Teacher Tom: Guys, welcome to a very special video  

with me and my good mate, Aly.

Aly: I don't deserve that much enthusiasm. 

Teacher Tom: Yeah, I think you do. Ladies and gentlemen,  before we get started, yes, he is better  

looking in person than on the videos. So Aly,  you are from Papa Teach Me, the YouTube channel. 

Aly: I am. 

Teacher Tom: Do you want to tell people about it? 

Aly: Yeah. You have beautiful eyes,  

by the way. I was blown away. Teacher Tom: You're such a flirt

Aly: They're very blue.

Why are you flirting?

Aly: It's very blue. 

Teacher Tom: You're such a flirt.

Aly: Yeah, I teach English on Papa Teach Me channel.

Teacher Tom: Yeah, you're that guy that did the Jason Statham, right,  

the cockney-

Aly: That was me.

Teacher Tom: You were that guy.  

Aly: That was me.

Teacher Tom: And hundreds of other videos.

Aly: Yeah.

Teacher Tom: We've done lots of videos together. They've been  a lot of fun. My favourite one that we've done was  

the Halloween skits.

Aly: Dressing up as Creepy Girls.  

Teacher Tom: That's the one.

Aly:  That was fun.

Teacher Tom: And Halloween's coming in October and I will be  releasing it again. Maybe we should do a part  

two. Do you think? 

Aly: I don't have that costume  anymore. Do you have yours? 

Teacher Tom: I do, yeah. It's above my wardrobe. 

Aly: I had to throw away a bunch of  

clothes and that didn't make the cut.

Teacher Tom: Okay, fair enough. Anyway, we're going  to get started with a Q&A today. You  

guys have sent some fantastic questions. But  first of all, I always start with five fast,  

rapid fire questions for Aly. So, the first one.  Aly, what is your favorite British English word  

or phrase?

Aly: British English word?

Teacher Tom: Yeah.  

Aly: Wanker.

Teacher Tom: Okay, why do you like that one? 

Aly: It is very, very direct. You can't say it without any passion. If someone's annoyed  

you, you call them a wanker. It gives everything.  You give everything with that word. It delivers  

what it promises.

Teacher Tom: It's an insult. Quite a rude insult.  

Aly: Yeah.

Yeah, don't go around saying  it to people that you- 

Aly: That you like. 

Teacher Tom: That you like, yeah. 

Aly: Yeah, but if someone's annoyed you, if someone has  

offended you in some way, yeah, call them wanker.

Teacher Tom: Yeah. Often you'll hear it in a road situation  where maybe the cyclist is cycling, then a car  

cuts them up and the cyclist will be like,  "Wanker," like that, you know that kind of- 

Aly: Yeah, and they're so uniquely... Well no,  

Australians use it too.

Teacher Tom: Sure. Guys, I just want to quickly tell you

All right, next one. What is your favorite-

Aly: What's yours by the way?

Teacher Tom: My favorite British word?

Aly: Yeah.

Teacher Tom: I like a lot of Cockney rhyming slang. So, to  have a butcher's, I quite like that. I like the  

playfulness of those kinds of words. 

Aly: So I always talk about how people don't really use cockney rhyming slang anymore.  

You do though.

Teacher Tom: I do.

Aly: You genuinely do use it. Not  ironically either, you just use it. 

Teacher Tom: Yeah, so things like barnet,  

right? Barnet fair, hair. I will legitimately  use that because I just like it's like oh,  

going to get my barnet cut, nice Barnet.

Aly: Yeah. So you are living proof  that it's still living and well. 

Teacher Tom: Yeah. 

Aly: You still use cockney slang. 

Teacher Tom: It's not as widespread as everyone  

goes on about that, right? Aly: 

No. Teacher Tom: 

I think it gets a lot more  attention than it needs to. 

Aly: 100%. 

Teacher Tom: Probably my  

fault. I talk about it quite a lot. But, yeah,  you're right, no one actually uses... I mean,  

not many people use cockney slang.

Aly: I mean, yeah, people do and everyone understands  it, but it's not like, oh, once you arrive in  

London everyone's like, "All right mate, let's  go up the apples and pears." It's not like that. 

Teacher Tom: Why is it that whenever anyone does  

an impression of a cockney, they're like- Aly: 

You have to swing your arms. Teacher Tom: 

All right darling, yeah. Up the apples and pears.  All right, your favorite British English accent? 

