Learn the English Phrases TO SORT SOMETHING OUT and OUT OF SORTS - An English Lesson with Subtitles

In this English lesson

I wanted to help you learn the English phrase

to sort something out.

This usually means that you need to understand a problem

and then solve it.

If my brother said to me,

Hey, can you come over today and help me with something,

I could respond and say,

yes but not right away

because I need to sort something out.

That might mean that I have a problem.

Maybe there's a pipe leaking in my basement

and I have to figure out why it's leaking.

I have to understand why it's leaking

and then I need to fix it.

So when you say to someone

that you need to sort something out,

it means that you have some kind of problem

you need to understand that problem

and then you need to solve it.

So hopefully you don't have a lot of things today

that you have to sort out.

The second phrase I wanted to teach you today

is the phrase out of sorts.

If I say that I'm feeling out of sorts

it means that I'm feeling not normal.

I might be feeling grouchy or unhappy.

I might be feeling just a little bit blah,

that's another word we use in English.

But when you're feeling out of sorts

you're basically saying

you aren't your normal happy self.

The other day, I was trying to make a video

and I was having trouble talking.

And I said,

Oh I'm just feeling a little bit out of sorts today.

The wind was bothering me that day.

I couldn't get my camera set up right.

I was feeling frustrated.

I was a little grouchy and annoyed.

So I described it by saying that I was feeling out of sorts.

So when you're feeling out of sorts,

you're just not feeling your normal happy self.

So to explain one more time,

when you sort something out

it means that you have a problem.

You need to understand the problem,

you need to figure out the problem

and then you need to solve it.

And when you are feeling out of sorts,

it means you're just not feeling like

your normal happy self.

Hopefully your normal self is a very happy person.

Anyways, let's look at a comment from another video.

This comment is from Iryna,

and Iryna says,

"My English is as good as it gets

but I hope it will be better in the future.

I do realize that the vocabulary I've learned so far

will not stay in my head for good,

and I need to practice it all the time."

So excellent use Iryna of the two phrases from that lesson.

This is from the other day,

the phrase as good as it gets,

and the phrase for good, perfect use.

My response was

awesome use of both phrases Iryna, good work.

So I like to see that,

it's really cool when you guys in the comments

sometimes try to use the phrases.

It's really neat to see that you see the phrase

or you've learned the phrase that I've taught,

and you try to learn it.

I was going to mention again too that

when you practice the phrase right away,

it's just a good idea.

Practicing in the comments is good.

But if you have an English tutor

that you meet with once a week,

it would be really good

if you try to use these phrases with them.

Because I'll be honest

in the comments most of you use the phrases

that I teach correctly,

but sometimes some of you do make small mistakes

and I don't have time to correct everybody.

In fact, I'd usually don't correct people

because it's just...

I feel like you need to be comfortable speaking

and not always having your sentences corrected.

So I would say in the comments,

90% of the time everyone uses the phrases

that I teach correctly,

But sometimes there are a few small mistakes.

So anyways, I think that's just a great thing to do

when you learn a phrase.

And in order to remember these phrases,

I know some of you have said,

Oh it's so hard to remember all these phrases.

The best way to remember anything

is to use it right away,

and to use it a few times in the next few days

after you learn it.

I've said that before

a number of times on my other channel as well.

One of the best ways to learn new vocabulary

and new phrases,

learn it once,

use it a few times over the next few days

and you will hopefully remember it for a very long time.
