because the farmer who owns the animals

was actually at the back of the house this morning.

Can I just say

I have met many people in my life,

many different people all around the world.

But this particular man

I met this morning at the back of my house,

he might be the grumpy past,

the most

unhappy and unfriendly person I've ever met.

I said, Hello, good morning.

And he didn't really reply.

He just looked at me

like this

and I said, Are you all right?

And he said,

And a lot. Hmm.

Yeah.

So he made it very clear that he didn't want to speak to me.

He didn't want to have anything to do with me whatsoever,

which is rather awkward because he was actually

just behind my fence.

Technically, he is a neighbour,

or at least the animal that he has will soon be my my neighbour.

But he was so unfriendly and I sometimes wonder why that is.

So why are some people unfriendly

when you meet them, especially for the first time?

I always like to think that I make

a good impression when I meet someone for the first time,

even though I kind of quite shy, quite shy and introverted.

But I do always try to show my best side

to someone I've never met before.

However, this guy

this morning did not want to speak.

He made it very clear by his attitude,

but also the look on his face as well.

I don't want to speak to you.

But I am hopeful.

We will have a little bit more nature later on

with a little mouse because the mice are back

after their long hibernation, they have returned

because I like nature and I have a feeling that you do as well.

Apparently Beatrice was going to the bank,

all of the gossip

and chit chat about last weekend's

coronation of King Charles, it's all vanished.

No one is talking about it.

Isn't it strange when you have a big event or a big thing that happens?

Isn't it strange how quickly people move on?

They forget all about it.

So? So virtually no one is talking about the coronation

now, even though a lot of people today are talking about

the British royal family,

apparently a certain newspaper in this country

is actually in court at the moment.

They are being sued by some well-known

celebrities because apparently this particular newspaper

was spying and using a legal method

to find out or obtain information about those particular

well-known people, including members of the British

royal family,

namely Prince Harry.

So that is something that happened

this morning. It's been happening.

And apparently the newspaper has now admitted responsibility.

So it would appear that they are about to to

maybe come to some settlement out of court.

So this sometimes happens when you maybe if another person decides

to take legal action against you, you might have to go to court,

you might have to fight in the court

to come to some arranged it.

But of course, some people don't want to go through

the lengthy procedure of a court case.

So instead they settle.

They settle, which means that one person will probably give

the other person a lot of money and then everything is sorted out.

How was the coronation? And it wasn't too bad.

And today we are talking about things that are extra, some things that you have.

But then you have a little bit more.

Maybe you have extra

extra food,

maybe extra water

or maybe an extra English addict life stream

like this.

It always amazes me how fast a mouse can move.

And there was a very good example of that.

So we do have lots of wildlife, lots of animals living in the back garden.

And the mouse, that particular mouse

is a regular visitor, as you can see.

It has found a way into the garden by going through one of the walls.

We have something to talk about today because this is English addict Extra.

So this is an extra live stream.

Something extra for you to enjoy on a Wednesday.

Oh. Very nice.

Fancy pants, even.

So we are talking about extra things.

If you have something that is extra, something that

maybe you want more of,

you want more of something extra,

something that has to be added on because it is required.

So maybe you have so much, but

you need extra, you need a little bit more.

Maybe you need some extra time.

Maybe you need some extra water.

Perhaps you are going for a walk over

a long, long distance

and perhaps it is a hot day,

so you will need to take some extra water with you.

Something you need, something you need That's more than the thing

you have at the present time.

We often describe it as extra.

So let's have a look at some of the words.

You may have already realised that today's live stream is shorter than normal,

so it isn't as long as the Sunday live stream.

I will tell you that now.

So we have a little bit more, a little bit more,

a little bit more than what you have already.

I suppose you might say that we all want a little bit more

whatever it is, maybe a little bit more free time, perhaps a little bit more

money,

maybe a little bit more

happiness in our lives.

Like the guy I met this morning at the back of my house, he was really, really unhappy,

I have to say.

He might be the most unhappy person I've ever met.

You might want an extra portion.

Portion.

So when we say portion, we mean a part of something.

