To be honest, it is very brutal with the sun.

We actually went out this morning.

We went along to my favourite garden centre.

In fact, it's one of those wonderful shops that sells everything.

Maybe you have one near where you live.

Do you have a shop somewhere

near your house, or in your town or city

where you can buy almost anything?

And I have to say, I love those types of shops.

They don't just sell one thing or one type of thing,

they sell literally everything.

This is the most amazing shop

and it's not very far away from where we live.

This morning I was very pleased because last week

a rather annoying thing happened.

One of my shoelaces snapped and I think in life,

one of the worst things that can happen,

especially when you are in a hurry, and especially for the men,

because quite often men will have to lace their shoes.

They will have to tie their shoe laces.

And the most annoying thing is when you're in a hurry

and one of your shoe laces snaps,

it is incredibly annoying.

And that happened to me last week.

A pair of lovely boots that I have.

One of the laces snapped, which made it very hard to tie the lace.

However, this morning, thanks to the wonderful shop

that is very close to where we live, they sell literally everything.

They sell farming equipment, they sell feed

cows, sheep and horses.

They sell cleaning products, they sell electrical products,

they sell shoes, they sell boots, they sell bird food.

They sell everything, including shoe laces.

So I am very pleased that I was able to find

some new shoe laces for my boots.

Because if there's one thing that can inconvenience

your day more than anything else, it is a broken shoe lace.

It is really, really annoying.

So I have some lovely new shoe laces.

The question again do you have a shop

somewhere in your town or city

that sells everything?

You can literally walk through the door

and you can find the thing you want.

You might not find it straight away, but eventually

you will find the thing you want.

So this particular place, I suppose I might name it.

Shall I name it? Okay.

It's called Cambers Cambers

and it is the most amazing shop.

It sells everything you can imagine

for animals, for farms,

for your day to day life, for anything.

It's incredible, including shoe laces,

which I now have a new pair of.

And you can see that beautiful yellow tree with its lovely petals.

That particular tree is called a laburnum.

And and if you look closely you can see bees.

There are lots of little bumblebees flying around

gathering the pollen from the laburnum.

You have to be careful, though, because the seeds,

the actual seeds from this tree are poisonous. So

please don't eat

laburnum seeds because you will become very unwell.

Mr. Duncan, can you explain what it means to be fluent

in English from your point of view?

When we talk about fluent, we often mean

a person has a certain standard

or skill of doing

something or understanding something.

So for me, to be fluent means

you are familiar with a certain thing,

maybe a certain task or a certain type of technology.

You are able to do it.

You understand it very well.

So from my point of view, it might be not.

It might not be everyone's point of view.

But for me to be fluent

is to understand something.

You have an understanding of that thing,

so maybe you can speak a certain language,

but also you can understand the language you have fluency.

It means you can speak, and also you can hear the language

and you are very familiar with it.

So from my point of view, fluency

is understanding

a particular thing and having the ability

to understand it in day to day situations.

Well, not yesterday, Friday, Friday I cooked the most amazing meal for Mr.

Steve.

Yes, it was my aubergine and potato bake

with lots and lots of garlic.

And I think, I think maybe

I could be slightly obsessed with garlic.

I have a feeling perhaps I might have a deep obsession

with with that because I love eating it.

I am crazy about it.

And all of that comes from my time when I was living in China.

Because you could buy garlic quite easily,

and they would often put the garlic in vinegar.

So they there were pickled pickled garlic.

And I would sometimes buy a really large

jar of pickled garlic.

And I would go home and I would just sit and eat

lots and lots of pickled garlic.

So I might be a little bit

obsessed with garlic.

I know not everyone, not everyone likes garlic.

Some people say, Mr.

Duncan, I cannot stand garlic

and I certainly don't like it on other people's breath.

Well, all I can say is, when we are in Italy,

if you do meet us, make sure you don't stand too close.

If you don't like the smell of garlic, because I love it.

And the good news is, a lot of people in Italy also like garlic.

So a lot of the food in Italy does contain garlic,

just like the French.

They love garlic very, very much.

And I was thinking yesterday I was actually talking to Steve

yesterday on our walk

and I said to Steve,

imagine if there were other things

that you could buy that tasted like garlic.

For example, why don't they have

garlic flavoured milk?

Maybe you could put garlic into the milk and drink the milk

and have the beautiful garlic taste at the same time?

Does it exist anywhere?

And if it does, where can I buy it?

So you could have garlic.

I was going to say what else could you have.

You could have garlic chocolate.

