know.

But unless you've got an interest in it, if you've got a real interest in it,

or if you keep doing it a lot, you get better and better at it.

And I think when you do something a lot and you keep doing it, you just become better at it.

Like riding a bike or driving a car.

It's difficult at first and then you get used to it

and then it just becomes part of your life and you almost can't give it up.

It's like me not being able, you know, going back to work again.

It's because that

I wouldn't say I love my job.

I don't hate it, but

it's become like a habit over these years, many years.

And my brain obviously wants me to carry on doing.

And I think sometimes we get into our lives and our jobs and we've been doing it for so long,

it's difficult to to stop doing them, even if we don't necessarily like it.

It's just almost become a habit.

Yeah, that's it.

So learning maybe so This is very similar to what you've just said.

Learning a new skill requires a lot of patience.

It requires lots of patience and determination.

So. So we all have to start somewhere, whatever it is we are doing.

And I suppose the more skilled that thing is,

the more time you need to, to spend learning it.

But of course this particular thing takes in everything,

including maybe learning a new language.

So you could actually say that learning English

requires lots of patience and determination.

And this leads me to to the thing that I have on the thumbnail

of my lesson, which is a lot of people give up.

They they lose their patience or they give up,

they quit, they stop.

They say, No, I can't do this anymore.

No, it's taking too long.

I quit I'm not doing this anymore.

I quit.

So learning a new skill requires

lots of patience and also determination,

perhaps also to withstand something

without becoming angry or upset.

And I think this is, you know what?

I'm not going to say anything here.

I think, Mr.

Steve, you are the expert on this, able to withstand something

without becoming angry or upset or should I say in Mr.

Steve's case, the opposite of all that

I'm not like that. Mr. Good.

You know, sometimes we're more patient than others.

It depends on the task, by the way, and the time.

Monotonous, Yes, terms, as I thought.

Monotonous is more like never changing without change.

Dull, repetitive. Repetitive.

Yes, that you're right.

It is so a monotonous task.

It's something that is repetitive.

Yes. Doesn't change.

And you need patience to do it.

And you need patience to do it.

Of course, you're going to

have a monotone, as you indicate is somebody that talks

if someone's got a monotonous voice, you can see you can use that word in different ways, can't you?

A monotonous task is something that doesn't change.

If somebody has a monotonous tone in their voice,

it means that they always speak at the same level and they don't change like this.

It becomes very boring for people to to because you're

always talking like this and you never vary the pitch of your voice.

They've got a monotone voice.

That person's got certainly sound.

A single sound is a monotone that is so monotonous

is something that either goes on for too long or does not change.

So, Mr.

Steve, would you say that you can withstand things without becoming angry or upset?

And we mentioned technology earlier, Resilience.

Yeah. I don't think you are any different from anyone else.

I think a lot of people do become frustrated with with technology

and new types of technology.

We talked about this actually a while ago, about about things

always seeming to change, having the patience.

Okay, we'll go through these one by one.

Mr. Steve having the patience to wait.

so I saw you asking me a question.

Yes, I am.

I'm Do I have the patience to wait?

So while we're looking at different different things on the screen, it's in front of us

having the patience to wait, listen, travel, enjoy and overcome.

So wait.

So there might be a situation where you have to wait for something?

Yes. Like a letter to arrive.

Or for sometimes it annoys me

when the kettle takes a long time to boil water, wait for the kettle.

And I think the thing is, you know, you get things that, like you've mentioned with a computer that,

you know, I knew a computer ten years ago would take sort of 5 minutes, wouldn't it,

when you turned it on for it to all settle down.

Now it's 5 seconds.

But even I mean, mine takes about 10 seconds,

but I find myself getting impatient, even waiting for the 10 seconds.

Yeah.

You get used to things becoming.

You get used to something, and then you've become impatient.

Whereas before you were prepared to wait 5 minutes, it's like a kettle.

We've got a new kettle because our old one broke.

