Learn the English Phrase MADE IN THE SHADE and the word SHADES

In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn

the English phrase made in the shade.

Now there's two ways to say this.

You can say, he has it made in the shade,

or he's got it made in the shade.

And when you say this about someone,

it means that they have lots of money

and that life is really really nice for them.

Maybe they've worked their entire life

and now they're retired.

And they have enough money

to live really really comfortably.

You would say wow, he's got it made in the shade.

Or he has it made in the shade right now

because he has lots of money saved up,

and maybe he's getting lots of money from his pension.

Maybe you know someone who won the lottery,

and you might say wow, they won the lottery,

they won $2 million, and now they have it made in the shade.

Or now they've got it made in the shade,

which means they don't have to work anymore,

they don't have to worry about money anymore.

Basically, they have everything they need

to survive and to live a really comfortable

and enjoyable life.

So, I don't have it made in the shade,

but I am sitting in the shade.

And I just thought of this word, this isn't a phrase,

normally I teach phrases on this channel,

but in English the slang word for sunglasses is shades.

Yesterday in my members-only video on my other channel,

I talked about how I had a pair of sunglasses

that I bought a number of years ago,

this is the pair of sunglasses I was talking about.

It's a little cracked, it's getting a little old,

but they still work.

In fact, this lens has a whole bunch of cracks in it,

but I still like it.

So these are the shades that I wear almost on a daily basis.

So let's review, if you say that someone has

it made in the shade, or someone's got it made

in the shade, basically you're saying they have lots

of money and they can live a really nice, comfortable life.

And if you are looking for your sunglasses,

you can say where are my shades?

Hey, have you seen my shades?

Jen, have you seen my shades anywhere?

That's actually exactly what I said yesterday,

and they were actually on my head.

So anyways, hopefully those two,

or this phrase and this word were new for you,

and you were able to learn something new.

Let's read a comment from a previous video.

This is from yesterday's video.

This is from Maz, and Maz says,

"If I had my time over again,

"I would have liked to be homeschooled,

"some of our teachers were too mean."

So yesterday's lesson, I talked about school again,

back to school.

Oh, actually maybe that wasn't yesterday.

Anyways, I forget yesterday's topic,

but Maz basically is saying teachers were mean.

My reply was one of the reasons I became

a teacher was because some of my teachers were mean as well.

I wanted to change things a bit.

So, this is actually quite true.

When I was in grade school, when I was in elementary school,

grades one through eight, so that is about age six

to about age 12 or 13 here in Canada.

I had a few teachers who were not very kind.

I had a teacher who liked to hit kids

with a yard stick when they were bad.

I had another teacher who was just not very nice as well.

They were very very mean people.

In English, we would say they had no business being

in the classroom.

They did not have the right kind of personality

to be good teachers.

And it made me even as a young child,

you might think I'm a very kind and pleasant person,

but these teachers made me very angry

and very determined.

So later in life when I thought about becoming a teacher,

I knew that I would never be that kind of teacher,

I would never be mean to students.

I am, how would you say, strict when I need to be.

And I'm very organized when I need to be.

But I try to never ever be mean to students.

I think you probably see that a little bit here

on this YouTube channel.

So if you're a teacher out there, be kind and teach all

of your students well.
