So today, I'm on the beach  and I want to know what the

This is what Brits think of Americans, here we go!

What is… what are your just,  general thoughts on Americans?

My general thoughts on Americans  are, I think they’re quite brash,

they’re quite loud people. - Uh huh.

I was actually kicked off of  ''Facebook'' for 24 hours,

for making a remark about the Americans.

There's a big contrast between  everybody’s, not just England’s,

but everybody's awareness  American culture through films

and TV series and stuff. And  then, how is in real life.

And they have a reciprocal lack of understanding

of other people's cultures, partly maybe,

because their media system is just so big

and it pumps out so much stuff.

First of all, what are your general  thoughts on Americans, US citizens?

Okay, I suppose… mainly,

we meet Americans when we travel abroad, anyway.

And so, we see them as  tourists and don't always have

the best opinion of them, as… as tourists.

They’re quite loud and brash and erm…

yeah and I guess weight is  an interesting issue as well,

Right, my thoughts are a bit mixed, in a way.

Because, as we were growing up,  in poverty stricken England,

when Americans came over here, they  always seemed to have lots of money

and were perhaps little bit louder than we are.

우리보다 조금 더 시끄러웠기 때문입니다.

However, after holidaying in America,  I've found them incredibly kind,

quite sort of, gentle and interested.

Interested in people in  England and the royal family,

which I didn't know that much about.

And also, incredibly polite on the roads,

because they don't drive as fast as we do.

And how about you, what are  your thoughts on the Americans?

I think they’re… they can  be rude and abrupt. - Yeah.

I don’t like Donald Trump.  Not many people do. - No.

My experience of being with Americans, in America,

미국에서 미국인들과 함께한 제 경험에 따르면

is that they are, they were always  very friendly and very welcoming.

Okay. - And particularly, in New York for example;

I met quite a few people in  New York. And they were like,

firm but fair. Which… I think they're very honest.

Only through the sort of, I suppose the…

the stereotypes that you know  and create through yourself,

they seem a as… as a nation,  very patriotic… patriotic.

Yeah. - Compared to… compared to what perhaps,

we're more divided about that here.

I think, (it) seems to be from  whatever political background

내 생각에, (그것은) 그들이 미국에 있는 어떤 정치적 배경에서 나온 것 같습니다.

they are in America, I’d say  they’re… they all appear very to,

제가 말하고 싶은 것은 그들이

believe in the flag and freedom  of speech and all the… all the er…

…

what’s it… the amend… the various  amendments that they have.

Oh yeah, yeah. - So I think  they're probably more together,

in some ways than perhaps  we are, on certain things.

But then, also very different from different…

different polarising views as well, I suppose.

My general overview of US citizens,  is that it’s a vast mixture.

This country is a small mixture, but yeah,

lots of people think Americans  are, the big country,

lazy, fat, as a lot of people say.

But I've met and worked with  Americans, who are just not like that.

And people from different states,

states next door behave and  act totally differently.

완전히 다르게 행동하고 행동합니다.

I've not travelled too much in the US.

However, I've been to the east  coast; er… New York and Boston.

그러나 나는 동해안에 가본 적이 있습니다 . 어... 뉴욕과 보스턴.

My perception has been very good, New Yorkers;

뉴요커 여러분, 저의 인식은 매우 좋았습니다.

slightly more brash than the Bostonians, I guess.

Bostonians보다 약간 더 성급한 것 같습니다.

But, I think the perception is very  much that they are slightly naive,

하지만 그들이 약간 순진하고

ignorant perhaps. They… you get this perception

아마도 무지하다는 인식이 매우 많다고 생각합니다. 그들... 당신은

that they’re all obese and love huge portions.

그들이 모두 비만이고 엄청난 부분을 사랑한다는 인식을 얻습니다.

I can agree on the huge portions,

많은 부분에 대해서는 동의할 수

but I don't know if it’s fair that  they’re all naive and ignorant.

있지만 그들이 모두 순진하고 무지하다는 것이 공정한지는 모르겠습니다.

And I guess, on the… on the reverse,

그리고 내 생각에는, 반대로...

that they think that we are  very posh and all speak well

그들은 우리가 매우 고급스럽고 모두 말을 잘하고

and drink tea and eat scones. Then  again, that’s not who we all are.

차를 마시고 스콘을 먹는다고 생각하는 것 같습니다. 다시 말하지만, 그것은 우리 모두가 아닙니다.

Nice. - But yeah, I think that’s  just… there are a lot of stereotypes.

멋진. - 하지만 네, 제 생각엔 그냥... 고정관념이 많아요.

Well I'm a bit biased, because  I've got relatives in America.

미국에 친척이 있기 때문에 약간 편견이 있습니다.

So yeah, I got relatives in California  and I… I think they're great,

예, 저는 캘리포니아에 친척이 있고 저는... 제 생각에 그들은 훌륭하고,

they really friendly and open and…

정말 친절하고 개방적이며...