The old one used to take about five to boil.

This one only takes 2 minutes.

And yet I still found myself getting impatient waiting for it to boil.

So I go off and do other tasks.

Or when I put the tea bags in the tea,

I get impatient because I know I've got to leave it two or 3 minutes

and it,

you know, what am I going to do in those two or 3 minutes?

I've got to go.

I often go and do something else

to pass the time so that I don't get impatient.

So much stress.

Impatient is the opposite of patience.

Patient, isn't it?

We'll be looking at that.

And another patient So here is another one.

Steve listen listen, I'm not I'm not telling you to listen.

I'm saying that's the next word.

Listen.

So listening and I think this is again, another good example of having patience to listen

to what a person is saying or to listen to something

and then absorb all that thing.

So maybe if we're listening to something that's going on

for a long time like this live stream, maybe someone might say,

I don't have the patience to to listen to Mr.

Duncan's long live stream.

So listening is a form of of patience because you need it.

You need to be patient. Yes. To listen.

You do.

And quite often,

I mean, they were teachers in sales that the it

the customers should be talking more than you are because you should be listening to

what the customer is saying, not not just telling them what you want to tell them.

Yes, you should listening to them.

People don't like to travel. We especially this country.

I think here in the UK we are so spoilt because

our little tiny island is so small

we don't realise how small the UK actually is.

It's very, very tiny.

When you look at the comparison

between the UK or Britain

and then you look at other countries like Africa.

Huge.

Well, I know Africa isn't a country, a continent, but you know what I mean.

The continent and Australia is always the one that makes me

just speechless because

it's huge.

It is hard to appreciate just how large Australia is.

So travelling from one of Australia to the other

can take up to four, maybe five or 6 hours

from travelling, just just from one place to another.

So you have to spend five or 6 hours

on a plane just to travel from one city to another in Australia.

Whereas here, because our, our little tiny mossy rock in

the Atlantic is so small,

we can just travel very quickly

from place to place, but we are a little bit spoilt.

But even here in this country, Steve, we hate travelling, don't we?

Yes we do.

And I think it's because I think as well, particularly in the car, because we're a small island,

but we've got, you know, 65 million people

on what is a small space.

You often find that the roads of course are very crowded.

The trains are always light, but I wouldn't say they're always light.

We have the worst rail infrastructure

probably in many countries compared to many countries.

So you look at places like that, it is that.

But Steve, just me.

You can go to places like Japan where you can have 200

mile an hour trains that just run all the time

perfectly smoothly.

No delays, no hold ups.

And then and then China, of course, and then other countries as well.

European countries have very good rail services, but we don't like to travel

because quite often it takes too long.

And you are right, Steve, because there are delays.

Yes, I think so.

Yes, I think I think as Brits travel a lot more than we used to

when I was growing up, people

I mean, the emergence of travelling abroad is become much more popular now.

You'd have flights abroad to sunny climates.

We didn't used to.

I mean, I remember when I was young my father took us on a road trip

across Europe to France and Spain,

and it was it was like, you know,

to some of the people that we knew, it was that we were going to the moon.

The thought of driving and going across

to another continent was very alien to most people.

I mean, my parents, when they grew up, they never went abroad on holiday.

They just used to go up to the local, you know,

they just travelled to the coast somewhere, maybe half an hour away.

People do travel much more now than they used to,

but it doesn't mean it's a pleasant experience, of course.

So I think I think one of the things you need patience for is, is travelling

and another one is endurance.

Endurance.

So you might say that this is a very general word.

Endurance means just having the the ability or the strength

to to withstand or to take

the stress of something happening,

to endure and also overcome as well.

To overcome is to succeed in doing something or to to be patient to the point

where that thing has been done.

You will need patience to carry out a task.

You need to put some time into doing a certain thing.

And as I said earlier, learning English takes time and patience.

It can't be rushed.

