oh hello there here we are already halfway through October and another

Sunday has arrived as you can see it's raining the UK right now is being bashed

and thrashed by lots of storms and the rain is falling quite fast today I'm

standing here literally getting wet just for you coming up on today's livestream

we have lots of things including being famous a great subject and something

that lots of people are talking about at the moment because it would appear that

the only way to get on in life right now is to be a celebrity would you like to

be famous would you like to be well-known we'll find out later on also

mr. Steve will be here as well talking about lots of things I will be taking a

look at the first TV show that I ever watched as a child way back in the late

1960s I'm not joking and of course you are more than welcome to join in as well

on the live chat after all it's just after 2 o'clock here in the UK it's a

wet Sunday afternoon and this is live English live from Much Wenlock in

I hope so here we go again it's Sunday once more

and already we are halfway through October I can't believe we are just a

few weeks away from the end of the year it seems amazing really don't you think

so today a very special lesson we are talking all about being famous as you

can see I am wearing my superstar clothing today I am dressed as a

celebrity even though in real life I'm not a lot of people think that I'm

famous but I'm not honestly I'm not a famous person not as famous as this guy

yeah coming up later on we have lots of things to talk about but first of all as

I've already mentioned it is a little bit wet outside let's take a look

outside shall we so there it is the view right now it is a very gloomy miserable

wet day outside in the garden and as you can see the rain is falling we have been

battered battered literally battered by storms this week we've had so much rain

I can't begin to tell you how much rain we've had so it's still raining outside

at the moment let's have another look in a different direction shall we so let's

have a look over there you can see the or terminal leaves are out on the trees

looking very nice and we were outside yesterday as well having a lovely walk

would you like to see some shots of the war

we had yesterday and we decided to take a bit of a risk yesterday because we

walked out in the windy weather and there you can see the trees are really

swaying from side to side it was a very windy day yesterday but mr. Steve and

myself we decided to brave the elements we went outside and we took a lovely

walk we went into town to have something to eat

but it was so windy and as we were walking under the trees we realized that

some of the branches had actually fallen off and there you can see some of them

some huge branches and can I just say if one of those was to hit me on the head I

think it would kill me instantly and there is one that fell yesterday during

our walk and you can see that's a pretty big piece of wood there a pretty large

branch and there's mr. Steve posing by the branch yes Steve we get the message

it is a very magnificent piece of tree and now into the garden you can see that

autumn is really really getting underway now there is my lovely damson tree you

can already see that many of the leaves have fallen and the leaves that are on

the tree have now turned a beautiful gold color I know I said this last week

and I know I say it quite often I love autumn

I think autumn is a wonderful time of year very colorful and it's definitely a

season that gets many people excited because of the wonderful nature that you

can see at this time of the year if you are lucky enough to have the seasons

then this is what you will see autumn is a wonderful time and there you can see

many of the different league on the floor on the ground lying on the

grass lots of different colors gold red green there are even some brown leaves

so as you can see the the leaves turn many different colors so quite a variety

of color can be seen during the autumn months and a few people have asked about

the daily air mr. Duncan how is your daily ax well there it is it is still

flowering can you believe it so the daily ax this year has been very very

crazy producing lots of different flowers all through the year and there

you can see it is still in flower so I hope you enjoyed that and of course the

rain is falling it's not a very nice day to day everything has changed so we had

wind yesterday and today we have lots and lots of rain and also wind as well

as if it wasn't bad enough now it is raining and it's really really coming

down quite fast later on we are going to check out the spidercam it's been a

while since we've checked in on the spiders so today that's exactly what

we're going to do I have placed one of the spiders in front of the camera so we

will be taking a look at the spiders today yes we still have the spiders

it's nearly 5 months now that we've been looking after these spiders for one of

Steve's friends so the spiders are still here and lots of people are interested

they want to find out how the spiders are doing they are ok I think they're

getting bigger I've noticed that one of them seems to be getting larger and

larger we are talking about Fame have you ever met anyone famous we will be

taking a look at one of my video lessons that I made all about Fame we will take

a look at some excerpts from that lesson a little bit later on also today

something we mentioned last week that I haven't actually got around to showing

you so today we will have the weigh-in we will be weighing me I can't believe

it so today we will find out exactly how much I weigh and perhaps you would like

to make a guess at how much my body mass is so here we go it is the live English

that's very suitable for today because it is raining and that can only mean one

the month I can't believe how fast October is going by

it's whizzing by it's going by very quickly

talking of doing things quickly there are many ways of telling a person to do

something quickly or quicker first of all you can say hurry up hurry

up if you want a person to do something quicker maybe they are going too slowly

you can say hurry up hurry up mr. Duncan you're walking too slowly hurry up hurry

up with your essay you need to get it in by tomorrow hurry up so there is one way

of telling a person to do something quicker you can tell them to hurry up

also you can say come on come on if you want to encourage a person to move

quickly or faster you can say come on come on it's a way of saying hurry up do

something quickly come on another way of telling people to do something quickly

get a move on get a move on do something faster than you are right now tell them

to do it quicker get a move on do it quickly

also you can say chop chop chop chop that means hurry up quickly chop chop

don't be so slow do it quicker chop chop he is possibly my favorite of all pull

your finger out pull your finger out if we tell someone to pull their finger out

it means that we want them to do something quicker we want them to stop

being so slow or maybe they are behaving in a lazy way you want them to do

something quickly but they are taking too long

you can say pull your finger out pull your finger out like that when it's

quite nice that you can simply say quickly quickly do it quickly and you

will notice also there is an exclamation mark at the end of the word so we are

telling someone to do something quickly quickly finally we can also say I

haven't got all day I haven't got all day

that means I'm in a hurry I can't wait around for you to finish you need to do

it quickly you need to hurry up I haven't got all day so I hope those help

you out with your word power and your English in general back to the live chat

and then we are going to take a look at something that commemorates an event

that happened this week Oh already lots of people are joining in with the the

words and sentences you can say hit the gas oh thank you NP yes you can also say

hit the gas if you tell someone to hit the gas or hit more gas you normally say

hit the gas so hit the gas means hurry up go go

quite often you will say this whilst driving a car you might want the person

driving to go faster you can say hit the gas go faster we have also carried ass

I might be the only person now doing live English streams on YouTube because

most of the other people have given up because it's so difficult to do you have

to put so much energy into doing this and of course you get a whole two hours

of live English and no one else on YouTube is doing that not one person

just just me oh and also mr. Steve is well talking of mr. Steve

there he is mr. Steve will be coming later on okay I've taken my sunglasses

off now because I couldn't really see what I was doing to be honest so let's

have a look at something special this week we celebrated here in the UK we

celebrated national egg day and I thought it would be interesting to take

a look at an excerpt from something I did on one of my live streams

oh hello there welcome to my lovely little kitchen I hope you are enjoying

today's live English stream of course we are back together today because I wasn't

