What is British Humour? | Easy English 84

hello welcome to easy english so today  i'm in brighton and i want to know how  

people would define british humor and  if they have any jokes for me let's go

hit us with it what what joke do you know i  know a little one so um it's uh what do you  

call a pig with three eyes and what  do you call a pig three eyes a pig

actually i didn't accept that  come on mcintyre call me up  

be on the stage in no time that's gone  then let's let's hear it what tell me your  

your jokes that you so i've got what you call a  snowman that has a melt no oh no i just stopped  

i said what do you edit out okay shall go  again then cut start again okay so what do  

you call a snowman that has a tantrum what do  you call a snowman that has a tantrum a meltdown

that was quite a good one tell me your favorite  joke well it's not even a joke it's like true  

story because uh he broke my toilet seat this  morning and i said like when we go to the b and  

q or home base or whatever um as long as you kind  of go in and say it's just a bog standard fitting

and uh how much did did you  have you've done this yeah  

no we haven't been to got the replacement  toilet seat yet so you haven't quite  

we will do that though at some point yeah okay  it'd be good to know how the joke went down  

yeah i'm sure they've heard it many a time  yeah the people being yeah they're sick of it  

a man fell off a sea wall he strained his groin

brace yourselves hit us with a joke okay  why did the one armed man cross the road  

tell me why did the one unknown  to get to the second-hand store

i told you it was terrible  can you think of any like  

even like a knock knock joke that's like  that it's basically oh right at this moment

have you heard the one about um well if you can't  think of a joke then i won't waste anything no  

okay i can't i'll probably walk away and i'll  think yeah you'll come back yeah if you did

like tv comedies really yeah i do i do watch them  in the macintosh show every once in a while but us  

okay that's about stand up and who who would  be your would it be would he be your favorite  

comedian yeah yeah and why is that what's what's  so good about his comedy in particular i feel like  

he's the go-to comedian really he's the one that  gets kind of the crowd involved the most and yeah  

he's the one that it's the the little the little  like you know everyday things that you recognize  

in yourself that he just kind of makes fun of okay  and you just recognize these things in you really  

so would you say he's like an observational  kind of comic yeah i think you'd probably  

describe i didn't know i didn't know it's kind  of a type of comedy but actually when you say  

like that it's it's what i recognize  in him are you um really into comedy  

um no i just like a good dad joke but not  when it actually comes from dad you know

okay uh so you're not into comedy really um  do you not watch any like stand up or anything  

like that well i've seen a bit of family  guy okay so you like your comedy tv shows  

they're all right yeah yeah and do you  the family guy's american right so uh  

there's some distractions going on um do  you prefer american comedy or english comedy  

um i would say i have to prefer english comedy oh  yeah yeah it's a bit less bit less corny yeah ah  

and so what if it's not corny what is it is there  a specific way you can describe english comment um  

it's just throwing back lines back and  forth a bit of british banter i feel like  

yeah yeah yeah before actually um because we  did an episode about what brits think about  

brits and everyone mentioned banter yeah  it's definitely within the culture here  

and we've already sort of had it defined but  how would you define banter um just kind of  

lighthearted jokes really um yeah just kind of  uh meaningless fun really are you fans of comedy  

yeah yeah everyone likes to laugh don't  know yeah and what what kind of comedy  

are you into stand-up comedy or  into more like amusing comedy

are you into comedy do you like comedy do i listen  to it yeah you listen to comedy in what form oh  

television and whatever and do you like comedy  tv movies or do you like stand up tv mainly yeah  

and what what do you watch uh well the all the  old ones 40 towers and things like that but  

uh porridge but um not going out i think is  very good okay yeah specifically all the british  

comedy shows that's right i can't stand  american humor that's interesting and what  

is it what would you say the difference is  between american comedy and british comedy  

well the american comedy always seems very  forced and sort of the laughings very artificial  

um i like i enjoy watching yeah i enjoy watching  comedy we went like two a few weeks ago didn't  

we yeah the comedy we went to the comedy club  i really did some stand-up stuff yeah yeah see  

and um do you have like a favorite stand-up that  you'd go to see like live if there are not really  

just whatever's no i used to like peter kaye  oh yeah yeah but he doesn't really do anything  

anymore does he but no yeah and is that that kind  of because he does that short fast you know yeah  

and like observational stuff right is that kind of  what you like yeah yeah when they think on their  

feet and when they include the audience as well  oh yeah i like jimmy carter sort of does that yeah

he was very clever do you know do you know any  dave allen well no he's tell stories ah but i like  

story jokes yeah they're my favorite if you if you  watch dave allen on youtube yeah he's hilarious  

dave yeah oh irish haven't you heard no no i'm  really into my comedy but oh right obviously not  

well you must look up dave allen because he's  a natural comedian and he's irish pirates yeah  

he's got now he's like a storyteller yeah he tells  a story makes up yeah uh yeah it's observational  

yeah that's my favorite yeah yeah well you'd love  him i'm sure did you like tommy cooper well tommy  

cooper was funny wasn't it yeah if you've watched  him yeah for sure yeah yeah yeah he's uh because  

i like that he would tell actually pretty decent  jokes sort of hidden between his tricks yeah well  

his these tricks were the failures weren't they  which were hilarious yeah it was actually kind of  

hilarious but he was very clever genius really  yeah because he could do him properly but he got  

he got the laughs through the failures that's  the thing how would you define english comedy  

you kind of mentioned a few characteristics um  sarcastic ironic self-deprecation deprecating  

doesn't take it silly it doesn't take itself  too seriously um yeah it's normally laughing  

at the stupidness of britishness almost so yeah  quite self-deprecating and laughing at ourselves  

i suppose do you like british comedy or is  it more american that you're into um i'm not  

really fussy to be honest you're gonna make me  laugh you're gonna make me laugh and do you see  

a difference between british humor and american  people i think yeah yeah i think i would say that  

english comedy can be a lot more dry oh yeah i  was gonna say yeah in what way like quite brutal  

um i thought you find things funny but  if you're not english you wouldn't get it  

oh okay yeah yeah and it can come across a bit  bruised yeah sometimes but i don't think it's it's  

not rude but it's like rudeness but in a funny  way so ladders oh ladders don't mention ladders  

i fell off a 50-foot ladder once i was  so lucky i was only on the bottom rung