As I said in one of my past English lessons,

many situations life require a certain

amount of patience,

I think. I think sometimes.

Is it possible, Steve, to be too patient?

I'm sure it is.

That always extremes of everything.

Yes. I think you can't be too patient.

I think that can be annoying.

Maybe.

Maybe if you're.

Yes, I think you probably can be too patient.

I think if someone was

was annoying, you and you didn't react to it

and you just kept

listening to them, it might annoy them eventually because they maybe want you to react.

But yes, I think I think it probably is.

We could be too patient because and you see, being too patient could be

could be seen as a form of inaction.

You might just keep

waiting for something, waiting for the right moment.

And the right moment may never come.

Maybe you need to act.

Maybe if you're too patient, you're seen as indecisive.

May be. Could be.

Yes. He who hesitates is lost

I believe the expression is so there's a great expression.

He who hesitates is lost.

So may be a person who holds back or has too self-control.

Might not want to do something.

You hesitate to do something.

So in that situation you might miss.

You might miss an opportunity to to to do something.

So there are many things in life that require a lot of patience.

A good example, Steve, is spending time with a boring

who won't stop talking about themselves.

We have found ourselves in this situation quite often with people

who they don't just talk to you,

they talk about you and they don't stop.

And even if you try to interrupt them or stop them, they do.

They just carry on.

So we've been in many situations like this, haven't we, Steve?

yes. And you're worried about saying something because you don't want to appear to be rude.

I think quite often we we don't react because we don't want to appear

to be rude or impatient.

So I think sometimes when

we're holding back about our real personality

so as not to offend or not to

not to look bad in front of other people,

whereas some people would just Yeah, they don't, they don't bother with that at all.

They just think.

And it is if you're boring, they'll tell you, yes, I see, you know

in polite society you, you don't know upset somebody because you might get a punch in the face.

That's it.

Sometimes it's good to know when to stop talking.

Sometimes it is good to know when to stop.

The opposite of patience is, of course, impatience,

impatience, impatience to be impatient.

A person who can't wait.

So a patient person, a patient person is

in the moment and they are calm and enjoying their day.

Impatience, of course, is the opposite.

It means that person cannot wait.

They always want more.

They always want something new and they don't want to wait for it.

They want it now. Now they want it.

So the opposite of patience is impatient.

Yes, you are such an impatient man.

His impatience to get married.

So you are two different ways of using the word impatient,

the impatient man and a person's impatience

is the actual name of that feeling.

So generally speaking, we are looking at being calm,

relaxed, patient, or you are a person who cannot wait.

You are impatient.

You always want everything now.

And maybe that's one of the things has changed over the years

in society with people wanting things straight away.

By the way, the word patience derives from the Latin

word for suffering.

Yeah, few people have mentioned that.

Isn't that strange, though? Yes.

You wouldn't think that suffering would be related to patience,

but it is the state of

endurance.

So when we talk about endurance,

we are talking about something you are having to to accept.

But maybe you don't want to accept it.

You have to suffer that particular.

But in its modern

sense, of course, patience means to be calm and relaxed.

So I think it is very interesting that that's how those

or that particular word came about.

A patient person or a person who is patient has patience.

So a patient person or a person

who is patient has patience.

And I think that is the best way of describing

today's subject, which was all about being calm

and relaxed and

patient

calm.

because I think people have become more impatient over time.

So you might say that that would be one of the things that has changed over recent times.

We are taking a look at social changes in a moment

and the way in which things have altered

and the way in which things have have changed.

All of that coming up in a few moments from now.

It is there. And it's wonderful.

It makes it makes all the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Today are looking at a very interesting subject.

We've done patients and now we are looking at social change, things that have changed over the years.

And you might be surprised, Steve, how how much things have changed in society.

Now, from my point of view, I'm probably going to talk a lot about, the UK,

but you might also say that many other countries are also affected

by by these types of social change or, social changes

when we talk about lots of different things that have changed.

