Learn the English Phrases "sight unseen" and "out of sight, out of mind"

In this English lesson, I wanted

the English phrase sight unseen.

영어 구문 'sight unseen'을 배우는 데 도움을 드리고 싶습니다.

Now we use this when we're talking

우리는 아직 살펴보지도 않은 물건을 사는 것에 대해 이야기할 때 이 표현을 사용합니다

about buying something

that we haven't looked at.

Here's an example.

예를 들어 보겠습니다.

If I was to go online

on Facebook Marketplace, it's

페이스북 마켓플레이스에 접속하면 중고품을 구매할

a popular place to go when you're

때 자주 이용하는 사이트입니다

trying to buy something used.

And if I saw a car and I called

그리고 제가 차를 보고

the person and I said, I'm going

그 사람에게 전화해서 인터넷

to send you $10,000 over

으로 그 차를 1만 달러에 사겠다고 말했다면

the Internet for that car, I would

, 저는

be buying it sight unseen.

그 차를 보지도 않고 사는 셈이 됩니다.

What that means is I didn't

즉, 저는

go and look at the car

before I bought it.

차를 사기 전에 차를 직접 보지 않았다는 뜻입니다.

If I saw a house online and the price

만약 온라인에서 집을 보고 가격이

was really good, and if I was

정말 좋고, 제가

a multimillionaire, which I'm not,

백만장자가 아니라면, 부동산

I might call the realtor and say,

중개인에게 전화해서

I want to buy that house.

그 집을 사고 싶다고 말할 수도 있을 겁니다.

And I would then buy it sight unseen.

그러면 나는 그것을 보지 않고도 사곤 했습니다. 즉,

Meaning that I didn't even bother

나는

to go and look at the house

집이 어떻게

to see what it looked like.

생겼는지 보려고도 하지 않았다는 뜻입니다.

I bought it sight unseen.

The other phrase I wanted

싶은 또 다른 문구는 '

to teach you today is the phrase out

of sight out of mind.

눈에서 멀어지면 마음에서도 멀어진다'는 문구입니다.

When there are no cookies

in the house, I don't eat cookies

집에 쿠키가 없으면 쿠키를 먹지 않아요. 눈에 보이지 않는

because when something is out

것은

of sight, it's not in your mind,

마음에도 없는 것이고, 눈에

it's out of sight, out of mind.

보이지 않으면 마음에서도 사라지는 것이기 때문이죠.

If I see cookies,

쿠키를 보면

then I want to eat cookies.

쿠키를 먹고 싶어져요.

So it's best for me.

그러니 나에게는 그게 가장 좋은 것 같아요.

Let me shift a little bit here.

여기서 조금 다른 이야기를 해 보겠습니다.

It's best for me if things are out

If I don't see cookies, if I

쿠키가 보이지 않으면,

don't see cake, if I don't see

donuts, then I don't crave

So to review, when you buy something

sight unseen, it means you buy

보지 않고 물건을 사는 것은, 보지 않고 사는 것을 뜻합니다

it without going to look at it.

It's always best to look

at something before you buy it.

구매하기 전에 뭔가를 자세히 살펴보는 것이 가장 좋습니다.

But sometimes you might

하지만 때로는

buy it sight unseen.

보지 않고도 구매할 수도 있습니다.

And then when something is out

그리고 무언가가

of sight, out of mind,

시야에서 사라지고, 마음에서 사라지면,

it means you can't see it.

그것을 볼 수 없다는 뜻이죠.

So then you don't think about it.