A section of something, a portion,

maybe a portion of pie, a portion of cake,

something that is given in a certain amount.

So maybe you have a portion of food,

but it isn't enough.

You would like an extra portion.

So I always find this word quite interesting portion,

a piece of something maybe something that is measured out in a certain

quantity can be also portion.

So perhaps you want a little bit more than you were given.

You want an extra portion, you want more than you were given.

You might want more of the same.

So this is an expression we use quite often in English

when we say we want more of the thing we are already enjoying.

You want more of the same?

Maybe you enjoyed a certain type of performance

or a certain type of show,

or maybe a certain type of music,

and you like it so much.

You want

more, you want more of the same,

you want more of that particular thing

because you like it so much,

you might want to repeat something again.

So you could say that something that is being given extra

might be an extra performance of the same thing.

Quite often if you go to see a show,

maybe something being performed on stage,

you might want an on pool,

you want to hear that song again, you want to see that performance.

One more time.

So quite often an encore will be given an encore,

which of course comes from the French language.

You might go on a journey or a trip.

You might experience something that you enjoy.

Perhaps you are at the fairground and you go on a ride

and you enjoy it so much you might say,

Let's go round again, let's go round again, Let's do it again.

Maybe you are walking through a field and you go round in a circle.

You enjoy the walk so much

you say, Let's go round again, let's do it again.

Let's go round again.

I believe there was also a song in the 1970s called

Let's Go Round Again.

Mhm. You can have an extra portion of cake.

It is true.

And I'm sure someone will say Mr.

Duncan, we think that you enjoy having an extra portion of cake.

Well, you might be right, but not at the moment,

because as you know, I am on a diet.

I am losing a little bit of weight

from around my stomach.

It's going rather well, by the way.

You might also have to do something extra

during a procedure, something you are doing.

So maybe if you are doing a certain thing,

you might have to do it again more than once.

For example, quite often if you are washing your hair,

for example, sometimes you have to put the shampoo in your hair twice,

so you will put the shampoo in your hair

and then you will rinse the shampoo out of your hair.

But then you have to do it again.

Quite often they will say, rinse and repeat.

So something you have to do more than once as an instruction.

Quite often, if you read the label

on certain types of cosmetics.

Shampoo is a good example.

You rinse and then you repeat.

It means you do it again.

So you have to do something more than once.

You have to do it one more time.

You might have to add some more.

So extra in this particular sentence is

you have to add something to the thing

you've made already or something you have already.

You need to add some more.

I suppose the best way of expressing

this is if you are adding ingredients into a meal,

maybe you are putting things into a recipe.

Perhaps you want to add a little bit more sugar or salt.

You are adding extra.

You add some more.

So you might describe this also as as an instruction.

Maybe you have to add some more salt

to a recipe because perhaps you want a little bit more flavour.

So to add some more means

that you are putting extra in.

Here is a famous line

from a very well known story called Oliver Twist.

So maybe you want extra.

Maybe this is a way of asking for more than what you already have.

Maybe you are eating a meal.

Maybe you have some soup or some porridge, and perhaps you want some more.

So you might ask if you can have extra.

Can I have some more, please?

Can I have some more tea,

please?

Can I have some more coffee?

I want extra.

Because once is not enough,

you might have to put more on all in or over.

So again, you are having to add extra.

You might have to put more on or in or over.

So all those might be described as directions.

Things you have to do.

You might have to put more sugar on your grapes fruit.

You might have to put more salt in

the stew.

You might have to put something over.

You might sprinkle flour

over the dough before you start to mix it properly.

Beatriz says the word encore is new.

Yes, we often say on call when we want something to be repeated.

You want an extra performance.

You want something to go on longer

by repeating it.

So yes, we often use the word encore.

You might ask for an extra portion.

Can I have an extra portion of pie?

Can I have an extra sprinkle?

I love that word.

By the way, the word sprinkle means you are putting something on,

but only a very small amount,

a very fine amount of something.

You sprinkle or something

you might have an extra dash of something.

So the word dash is very similar to sprinkle.

It means a small amount

you are putting it over or in.

So when we say an extra dash,

we mean a little bit more, a little bit extra.