What about chocolate that has little pieces of dried garlic inside.

With that go together, do sweet things

and garlic go together.

All I can say is I love it.

I love the smell of garlic.

I love the smell when you are cutting the garlic,

when you chop the garlic I love,

I love to smell my fingers.

Is that weird?

But whenever I'm cutting garlic or preparing garlic,

I always like.

To have a little sniff of my fingers as well,

because it is absolutely lovely.

industrious means to be busy, to be working.

Jobs that need to be done before we go to Italy.

and, you know, time is running out.

We've got lots to do.

We've got to plan the trip when we're in Italy.

I can't come back and have weeds growing everywhere.

They are literally, you can see them grow.

Duncan, and watch them literally grow.

Can I just say, Steve,

I don't know about you, but in all of the years we've lived

here, we've been here now for just over 11 years.

I think this particular summer,

everything I've never seen, everything looks so, so lush

and vibrant.

I've been doing, you know what it's like when winter is finished?

If you live in a country where there are distinct seasons,

then obviously in the winter you get a bit unfit because you can't

So all those jobs where you have to dig, where you have to sort of do weeding

and be in a strange position, muscles that you haven't used for,

you know, five months, suddenly,

start to complain, and, that's what's happening.

And it is hot.

It must be, I would say, 28 degrees in this studio. Mr.

Duncan, it is hot fans going.

Well, it is

it is hot in here because it is a studio and it's full of equipment and lights.

It's all although outside, apparently it's only 20 degrees,

but it feels a lot hotter than that in the sun when you're in the sun.

Talking of the garden, the other night I went out.

I couldn't resist going into the garden the other night and filming

the wonderful rhododendron.

It has come out in its full glory.

And I don't think I've ever seen

this rhododendron look so amazing.

We had a little bit of frost, but not much.

And because of that I think a lot of the plants,

a lot of the flowers have gone absolutely,

incredibly crazy, including this rhododendron.

We've had so much rain, of course, that now the hot weather is here.

It is perfect conditions for the plants to grow.

It's always this, it's always this period.

Whereas if you don't get on top of the weeds now,

it's going to be a very big job, later on.

So, anyway, it happens every year.

We forget around this sort of meh time.

You've got to get out there and, and and do things.

Yes. And Lewis, of course, as we know, does lots of exercise.

Yes, I do lots of exercise all the time running and cycling or whatever.

But the thing is, the muscles that you need to do,

you can get very fit running and cycling and walking,

but they're not the muscles that you have to use when you go digging

in the garden or weeding, bending over your back starts to ache.

but anyway,

happens every year and then bye bye.

Sort of my sort of July.

I'm as fit as a fiddle as they say. There's a good expression.

As fit as a fiddle, as we say, it means you're very fit.

about tourist sites in Italy, a bit of advice would be useful.

But I think I've been reading around and you can get a tourist pass.

and that will give us access to all that.

Most of the sites in Rome.

So you buy this, you pre buy this pass okay.

And then you don't have to buy any tickets when you go right back.

Before you go I think you have to book the dates

you want to get you mentioning this one while you're mentioning this,

but I'm just mentioning it because people, who are watching

us, who live in Rome, can advises you see, and.

Yeah, well, I've already looked.

I know what I'm just. Yep.

Yeah, I know you, I know you look, I've looked, but I'm just saying, you know.

Yeah, I tell you what. No.

Forget about the monuments. What I'm interested in

is the food.

What are you going to say? The men.

Oh. Where is the best place

to eat the Italian food?

And I've already had a warning from someone who said, be careful,

because some of the restaurants are just for the tourists.

The food isn't very good.

So we do have to be careful.

We I think you have to go around the the back streets

and the places that are away from the tourists

and then and then you can find them all authentic Italian food.

We'll have Christina, we'll have Francesca,

we'll have many other people

who are native to Italy and know Rome very well.

And they will be able to say, no, don't go there.

Let's go to this little secret one I know down a back alley

where all the locals go, and it's fabulous.

I'm sure it'll be fabulous food everywhere.

But as we discovered in Paris.

So some of its rubbish.

Apparently some of it isn't even in Paris.

We went to some.

If you go to the tourist areas, you get served food, which you just know

isn't very good.

But anyway, we'll be fine.

I'm sure that's that's anyway, that's the bit of advice

I've received is to be careful where you eat.

And also, I suppose another thing we should mention, because we are

going to Italy in just three weeks from now, around three weeks.

Well, people have been asking on him, Mr.

Duncan. They've been saying, have I learnt any Italian?

