What is the WORST English Food? | Easy English 110

Honestly, I don't think I've ever been that horrified

to see someone eat something.

But, to each their own.

I've tried it once and it'll be last time.

It's coming back as a delicacy,

just as insects are coming as a delicacy.

You know, we have to get used to eating insects soon, haven't we?

Is that right?

I think not everybody likes it.

- And...

But I like it.

What a waste of time, I don't like it.

That was it, then?

- Yeah, that's it, it's it, for me.

Won't make that mistake again.

I won't be eating ''Marmite''.

So today, I'm asking the question;

what is the worst English or British food?

Before we get started, don't forget to like and subscribe.

Here we go.

What is the weirdest or worst food you've ever had?

Oh, this is a while back.

But, I went to a Cornish pub with a few mates

and I saw this one guy have (Stargazy) pie,

which is like a cheesy, mash dish,

with a fish head sticking out the top.

For me, I think it's gotta be chips and gravy.

I know it's a northern thing, but I don't understand it.

I've got friends that eats it down here,

something that I can't really fathom, really.

But, you know, each their own.

What is the worst British food?

I think it's ''Marmite''.

- Right, okay.

I don't like ''Marmite'', no.

I don't see that.

And, as for ''Vegemite'', what the Australians eat.

I mean, that's just a total different scenario, I think.

Brussel sprouts.

I love everything, but Brussels sprouts.

Really?

- Yeah.

What's the most disgusting English meal?

Okay, while I've not had it,

I do recall a dish made of eels.

It's a traditional one and erm...

and another one of tripe, which is cow's stomach.

- Yeah.

And erm... the lining of the cows stomach.

It's weird because, it's a fish head.

It's not the sort of, thing you would think of as food.

But honestly, it must have been quite nice,

because the guy looked quite happy to have it.

Did he even eat the head?

No, he sort of, ate the meat around it.

I don't think he was brave enough,

but he did seem pretty satisfied afterwards.

Oh, so do you think that like, submerged under the pie,

there was the rest of the body?

- Probably, yes.

Okay, and erm...

what was it about it that sort of,

turns you off?

You just...

like the...

It was the head.

- The head.

That's not the thing you think of,

when you think of food; a fish's head.

For anyone doesn't know about this,

can you sort of, describe this sort of,

phenomenon of the north/south chips and gravy thing?

So yeah, you got, I think.

You got your Scotland, you got your midlands, then your south.

I think it's more like, a midlands, like a...

a Wolverhampton/Birmingham thing.

I think it's more of a Brum...

it's definitely a Brummie thing.

I think, definitely more Northern, yeah.

I've got, like I said, I've got friends that have had it,

or still eat it now and I've tried it once

and I just don't get it, really.

Even with KFC's chips and gravy, it's not on.

And, what is... what is gravy, as well?

Explain gravy.

for (a) roast dinner.

That's where it should be,

that's where it should stay, really.

- Yeah.

So for me, I'm more of a chips in mayonnaise...

Can you just tell me like,

what...

what... 'cos, maybe people don't even know a gravy is.

Could you sort of, describe gravy?

(It's) like a stock.

- Yeah.

- Right.

I would say, like a beef stock.

- Yeah.

But thinner than a... thinner than like, yeah...

No, probably a bit thicker, actually,

than you'd put in a casserole.

So like, something between a soup and a stew?

- Yeah.

So, dipping your chips in it, isn't that great, really.

Do you know what ''Marmite'' is?

It's a yeast.

- Oh, you know?

Okay.

- OK.

Yeah, yeast.

Vitamin B.

How do you have ''Marmite''?

How would you eat it?

I actually eat it on a cracker.

- On a cracker?

Yeah.

- And... but you don't like ''Marmite''?

I do like...

- Oh, you do like ''Marmite''?

Yeah, I think it's very healthy - I don't.

You don't like ''Marmite''?

- No.

- Why not?

Well, the taste, it's like, some kind of fish.

Could...

could you describe to people who don't know like,

what ''Marmite'' even is.