A good example is this one, Steve.

Fewer people

are now

getting married.

Marriage, apparently more and more people are saying,

I don't want to devote my life to one person.

I don't want to get into a relationship

where everything is binding and holding us together.

So a lot of people now are choosing not to get married.

So that might be seen as a big social change because we both grew up

at a time where we're not being.

But living together was actually quite a bad thing, wasn't it?

Well, yes, it used to be.

I mean, when I grew up living in sin,

which of course is is a very sort of religious

idea, that if you are not married,

then it used to be described

in this country as living in sin

because it was seen as against your religion or against God.

I'm not debating that.

But but now, obviously, since the revolution in the sixties is

really a lot of people now

getting married and

having relations, shall we say

You are married, but it isn't a problem

whether or not even getting married or not even getting married.

And according to something I read today Mr.

Duncan in the paper, they did a survey about people having sex

and apparently it's never been so low.

Well, the amount of people having sex

and the frequency with which they have it is the lowest ever recorded.

But then that could be biases in the results.

But but yes, social changes.

And that of course, they were putting this down to social changes.

Pandemic people on their devices

all the time not wanting to go out.

You can entertain yourself at home a lot more on the computer, can't you?

Yeah, I think I think maybe there's a case where people want to make love with their phones or

their computers more than their partner or or maybe it's just too much,

too much work to to do it nowadays.

I'm I'm so glad, Steve,

that I'm not growing up in my twenties now

because I think it would be a nightmare When we were younger, when we were young people,

we didn't really have to have to worry about social media or anything like that.

We just we just went out.

What you would do is just open the door of your house

and then and then go out and that's it.

That was your social media.

Your social interactions were, were in 3D

three dimensional with other human beings.

So there wasn't really any any alternative, to be honest.

You had to you had to open the door and walk and go somewhere.

That's how we met.

We met in that exact situation.

And most people, you know, have, you know, decades ago used to more

or less people in the same village or town that they are on the same street.

And they wouldn't look very far for a partner.

Boris Now, of course,

I think people's expectations are higher, of course,

in relationships, in finding that perfect person.

And of course it's much easier to get divorced now as well.

And when you get divorced,

the law seems to

very much favour the woman

in that that you

the man has to give up a lot of his property, shall we say, and.

And money.

Well, it's not a divided.

Yes, it is.

It is divided.

But there's always seems to be a bias in favour of value, and we won't go into that.

Well you're Gary, you're the one going into it Steve.

Yes, because I think that is putting off a lot of men getting married

because they're worried that they might marry somebody or vice versa the other way round.

That could be

so easy to get divorced. Now.

Yeah.

And thus, I mean, I literally know people who are saying,

you know, I think I'll get divorce, I'll get I've had conversations with friends

and they, you know, they've been with their partner of 20 years and

they're in their fifties and they just I don't want to work anymore.

I'll just don't really love them anymore.

Get divorced, get half the money and I'll be I'll get a flat to myself and I'll be all right.

That's it.

Well, that also might be another one of the social changes where you can get married,

but also break the marriage off or break the relationship in any time,

which, of course, might be putting people off, getting married in the first place

because there seems to be no value in getting married.

There seems to be nothing that says that that is the thing we should be doing

because there is no there is there is no longevity.

I think that's a good word, longevity.

So you get together and then you expect to spend the rest of your lives together.

But nowadays there doesn't seem to be any point in getting married

because you can break the marriage at any time.

So it's almost like a circle in a way.

And the other thing people are doing less is having children as well.

So I suppose it's very similar to what you just said about people not wanting to

to do the the beast with the two backs.

So I suppose because of that, there are fewer kids

and that is becoming a bit of a crisis in a lot of countries around that, around the world.

This demographic change where there are a greater proportion

of elderly people in society and less pay babies.

You know, a lot of elderly people for longer and longer because of of health

benefits due to technology and vaccines or whatever

new medication is keeping people alive for longer.