Well I've learnt, I've learnt a bit, definitely.

I have been, I've been on YouTube.

And I've learnt about the vowels because the Italian language,

from what I've discovered is all about the vowels.

The vowels are very important, not the bowels.

The vowels,

very are used a lot in, in Italian.

There's a lot of similarities.

EIO0, yes, there's, there's a lot of, there's

a lot of expressive mouth movement with Italian.

It is, it is.

Well it well I was just about to say can I just.

Is there an E in that. Yes.

Although I've discovered that the E vowel and the oval

have both closed and open.

you know, what's the way to the bus stop?

I just need to be able to, you know,

Can I just say that all sounds rather creepy.

if I was, I imagine I will be coming back from Italy on my own. Mr.

Steve will be serving a long, long time

in one of those Italian prisons which I have a feeling might be his aim.

So if I start, I don't think that's going to work.

I don't think it's sort of.

It's old fashioned Italian, I think.

But anyway, I just I was sort of just joking, really kind of.

The person teaching Italian said, listen to

Italian, go on to Italian QVC channel

and just listen to people speaking Italian

newsreaders sort of broadcasters because there will be speaking

very good Italian.

and then you can sort of pick up the, the lingo, as we say, the expressiveness

and you that you'll see the products and get some idea,

just let it seep into you passive listening.

Well so that's much that's okay Steve, I've got a, I've got a sometimes talk.

By the way, that is one of the things about going to another country.

And if you are interested in another language, I always say

that it is good to immerse yourself in another language.

And if you if you learn some of the language and then you.

One of the things I find that is very useful when you visit a place

that has a different language from your own,

is, of course, the signs around you in the street.

It is amazing.

Even simple things like that.

You will eventually absorb the language

in very small amounts, not large amounts.

So all of that information is not is not going in all at once.

But I think once you start to live in a place

where the language is different, I think you can slowly

pick up and learn and absorb things.

That is why many people like to come here to the UK to spend

a little bit of time living here around native English speakers,

because it gives them a chance to immerse themselves in the language.

Yeah, so I've got to learn the basic vowels and consonants.

Not all the consonants that we use in English are used in Italian,

but that doesn't matter.

and I've learned that the vowels.

Yeah. Anyway, we won't go into that.

but yes, I want to learn the basics and then get some phrases going.

Yeah.

The problem is going to be is, is,

not probably going to be able to speak it fast enough

and I won't be able to understand because it will probably

So when you're learning it's it's going to be difficult to understand.

17 different accents in Italian,

which which doesn't surprise me because it's Italy.

Don't forget, Italy is a huge country, and over the years

it was separated into different, I suppose you would say different

sections or different districts or areas.

So you will, you will find whenever that happens, you do have what

we call break off accents or break off

ways, of using the language.

And this is normal.

This happens also in the UK.

You can hear English spoken in very different ways as you move around.

Even England, even our tiny little country,

there are many, many, many different ways of

using the language, many different accents.

I think there's more than 17 English accents.

I think it might be hundreds, to be honest.

There are so many different ways of speaking English.

Something else I want to mention briefly, Steve,

we a couple of weeks ago we went to Birmingham.

I was asked if it would be possible to talk

briefly about Birmingham, so I'm going to do it right now.

Here we go.

So here is this is the second city by the way, after London.

We have Birmingham and there it is.

There is part of the skyline of Birmingham.

And it's not too bad I have to say.

I think Birmingham still needs

to, to do a lot of work and a lot of reconstruction.

Now here you can see this is the railway station, the main,

the main railway station in Birmingham

called Grand Central.

And the station itself is called New Street Station.

But as you can see it looks amazing.

They have done so much work on this particular part of Birmingham.

However, I think it would be fair to say that there is still a lot of work

that needs doing.

There are a lot of parts of Birmingham that still look a little rough,

let's just say, and then look at the size of that.

There was a huge bull in

the the shopping area

of New Street Station and every 15 minutes

it will come alive and start making a sound,

which which alarmed me a little bit, to be honest.

Because, well, formerly that was known as the Bull Ring.

Oh, yeah, that is the reason why.

And to give you another flavour of the centre of Birmingham,

this is also one of the new shopping centres.

When I say new, you mean the one on the left?

When I say new, I think this was built around maybe 20 years ago.

And there, if you look, there is a Vietnamese restaurant,

a Vietnamese restaurant, there are many, many

restaurants selling Chinese food,

Japanese food, Korean food and even Italian food.

