I'm sorry, you probably don't know what that means and it's really rude of you, Ezekiel,

to be drinking again, so I'm going to have to teach you about shut and some phrasal verbs

and I apologize, okay, and I'll tell you what this means afterwards.

Eat this up, I'm going to fire you.

Okay, shut.

Shut, right?

Basically a verb.

Shut the door, shut this, blah, blah, blah.

But when we mean shut, it means to close, basically to close something, right?

When somebody shut the windows or shut the door, what do you do?

You close them, right?

Keep things out or lock it down, right?

You keep things out or lock it down.

So I'm going to show you some words that we use shut for and have the meaning close or

end.

Okay?

Close or end, kind of go together.

So let's go.

We're going to look at this, off, down, out, and my personal favorite actually, my girlfriend's

personal favorite, up.

Okay?

So we're going to show you how we add this particular verb with these prepositions, okay,

which by the way, I'm sure if you've seen our lessons before, these are called phrasal

verbs.

All right?

So we're going to show how the verb shut is going to work with these prepositions to create

different meanings.

You ready?

What this means.

Okay?

What does this mean?

Shut your pie hole.

Okay.

So, phrasal verbs with shut.

So if we know what it means to close or end, now I did a lesson once before with up.

And up, it means to increase, right, or complete.

So let's do shut up, the first one, okay, shut up.

Sorry, every time I say that, it makes me laugh, shut up.

I don't use it because in Canada or North America, or even in England, you say shut

up.

Ouch.

Okay.

So you don't want to get hit.

But shut up means to close, right, your mouth.

Stop talking.

Up, remember?

Up means complete from another lesson, right?

Shut up.

Stop talking.

And it doesn't always have to be rude.

You can just say we were at the meeting and you just shut up all of a sudden, means you

just stop talking.

But if someone tells you to shut up, take your hand, roll it up into a fist, bring it

back.

So this one, shut up, usually means stop talking, all right?

Now I gave you a couple other ones, right?

Now we said shut down.

Now a lot of you guys are tech heads, right?

Now down also has a meaning, it's in decrease or end, right?

Now in this case, shut down, if you're watching me, you're probably watching off of a device

that plays electronic imagery.

So what you must do is shut it down immediately before the virus attacks your computer.

Shut it down.

And stop, usually a process, right?

So we're talking about computers, so this is the most common.

You shut down your computer at the end of your workday, right?

Shut down the factory, when the factory's no longer working, we shut it down to end,

end or complete, right?

End or complete a process.

Shut up.

Stop talking, you idiot, stop now.

Shut down.

We're going to have to shut down the roads, it's a mess out here, over, all right?

Now I gave you two other ones, did I not?

Of course I did.

We go for the big guns.

Here we go, shut off.

This one is usually used for power, you know, electricity or water.

Okay, you're outside, well it depends where you live.

In Canada we have these rolling green lawns, you know, grass all over the place.

And people like to water their lawns and stand proudly watering their lawn and their flowers.

But when you're done, you can't just walk around with water everywhere.

You have to shut it off.

It's the sound it makes when you go to the wall and you turn off the water.

It's really nasty.

But you shut it off, so you shut off the water, the water stops, right?

Now you have to shut off the electricity.

For instance, let's just say up here there's a light bulb.

I want to change it.

If I forget to change it off, yeah, so you shut off the electricity and I'm okay.

If I don't, I could be killed.

So you learn that one.

Shut off the electricity, I'm about to fix the lights, yeah?

Or shut off the water, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop.

Too much water, right?

Shut off.

And similarly for power, okay, and water, okay, it means stop them, stop the flow.

Another word for flow, movement.

Stop the flow or movement of them, okay?

Shut off.

Now, Canada, eh?

That's where I'm from.

Well, I'm not from Canada, but that's another story, the origin story.

Anyway, in Canada, eh, we like to play hockey.

So we have these big sticks and sometimes you're playing the game and you can't score.

I know it sounds Scottish, but I don't know how Canadians are supposed to sound.

Anyway, but you can't score.

You try and try and try, but no goals.

Or we're in Italian, okay?

Italian, we're playing soccer, eh?

We try and kick, but we can't get the ball in the goal, okay?

You can't get the ball in the goal.

The guy keeps stopping.

So at the end of the game, we say there's a shutout.

It means no goals were scored.

So it means the score would be zero.

You cannot get the ball or the puck in the goal, all right?

The other team is stopping you.

So if you like to be sportsy, you know, you like sports, you want to sound cool, you go,

I was watching the soccer game, eh?

Say, eh, like a Canadian, eh?

And there was like a shutout.

They didn't score, eh?

Only for hockey, though.

If you say it for anything else, they'll think you're crazy, all right?

So a shutout is usually used for, in Canada, all right, for sports, all right, for sports.

And it means no goals.

No goals were scored.

But a shutout is really cool because remember I said no goals, you weren't allowed to get

in there, get in, really, you know, if you know what that means, smile, just pretend

you don't know.

You couldn't get in there.

You couldn't score.

But you can also say this for something else.

Not being able to get in or penetrate, it also means you weren't able to get inside.

Now, a lot of times, sometimes, well, not a lot of times, but sometimes when, let's

just say there's a meeting or there's a conversation and people won't let you talk, so they're

all talking and you're trying, I want to say, I want to say, they turn their back and won't

talk to you, you can say, I was shut out of the conversation, not allowed to participate.

Just like you cannot score, you're not really playing the game if you don't score, you were

not allowed to participate.

If you're shut out of the meeting, it means you came to the door, the meeting, the door

is locked, you're like, oh, I'm shut out of the meeting, I cannot go in there, I cannot

enter.

Right?

So you cannot enter.

So, shut out can be for sports, means no goals, if you like sports, A, you have to put that

first.

But really, a lot of times, its meaning is not allowed in.

And that could be for a conversation, or a meeting, okay, so a conversation or a meeting,

so check out these meetings, I'll be right back, moonwalking.

Shut out means to stop talking, shut down means to end or complete a process, i.e. shut

down your computer, but not during the lesson.

Shut off is usually for power or water, stop the flow of these particular things.

And finally, shut out is for sports, to not score goals, or not allowed in a conversation

or a meeting.

Hole is usually a black area that nothing exists.

your pie hole.

The rude Ezekiel, I noticed he snuck another beer, was telling me to shut my pie hole because

he's had too many.

That means shut your mouth or shut up, it's rude, but just for fun, check with your English

teacher and just say, hey, teacher, shut your pie hole, make sure you laugh when you say

it, go, if they say, why, do you have pie available, leave immediately, get in the teacher.

If they say shut, if they say get out, then you have a good teacher, too bad, they will

never teach you again.

I'm joking.

Anyway, look, I hope you had fun, that's shut, right, means close, we've shown how you can

close, right, close or end, shut up, stop talking, shut down, complete a process, shut

off, also close or end, and shut out, not allowed, or closed to you, right, closed to

you, cool.
