Top 10 NETFLIX Series to LEARN ENGLISH | Easy English 119

Hello, welcome to Easy English.

So this week, I thought I'd make a video,

to give you a rundown of the top 10 best series,

in my opinion, on Netflix,

that can help you to learn British English.

To try and be more inclusive,

I've picked 10 ''Netflix Originals'',

which means they've either been produced by ''Netflix'',

or bought by ''Netflix'' and they're distributed all around the world,

so hopefully, everyone of you watching will be able to see

at least one of these 10 series I'm gonna recommend.

So not only did I pick a vast array of styles of series,

you know, I've gone for some dramas, for documentaries,

for comedies, probably a thriller or horror in there somewhere.

But I've also tried to pick series which are

filmed in different areas of Britain,

so you can pick up on dialects and accents and cultural norms.

And so... just so you can see the vast diversity of Britain.

So without further ado,

let's dive in to the first ''Netflix Original''

to help you learn British English.

So the first series I'm going to recommend is;

''The End of the F***ing World'', which is a dark, comedy drama.

And it follows classmates James and Alyssa,

as they escape school and go on the hunt for Alyssa's estranged father.

So based on a comic book of the same name,

James and Alyssa embark on essentially a twisted and dark road trip

with some real dark comedy moments,

searching for the father that ran away when she was just a child.

Now, these are both two neurotic teenagers,

who essentially, are kind of, twisted in their own manner.

Alyssa is very aggressive and has very dark thoughts

and James is a self-convinced psychopath, essentially,

who is sort of building up from killing animals to eventually people.

And so, as the series progresses, so does the violence,

but in a very dark and British comedy kind of, way.

So the series is set in Surrey, which is in the south of England,

just southwest of London.

So you're going to hear lots of neutral,

maybe RP sounding accents.

However, Jessica Barden, who plays Alyssa,

is from Yorkshire, so it's really interesting

to listen to her accent in this series, it's very distinct.

So number two is not actually a series,

it's a documentary and it's called;

''David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet''.

Now, Sir David Attenborough is a true British icon.

We know him best from the BBC,

as he made many documentary series

about comprehensive studies on animal and plant life on Earth.

This is a part autobiographical series,

which follows Sir David Attenborough throughout his childhood,

into his career as an author, biologist and broadcaster,

as he gives an account as to how much has changed in his lifetime

in these small ecosystems around the world.

And he gives a first hand account as to his concerns

as to humanity's impacts on the earth.

He gives his own future predictions and what were to happen

to places such as the Amazon rainforest or the Arctic,

if humanity were to carry on unchanged

Attenborough also provides solutions,

as to how we can combat climate change

and prevent some of these future predictions.

Things such as re-wilding, use of more renewable energy sources,

increasing in education, decreasing in poverty

and bringing in more universal health care to people.

So the third thing I'm going to recommend

on ''Netflix'' for you, is the series;

''After Life'', Written and starred by Ricky Gervais.

So ''After Life'' is a comedy drama following Tony;

Ricky Gervais' character, as he deals with his wife's

recent death to breast cancer.

So this series is handled very delicately by Ricky Gervais,

whose character not only goes through grief,

through the loss of his love,

but also goes through some suicidal thoughts

and the seamless transition from more emotional,

dramatic type, acting, into the comedic side

is handled very well and is quite seamless,

as Ricky Gervais' character Tony,

decides that, through this almost nihilistic approach,

he has gained a superpower, where he will go

and punish the world for his loss.

So this impulsive, devil-may-care attitude,

which Ricky Gervais' character Tony adopts,

comes into question and turns out to be a lot trickier to implement

than he thinks, as he starts to meet some of the more

quirky characters that you will meet throughout the series,

who eventually just, kind of, try to save Tony's old character

that he had before the loss of his wife.

So this series is set in a fictional town called Tambury,

but Ricky Gervais is quite open about his upbringing

being from around the Reading area,

which is sort of, a suburb of London, essentially.

And even ''The Office'' series was set in this area.

And so, you're gonna hear a very neutral, southern accents here.

Now back to the episode.

And so number four is the sitcom;

''Lovesick''.

Which was first shown on ''Channel 4''

and then picked up by ''Netflix''.

It follows a few friends who share a house

in the West End of Glasgow and follows their romantic lives.