Look, there's a Pizza Hut and also a Nando's and those.

So then you can see just a brief glimpse of the centre of Birmingham.

So this particular part of Birmingham looks quite nice.

However, as I mentioned a few moments ago, there is still a lot of work

that Birmingham needs to do, and one of the problems

at the moment is the council

recently

went bankrupt.

They have no money,

which is very inconvenient, run out of money

and they've doubled everybody's, local taxes. Yes.

council tax as we call it here.

Yeah.

So so it has caused quite a few problems.

So I would say that Birmingham has.

Well, I suppose it did suffer during the 1970s

because it did become a little bit rundown, a little bit old fashioned.

A lot of the buildings were starting to look worn and dirty.

And so slowly Birmingham is changing.

But I think the recent situation with them

having no money to spend

might also slow that process down a little bit more as well.

Birmingham isn't known for being a particularly picturesque city.

No, it has to be fair.

You've made it look quite acceptable on those pictures,

but it always depresses me a bit.

Going to Birmingham.

I shouldn't probably shouldn't

say that, but it's not particularly attractive.

a city if you're used to Rome, Paris, places like that.

London. I would say.

I would say the one thing I will say, Steve, in all seriousness, is

I felt a lot more relaxed and safe

walking around London than I did walking around Birmingham.

That's all I'm saying, that you can make of that what you want.

You can interpret that however you want.

But I felt much safer walking around

London than I did walking around Birmingham.

If you were put it this way, viewers, if you were visiting England,

you would not put Birmingham on your list of tourist places to go.

You wouldn't.

I think from a historical point of view.

So when we talk about the the historic

or the historical importance of Birmingham,

of course, it was one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution,

including the area in which we live now as well.

So the birth of the Industrial Revolution did start in that area.

Birmingham, also around here in Shropshire.

and I suppose also Manchester as well.

So those places

have a very historic importance

or historical importance when it comes to, to the development

of not just this country but the world.

But I do feel as if Birmingham still has a long way to go before it looks nice.

And it's not going to get any nicer anytime soon.

No, because they've run out of money. They're bankrupt.

The council is bankrupt.

so all projects have stopped.

but as I said, you wouldn't go there

unless you knew somebody that live there.

We are now putting our own English ability to the test.

Confusing English words English words that exist in English

that may or may not be confusing for some people.

They are, and for others they are not.

The first one is

oh oh, I think these are good.

I like these two words, often

confused words.

Words that are confused with each other.

Even native English speakers will often confuse these two words.

The words are lend and borrow,

lend, borrow to lend.

What would you say, Mr.

Steve? To lend something is to what?

Yes, to give something to somebody like money.

I'll lend you £100.

And it means that you're giving somebody £100

with the anticipation that you will get it back. Yes.

At some point.

Well, mean bank lend you money and charges you interest

because that's how they make money.

Yes. Well, lend is always temporary.

You never give something away.

you never lend something as a permanent thing.

So that that is always the understanding that lending is something

you are giving to someone, but only for a certain amount of time

or with certain conditions attached.

And that's right, Steve. Money.

I could give you £100.

Or I could lend you £100.

The difference being you are.

If you lend somebody some money or something, you might.

You're expecting to get it back.

I'll lend you my lawnmower.

I'll lend you my garden.

And the reply might be, yes, I'll lend it to you. Yes.

But it's amazing how

many people say, can you borrow me your pen?

We're also talking about people who speak English is their first language.

They will often also get these particular things wrong.

Eligible and eligible.

Those two words are different in many ways.

In fact, you might say that they are completely different.

Yeah, they are not related at all.

But people often mispronounce these words

are particularly eligible.

If you are eligible for something, it means that you are entitled

to get something hmhm based on a number of criteria.

It could be age or something like that.

are you eligible for a bus pass?

you only become eligible

for a free bus pass in the UK once you pass the age of 60.

So we can say that you qualify for that thing.

You qualify, you're eligible to get something.

You qualify for it based on a number of criteria.

It could be age or health conditions or something like that.

but a lot of people get that word

confused and say that they are eligible.

Yes, they mispronounce it.

and they should be saying eligible.

So if you are entitled to something or you qualify for something,

maybe something that you will now be able to receive,

you are eligible, like a flu vaccine,

if if something is illegible,

it means it is unclear.

You can't make that thing out.

It is unclear. You can't read that thing.

It is illegible.

It can't be seen. It can't be read.

Maybe you write something down on a piece of paper

and then the paper gets wet.

And now, oh, I don't know what it says it is illegible.