Aly: British English accent? 

Teacher Tom: Yes, sir. 

Speaker 3: Three hours later. 

Teacher Tom: Surely a cockney one, no? 

Aly: No, we live In London. You hear it too  

often. It's too familiar. So probably Welsh.

Teacher Tom: A Welsh accent?

Aly: I like a Welsh accent.  

Teacher Tom: I mean, within Wales, of course, there are lots  of different accents. But what, so probably  

like a Southern Welsh accent? Do you  want to do a little impression for- 

Aly: I don't, no. 

Teacher Tom: Quick one. 

Aly: Okay. Give me something to say. 

Teacher Tom: Say Alistair Williams. 

Aly: Something more fun  

than that. Okay, no, I'm taking that back. It's  either a Welsh or a Bristol accent because they're  

so non-threatening. You can't be a gangster. You  can't sound really threatening and tough and have  

a Welsh or a Bristol accent.

Teacher Tom: Yeah, well, isn't there quite a fun fact that  Darth Vader, the actor who played Darth Vader in  

Star Wars is actually a Bristolian.

Aly:  I think that's true.  

Teacher Tom: He actually talks like that. He has  a lovely accent like that and it's  

like... What's a phrase that Darth Vader  would say? You're a traitor to the realm. 

Aly: Let Me Google it. Let me Google  

it. We have to do this properly.

Teacher Tom: Yeah.

Aly: You were a part of the Rebel Alliance  and a traitor, take her away. 

Teacher Tom: Doesn't quite have the same power to it, does it? 

Aly: Yeah, no, it's just... Let's get an ice cream. 

Teacher Tom: Yeah, I agree. I think a Bristolian accent,  

there's something really sweet about it.

Aly: Yeah, and they also do that rhotic R thing.  Countless videos I've said "British English,  

we don't pronounce the R in things like doctor,  lawyer, better, harder." We mostly don't,  

but Bristol does.

Teacher Tom: Bristol Does, yeah. Scotland as well.  

Aly: Where's your car? Your cars  in the park with the birds. 

Teacher Tom: All right, let's get to the next  

one. Your favourite place in the UK?

Aly: London. It's still, yeah, London. Is it not yours?

Teacher Tom: I feel like that's cheating. I feel like you can't choose London, you live here. 

Aly: Why? 

Teacher Tom: Of course it's your favorite  

place. Pick another place. 

Aly: Well then why ask?

Teacher Tom: Got to be somewhere else. 

Aly: Dunstable is where dreams go  to die. I grew up in Dunstable. 

Teacher Tom: For context, yeah. What about a Brighton  

or... I don't know, you went on a day trip to...  Where did you go on a day trip not that long ago?  

It was quite a long time ago. To the seaside.

Aly: Hastings?

Teacher Tom: Hastings.

Aly: That's not nice.

Teacher Tom: No, okay. Hi to all our fans in Hastings.  

Aly: Okay, I haven't been to Isle of Wight, but I hear  good things. I'm imagining that that would be my  

favorite place.

Teacher Tom: I don't think you can pick a place you've  never been to as being your favorite place. 

Aly: You can't Just move the goalposts  

when you ask me a question, Thomas.

Teacher Tom: So you're going with London? 

Aly: Yes.

Teacher Tom: Give us a reason why.  

Aly: Okay. Anything you want, it's here. If you go outside London, go to the town center. Yes, you've  

got your H&M, you've got your Primark, you've got  the main stores that you might need, your Tesco,  

your Sainsbury's. But London has a vibrant energy  that nowhere else has. Everyone is trying so  

goddamn hard to live here that it's an energy that  radiates through everyone else. There's a unique  

creative energy that you feel in London that you  just don't feel anywhere else. Everywhere else,  

people have given up on life. In London, though  people are struggling to survive and I thrive off  

that energy. What about you? 

Teacher Tom: No, I like that and I think about that, for  example, when I get off the train at King's Cross,  

St. Pancras area where  

Aly: YouTube Space.

Teacher Tom: YouTube space, yeah. Used to be, right? You get  off the train there, go in there, and you just  

felt the energy. Google offices are there. There's  some other really cool tech companies and you just  

felt there's this energy, this buzz.

