[POSTCARD FROM THE STATES] A typically American experience: A drive-in

Hey, ambassadors, Christina here.

And today I wanna take you with me to a place called Sonic.

It's kind of a typically American thing.

It's a fast food place.

But it's a little different from McDonald's

because it is a drive-in,

which means it's not drive-through now,

because you probably know that, but a drive-in.

You'll see what it is and how it's a little different

and how it is kind of a typical American thing,

because we love our cars so much.

And anything that we can do in a car

without having to get out, like a drive-through bank,

a drive-through fast food,

a drive-through pharmacy, we do it in the car,

and we also eat.

So let's go and have a look at the drive-in.

All right, so we're pulling up to Sonic.

It's the drive-in.

Maybe you saw some cars sitting there

at the stands, I guess we could call 'em.

Let's see.

So we're gonna go ahead and pull in somewhere.

Where can we park?

We're gonna pull in right here.

Let's see, yeah.

Here's the menu.

So we've got some drinks.

Up here, we've got things like kids' meals,

burgers, hot dogs, snacks, like, what do we have?

Mozzarella sticks, onion rings, tater tots.

And then, of course, breakfast,

because we also eat breakfast at a fast food place.

That's a pretty common thing.

And then things like milkshakes,

ice cream, things like that.

Me, I think I'm just gonna get a drink over there,

a cherry limeade.

So I'm gonna order by pressing this button.

Let's see.

- [Waitress] How can I help you?

- [Christina] Yeah, let me get a medium

diet cherry limeade, please.

- [Waitress] All right, what else can I get you?

- [Christina] That's gonna be it.

(waitress mumbles) Thank you.

- [Waitress] You're welcome.

- Okay, so I've placed my order,

and now I'm actually gonna just get my money

so that I can pay her when she comes out.

- Hey. - Hey, how are you doing?

- [Waitress] Good.

Your limeade. - Okay.

I'm sorry, I don't have any change.

I'm really sort about that. - That's okay.

That's no problem.

- [Waitress] Here you go, 17.83 is your change.

- Okay. - Thank you.

- Thank you so much. - Have a great day.

- You too, thanks, bye.

Okay, so I didn't have any change,

so I had to pay with a $20 bill,

and then, of course, I got lots of change back.

I'll just put that away.

And now I've got my medium cherry limeade.

It's about the size of my head.

But it's basically, what is a cherry limeade?

It's got cherry syrup in it, it's got lime syrup,

and I think the rest is just sparkling water

or some sort of carbonated drink, but it's really good.

So I'm gonna go enjoy that

on the way to the post office now.