I can't I can't read it.

You're writing is illegible.

it means often they say a doctor's writing is illegible.

Yes. It's so difficult to read.

It's illegible.

whereas eligible, for example.

What people often say is, for example, if you reach a certain age,

you might be eligible for a flu vaccine

in in lots of countries that is the case.

But often people will say that they are eligible when they mean eligible.

of course we can also have another thing.

If a young man, if a young man is

is handsome and maybe he has a good job and maybe he

he he's looking for someone, maybe a partner, you can say that

that man is an eligible bachelor,

or he is someone who who is their,

And if a lady would like to,

to take him out for a meal or to a party

or for a weekend in Milan,

and then, yes, he is

eligible.

An eligible, he's eligible.

That means that he he fits a number of criteria that women would like.

it could be

he's young, he's handsome.

He's got a good job. Yeah,

his personality is right.

It just means there are, as we said before you, a number of criteria

make you eligible for something or entitled to something.

they have a number of qualities that women would like.

So I affect something else.

Maybe Mr.

watching, because then it goes up, you see, or down it goes up when Mr.

So effect and then we have effect.

Well effect is of course the result.

So the effect is the result.

Again, most of these words we can probably describe as being active

and passive in the way that one thing is

Emigrate and immigrate.

Does it sound like a real word?

But it is. It is.

So to emigrate means to to go from

where you are living.

You leave your home,

you leave your country and go somewhere else.

You emigrate.

the years have emigrated to New Zealand

and Australia, a very popular place where lots of people want to live.

Lots of doctors in the UK,

emigrating to Australia and New Zealand because they get paid a lot more.

during difficult times or bad times or illness,

maybe you have had an illness in the past

and that person, your friend or relative has the same illness.

You will know exactly how they feel.

You have empathy.

You are literally in that person's situation

because you know how they will feel or how they will be feeling at that time.

Would you say yes?

Yes, this quite a distinct difference between those two phrases and empathy.

As you say, it means that you are understanding

their situation, their point of view.

whereas sympathy,

you don't you can you can be empathic towards somebody,

you can understand their point of view, but you don't necessarily

have to be sympathetic with them.

that means that you, you

if you are empathic

or being showing empathy with somebody,

it means you're giving them sort of constructive help.

Yes. Well, you know how that person feels or

what the experience is from your own experience. Yes.

Sympathy is just offering some sort of of

emotion that is there to comfort another person.

So the sympathy is given.

You don't necessarily have to know how that person is feeling.

You are offering your your thoughts.

You are saying, I'm sorry to hear about your illness.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your family member.

you offer sympathy.

You are being sympathy.

Take so very different.

So empathy is a much more personal thing.

You are feeling that thing.

You know how that person feels from your own experience.

Yes. In way that person is feeling at that time.

If somebody is ill, you can give them sympathy.

you can say, oh, I hope you get better soon.

Oh, it must feel awful.

if somebody

dies, you offer, you can offer sympathy.

Empathy often is is something where you will

not necessarily be emotional about it. You.

You're sort of understanding that point of view

and maybe helping them

through a practical perspective.

whereas sympathy is you're not really helping them.

You're just sort of saying, oh, I'm sorry.

Yes. Another good way of putting that.

Of course, is putting yourself in someone else's shoes as well.

You put yourself in another person's shoes because you understand

how that person feels. Moving on.

You are showing something.

You are letting people see the thing you have, or maybe the thing you can do.

Maybe you are a good performer, maybe you have some nice new clothes

and you want to go out and show your friends

how how cool you are with your new clothes.

You flaunt that thing,

you flaunt your wealth if you are.

If you describe or say to somebody, oh,

or you're talking about somebody, or they like to flaunt their wealth,

it means that they've got money and they like everybody to know

they've got it.

Yeah, by buying flashy cars, gold rings,

things like that, they flaunt it.

And it's usually, often used in a negative way.

Would you say, Mr. Duncan? Not necessarily.

Not necessarily.

No, I'm not a criticism.

I'm just going to elaborate.

Used as a criticism in the fashion world,

people will flaunt themselves on the catwalk, on the catwalk.

So flaunt is not necessarily negative.

But you are right, it is often used or seen

as a negative thing when people are showing off.

You flout the rules.

You disregard the rules.

When we go to Italy into one of the lovely churches there, Mr.

Duncan will flout the rules by wearing a bikini.

Yes, I will be walking around the Colosseum in my open back bikini.

I might get a nice suntan as well whilst I am there.

So flaunt to put something around to to show off.