Aly: It's so nice.

Teacher Tom: You're going around. It was like, that is exactly  what you're talking about, that kind of creative  

feeling. Yeah, I miss that. But anyway, it exists  in loads of different areas of London. I agree with you.

Teacher Tom: Okay, what's your favorite British food? Aly: Oh, I love a scotch egg, but I don't know if  that's the favorite one. I can't just say a  

parsnip, can I?

Teacher Tom: No.

Aly: Okay, apple crumble.

Teacher Tom: Okay, all right. That's what  Billy's choice was, apple crumble. 

Aly: Did he say apple crumble? 

Teacher Tom: He loves apple crumble. 

Aly: Who doesn't love apple crumble?  

It's the best thing ever. Anything warm with sugar  and cinnamon, how are you going to beat that? 

Teacher Tom: Yeah, that's not bad. 

Aly: And then you have apple in there. 

Teacher Tom: Yeah, good shout, I like it, perfect. 

Aly: Do you Have it with custard or... 

Teacher Tom: Yeah, custard. Love  

Custard. Lumpy custard. Any custard. Love it.  Even the tin, the store bought custard, great. 

Aly: Oh, yeah. 

Teacher Tom: I've got no problem with that. 

Aly: No problem at all. 

Teacher Tom: If someone was to make custard, fantastic.  

But just a store bought like Birds custard.

Aly: That's all you need. we're not picky here.

Teacher Tom: Okay, last question. One tip for anyone  coming to the UK for the first time? 

Aly: Avoid Leicester Square like the plague. 

Teacher Tom: Yes. 

Aly: Yeah. 

Teacher Tom: Good shout. 

Aly: Don't go to Leicester Square. Everywhere  

that you've heard about, like, "Oh, I'm going  to London. I'm going to see this, this, this."  

Don't go there. I guarantee they are not like you  imagine. Have you heard of the thing that in Japan  

it's like a real problem of Japanese people have  such a romantic idea of Paris and then when they  

get there they are so heartbroken at just how shit  Paris is? They're like, oh my God, it's nothing  

like the movies. I feel like you have a similar  experience in London. If your first day you go to  

Leicester Square and you're like, what is this  place? This isn't like it is in Harry Potter. 

Teacher Tom: I was actually having a conversation with  

someone last night about your first impressions  of a place and it's determined by lots of factors,  

right? I think weather, if you land in London and  the weather is crap and you pay quite a lot to get  

from the airport into the central London, then you  arrive at Leicester Square, and Leicester Square  

is not what it's about. It's super touristy,  really expensive, just chaos. I hate it. If  

that's your first impression of London, you're  going to be really disappointed. Rain splashing  

on your face. Yeah, that's rubbish, I agree. But  then, once you explore away from Leicester Square,  

like for example, Chinatown is awesome. Soho is  awesome. Covent Garden can be fun. There are some  

nice places around it. Then you keep going further  out. I think real London is outside of Zone 1. The  

really cool stuff is Zone 2, Zone 3.  

Aly: Yeah, definitely.

Teacher Tom: Come out east. Go west.  

Aly: I'm not sure you... My old students  used to complain that they were like,  

"Where are the English people? I walk around  London. I don't see any English people." Where are  

you going? Leicester Square, Piccadilly, Camden,  yeah, no one's there. You're not going to find  

Londoners in Zone 1. We don't go there. Zone 2,  at most. We'll go into Zone 1 if we really have  

to. I don't know. We don't even go to... When  was the last time you went to Oxford Street,  

because you wanted to?

Teacher Tom: Yeah, no, not because I wanted to. Probably the  Christmas lights, to see the Christmas lights  

in December.

Aly: Because you needed to, yeah.

Teacher Tom: Yeah.

Aly: You live around here. There's an H&M. You've  got all the Oxford Circus, Oxford Street shops  

here. You don't need them. If you've got an H&M in  your city, you don't need to go to Oxford Street. 

Teacher Tom: You really like H&M, huh? 

Aly: I've mentioned it a few times, haven't I? 

Teacher Tom: Are you sponsored? This is a nice shirt. 

Aly: I'm glad you mentioned that. No,

Teacher Tom: Oh, okay.

Aly: Because it's got the seam on the side.

Teacher Tom: Oh, that's nice.  

Aly: These are like in fashion right now.
