Yes, a super short message like

“I”m absent from July 13th to August 3rd”

is understandable,

but

it’s not very friendly.

It’s too direct,

like you just couldn’t be bothered

to make an effort to write a real away message.

You know you can do better.

First, we’ll see a basic structure that’s

easy to follow

and includes all of the information your correspondant needs.

Then we’ll look an example that you can copy right from this video.

Here we go!

First,

thank the person who’s writing to you.

I know, it’s just an email,

and it probably creates work for you,

but remember we love politeness in English!

Begin your email with:

Second, say when you’ll be absent.

A simple sentence like

You may want to say something about how much access to emails you’ll have.

For better or for worse,

a lot of Americans stay connected to work during their vacation,

checking their emails on their iPhones, for example.

And they might expect you to do so too.

Perhaps there’s someone the sender can contact while you’re absent.

If this is the case, you can add

at the end of that sentence.