Show off your wealth visually and flout

is to go against something you flout, something quite often, repeatedly.

You do it again and again. We are running out of time.

So you, you, you, you run your bike, bicycle on the pavement

where all the pedestrians are okay, flouting the rules.

We got to carry on, Steve.

Historic and historical.

Now, this is a common one that everyone gets wrong.

And even though they do look very similar,

they have quite different meanings.

Something that is historic

is something that is worth recording

or memorising or something that is notable.

Maybe a certain building, maybe it is

the first building of that type to be constructed.

We can say that it is historic.

Maybe an event, maybe something

that happened, Steve, that that has never happened before.

You might say that all of these people meeting together,

it's never happened before.

It is historic.

Something is historic.

It might never happen again.

A historic building,

a building that has history,

maybe famous people lived there, maybe famous things happened there.

the Colosseum is a

is is a historic building. Yes.

That's a good that's a good example. Yes.

If you call that a building.

and then when we are talking about

general history, historical, historical,

something from the past, general things

that happened in history, historical,

but something historic is a thing that that occurs.

It is happening. It is there.

It might never happen again or it only happens every so many years.

Or maybe, maybe never again.

So there is the difference there in those two words.

And by the way, yes, you're right, Idris, flout the rules.

You could use the word violate the rules,

as well.

Violate to go against that thing,

imply and infer.

Now, this is a hard one because I have to say, sometimes

I don't know what the difference is between these two words,

because they are they almost look the same.

So if you imply something,

you are making a suggestion that something is happening

based on your own feelings

or thoughts without any proof,

you just imply something.

You imply that your neighbour

has been stealing your vegetables during the night.

Yes, you have no proof.

You can't prove it.

You can't say I have evidence.

You're just implying not.

Not directly.

You imply that thing.

Yes, you might say.

Are you,

you might be at the office and you might go up to a colleague and say, are you,

I saw you with, with Jonathan last night in a restaurant.

and the other person might say, are you implying

that I'm having an affair with Jonathan?

No, no, I'm not it.

I'm not saying anything. You would. You.

It's the tone of your voice.

The way you say something,

is how you would use the word imply.

So to infer something is to suggest.

So you have some evidence.

You have something there, you have a source,

and you can infer something from that.

So. So you have something that is there, tangible.

You gather meaning from a thing

that you've seen or something you can show.

And maybe you invite other people to, to infer as well.

Now, this is a very controversial one because this gets everyone into trouble,

I've been corrected when I've got these wrong.

So this is confusing for various reasons.

First of all,

and the reason why I want to make this clear

is because there are some very unusual things about these two words.

So when we say lay, we mean place something into position.

And when we lie, we recline.

Maybe you lie on the bed or you lie down.

So lay is placed into position.

Lie is to actually recline.

But there is more. Yes.

Can I just use an example?

Yeah.

If you want to lay the table, it means you put down

the knives and forks and the plates and the condiments.

You lay the table, you

you put things in into position

on the table.

you might lay out a body in the morgue.

You place the body in position.

So whereas if you're feeling tired, you might say, Mr.

Duncan, I'm very tired.

After this live stream, I'm going to go and lie down.

But the child to do this confusing thing about these two words.

Davis lay the past

tense of lay is laid.

And that's where the confusion can come in with these two words.

So you lay something, you have laid it on the bed.

You laid something, you put it down for an example,

a chicken,

Will lay an egg.

It has laid an egg.

And then, of course, we have lie recline.

The past tense of that is lay.

Just to make things even more confusing.

It's a confusing one, so I can see why this one is often confused.

So the past tense of lie is lie.

But can I say

instead of I'm going to lie down, can I say I'm going to lay down?

No. You might place yourself into position,

but normally it's with an object.

So normally it's with a thing itself and lay the table or lay the things out.

So you lie, you lie.

He is lying on the bed.

But of course you won't say lying on the bed.

You will say he is laying on the bed.

But if if you it.

But as you say, it's to do with the past and present, isn't it?

Yes. Well, yes.

It says here on the screen. Yeah. That's it.

So I can say to you I'm going for a lie down. Yes.

Because that's the present tense.

That's what I'm something I'm going to do.

Whereas if you said if I just

if you were looking for me and you couldn't find me and then you,

then you suddenly found me, you can say, where were you, Mr.

I would say, well, I went for a lie down.

That's the past.

That's correct, isn't it, Mr.

So. Yes, yes, it's a confusing one.

to be honest, people aren't going to get too confused if you get it wrong.