here last week I do apologize once again for not being here last week but I have

a lot of things to do right now for instance I have a lot of things to do

right now I am making some eggs for mr. Steve's lunch and also I going to have

some as well of course you can't have eggs without toast

as you can see earlier on I put some bread in the toaster and then eventually

becomes toast of course so I have the toast ready all I have to do now is to

make the eggs now of course there are many ways of making eggs you can boil

them you can fry them you can scramble the eggs if you wish but today we are

going to poach the eggs and that means that we are going to make the eggs

become very hot over boiling water so we don't put the eggs actually in the water

we cook them over the water and of course the water has to be very very hot

which it is now so the water behind me is now boiling on the stove

and we will make some poached eggs of course eggs are super duper food look at

that a lovely box of eggs there are six eggs which of course is half a dozen as

I said earlier when you poach eggs it means you cook them over boiling

water you don't put them in the water so first of all we have to break some eggs

there is a great expression in English which goes you can't make an omelet

without breaking some eggs of course eggs are very good for you they have

lots of protein and also lots of good cholesterol as well many years ago

people thought that eggs were bad for you but now a lot of people believe that

eggs are actually quite good for you in fact they recommend that you eat at

least one egg every day I'm not sure how true that is but I love eggs and so does

mr. Steve so without any further messing around let's get on with today's meal we

are making some poached eggs we need to make sure that the eggs don't stick to

these small cups can you see so we are going to break the

egg each egg and put it in one of these small non-stick cups but I'm going to

put a little bit of oil in there as well just to make sure that the egg doesn't

stick so just a little bit of oil not too much doo-doo-doo

now mr. Steve only wants one egg and I'm only having one egg as well so the

really difficult part is going to be breaking the egg now of course there are

many ways to break an egg I prefer the old-fashioned way which is to just use a

knife and break the shell at the edge so

let's do that shall we let's break some eggs I also have to make sure that and I

take some of the oil out of the cups so I'm going to take some of the oil out

because there might be too much in there so there we go

oh yes that's looking very nice very oily and the other one so we have some

nice oil in there to make sure that the eggs don't stick okay here comes the

really difficult part now we are going to break some eggs first of all I will

break the first egg then I will put it into the small nonstick cup

yeah that's the first one broken and now I will break the second egg

yeah and he's dead so both of the eggs

are now broken and they are in the non-stick cup so there they are can you

see and they are now waiting to be poached so here we go what - that's it

that's all we have to do we now have to wait for around four minutes for the

eggs to go solid and then I will serve them on a plate with some toast for mr.

Steve of course some people don't like eating eggs they don't like eating

anything connected with animals and we call these people vegans so vegans don't

touch anything that has come from an animal and that includes eggs

dip dip dip do it is a Sunday afternoon and there to commemorate national egg

day which took place here in the UK two days ago

I thought we'd have a look at the time when I decided to make some eggs for mr.

Steve I hope you enjoyed that now we are live again and guess who is in the

studio with me I will give you a clue it is something very creepy something that

makes a lot of people scared and something that well terrifies little

children yes it's the giant spider did you think I was going to say mr. Steve

well okay then what I meant to say was here is mr.

English once again it's I'm very happy to be

here with you mr. Duncan on this well not a very nice day it is very rainy

today it's a bit miserable there but we're inside nice and dry look at that

feeling happy I'm feeling happy just like Snow White

some people would say I just noticed you showed that video of you making some

eggs yeah mr. Duncan or some people described my head a shape like an egg

this is looking like an egg there's an egg head this is true oh is that it I

thought yes or some people do you know when you haven't got any hair some

people say oh it's got a bit of an egg head but of course a people like us

don't care because I'm used to not having any hair and although it

devastated me my early twenties it doesn't anymore oh hello what are you

doing mr. Duncan okay wait do you want to hold it so today we are

talking about being a celebrity put your head up slightly that's it so today we

are talking about being a celebrity and today we have a special guest in the

studio it's Bruce Willis Bruce Willis from

from such films as Hudson Hawk do you remember that film Hudson Hall no it's

one of the worst films ever made and Bruce Willis was the star you will never

see that film on his oh you're gonna have to wear this the entire lesson

resident so today we are talking about being a celebrity being famous and we

have Bruce Willis here in the studio now what I love about Bruce Willis is he

doesn't care he has he has no worries about appearing bald and I love that so

that's the reason why and I think sometimes mr. Steve does look a little

bit like Bruce Willis let's take this off so let's reveal mr. Steve so can you

see there so I think Steve looks a little bit like Bruce Willis what's that

expression I'm trying to get that sort of it's well it's mean it's mean and mad

show trying to get the mean and Mac I've never been good at mean in macho know

I've noticed I just I just saw that then let's just put that back there we go I

think we'll just keep that there for the rest of the day there we go

is that more pleasing do you think to your viewers eye that is more pleasing

to myself and also everyone watching out there so today Bruce I'm not having that

on my head for the whole hour and a half that we have left mr. Duncan okay you

see I should have I should have not shaved today and actually he's more of

an egghead than I am yes I think so so yes so his head looks more like an egg

than mr. Steeves anyway last week talking of things that are round we were

talking last week about my my stomach being very round see from the front

people can't tell now today we decided to we're going to start this off

officially today so it is my big diet it is Duncan's diet dd so this morning we

weighed ourselves or should I say I did mr. Steve weighs

himself every day he runs up behind people and goes way so

I weighed myself earlier shall we have a look so let's put them on the floor some