The show sets out in sort of, very individual episodes

as Dylan, the main character,

is diagnosed with chlamydia and must, in each episode,

contact his previous sexual partners to inform them of his diagnosis.

The series interchanges between these individual episodes,

where Dylan has flashbacks about his previous partners

that he must go and visit and how their relationship developed

and ultimately failed.

But then the long, overarching part of the series,

is his friendship and relationship with his housemates, Luke and Evie,

who go through many tumultuous times together.

But as the series is set in Glasgow,

you'll see that many of Dylan's ex-partners

have very distinctive Scottish accents.

Okay, so the fifth series I'm going to recommend

is the crime drama series;

''Peaky Blinders''.

So set in Birmingham, just at the end of the First World War,

it follows the youth, urban, crime gang, the Peaky Blinders,

which is loosely based on a gang of the same name,

and their leader, Thomas Shelby.

So this is the perfect series to pick up

on this very distinctive Brummie accent,

which is displayed amazingly by Cillian Murphy.

And there are also London accents in this,

you got some Irish accents in this hugely stacked cast list,

ranging from Cillian Murphy, like I said;

Sam Neill, Paddy Considine, Helen McCrory,

Tom Hardy and Anya Taylor-Joy, just to name a few.

So the sixth series I'm going to recommend is the anthology series;

''Black Mirror'', but specifically,

the first two series which were produced by ''Channel 4'',

before it got picked up by ''Netflix''.

So ''Black Mirror'' is a fantastic science fiction series,

which taps into our collective unease on the modern world.

The standalone episodes are suspenseful, sharp and satirical,

and explore our collective techno-paranoia.

The first two series alone have an amazing cast list,

featuring people like;

Daniel Kaluuya, Domhnall Gleeson and Jodie Whittaker, alone.

So the next series I'm going to pick for you to watch to learn

British English is; ''The Crown''.

''The Crown'' portrays the life of Queen Elizabeth II,

starting from her wedding to Prince Philip;

the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947,

leading up until the 21st century.

This is the best series to get a look-in to the British monarchy.

The first season starting off with a declining British empire

and a forging relationship with legendary Prime Minister

Sir Winston Churchill.

This is the best opportunity you're going to get

to look into the coveted world of power and privilege,

behind the locked doors of Buckingham Palace.

This series also features some acting royalty,

big hitters such as;

Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, Matt Smith,

Helena Bonham-Carter and Charles Dance.

Next up on my list is the crime drama series,

set in the East End of London; ''Top Boy''.

Set in the Summerhouse Estate in the London borough of Hackney,

''Top Boy'' follows the relationship between drug kingpins

Sully and Dushane.

Dushane and Sully's characters are acted magnificently

by the two rappers Ashley Walters, also known as Asher D,

from ''So Solid Crew'' fame.

And Kain Robinson, also known as Kano,

who was a pioneer in grime music.

This series is going to give you a great insight

into the Multicultural London English (MLE),

or Urban British English (UBE) spoken throughout the series.

This is a by-product of immigration

and is spoken by the working class

and the multicultural sections of London.

The next series I'm going to recommend

is a documentary series, for all the football fanatics, called;

''Sunderland 'till I Die''.

This series encapsulates the culture and love of English football

in our country, whilst at the same time,

showing the collapse and capitulation of ''Sunderland Football Club''

as they are relegated from the ''Premier League''.

This series is going to give you a great insight

into the personalities behind football,

but also the humbleness and positivity,

that you get from the fans who turn up every week

to watch their team ultimately, lose a lot of football games.

This series gives you a great insight into the accent and dialect

of the north east of England, specifically Mackems;

a dialect and people based in the Sunderland area.

The last ''Netflix Original'' I suggest you watch isn't a series,

but it's a line up of comedians.

One of the biggest cultural things about Britain is our humour.

So I thought I'd give you my top-tips

into the best British comedians on offer on ''Netflix''.

First, we have the sharp witted, shocking

and often offensive comedian Jimmy Carr.

Secondly, we have the quirky and often surreal James Acaster.

Next, we have the silly and the crass Jack Whitehall.

Then the well-known observational comedian Ricky Gervais.

Next up is the playful and also observational comedian Mo Gilligan.

Last but not least, is the flamboyant, political,

crass, smart thinking Russell Brand.

So there you go,

there's 10 recommendations of ''Netflix Originals'' for you.
