This is very unusual indeed.

What is going on?

Well, first of all, I will show you out of the window.

because we are now live here on YouTube.

And yes, it is Saturday.

And I am coming to you live from the birthplace of the English language,

which just happens to be, you know, where it is.

It's England.

We are back together again and it is a little bit unusual.

Before anyone panics, it isn't Sunday.

Don't worry, it's Saturday.

I hope you are feeling happy today. I'm not too bad.

I think I've been talking too much over the past couple of days

and my voice is a little bit sore, to say the least.

I am a trooper.

That is a great expression that we use in English.

If a person continues despite the fact

that they might feel unwell, maybe they are under the weather,

maybe they have a cold or something is making them feel unhappy.

They carry on.

They are a trooper,

just like a soldier marching forth

across the front line towards the enemy.

I talk about English.

You might say I am an English addict.

And today we are here.

I'm doing some extra life streams this month.

And the reason is because February is a short month.

So I think we have 29 days this month.

But of course, we still lose

two days.

So for the average month it is 31 days.

So I thought it would be fun to do some extra livestreams

and that is what you are watching right now.

So I'm with you on Saturday. There is no Mr. Steve.

I have a good reason for that, because Steve

this afternoon is appearing

in the matinee of the show he is doing.

I went along to see it last night.

So here is Mr. Steve.

I will show you what I saw last night.

There it is.

So there is Steve singing with his company,

not his company, as in his work company,

but a group of people who come together to sing and perform.

So Mr.

Steve, last night was appearing in the Gondoliers.

Unfortunately, I can't let you hear the sound

because of copyright problems.

So there might be some issues with copyright.

Even though Gilbert and Sullivan, who actually wrote the Gondoliers.

It's been out of copyright

for many years, but of course sometimes the license for music

can continue for much longer, so I'm not going to risk it.

I'm not taking a risk.

But there is Mr.

Steve singing in his rather nice red cummerbund.

The thing that goes around

his waist is called a cummerbund,

and I think I'm not sure which song Mr.

Steve is singing there, but that that is what he was doing last night.

And I was there in the audience watching him sing his little heart out.

And I have to say, it was good fun,

even though there were some people there who had decided

to set up some microphones and speakers.

And unfortunately, sometimes the sound

went a little bit wrong.

There was a little bit of something we call feedback,

which is where the microphone picks up

the sound coming out of the speaker.

And what happens is you have something called a feedback loop.

It continues forever and ever.

But not just that.

The sound also increases until all you have

is a very loud squeal

or screech feedback.

It is something you should always avoid having.

If you are recording something live, maybe you have some speakers

and also some microphones.

You have to be very careful not to get feedback.

It can be rather nasty.

So that's what Steve is doing today.

But don't worry, I am with you tomorrow as well.

So it is a full weekend of English addict,

not just today, but also tomorrow as well.

We are looking at opposite today.

And I thought it's an interesting subject because in English quite often

we will express things in positive ways or negative ways.

Sometimes you can use words

both positively and negatively,

sometimes by using other words in the sentence,

but also by the way, you say things intonation.

So the way in which you say something can also change the meaning

or the way in which a particular word in English is being used.

I have to say it does feel weird being here on Saturday.

It's a very strange feeling.

I think it's been a long time since I was with you on Saturday,

but of

course tomorrow I'm back with you as well, so don't panic.

I want to say again, there is a live stream tomorrow 2 p.m.

Just before my live stream began on my iPad,

there was a little commercial that played,

and sometimes you can have different types

of advertisement on YouTube.

And I have to say

the one that was on just before I started

was all about quite, quite a big subject,

something that can happen when you get to a certain age.

I do believe

that this particular thing does exist.

We often talk about different types of prejudice.

When we talk about prejudice, we mean a prejudgement of a person

or group or a particular thing.

You are judging something without knowing anything

about that person or that thing.

Prejudice can

come in all shapes and sizes.

Maybe a person's race, their skin colour,

maybe a particular part of the country that they come from.

So we even here in the UK, within the UK,

because the UK is made up of different parts,

we have England, Scotland, Wales

and you might find that there are different ways

of speaking, different accents and sometimes it is possible

to have prejudice, prejudice against a way someone speaks

or the sound of their voice, or may be where they come from.

So quite often you might find that there is a sort of divide

between the North and the South.

Quite often the South will be the more prosperous area,

or at least it will appear to be prosperous or better.

But in

reality of course there is good and bad all over the place.

So quite often prejudice is a thing that can get in the way.

It can block

the way a person thinks about other things and other people.

Another type of prejudice is ageism.

A person's age age.

So maybe when you are young, you feel as if you have the world at your feet.

Everything is there for the taking when you are young,

the summers seem to last forever.

The years go by so slowly

and it feels as if you will be young forever.