But at the other end, people are having less children because

they just don't want children.

Or there might be policies in their country that have restricted them,

which we know has happened in certain rather large countries.

Yeah, but in China they did it, but now they've they've got rid of, they've got rid of it.

But of course there's a bit of a bit of a lag now a lot of countries do there is, there is a

they are describing this particularly in the Western world, but I think it's all over the world.

This reduction in birth rate

compared to

people, elderly people living longer and longer.

And of course you need young people in society

to pay for the pensions and the health care that the older people. Yes.

So that the older people.

Okay, who's going to pay for that?

So again, there are big social changes taking place.

We're missing the point of why aren't people having kids?

Why while the course

they used to have, there are several reasons why people used to have children know what

we know why they have them, but why aren't they having them?

Why are they saying, look, let's not have kids?

Well, I don't know.

I well, I know why I don't want kids, but that's a different thing altogether.

Yeah, well, even there

even nowadays that doesn't matter because people can adopt.

You can have a surrogate mother.

So someone will will have their baby have your baby on behalf of you.

But it is amazing how many people in relationships or even in marriages.

No, I used to know a couple of people,

but well, for people in in marriages, not not together, but they're in separate marriages.

But they both decided not to have children.

And I am going to say this. They admitted

that the reason was purely selfish.

Yeah,

they didn't want the hassle.

They didn't want the work.

They didn't want to spend money on the child.

And it is a very expensive thing, isn't it,

if you have a child suddenly expense.

Well, it's a bit like us deciding that we don't want to have a dog

because it's going to be a lot of work and it will restrict our lives when we want to go on holiday.

I mean, as you say, Mr.

Stone, I've got friends who've never had children, and the reason that they don't want them

is they say, well, because just we want to enjoy our lives as.

A couple.

Varies.

Of course if you went back, if you go back 50 years,

if you didn't have children and you could have them, it would be seen as being very indeed.

So unless you had a problem that you couldn't have children

and of course

certainly certain religions, you

you it's expected that you have children,

which I think is still very much in force in certain religions,

but it's but certainly in

sort of a lot of Western societies now,

it's there isn't there isn't that social pressure to have children.

They used to be a lot of social pressure.

Yes. To have children.

But there isn't so much anymore or that isn't there is still in certain.

But what I'm saying.

So the reason is a selfish one, and I think most people will.

Yes. Well, most people know.

I know. I know what you're saying, but is that selfish?

No, no.

They've they've said they've used the word themselves.

Well, yes.

yes, yes.

We're being selfish.

We don't want kids.

Yeah, but that they using the word selfish.

But are they they should they say that.

Yes. Is it so is it selfish not to have children.

They're saying they're being selfish, but I mean, why should you have them if you don't want them?

Yes, obviously.

But there is there is a social.

What's the word I'm looking for?

Maybe a social duty

to have

children, because you've just literally said there are too many elderly people.

We're living longer.

You and I, Steve, you and I might be around

in 30 years from now.

We might still be here, still doing this, still doing this so that there will be a very elderly Mr.

Duncan and the very elderly.

Well is very similar to how he looks now

that it seems they don't do that.

They've crossed Steve, Steve, don't do that, Steve.

I'm just joking.

Might be elderly people watching and some I'm detaining with stock it. Yes.

I mean, I think what a lot of saying is we could be here in 30 years from now,

but there are no people coming up

who are younger and we need someone

to take care of us because we don't have kids.

So we're going to need someone to come around and care for us to look after each other.

Mr. Duncan, I mean.

Well, no.

Well, not if we're both old around where we live.

People think it's odd if you don't have a dog.

That's how strange society has become.

Now, that's the social change in England.

Now, if you don't have a dog, people that you're a bit strange.

I'm not joking.

We've literally had conversations with people that you don't have a dog.

Why not?

What's wrong with you? You know, I see this

as though there is something wrong with you.

I mean, before it would be you haven't got a baby.