surprised that you didn't break them that's very you are suggesting that I'm

very fat I did they did we get over the limit of the scales ability to measure

weight well before we before we have a look at that show you shall we ask

people to guess on the live chat because the live chat is there and there it is

the live chat yes lots of people want to say hello to mr. Steve and they say oh

yes apparently you do look like Bruce Willis

according to oh oh I ol I Muhammad says you look like Bruce Willis isn't that

nice I've got to know okay yes I need to have

match oh and yet and yet have have emotions at the same time that's what

men want that's what women want isn't it women want men who look like Bruce

Willis do they somebody who's really match oh but at the same time is kind

and gentle and won't beat them up I'm not sure I'm not sure if if Bruce Willis

plays kind and gentle people quite often he plays violent people violent people

at the same time he's going to be you know he's not going to be impossible to

live with as a partner he's a good guy he's a good guy underneath he's violent

stage performances over the years I am famous in in places such as

we can have a laugh or a laugh as you would say mr. Steve can't wait now it

was are we gonna say what happened on Tuesday we'll have we'll mention that in

it so here we go here I am on the scales earlier now how much do I weigh I must

point out that this will be in stone stones stoned pounds in stone yes

because I still like to use stones we have no idea what kilograms on I don't

know what killing I don't relate to a kilogram I have no idea what a kilogram

is it means nothing are you ready are you ready Steve yes so

here it is this is mr. Duncan's weight this is something I did just before

going on air now how much do I weigh that is the big question

don't keep us waiting much longer listed you get they'll keep us waiting yes okay

you don't have to shout in my ear here it comes now what appeared to be shocked

what is mr. Duncan's weight here we go whoo oh my goodness oh dear that is 12

and a half stone or twelve stone five and a half pounds that is let's put that

in perspective well that did you weigh when we first met nearly 30 years ago

when we first met 30 years ago I was about eight and a half stone eight and a

half because eight yes yes we heard it the first time eight and a half stone I

was very very slim very skinny but over the years of course I've

put weight on I've got a little fatter especially over the last couple of

months and that's the reason why I am going to have a little diet I'm going to

eat less junk you were probably a bit underweight when we first met so

probably I would say your healthy weight is around ten maybe ten and a half stone

because you're no you're not you're not you're slightly built your frame or your

skeleton you haven't got a big skeleton well I'm tall you've quite tall but

you're not very broad so I would say I think about ten and a half would be a

good way to you say you knew your target you need to lose about a couple of stone

I reckon so so my weight at the moment is twelve and

a half so I need to lose two stone which is quite a lot that's a lot of weight

I've got to lose so that means that I've got to eat less junk less rubbish fewer

treats less snacks fewer snacks and more exercise and much more exercise so

that's it that that's it so it's it started I am now twelve and a half stone

I've got to lose to stone and I'm hoping to do that by the end of the year so

well ideally you don't want to lose more than a couple of pounds a week maximum

that's it like we said last week yes so eight pounds a month so gradually and

we've got we've got two and a half months left I think I can do it

so 2020 I you could do it you could do it I think it would be stretching it to

lose to stone by Christmas I think I can do it I think that might be too fast

time to determine to literally a stone okay if I can lose okay but I really

want to I'm determined to do it I'm going to do whatever it takes even if I

have to cut my arm off to lose it away green mister don't if I have to cut my

arm off to lose the weight I will I'm determined avidin

that is my end of year resolution so most people have resolutions in the new

year I'm going to have my resolution now before the end of the year something a

bit different how about a bit of liposuction what's that a medical

procedure where they suck the fat out of your body and under your skin they put a

big vacuum clean vacuum cleaner under your skin and they suck they suck suck

all of the fat of your body I don't like the sound of that you're not going to be

able to do it on diet alone you're gonna have to up your exercise regime yes I've

said that already we've said that we already said they're having week twice

today and last week I'm going to get more exercise more exercise yes more

walking which is going to be a challenge now that we're into autumn approaching

winter the weather's going to be bad so you're gonna have to pick your moments

so that's the only problem the weather at the moment look at that outside at

the moment it's horrible it's raining and misty and quite damp so yes I've got

a big job to do there a big job indeed now today we are talking about being

famous would you like to be famous Steve now I know that now and again you like

to walk on the stage and the other night we went to see a show and that's when

the big disaster happened so instead of being in the show we actually went along

to see the show so we were in the audience but on the way we had a couple

of rather dramatic events take place one of them whilst driving along the

motorway suddenly there was a big traffic jam so the traffic slowed right

now and we were stuck but then something even worse happened whilst we were

sitting in the car someone hit the car from behind someone booth

ran into the back of us we were rear-ended rear-ended not in a good way

it's been a while since I've been rear-ended mr. Duncan yes somebody ran

into the back of us I was so annoyed I crashed into the back of I'm gonna bang

suddenly and mr. Duncan twisted his neck I hurt my neck slightly and I jumped out

and ready for a fight you were very angry I was furious Steve was serious

Steve was saying some really really disgusting words like words beginning

with the letter F words beginning with the letter B and Island but I think I

think one one of the words began with C no it didn't

no it's saturated he didn't know I didn't he said the c-word well I I line

look after my cars wait Ben I don't know how he went into

the back of us but yeah I left out I think we know he wasn't concentrating I

think he was texting on his phone because when he got out of the car he

had his phone in his hand but the other thing of course was when he got out the

car he was very apologetic he was really worried that you were going to phone the