And quite often the attitude of a person who is much younger

or very young towards older people

might be negative.

A certain type of prejudice, younger people

feeling that older people are useless or have no worth.

And it does happen.

And I think generally, quite often in society

there is a definite divide between young and old,

especially with the attitude

between young people and older people.

But of course you can also have the opposite

where older people, people who are older

might also have prejudice against younger people.

So I'm not saying that it only works one way.

It can work both ways.

Both ways.

But I think ageism is a problem in society.

We often see people over a certain age as having very little value,

which I do not agree with.

Everyone has some sort of value in life,

but I think there is a type of prejudice that can happen

between young people.

And when I say young, I don't mean teenagers,

although they are in that group.

I mean people in their twenties

or thirties or even in their forties.

They might look

at people who are much older than them as being

second class citizens, or maybe not as valuable.

But I think everyone has some sort of value.

And of course these days, because people are living longer

and now we look at old age

in many ways as being a little bit more positive.

So we used to say that life begins at 40,

but nowadays a lot of people are finding

because our life span is much longer,

people are enjoying life for longer as well.

So these days instead of saying life begins at 40,

a lot of people are saying

life begins at 60

or 65 or even 70.

There are many people there are many people around the world having adventures,

people who are much older than me, ten,

15, or even 20 years older than me.

And they are having all sorts of adventures.

A friend of mine looks travelling

and he is in his early eighties

and he will often go off on a lovely holiday

or go travelling to different parts of the world and have adventures

and he is in his early eighties.

So you see it doesn't necessarily mean

just because you are old, you have no value or your life is over.

It is not,

it isn't.

But there might be situations where some people will look.

They will have a certain type of prejudice

against those who are much older.

So that is the commercial, the the campaign

which is running at the moment here in the UK.

The governments sometimes do this.

They will bring forward certain types of campaign to try and make people

more aware of certain issues.

And I think this is a very important one to be honest.

So I feel actually is it is a good thing to focus on

to talk about the attitude between young and old.

But of course there are many other prejudices which occur in life.

Maybe the divide between those who have a lot of money or are wealthy

and those who don't like me.

So you see,

I come from a very modest family.

Very modest.

We lived in a council house.

We didn't have much money.

My mother and father had to both work.

Despite the fact that my mother was disabled, she still had to go out to work

because of the family.

We had to.

We had to make sure all my parents had to make sure that there was enough money

because there were three kids in the family.

So you can see

that there might be instances or situations

where someone might look down upon a certain group.

And that happened at school.

So when I was at school, because I lived

in the council house, we didn't have our own house.

My father didn't have a car,

we didn't even have a colour television

until about 1983,

and everyone else had had one for years.

So sometimes people would make fun of me at school because I lived in the council house,

so we had to pay rent to the council and my parents both worked

and we certainly were not wealthy.

But I do know from my own experience

that there was a certain type of prejudice,

especially between kids, teenagers and kids.

Children can be quite mean

and sometimes they don't realise

how mean or nasty they are being.

So it does happen from time to time.

Children can be cruel, but also people

who are much older can be cruel as well

in many different ways.

Today we are looking at opposites,

opposite words, opposite meanings,

the way of expressing opposites.

When we go one way, we might decide to go the opposite way.

It happens physically.

We can go one way and then go the other way.

We are going the opposite way.

Of course, when we are communicating in English, the same thing can happen.

We can use words that mean one thing,

but we can also use words that mean the opposite of that particular thing.

In fact, is what we are talking about today.

There is always something new that

pops up in my head.

And of course, sometimes you have to repeat things.

So maybe sometimes it is necessary

to repeat certain subjects.

But I have to be honest with you.

Quite often

there is always a new idea that pops up in my head.

So no, I don't.

I don't ever I never, in fact

run out of things to say on the live chat.

I don't think it's ever really happened to me.

we are looking at using opposite words.

When we talk about opposite words, we mean words that are the reverse or

as the name suggests,

opposite, but things that go the other way.

So we often talk about direction.

Maybe one person is going that way and the other person is going that way.

We can say they are going in opposite directions.

The same thing is true with English words.

There are words that can go one way and of course there are words

that express the opposite meaning.

We will look at some of them.

I'm sure you can think of quite a few as well by your self.

I think so.

So in the live chat today, we have lots of people joining in.

for every defining word there is quite often an opposite.

So quite often, very often

even that word has an opposite.

For example, the opposite of often is

seldom

opposite of often is seldom something that happens often

and something that happens seldom, almost never.

So there straight away, a very good example of opposite words.

An opposite word is often referred to as an antonym.

An antonym is an opposite.

It is the opposite.

So when we say anti, we are literally saying opposite

an opposite word.

Of course, if a word has a similar meaning,

we can call it a synonym.

The word antonym derives from Greek

and literally means against name.

So you are having an anti name.

