The phrase 'Bog Standard' - what does it mean? / It's time to learn English

You know I love English phrases.

There are so many English  phrases that can be used.

Today I'm going to tell you all  about a very interesting phrase

that we often use here in British English.

The phrase is 'bog standard'.

'Bog standard'

We often use the term bog standard

where we are buying something

or maybe something that provides,

or does a very simple thing,

or maybe something that is

at the bottom of the range of  all of the things you can buy.

Something that is at the bottom or is basic

can be described as bog standard.

Maybe you buy a new piece of technology

but it is not very sophisticated.

It does a very simple job.

It does it well but it does  it simply without any frills.

We can say that thing is 'bog standard'.

"I bought a cheap computer  from the shop the other day, 

it's nothing special, it's just bog standard."

It doesn't do anything sophisticated.

I can use it for sending emails...

I can use it for typing,  but it doesn't do much else.

It is bog standard. (basic)

Remember that particular phrase is often used

in British English.