police

beat him up give me all your money I need he said to him how dare you going

to knock at my car right boom stop stop stop doing I became Bruce Willis's Steve

you're breaking you're breaking the entry for a fight mr. Duncan nobody goes

into the back of me and gets away with it I'm gonna reduce my stress levels

it's made my stress levels go up I was angry

yes okay but luckily I mean have you ever had anybody sorry but run into the

back of you you realize a hovering I've been drying off of our audience it's

just gone because of her harp there are people watching with headphones never

the other half excited and fired a watch even more but but half of our audience

are now deaf oh they won't be dead mr. Duncan okay

but the thing is when some of this somebody went into the back of me only

about six months ago it's happened twice in the last six months this which is

it's never happened to me ever before in in 30 odd years of driving and suddenly

twice within six months and both times it's people on their phones texting Tess

but the worst part was the guy who who hit the car didn't have any insurance no

anything no insurance he begged me not to call the police yes he said don't

call the police please don't call the police please don't call the police now

luckily for him and he's quite often the case in these sort of low impact rear

collisions he's probably only going between five and ten miles an hour

yes there was it done no damage to my car at all I see anything yes so that

there might be a very tiny scratch but fortunately there isn't any damage and

of course and of course this is something we're moving on to later

because we're talking about cars and and this this is this is the well yes we

this is the thing we discussed just before we started the livestream please

tell me you remember yes oh thank goodness for that so we're talking about

cars later and also being sentimental as well are you a sentimental person now I

think mr. Steve is quite a sentimental person maybe more sentimental than I am

you like to hold on to things that remind you of the past I do I do I don't

like to throw anything away I keep hold of everything I keep all

sort of old things that have gone past their best yes I also really like to

keep on I also mr. Duncan I also keep hold of old things things that have

passed their best you know you could get rid of them and get something new you'd

have to keep shouting by the way I'm not shouting I'm just talking to him now

getting excited you know how I get excited mr. dinner

well we've noticed I'm in front of a live cameras okay we've noticed that

we've noticed it we've noticed that people are gonna start thinking you're

on drugs or something I'm not I'm just high on life okay

which is the opposite of what I was like a few days and maybe we need to cut that

supply off briefly so yes sentimentality so would you like

to be famous Steve that's a very difficult question

it is I don't think I would I'd like to be sort of not very no I wouldn't want

to be very famous no because I think your life becomes very difficult you

don't just do what you like everybody recognizes you so I think the answer to

that would be no so it depends on how famous you are so so whether you are

just a small celebrity not not very famous yes I wouldn't mind being

successful in something and then you know not not that you'd be recognized in

the street all the time I don't think I'd like that and then people following

you and taking photographs of you I think that would that think that would

make your life very difficult that happened to me that happened to me in

China I became a a minor celebrity in China and that did actually happen so I

had a taste of being famous whilst living in China you did and I I must

admit I I didn't really like it all that much I found it a little annoying have

we got anybody famous watching us now is there anybody watching us now who is in

fact a celebrity really famous on the terrible you'd what you don't know could

have people watching us who are famous there was somebody watching earlier who

was a professional musician in fact there were two people so they could be

famous I'm just see that's the sort of thing

I'd like to be very good at something but not necessarily notice I'm just

wondering I'm just wondering how many people we've made deaf so let's have a

fight between about 6 people someone was hitting someone's head onto a car bonnet

yes people were beating each other up in the street yes so here's a warning if

you want to come to the UK to live or to study don't go to Wolverhampton well

it's not I don't think it's any worse than any other town centre are you sure

positive it was voted last year the worst place to live in the UK was it

was that when it used to be crying now that's that's why we moved away so you

thought our parking the car park very close to the to the restaurant so that

we won't have to see any incidents on the streets

space of time we saw two people arguing and fighting the street so which I

didn't impress my parents very much not at all and your parents your parents you

know expect high quality from everything well well I know your father isn't

around anymore but yes very high-class so probably going to Wolverhampton and

wasn't a good idea apparently Jack used to live in Wolverhampton in a place

called Penn I used to live in Penn I used to live in Penn Jack whereabouts

there's nothing to be proud of I was on Mount Road where were you Jack and where

are you now you just go to share what's that phrase that people say you know

English lessons and this is where we talk all about being famous all I have

let's take a look at an excerpt from my fame lesson

in today's lesson we are going to take a look at something that seems to take up

so much of our attention these days in this lesson we are going to take a look

at Fame and being a celebrity

the word famous is an adjective that means publicly known easily recognizable

prominent well-known celebrated eminent in the public eye we use the word fame

to state that a thing is famous so fame is a noun and famous is an

adjective we can also describe a person who is famous as a star the word is

often prefixed with the thing they are famous for doing or the field that they

are in music star football star TV star movie star pop star a famous person can

be described as a star personality or as a celebrity more often than not the word

celebrity is used especially when describing an event where famous people

will be seen a celebrity dinner or a celebrity gala the word glitzy can also

be used which describes an event where many famous people will be

it is possible to be famous for anything fame is often achieved for doing

something positive normally a famous person will have some

sort of outstanding talent or ability of course it is also possible to be famous

for a negative reason being well-known for doing something bad is a kind of

fame but in this case we will often described them as infamous someone who

has gone down in history for doing something despicable and barbaric will

more often than not be described as being infamous

it's a Sunday afternoon and everything is okay in the studio outside it's wet

and miserable but here in the studio it's ever so nice because we've got

Steve and me mr. Duncan live on YouTube we are the only people now that do live

English streams on YouTube everyone else has finished of quit I can't stand the

pressure tell all your friends get them all to watch us yes it's only mr. Duncan

and mr. Steve now live every Sunday on YouTube let's put the details up on the

screen for those who are interested so every Sunday this is the only live

English stream that is on every week everyone else is quit they've stopped

going to do it I'm determined to lose at least one stone but but you know we'll

see what happens anyway the only problem is Steve I will probably put all the

weight back on over Christmas hmm because that's what

happens when you when Christmas time comes you always eat too much food so

there is a good chance that I put a couple of pounds back on so I might I

might actually put more weight back on Pedro's going Pedro has got a better

thing that he needs to do yes so well nice to see you Pedro I wonder what

Pedro gets up to now yes he keeps believing early where you going what are

you up to yes who are you going to see hmm is it somebody new in your life so

that's more important than us I can't believe is it I can't believe that that

Pedro is dumping us for someone else it is for somebody else I can sense it I

know I can feel it as well friend maybe somebody new I'm am i my spider senses

are tingling yes they really are talking of spiders

it is now every time I turn the camera away from the spider it starts moving

around and as soon as I put the camera on it stops moving it's rather annoying

sentimentality today are you a sentimental person now I think Steve you

are probably more sentimental than I am I think sometimes I'm a bit of a hard

nosed person if you are hard nosed it means you you tend to be a bit more a

bit less sensitive although years ago I was a very sensitive

Laur as a child but as I've gotten older as I've got older as I've become a man I

suppose I've been I don't know I've become a little bit more cynical and not

so sentiment in achill but I think you are sensitive so are you a sentimental

person now mr. Steve has some words to show that word yes that's great I didn't

know you were going to do that as well mr. Duncan well we keep looking have one

each yours is bigger than mine nothing new sentimental what does it mean mr.