It is against that thing

up becomes down,

up and down are antonyms.

They are opposites.

So that is the reason why we express it in that particular way.

Common opposite words will often express either a positive or a negative meaning.

This is true common opposite words.

So you can have words that mean something positive

and something that means something negative.

Quite often there are words that can take you in a good direction

or a bad direction, depending

on what it is you are trying to express.

And that is why opposite words

are quite interesting when we talk about them.

Not all opposite words are necessarily good or bad.

Their definitions depend on the situation.

So as I just said, a word that you want to use

to express something positive, then of course you will use a positive word.

Sometimes you might have to go the opposite of that positive word

and use a negative word instead,

as we will see later.

It is also possible to use the way you say something

to express opposites.

As I just said, down is the opposite of up,

but it is not always used as a negative opposite.

So there are ways of using those words in sentence says,

but they are not necessarily bad.

There is a fly buzzing around annoyingly,

that is a very negative thing.

So here are some examples.

For example, you might go down to the shops,

so that's not necessarily a negative thing,

even though we can use it as a negative thing.

We often see down, down as being negative.

But you can also use it to say that you are going in a certain direction.

You might go down to the shops, so you go from one place to another,

you go down the road, you go down to the shops,

you might also trip up and fall.

So quite often up is used positively.

However, in this particular sentence,

the one you can see at the bottom, it is being used negatively.

You trip up, you are losing control of yourself, you trip up.

So quite often we can use words

that appear negative or are often used negative light,

and we can use them in a positive way.

And then of course, there are other ways of using those two words.

You might feel down and moody,

so you might often find the word

down is used more in a negative way.

You might feel down and moody,

You might pick up your dog,

you pick up your dog, you are collecting your dog.

Maybe you have to go to the vet because your dog is having something done.

Maybe your your mail dog

is having something

cut off.

it can happen.

In fact, it does happen.

You might pick up your dog from the vet's.

You might pick up your dog from the ground

because you want to carry your dog.

So it is possible to use down and up

quite often

sit and stand,

for example, are opposites, but both express

positive and negative meanings in a sentence.

So we might use the word sit

and stand negatively and positively.

So once again, it does depend on what the situation is.

So opposite words do not always reflect a positive or negative

meaning in the same way that is to say opposite words

can sometimes change their meaning

from positive to negative

and the other way round

down can be direction,

as can up, down and up.

So to be honest with you, neither of those

things are necessarily positive or negative.

However, they are still opposites.

You might move down,

you might push down,

you might sit down, you can move up,

you can push up,

you can sit up,

you can stand up like I do.

I stand up all the time.

Now, I used to have a chair here in the studio,

but these days I often stand up.

In fact, that's what I'm doing now.

I always present my live streams standing up.

So I am standing right now on my feet.

Another example is over and under, over, under.

They are opposites and can both be used

either positively or negatively.

We can look at an example

to overspend is negative.

So over in that particular sense

means you've done something too much, you overspend,

you have spent too much money.

So if a person overspends,

it means they spend too much money.

Maybe they spend all of their money on lots of useless things.

Or maybe if you have a budget,

a certain amount of money, you spend too much money,

you go over that amount, you overspend.

this fly is going to really annoy me.

I hate it when a fly is buzzing around me in the studio.

It is so distracting.

And then of course, you can get over something

to get over something means to recover.

Maybe you have an illness, you are ill, unwell,

but you get over that particular thing.

So in that sense it is positive.

We are saying that we have recovered.

Maybe you have had a shock, something that has shocked you.

Eventually you will recover,

you will get over that particular thing.

You recover.

And then we have uses of under

to under achieve is negative

a person who under achieve leaves is a person

who doesn't do as well as they could or should

you under achieve it is a negative.

And then of course we have the opposite of what we mentioned a few moments ago.

You can underspend.

So that means you do not go over the limit.

You stay under the limit

of the amount of money you can spend.

You underspend. And

sometimes we have to underspend

because we have no choice.

Yes, it is possible for context of a word

or its opposite, to change from positive to negative.

It is very possible for that to happen and it can happen.

Of course, we can alter the emotion of a word by adding

or changing the sound or the intonation.

So this for me is a very interesting part of learning English.

It is a part of learning English that is fascinating,

and that is when we are speaking, when we are talking,

sometimes we can express words

by using certain sounds,

and quite often the sound that we use can show

whether or not that word is being used

positively or negatively, even if the word

is positive or negative, we can sometimes

use intonation the way we speak.

Here's a good example

two sentences.

great.

great.

great.

great.

great.

great.

So the word great is often seen as positive.

However, in those sentences, the intonation of my voice

is leading you to understand

that it might not be necessarily positive.

great.

great.

Maybe you go out of your house in the morning and you discover that

your car has a flat tyre just

and you are late for work.

You might say,

right.

