as to

why it seems Americans talk too fast?

미국인들이 너무 빨리 말하는 이유에 대한 쉬운 설명이 있다고 말하면 어떨까요 ?

Clearly, those are the same words,

분명히 같은 단어이지만 미국인이

but they sound very, very different when spoken

말할 때

by an American

and when spoken by a French person.

와 프랑스인이 말할 때 매우 다르게 들립니다.

The weak syllables aren’t fully pronounced

and they all have the same sound

Compare how these phrases sound when spoken by a lovely French person,

사랑스러운 프랑스인이 말할 때

and when spoken by

an American with a horrible American accent.

끔찍한 미국식 억양을 가진 미국인이 말할 때 이 표현들이 어떻게 들리는지 비교해보세요.

Do you hear all those weak “uh”s?

Did you hear all those schwas?

And that’s one reason why it’s hard to understand Americans when they speak.