gay means you're sort of indulging your emotions doesn't it yes you're sort of

thinking about past events often happy events from your childhood or happy

relationships a sentimental person will hold on to the past they will hold on to

things that means something to them they will always look back with fondness they

will try to hold on hold on to things like your your childhood yes or things

that happened in your past then it made you happy and you don't want to let them

go and as this time of the year approaches autumn moving into winter

because we have very distinct seasons hmm here in in Europe

well in many parts of the world do but some parts of the world don't have

distinct seasons so when we're moving into autumn and then through to winter

it's a sort of it's sort of you start to become a bit more sentimental I think

because suddenly you're you're plunged into winter which is often you're

getting member thought of things dying off cold winters approaching death and

so it tends to make you more reflective you tend to think more about the past

you've probably got more time on your hands yes inside because it's with the

weather's bad outside and you may become more sentimental he may be thinking of

fond memories from the past and being sentimental it's it's not

if it goes too far you can become quite ill through it currently you can become

quite negative and and emotional and depressed you become too sentimental

yeah living in the past well I think living in the past is something you tend

to do as you get older anyway I think if you ever talk to someone who is elderly

quite often they will talk about the past and some some times certainly

through certain illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer's that they might

actually end up living in the past as if they are actually at that point in time

so these are the fond memories that they are literally literally reliving because

their mind is slowly going and fading so the only things they have the only

memories they have left are the ones from many many years ago so I think

sentimentality is something we all get but but you you were feeling a little

down last week a little unhappy because you had to say goodbye to your to your

lovely car I did yes mr. Steve had to say goodbye to his car I know my eight

year old car that's done high mileage and sadly I had to sell it last week

because I've got a new car which work has given me to you yes because they

won't let me use my car my old car work anymore I used it for many years for

work so now Steve has a company car and because of that he had to get because we

haven't got space to keep two cars yes and also the other thing is that the

Mercedes that you you've just got ridden of you've just got you've just sold had

lots of problems with it just starting yes hi eight miles I've done a hundred

and seventy-five thousand miles in it anybody who drives you get attached to

your car I was very attached to that car and I didn't realize how much I was

attached to it until I solved it and I was very very upset yes but you said I

was more upset over that car then I was over my father's death

yes it is incredible so I don't think I've ever seen you so I was beside

myself you were beside yourself he was so district' you at literally distressed

boys I was it's taking me well I would say over a week to get over it so it was

just stupid really you sold the car a few days ago and since then you you you

haven't really been able to a week ago over a week to Tom over it now yes

you're over it now but it does take time it does take time but but I think yes if

ever if ever there was a sign that mr. Steve is sentimental that has to be here

because I'd like to hold on to things from the past I hate getting

particularly I don't like buying new things if the thing I've already got is

still working if that really I don't like throwing out things if they're

still workable they're still serviceable I like to have something and use it till

it falls apart it's the same with clothes shoes anything I don't just buy

something new so part of it is that enjoyment of having something and and

using it throughout its entire life and I thought ooh this car would have

probably lasted at least 20 years so I wanted to sort of hang onto this car not

for eight years but for 20 years and but it would have I logically I made it I

made a decision I made a made a head over heart decision so I used logical

thinking to say well it's no point in keeping all to this car I'm not going to

be using it it's just going to deteriorate but I just wanted it they're

still there gave me comfort anyway it's gone it's gone the car is no

more please don't cry again are you really getting upset there we must get

through can we get Bruce Willis back ok what can we have no I got Bruce Willis

never cries no you never you never see Brut there we go that's it you can wear

to 1981 and I've still got it to this day and I still use it most days and it

I don't know why I just like this plate it's tough it's I don't know I just like

this plate so I I keep using this plate and look at these look at these lovely

Tate's here mr. Duncan now they look very old these are my holding these

plates were my grandparents plates so they use these every day and they've got

all sorts of different colors there's a green one there's a grey one maybe this

one is that one's yellow and pink and you don't see plates like this anymore

and when they died I I remember I remember these plates and I wanted them

and we still use them yes but they look they look they look like

something that the Queen might eat her sandwich because people of that

generation sort of that grew up during the war years they used to like to have

expensive cutlery and expensive plates and things like that to eat off it was

just something that people did if you look at that plate No and bizarrely

enough you wouldn't think that plate these plates must be

nearly a hundred years old so these plates are nearly the approximate I

would say 100 years old well probably I would say they probably

bought them after the war no so probably

let's see if they let's see how strong they are I would get mad again mr.

Duncan I'm going to take these very carefully away I'm not sure have you

ever stopped being mad today I think you've been mad for the whole broad can

I think they're about 70 80 years old oh okay not a hundred okay what you see

I've got my grandparents old table and chairs that's are you gonna say bodies

my old grandparents table and chairs which are which I use the table in my

office and I used a chair as well and though that's probably they probably are

a hundred years old I mean they're worthless it's not very good quality but

I like keeping hold of these things I like these links to the past we've

noticed or the past as you would say okay then I really did think that you

were going to say I've got my grandparents bodies maybe you've got

them in an in a sort of big cardboard box somewhere sort of like mummified

I'm very sentimental about I'm sure you will recognize it Steve because it is

the first gift you ever gave to me nearly 30 years ago so this is the first

thing mr. Steve gave to me can you guess what it is

it is a little cat playing with a ball so there is the first thing Steve ever

gave to me a present that he gave to me in nineteen eighty nine ninety nine in

the nineteen eighties Steve gave this to me isn't that lovely

the irony is that I don't really like cash yes'm

but I didn't know that the times I didn't know you very well so that's the

real irony is I'm not a big fan of cats I probably only known you a couple of

weeks I tell you what else is a pain well maybe you nights cats are buying

that I'll tell you what else is a pain Steve barking dogs I got that blowing I

can't stand barking dogs so the head okay I don't like cats and I'm not a not

a big fan of dogs either especially barking dogs I got that from her from a

a jumble sale okay.thank they were selling off old

they what happens when somebody dies they do a House Clearance and then they

sell the stuff off to whoever wants to buy it in like a jumble sale so and so

this belonged to a dead person might drop it

so this belonged to a dead person might have done I just saw it it was all this

it was all this sort of junk they were selling it in this in the Town Hall in

where I used to wear my parents used to live and I just saw that and for some

reason I thought maybe maybe mr. Duncan likes well I didn't call you mr. Duncan

they know you didn't call me mr. Duncan then maybe Duncan the internet wasn't

invented then 1989 likes cats in 1989 there was no YouTube but there was no

internet there was no no no household computers people didn't have computers

in their houses there was no YouTube there was no Facebook there was no email

so all we had was was was things that dead people used to own and that's what

mr. Steve gave to me in 1989 this beautiful little

cat well I would hold it a little more carefully than you are she can become

sentimental about memories I'm not so sentimental now I know that this came

from a dead person you can be sentiment the mother obviously not alive anymore

it can be sentimental about about past memories but you can also get

sentimentally attached to material things hmm like that so if that got

smashed up you would you'd be upset because that reminds you of a happy

event in your past yes and I was sentimentally attached to that car but

it's gone I'm over it now mr. Steve's car I'll never forget it mr.