And then, of course,

we can say an extra serving of something.

Maybe you are having a dinner party

and maybe someone else arrives who you weren't expecting.

You might have to come up or you may might have to produce

an extra serving because there is an extra person

joining the party.

Extra might also be too much.

You might have too much of something.

So extra can also be too much.

Maybe you have too much of something in your food and then the taste will be spoilt.

So it is possible to have too much.

Sometimes having extra

can cause problems or difficulties.

So sometimes it is wise to make sure that

if you do have extra make it isn't too much.

You might put too much curry powder

in your food and then it's too spicy.

It's too hot. You can't eat it.

It's too much curry powder.

So even though you put extra in the food,

it might be too much.

Perhaps you put too much sugar in your tea or coffee.

I know. I used to.

I used to always put lots of tea and lots of sugar in my tea

and in my coffee and I would do it quite often.

But these days I am cutting back.

I am cutting down on the amount of sugar I eat.

So you may have too much curry powder, too much sugar,

you might have too much exercise,

you might do too much exercising, and perhaps you do damage to your body.

This is always something that I, I think about

when I think about looking after my body.

I think it is very easy to do something too,

even if that thing appears to be good for you.

So I do think doing something more than you need to

quite often can be bad for you,

especially things like exercise, or

maybe if you are doing too much of something

so you might eat too much food,

you might also exercise too much.

Maybe you will damage one of the muscles in your body.

Or maybe you will cause yourself some sort of injury

as these says, extra hours.

Yes, I suppose so.

If you are working for a company, maybe they want you to work

for some extra time, some extra hours.

So the hours refer to the number of hours that you work,

maybe the number of hours you work each day, your hours.

So maybe you have to work extra hours, more hours.

Well, I agree with you that if there's one thing you know about me

is I love food, especially food that is unhealthy.

And yes, cheese is very high up there.

I am looking forward, by the way, to trying

some cheese, but also some lovely traditional French bread

when we are in Paris for the big rendezvous.

I'm really looking forward to that.

I have a feeling maybe by the time I come back

from Paris, perhaps

we'll have put a little bit of weight on.

We will have to wait and see.

It's also possible not to have enough of something.

So maybe if you served a certain type food

and maybe you want a little bit more salt

or a little bit extra sugar.

So sometimes it is possible

to have not enough of something,

so you want a little bit more of it.

So if there is not enough quite often you will add extra,

you will put extra onto the food,

you will add a little bit more.

We can also make something extra

by extending it or making it longer.

So maybe you add some extra to a certain thing.

We often think of time as being extra, so maybe in sports.

I suppose a good example would be football.

In football you might have some extra time

at the end of each half of the match

to make up for the stoppages when there were moments where the match had to stop.

So quite often they will have extra time.

In football you extend something, so if something is short

but you want it to be longer,

it can be anything.

You extend it, you make it longer,

something is extended.

You can say that it is extra long,

so maybe your break for lunch is only half an hour,

but you want to extend it

to an hour to one hour.

You want to make it longer.

You need extra time.

Quite often in life you will notice in life quite often

there is not enough of what you want

time.

There is never enough time, never enough

time, money There never seems to be enough money.

You always seem to need a little bit more.

What about what else could you want more of?

I suppose if you are hungry, maybe your meal is not enough.

Maybe you want a little bit more because it hasn't satisfied

your appetite.

Yes, maybe if you are working for a company and perhaps they like you,

maybe you are a very good worker, a very good employee,

maybe they will extend your contract.

They will allow you to stay with that company for longer,

so ours refers to your work period.

So each hour is

a section or a portion of your working day.

So quite often we use the word hours.

Maybe next week you have to work extra hours.

So yes, we normally say extra hours.

Well, expand is very interesting because expand

can also refer to the volume of something.

How much something holds?

Maybe if you are blowing up a balloon.

So imagine

you are blowing up a balloon.

You will notice that the balloon will expand the volume of air.

Inside the balloon will increase,

and then the outer surface of the balloon will expand.

So quite often expand refers

to volume or quantity.

As something grows, extend

normally refers to length of something length.

So that is the difference.