Well ''Marmite's'' a yeast extract erm...

sort of, spread, that you would put on toast.

Or maybe, my daughter actually likes it with cheese spread

and ''Marmite'', in a white sandwich;

white ''Hovis'' bread sandwich, which er...

With all the salt in that bread, can't be very good for you.

It's very specific.

- Yes.

- And when...

''Laughing Cow'' as well, not ''Dairylea'', 'cos it spreads better.

So my entry into the worst English food is, actually a dessert.

Which is precariously named spotted dick,

which sounds a bit like a medical condition.

Now, spotted dick is disgusting for two reasons, in my head.

So a key ingredient to spotted dick is called suet,

which I believe is like a white...

paste made from the fat of cows and sheep,

which is particularly disgusting when you think about it.

And so the second is, whilst most cakes

you consider be made in the oven.

Spotted dick is actually steamed.

The steam would come through and cook it into a harder form.

And whilst this steaming isn't particularly disgusting,

you always consider it being quite healthy,

the sight of seeing this pudding...

like,

sweating under a glass jar is really gross.

Also, the look of actually that's the third one.

it's just this... mound of dough with cow fat in it.

So the end result is you get this spotted look,

which is through adding dried fruit,

which is usually some like, kind of, current or raisin,

which explains the spotted part.

(I) don't really know where the dick comes from, though.

Hmm...

Brits are known for being very polite, okay?

So, let's say you come over to my house

and I cook you a big roast dinner.

Are you... am I just going to get... have like,

two plates, just with like, Brussel sprouts left on 'em?

I would probably still eat the Brussel sprouts, just to be polite.

Yeah.

- Really!?

- Yeah, I'll leave...

I'll have...

I'd eat a few and leave a few,

then you‘ll probably see that I've tried and I'd say; ''I'm full up''.

I would lie about it, yeah.

And let's say you were not vegetarian.

Would you try eel soup or eel pie?

I doubt it.

Just the thought of it, you know?

Eels!

- Yeah!

No, no, no.

Just the thought of it would...

Oh, I hope it is dead,

I hope you don't have to kill it yourself!?

It's one of those things that would make you want to...

Yeah, yeah.

And so then, what do you have on your chips, then?

Erm... just chips...

I'm sorry, just mayonnaise and a bit of ketchup.

Like a prawn dressing, really.

I've always had that.

And I think that's enough to go on chips really, personally.

And I know it's each to their own.

People are probably listening to this thinking;

well, everyone's got their own preference.

But, that's defo not one of mine, so.

Leave it for the roast dinners.

Leave it for the northerners.

Yeah, I think that's where it should stay.

Yeah definitely, yeah.

And when was the last time you had ''Marmite''?

Me?

Oh, that would be...

(A) good five or six years ago when I thought;

Come on, let's try it again.

And then realised, actually no.

What a waste of time, I don't like it.

That was it, then?

- Yeah, that's it, it's it, for me.

Won't make that mistake again.

I won't be eating ''Marmite''.

Especially not with cheese spread or peanut butter.

Yeah, I get you with that, that's fair enough.

I think I tried it a few times.

- Yeah.

And everybody is saying, you'll either like it or hate it.

- Right.

I tried second time.

Like, maybe a few years ago,

To see how it is; I didn't like it.

Okay, and when was the last time you had ''Marmite''?

I had (it) recently, maybe two months ago.

Oh really?

- Yeah, on that cracker, it's like a cracker.

For dinner?

For lunch?

For...

It was like a snack.

What about haggis?

I've never thought I could eat haggis.

That's a good shout.

I've never, even seen haggis.

Well, it looks like it's in a bag

and it looks like all different kinds of meat thrown in there,

or God knows what else, you know.

But again.

But that's a delicacy isn't it?

Poor people, food is back in fashion.

And nourishing, there's even offal now.

What is offal?

Offal; liver, kidneys of the animals.

You know, the innards of the animal,

that's in fashion now, as well as a delicacy.