Steve's car is no more so sure yes Gretel I am a car lover I'm you know I

would like to keep every car I've ever owned

somebody tell me recently that they knew somebody who has never got rid of any of

their old cars and I keep them all under under Polly tunnels what our big plastic

tents that farmers used to grow crops in I used to have a friend at school called

Polly tunnel really yes lovely girl

Jamila no I don't like cats I I hate cats in fact okay

I don't even know why I bought that I hate cats because they kill birds you

know I'm getting more and more confused of the motive by the motivation that you

had for buying this first of all it's it's probably been owned by dead person

and to Steve doesn't like cats and he had no idea whether or not I like cats

so so I might actually just throw this in a dustbin

after we finished suddenly I don't feel so sentimental about this I've got some

other words that are similar in menial connected with that being sentimental

miss I like the sound of that I like the sound of that very much okay then so

show us some of these words then please maudlin are maudlin maudlin

that means extremely sentimental or extreme sentimentality almost

embarrassingly so self-pity sad well it's it's it's sentimentality that gets

a bit out of control and then goes into self-pity sadness often after somebody's

had too much to drink too much alcohol they might get very maudlin and talk

about the past or things that went wrong things they regret doing and should have

done differently they just they just go on a lot and dwell on negative past

events so it's it's it's sentimentality but it's the negative side of

sentimentality they dwell so much on the past it becomes almost an obsession yes

it's embarrassing they can't get out of the habit it's almost embarrassing when

some no I'm so sorry I oh I should never treat you that way it was all you know

they go on and on and on about it like that about past events and they're

they're very self pitying really that's a maudlin so that's it you don't see

that word use very very often yeah more disturbing so maudlin I think I think

these people still use it it's just sort of in certain situations yes here's

another word more casual I like this word this is okay this is a word that

that always resonates in my head because yes yes I will get onto that in a moment

but after I've explained what it means okay so more Koosh it's again it's a

type of sentimentality but it's insincere

sickening really sickening in flavor so it's it's a type of sentimentality

that's sort of almost false it's sort of when you're trying to draw out sadness

or sentimentality in somebody and it's for entertainment purposes almost so

it's sort of insincere and you want to say something about more Koosh mortgage

behavior machinist on television I'm guessing oh

yes now that's the thing that really irritates me nowadays about watching

television everyone has to cry at some point you can't appear on television

anymore without crying and I don't know why and that word more Koosh really does

describe so well the way that TV now manipulates our emotions they make

everything so over sentimental they they get people to cry especially on the news

please tell me about your sad thing please please cry people like to see

other people crying their tears are like are like beautiful lovely diamonds

running down their faces and I think it's terrible it's terrible so quite

often nowadays speech people are manipulated into getting upset over

something maybe more upset than they normally would be so yes I think

television is a very good example of that especially on the news or maybe if

they're talking to a celebrity about their life and they start to remember

things

Wehling too much insincere hmm insincere sentimentality

really soppy soppy someone who's sentimental it's it's really another

word for maudlin really silly it's a bit silly silly sentimentality if you're a

soppy person you're somebody who's who's just a bit too soft hmm who's just a bit

too sentimental and and and sort of too sensitive about other people's feelings

you might also say that that's a sort of informal use so it's it's soppy maybe a

sad romantic film yes a soppy film or a romantic piece of music you can say it's

very soppy yes there we go and a similar word selassie effusive or insincerely

emotional so is slushy it means that there you have a

slushy story a slushy film it's a sentimental film it's it's it's when

you're just being if I was to say it's overly sentimental things to you in in

an almost insincere way you would say that I was slushy yes if I was to say

mr. Tom Kenobi Oh many years ago me is always so wonderful when we first met oh

you're just a beautiful mr. Duncan and you've just got lovely eyes and look at

the shape of your nose are and you just being too mushy and obviously I'm being

insincere I can't disagree with anything you're saying there I could of course be

syrupy as well syrupy which is which is a type of sentimentality sort of sweet

emotional sentimentality being very syrupy almost sickly sickly yes like

syrup so if you please sweet eat too much syrup you might feel sick and if

someone is too sentimental or they are they are being very insincere with their

sentimentality you might say that it is very syrupy that's right simp simply too

slushy really somebody's slushy those two a quite similar a sob story the sobs

literally sobbing means weeping yes so if somebody tells you a sob story it's a

tale of personal distress intended to arouse sympathy hmm so it's a

sentimental story possibly and you tell this story to somebody because you want

them to feel sympathetic towards you because you might want them to do

something for you for example a sob story you might just be simply after a

bit of emotional support you're upset and you just want you bit of an

attention seeker probably you're just probably telling somebody about a sad

story about when you cat died or something and you go on and on and on

about it and you're almost pretending to be a

because you want you want somebody to come and comfort you yes ah a sob story

so a sob story maybe your dog maybe your dog has run away maybe your dog has gone