It's being used negatively, even though

in the grammar it sounds as if it's a positive thing.

So intonation, the way we say things

can quite often lead to word choice.

Having opposite meanings or sentences.

We can use it negatively or positively.

For example

maybe you say that that is too bad.

That is too bad.

Maybe you hear some bad news that is too bad.

Perhaps you want to be sarcastic.

And that is something we will look at in a moment

sarcasm being sarcastic.

We often use sarcasm

when we are being rude.

Or maybe if we want to make a point towards someone,

we are trying to express a certain thing towards someone

that is too bad.

Maybe someone who you don't like

phones you

and they say that they can't come to your party, but really you are quite relieved.

You are pleased that they are not coming.

So you might say that that is too bad.

that's too bad.

You're being sarcastic.

So even though the sentence sounds negative, you are actually pleased

that that person isn't coming.

Sarcasm is something we use often

in Britain.

British people, English people

especially, can be very sarcastic.

We like to use sarcasm

when we are trying to make point

or express a certain feeling.

Sarcasm often changes the meaning of a sentence or word

to show annoyance or frustration.

You will often use sarcasm.

And I think.

I think the English can be very sarcastic.

We are very good at it.

The type of humour that we have in this country.

Saka sum is often used to

be sarcastic towards someone.

Here's a good example.

Maybe your friend comes late

and you have been waiting on the corner of the street for them

for a very long time and you are looking at your watch.

Where is this person?

Why haven't they arrived yet?

And you are quite angry.

You feel frustrated because they are late,

but when they arrive you might be sarcastic.

So even though the sentence sounds positive,

you are actually saying it in a negative way.

good.

You are on time as usual.

You can tell by my voice I'm being sarcastic.

I don't mean it.

I'm actually saying something positive,

but the sound of my voice is saying something negative.

good.

You are on time as usual.

So the other person

will understand that I am actually annoyed.

Sometimes sarcasm will take

a positive sentence and turn it into something negative.

Maybe.

Maybe a person who always falls asleep

or maybe if they they like to sit

in their favourite chair and go to sleep

and maybe you come back home and they are fast asleep,

you might say, how nice to see you awake again,

but they are not awake, they are fast asleep.

So you are being sarcastic.

You are saying this thing to someone who often falls asleep.

How nice to see you awake again.

How nice to see you here on time.

Very good. Yes.

you shouldn't have.

You shouldn't have rushed here.

There was no need to rush.

But of course, the other person didn't

rush because they are late.

The person who keeps falling asleep all the time.

You are being sarcastic because they always fall asleep.

Please tell me more of your brilliant jokes.

Please tell me more of your brilliant jokes.

What you are actually doing is telling that person that their jokes are terrible.

You say it to someone who tells awful jokes.

Please, please tell me some more of those wonderful jokes of yours.

Go on.

You are being sarcastic towards that person.

To be sarcastic is to turn a positive comment

against someone.

The context

is being changed because of the way

you say that thing and this happens a lot in English.

And this is something that I've mentioned in the past.

When you are using English, sometimes it is

very good to listen to what a person is saying,

but also listen to how they are saying it as well,

because sometimes they might be sarcastic.

It does happen.

Not just English people,

people from the US.

They can also quite sarcastic as well.

Common opposites in English.

Now I'm sure for many people this will be quite obvious,

but I'm going to put it on the screen anyway before I finish.

So for those who want to look at some very quick

opposite words,

the most obvious ones, when we look at opposites

and quite often these also will be used

positively in green and negatively

in red, you have happy,

sad, good,

bad, creates

terrible big

smile.

It is worth mentioning that big and small

are not necessarily positive or negative,

so a small thing might be good,

a big thing might be bad,

a big gift you might receive a big gift

that is good.

But then you might find

I'm not going to say that,

but you might find there is something wrong with you.

And instead of that thing being small, it is big.

That can then be negative.

So big and small are not necessarily

positive or negative.

They can change depending on the context.

And of course we have bright

and miserable

something that is happy, something that is cheerful, something that is jolly,

it makes you smile, is bright,

something that is not so cheerful,

something that makes you feel sad or miserable.

We might say that that thing is negative,

so quite often it will be a negative thing.

It will be used in a negative way.

So common opposites in English.

I'm I'm sure you can think of many. In fact,

you can think of things that make you feel good

and things that make you feel bad.

We can also have things that describe actions.

As I said earlier, you stand the opposite.

Of course, is sit.

You stand on the bus,

you sit

on the toilet.

And that is how we are ending today's live stream.

Isn't that lovely?

Quite often opposite words can be used in English,

but sometimes we can use them in a certain way,

and because of that the meaning can be reversed.

Sometimes those opposite words can become

the other way around.

A negative word can be become positive,

and a positive might become negative.

And of course, it all depends how you say it as well right now.
