Learn the English Phrases SECOND WIND and TO BE WINDED - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

In this English lesson,

I wanted to help you learn the English phrase second wind.

When you get your second wind,

it means that you get energy after doing

something that took a lot of energy.

Let's imagine that you were walking for most of the day

and you're really, really tired,

and you're out with a friend and your friend says,

"Let's keep going."

You could say,

"Oh, I'm out of energy.

Let's take a little break

and then maybe I'll get my second wind."

When you get your second wind,

it's like getting a little burst

of energy when you least expect it.

Sometimes when Jen and I go out,

we walk for a very long time

and I get a little bit tired,

but if I wait a little bit,

I usually get my second wind,

and then I can use that energy to keep walking again.

So when you get your second wind,

it's like you get an extra little bit

of energy when you were least expecting it.

I wanna talk about another phrase, too,

with the word wind in it.

I'm talking about wind because

in yesterday's video it was quite windy,

and today it's a little bit windy as well.

In English, when you say that you are winded,

when we talk about the phrase to be winded,

it means that you're out of breath.

When I was young,

I could run really fast,

but when I was done running,

I was always winded.

Right now, if I run really fast

even for a short amount of time,

by the time I stop running,

I am out of breath and I am winded.

So basically if you exert yourself,

if you do something strenuous,

there's some new words for you,

if I was to run the 100 meter dash right now,

at the end of it,

I would be very, very winded.

So just to repeat,

when you get your second wind,

it means you get a little bit of energy

after doing something for a long time,

and when you're tired,

and then suddenly you feel energetic again.

And when you are winded,

it means that you've done something

like run for a little bit

and you just don't have as much breath as normal.

You're having trouble breathing, like.

(panting)

That's what it would sound like if you were winded.

Let's look at one of the comments from yesterday.

I actually wanna look at two comments today

because I got two really good ones.

The first one is from Daniel Aparecido Biazi Galdino.

I hope I said your name right, Daniel.

All right, Daniel says,

"Last weekend I was upset 'cause."

By the way,

'cause is a slang way of saying because.

"'Cause I didn't get the new job I was looking for,

but today I am fired up to learn English.

which means to be excited about something,

from yesterday because I really liked this one.

Stephane Stephane or Stephanie Stephanie,

I'm not sure if I'm saying your name correctly,

but Stephane says,

"Beware the snakes in the weeds."

Yesterday in the lesson,

I was walking through some weeds,

and I just wanna say my response was this,

we only have one type of snake in my part of Canada

and it is very small and not poisonous.

So I know many of you,

by the way, Stephane, thank you so much for that comment,

and thank you for the warning,

but I know many of you live in parts

of the world where there are dangerous snakes,

where there are venomous snakes.

I happen to live in a place

where there is one kind of snake.

It's about this long,

it's called a garter snake,

and it's not poisonous.

It's just completely safe.

So one of the things that I really

like about where I live in Canada

is the fact that there is only one kind of snake,

and it's not poisonous or venomous.

That's really, really nice

because I'm actually afraid of snakes.

I don't like snakes at all.