missing its back outside yeah I don't know it's it's a pain in the neck so

maybe your dog has run away maybe it's disappeared and and perhaps

you're so desperate but you need the attention as well you think it makes you

feel important because your dog has gone missing

so you you get lots and lots of people involved it's a great opportunity for

you to get all of the sympathy from everyone around you so yes yes there are

many ways of telling your sob story the word sob means to cry uncontrollably

which is what I was doing when I sold my car so I asked Wednesday so mr. Steve

gave us a bit of a sob story I did because it's only ik its a sob story is

something anything but it's not really that sad it's a bit stupid a bit silly

really maybe it's sad the person involved but

not to anyone else and maybe they they've they've sort of gone a bit over

the top and they don't realise bit how silly it is really I mean I was sobbing

uncontrollably over selling the car but really if you were to look at it step

back and look at it you would think how ridiculous isn't just a mechanical just

a car just to get a new one it's just a lump

of metal but because you become emotionally attached to objects

sometimes that makes you sad as if if I was to smash one of my grandparents

accidentally one of their plates I would be upset about it so I suppose it's a

bit like this thing that mr. Steve bought for me he gave me this as a gift

back in 1989 so I suppose if this broke if it were to smash I would feel very

upset because this is the first thing mr. Steve ever gave to me isn't that

nice even though it's depicting a creature that you don't even like it's a

cat yes a lot of people have already said

I can't believe you don't like cats they just hunt because they are doing it in

nature but the problem with cats is when they catch something they torture it so

they don't even eat it they just torture it and slowly kill it

so that's one of the reasons why I'm not a big fan of cats an atonia has said yes

Titanic the film Titanic is a very sentimental film yes I really it's

harking on about thee it's really it just it's talking about that those were

good old days of sort of world class steam like the good old days of people

drowning in ships okay then yes it's it's it's it's harking back to those hay

days the heydays of when when when Britain was making these fabulous ships

but they did we were you know it's part of its that part of its history

nostalgia but but the focus of the film wasn't really on the Titanic sinking it

was actually on this this very soppy syrupy yeah love love story so yeah so

so they they mate maybe it was a little bit too romantic a bit too sake I think

so it was too long the music then of course the music by wasn't sharing I

want to say share but it wasn't a shit it definitely wasn't shares that French

woman like I can I can imagine share my heart will go on and all the name I

can't remember name it was Celine Dion got it I wrote it oh so you didn't know

Celine Dion yes okay then that that song my heart will go on that everybody who

has come to detest that of that song now cause it this song that will go on and

on and on that's it but of course now everyone has the song from frozen you

see as the one that they really hate so they liked it at first but now they hate

the song from frozen so that's it you see so so you start liking it and then

eventually you hate it yes because it becomes it then becomes

too sentimental and you can only take so much of that kind of more kiss sort of

soapy solution a way of way of thinking and eventually

you've got to snap back into reality yes quite a few people are saying that you

are more sentimental than me now is he he pretends mr. Duncan pretends not to

be but tease you you're quite emotionally fragile whereas I am more

resilient I think I would say I think you like to pretend you're not but

underneath your honour

apparently Olga has said every time you start your dog barking my dog also goes

crazy really yes no so don't worry Olga we're not going to do it again we're not

we're definitely not going to have the barking dog again so don't worry missing

are used actually Holden is talking about VPNs which is a way of getting

around the the firewall in China which blocks everything including YouTube

so yes VPN you may sit in China for instance but people will be thinking you

talking about lots of things today sentimentality do you have another word

for us to you well not this one isn't really connected with it could be

connected with sentiment melodramatic OS ooh melodramatic

somebody that is a bit over the top in the way that they are behaving or

reacting in certain situation so they exaggerate they exaggerate a lot their

emotions their emotions exactly and and it's often about something silly reason

it makes people laugh oh you don't be so melodramatic my dog my dog where is my

dog I can't go on I can't live any longer without my dog

oh I'm hot where could my dog be I think I will go hi is that melodramatic taking

the mickey out of somebody no it's just an example yes you you sort of obviously

drama being dramatic acting a bit so if you're and you could do this from a

sentimental point of view you know you could recount the story hmm and you

could be her I was devastated about the loss of my cat my cat I don't know harm

go to live on you could go out that would be over-the-top sort of acting

really over something so I've only used it in the context there because it is

sort of connected with sentimentality and go on and on about things do you

know anyone who's melodramatic I think you are Sumpter I think you are

sometimes I think you were very melodramatic last week about your car

yes possibly the fact that you you were getting up in the middle of the night

and sitting downstairs thinking about your car you were thinking deeply about

where your car is now I just I just love that car and I didn't realize how much

until it had gone sometimes you don't realize how much you love things until

they're gone so maybe we will have to try that out on something else there is

maybe maybe I could go and we will see what happens maybe I could just vanish

and disappear and then you'll be on your own how will you survive Steve how will

you get by I'm still young and handsome enough to

find somebody new yes I think you are still quite a catch

yes yes I'm sure there is some desperate person out there who would take you on

with all of your foibles and strangely Indian comes from Canada that's right

she is french-canadian but I remember seeing Celine Dion many years ago she

was on a TV show and and before she had all of the plastic surgery hmm so she's

had a lot of plastic surgery on her face so she's made her teeth smaller they

don't stick out like this anymore and then she's had a little bit of a nose

job as well to make her nose look a little bit more nice little bit more

attractive so yeah Belarus here has used interesting word their phrase crocodile

tears ah yes you could connect that with being melodramatic

crocodile tears isn't that when they're not real tears there for you somebody's

forcing tea yes again you were kind of looking for you're kind of looking for

attention or you are you are just pretending to be really upset about

something or of course you're pretending to be sorry about something so you might

pretend to get really upset about the thing ever so sorry I'm so sorry about

what I did wasn't but really you don't care you couldn't care less and that's

it I've got a nice poem as well that I want to read out which is connected with

autumn maybe we will save that towards the end yes we'll we'll have that

towards the end we are going to talk about something different in a moment

we're going to talk about the first TV show that I ever watched as a child and

we are going to go right back to the late 1960s I know it seems strange it

seems strange and maybe even impossible that I could have been a child in the in

the late 1960s but yes I was I was a child in the late 1960s just as you were

true slightly older than me but they so we'll be talking about that in a

moment but first of all we're going to look at something I was going to have a

mystery idiom today but I've completely forgotten all about it can you believe

that Steve till late now it's very too late very too late so let's have a look

at one of my full English lessons shall we and then we will come back with more

chitchat and we will take a look at the first ever TV show that I watched as a

interest or involvement if you engage with a person then they are more likely

to stay with you a television program must engage with a person or else they

will stop watching movie makers politicians newspaper editors all try to

keep people interested and involved by trying to engage with those they wish to

connect with in engagement is the action of connecting

with something TV producers are finding it harder to engage with their audience

politicians need to engage more with the young

I don't know about you but I love receiving good news hearing something

positive can really perk you up it makes you feel uplifted and warm

there are many ways of expressing surprise and joy at someone's good news

that's awesome really that's incredible that's amazing

fantastic Wow I'm pleased to hear that if the good

news involves the person telling it to you you can say I'm pleased for you

congratulations well done good for you you might express complete shock and

disbelief at the good news no way you're kidding oh my goodness for real I'm

speechless there are many ways of expressing joy at someone's good news

when was the last time you receive some good news how did you react to it with

surprise shock or disbelief

can you see what I'm doing here I'm making myself a sandwich a sandwich

is a very convenient snack you can make one easily you can wrestle up a sandwich

very fast to wrestle up means to produce or create a meal with little preparation

