Formule de politesse en anglais : Terminer un mail

In your mails in English, what do you write just above the signature? Sincerely? Best regards? Thanks?

Today we’ll look at what you can put at the end of your email, and what you should avoid.

You ready?

First, this part of the emall is called "the closing salutation." The "closing salutation" because

it "closes" your message.

And in your closing salutation, First let's look at the expressions that you should avoid...

“Thanks for your consideration”

This is a bit too formal for most emails. You going to seem cold and distant.

That's my best cold and distant face.

And if it's in an email for a job search, it will seem as if you lack confidence.

C’est pas bien de manquer de confiance face à un recruteur…

Also, Avoid Yours truly:

This is ok if you're 10 years old and you’re writing a letter to your best friend.

But, If it's in email to a colleague, or to your manager ...

it's not so good. Now

And you can give the impression of being "fake". Fake it's superficial “fake".

Another one to avoid, Sincerely Yours:

What are writing, a love letter? Nope!

This expression is old fashioned—veillote—old fashioned and it's much too formal. For every day emails.

Unless you're looking to add a touch of "Old World"charm to your emails.

But, In general, that's not the case ...

If today you are using one of these expressions in your emails, I suggest you replace it with one of the following

closing salutation:

Best or Regards:

This is the basic closing greetings. Short, neutral, efficient. Best or Regards.

Other good ones: Best regards or Kind Regards: These are especially good for people that you don’t know to well.

Some people thing that these are a little more formal than "Best" and "Regards"

but there are still part of the basic closing salutation.

Sincerely:

Ya, Why not...

sometimes, and when you truly sincere. For example, if you write to compliment someone.

Pour donner un compliment—to compliment someone.

But for everyday emails, Sincerely can have the same effect as "Sincerely Yours"

Sincerely Yours

Thanks:

This is great when you really want to thank someone. But in a basic everyday mail ...

mmmm ... .

there are other choices that are better. But if someone really did something for you,

Thanks, Thanks so much, and Many thanks are all good. They’re friendly and sincere.

Just a recap:

Best ou Regards

Best regards ou Kind regards

Sincerely when you're truly sincere, for example with compliments

Thanks, Thanks so much, And Many thanks when you thank someone for a service

And you can use these closing salutation in mmmm..., let's say 98% of your emails. More or less…