And do they have any er…  character traits that kind of,

그리고 그들 모두를 하나로 연결하는 그런 종류의 어... 성격 특성이 있습니까

connect them all together? That you’d  say… outstanding character traits?

I think they’re… they’re very  warm and friendly and hospitable.

내 생각에 그들은... 그들은 매우 따뜻하고 친절하고 후대합니다.

But I do love English people  too. Don’t get me wrong.

하지만 저는 영국인도 사랑합니다 . 오해하지 마세요.

Have you been to the US? - Yes I have.

미국에 가본 적이 있습니까? - 네, 있어요.

Whereabouts in the US have you been?

미국 어디쯤 가봤니?

I… I did the Florida thing. Went  to ''Universal Studios'' etcetera.

나는… 플로리다 일을 했어요. 'Universal Studios' 등을 방문했습니다.

And it was fantastic, had a fantastic time,

the Americans were lovely, it was very clean.

So yeah, I had a really good time there.

Okay. - And they seem to like the English. - Yeah?

Yeah. - Well, we are their cousins,

We’ve been to California twice  and we've also been to Florida…

Oh so east and west. - And New York, yes.

I've worked with quite a few people from the US,

I suppose, through work.  Primarily, from the east coast

and then some from the west coast, but I think,

there’s such a different range  of people across the states,

that’s ‘cos it’s such a vast country.

Vastly different sort of, cultures and…

and the demographics really, so.

I suppose it depends on where… where you go,

what different kind of people you experience.

If you could take a character  trait or a cultural thing

from the US and bring it to the UK to improve UK…

영국으로 가져와

like, UK life or UK culture. - Yeah.

영국 생활이나 영국 문화를 개선할 수 있다면요. - 응.

Is there something that  you’d like, that you’d take?

Yeah I think I’m… I'm a huge  sports fan and I think the…

네, 제 생각에는 저는... 저는 엄청난 스포츠 팬이고 제 생각에는...

the college sport is amazing. And yeah, so I’d…

대학 스포츠가 정말 대단합니다. 그리고 네, 그래서 저는...

I went to university and played first team tennis.

대학에 가서 1군 테니스를 했습니다.

But it… I was playing in  front of maybe, three people.

하지만 그건… 아마 세 사람 앞에서 놀고 있었어요. 반면에

Whereas over there, it's as big as you know,

some big tournaments and I think  it’s the same for all sport.

So I think that culture of sports in college,

to getting into a professional  sport, would be really cool.

Right, ‘cos you get kind of, sponsored.

Yeah, you get sponsored and  you get drafted into the…

into the professional leagues, as  well. - Right. Nice, well said.

I Guess they're er… lack of reserve, I suppose.

내 생각엔 그들이 어... 여유가 부족한 것 같아요.

How does that… that contrasts with…

그게... 우리나라 사람들을 보는 방식과... 어떻게 대조되나요

with how you see people in our country?

?

Americans are more… they give  their opinion more freely, I think.

미국인들은 더… 더 자유롭게 의견을 내는 것 같아요.

And that's not necessarily a bad… a bad thing.

그리고 그것은 반드시 나쁜 것은 아닙니다… 나쁜 것입니다.

I think we probably could learn a  bit more from that, we’re sometimes

too reticent, to shy to say  what we think, to closed.

you can sort of tell what they're  thinking and feeling. - Right.

Is there anything that you  would take from their culture

Yes, they seem to be very…  quite happy to, what we call,

blow your own trumpet. - I like this phrase.

Whereas we always downplay  anything about ourselves.

And I think that's good, I think  it must be good for children

to have confidence in themselves, yes.

you have to be self-deprecating.  - Yes exactly, yes.

That positivity I think, generally.

I think would… would go down pretty well, I think.

Does this say that, we're a bit... - Go  on. - Self-deprecating, or something or?

이것은 우리가 약간... - 계속하세요. - 자기 비하, 또는 뭔가 또는?

Self-deprecation is fine. -Yeah.

자기 비하가 좋습니다. -응.

And I think that's quite a nice trait.

But I think sometimes, it can go a bit far.

And I think a lot of people can  sort of, put themselves down

The British can be a bit oppressed. -Yeah.

Whereas, I feel like the  Americans are much more open

to what life can bring. - Yeah, yeah.

The one thing I think Americans have got,

미국인들이 가지고 있다고 생각하는 한 가지는

which a lot of people don't agree with,

is they believe in their country.

조국을 믿는다는 것입니다.

Majority you know, perhaps not everyone.

당신이 알고 있는 대다수는 아마도 모든 사람이 아닐 것입니다.

But I think the Americans say; hand  on… you know. - Yeah. - And er…

you know, are proud of it and I  think Britain's should be the same.

And there’s lots of reasons  why they’re probably not.

But, we should be proud of what we got.

It’s seen as a bit of a faux  pas here, to be kind of,

proud of your nation. - Yes, yeah.  People are embarrassed I think.