or time you can wrestle up a meal for someone right now I'm wrestling up a

snack for myself I will cut a couple of slices of bread from this loaf spread

some butter on each slice then I will add some filling something to go inside

the sandwich you can put almost anything inside a sandwich cheese lettuce tomato

peanut butter even slices of banana today I'm going to put some Jam in this

sandwich some people just eat one slice of bread

with something spread on top you can toast a sandwich and enjoy it

heated up the sandwich is often considered as being a very British snack

which is not surprising when you consider that it was invented by an

Englishman John Montagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich yes

sandwich is not only a snack it is also a place

energy you want me to read it now I think we'll read it now so then we're

not not in such so much of a rush at the end so here is a beautiful poem and I

think we will have some some lovely shots of autumn whilst you read the poem

what's it called it's called autumn leaves and it's quite a well-known

sentimental poem also written for song as well written to music and many

different artists have performed it the falling leaves drift by my window the

autumn leaves of red and gold I see your lips the summer kisses the sunburned

hands I used to hold since you went away the day's grow long and soon I'll hear

old winters song but I miss you most of all my darling

when autumn leaves start to fall isn't that lovely thank you very much to you

that's a very well-known poem written actually by a French poet called Jacques

pervert although the version that I just read

out was adapted by the famous songwriter Johnny Mercer oh okay you write many

songs such as Moon River the days of wine and roses to name but a few you

wrote 1,400 different songs and about 20 20 over 20 stage shows musicals and that

has there was a couple of famous versions of that particular song I'm

going to sing it to you of course you know the tune mr. De Luca I'm not sure

if it's still in copyright that's the only problem you know what YouTube is

live version of it with that being copy I'm not sure well it if the song if the

tune and the lyrics are in copyright then we might get told off we might get

punished by YouTube we might do so I won't sing it then way back in 1969

imagine a four year old boy Vinny oh I see I haven't finished mr. Duncan what

there's more of the poem yes the what I was going to say that the poem is

expressing a sort of wistfulness a sort of a longing sadness and longing from

the past as autumn often does leading to winter dark days of death and despair

thanks and so yes it's you you you it's talking about a past relationship and

they've left and gone away but because autumns coming it's healthy you just

sort of remembering those past events and of course the song itself is written

in a minor key which makes it sound very sad and it is it's a very sad song a

very sentimental song but also strangely uplifting at the same time

so there we go I finished now carry on imagine a four year old boy sitting in

front of the television and he Tunes in every weekday to watch his favorite TV

show I'm now going to share with you the first ever television program that I

started watching as a child and this was way back in 1969 and I can imagine now a

lot of people are doing this on their fingers trying to work out how old I am

so here it is this is the TV show that I used to watch as a child and it's the

first show that I actually remember watching on our little black-and-white

television and you can see the title is actually in French so this was a French

TV show Steve lemaise I did to do it May it means the house of the dog or the

dog's house in French but in this country in the UK it was called Hector's

house and there were some interesting characters there was a frog and can you

believe it also a cat so there was a little frog between you and me I always

found the frog to be very annoying and also the cat was quite annoying as

well so so maybe that's the reason why I grew up hating cats but the star of the

show was a character called Hector and he is a little dog he is a dog that

quite often makes mistakes in quite in fact quite often in every episode he

would often say Omar surly old Hector but one of the things I remember most of

all Steve is quite often he would walk around brandishing a shotgun and there

he is now this is something I can't quite

imagine this happening nowadays you know can you imagine what would happen if if

a puppet on a children's TV show was walking around waving a loaded gun

I don't think it would happen happen now so this just shows how how things have

changed over the years are you becoming sentimental over this program mr. Duncan

I I don't think I'm becoming sentimental but I am making a point as to how things

have changed over the years so this is this is a program made in 1969 and here

is Hector again once again waving his gun around in fact almost every episode

he would say I better get my gun and he would just walk around waving

this gun around it's incredible I can't imagine this happening now where you'd

have a children's TV show where one of the characters just walks around holding

a gun not a very good role model not a great role model so there it is that the

show I used to watch as a child way back in the late 1960s oh my god I was only

four years old then Steve very self-indulgent of you mr. Duncan well

it's not really self-indulgent it's just something that I can relate to and I

think that's the reason why I grew up so weird watching that show that's the

reason why watching Hector's house and for those that are interested if you are

interested in watching the show there are episodes right here on YouTube so

just look for Hector's house and you will find lots of episodes and try to

count how many times he gets his gun prepared to be underwhelmed

there is brilliant it's a brilliant show it's so funny even though two of the

characters are slightly annoying back to the live chat and then we will go

anything there Steve somebody talking about Kara death talking about political

correctness oh we talked about that last we talked about that last week you know

no I think I might have said too much last week because during the week I had

some messages saying mr. Duncan you said you don't like to talk about politics

but you seemed to be expressing some points of view now I'm not talking

about my own personal point of view of course sometimes we will play devil's

advocate so sometimes we will introduce themes or say things right here on the

live stream just to generate a conversation so not everything you hear

is our personal opinion so sometimes we will play devil's advocate and that

means you will go along with the other side of the argument or maybe the

argument that people would disagree with so maybe you will raise the counterpoint

which means the opposite the opposite opinion so that is to get people talking

to get people talking and also to to be fair as well oh sorry yes go on

Noah mentioned that she's she's googled autumn leaves and found a version by

Frank Sinatra huh there was another famous version by Nat King Cole okay

then he said Nat King Kong Nat King Cole also said but lots and lots of singers

have so another I think women have sung it as well but yes it's it's a famous a