What's wrong with you now?

It's you haven't got a dog.

What's wrong with you?

But it's very interesting.

Yes, but maybe it's still very wrong with it with kids.

If a person wants to have a child, maybe you think it's unusual.

So it's actually the opposite way round. So.

So they'd rather have a dog than have a little tiny human being to take care of.

I do have a couple of friends, man,

a man and woman that are married.

by the way.

Thomas A question earlier about civil partnerships.

Yes, they very much are recognised in the UK as they are in most

Western countries.

You're find most of Europe would accept that.

I am indeed. Mr.

Duncan Civil partnership there is.

It exists, Yeah.

They have the same basically exactly the same rights as a married married couple would

in the UK, as they do in many countries.

But yeah, maybe not in yours though.

Maybe.

Maybe you could take us back to back to the original point.

Yeah.

Yes, that's it.

So sometimes, I mean, it used to be you just.

It was automatic if you were married.

And of course it certainly I can't talk for other religions,

but certainly Christianity, certainly in in Catholics,

it's very much if you get married, you are expected to have children or at least

that was very much

you get married in the eyes of God and you get to procreate.

That was the expectation, I think.

But I think that is it, isn't it?

It is.

It is setting

a kind of level

that will be in place because you always need a new generation.

Come along. But but but now.

Now a lot of people are saying we that we're going to have kids.

We're just going to enjoy our money.

We're going to make money between us.

We're going to have a lovely life.

And then when we get older, we're going to have lovely holidays and enjoy our time.

But there might be a point where they could regret that

and suddenly realise there's no one to take care of them.

So because you often assume or you want to think

that that your

children, or at least one of them will care of you when you're older.

Yeah, well, it's, it.

I mean. Yeah.

You don't have to say life was much simpler, wasn't it, 50 years ago?

100 years ago. And simpler.

Life was simpler and your life expectancy was lower.

Okay, so, you know, people now

see the rest of the world.

There's how many billions of us on the planet.

People don't see the necessity necessarily for having children

because they see that there's there's already a lot.

There isn't.

I think this is like a biological thing.

And I think they've

identified this trait in animals.

When there is a a high population,

then automatically you start to see parts of you,

you, your body starts to switch off

and you don't necessarily think that you need to bring children into the world

because you can see that there are plenty of children around the world and plenty of other people,

and that probably if you were to have any, you might be affecting the survival rate.

Yeah. So better.

So you think sometimes things are kicking in.

We don't even understand.

Instincts are kicking in that we don't fully understand.

So It's better to have a short life.

I've 20 kids.

Well, people used to have

lots of kids because they knew that, you know, half of them would die.

Well, that's it's was what I call the nesting syndrome.

The nesting syndrome is what birds have, which is where they

they lay seven or eight eggs, but maybe only four or five of them will will hatch out.

And then after that, only three will survive to leave the nest.

And then after that,

if they are lucky, maybe one of them

will survive after flying from the nest. So.

So it is basically same sort of thing that that's kind of nature taking place, I suppose.

But it's very it's very interesting to see these things changing.

But of course, what we're at it from a UK point of view,

but around the world there are a lot of these things are still going on the same.

Yeah.

So it, it does vary from where you are

and which particular country you are living in. Mr.

Steve Can you believe it?

well, Olga makes a lovely point that it's great that we have the ability

to freely choose who we want to live with nowadays.

Well, at least in most free societies,

They can't.

They can.

They can be fed too much.

Gary One of the biggest reasons why fish die

when you have a little fish in a

or fish tank, one of the most common reasons for them dying

is because they eat too much food, because people often will put too much food

in the in the tank or in the the small bowl.

And so the fish will eat and eat and eat and eventually

it will just eat itself to death.

So it is a very common problem with fish.

They will, if you keep them in a small container, they will eat

anything you put in, even if they're not hungry and then they die.

That's a lovely what a lovely way to end today.
