Inspector (thinking): MY INITIAL ENQUIRIES ONLY SERVED TO CONFIRM THAT...

Inspector (thinking): THIS IS CLEARLY A JOB FOR A VERY EXPERIENCED DETECTIVE.

Inspector (thinking): BUT FIRST, I HAD AN IMPORTANT DIY JOB TO FINISH...

Best Man: INSPECTOR? Are you OK?

Inspector (thinking): OH NO! QUICK DISTRACT HIM...

Inspector: Err, yes, just coming. Can I have a cup of tea?

Best Man: Tea? Oh, OK.

Inspector: GROAN... GRUNT... That's better!

Inspector (thinking: NOW I COULD CONTINUE MY INVESTIGATIONS.

Inspector (thinking): I NEEDED TO ASK THE WEDDING GUESTS EXACTLY WHEN THEY LAST SAW THE RING.

Inspector (thinking): AND IF ANY OF THEIR STORIES DIDN'T MATCH...

Inspector (thinking): I DECIDED TO START WITH THE MOST TROUBLESOME PERSON FIRST, THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE.

Inspector: A word, madam.

M.O.B: May I help you, Inspector???

Inspector (thinking): JUST AS I EXPECTED: SHE WAS BEING VERY DIFFICULT.

Inspector: Yes, when did you...

Inspector: Oh, bride, tea, lovely, thank you

M.O.B: Inspector!

Inspector: When did you last see the ring?

M.O.B: Inspector. I am the mother of the bride.

M.O.B: So, of course, I was arranging the flowers on the suits of the groom and the best man

M.O.B: I am an expert in the art of flowers you know.

Inspector (thinking): REALLY, FLOWER ARRANGING, HOW VERY INTERESTING...

Inspector: Did you see the ring?

M.O.B: Of course I saw the ring inspector!

M.O.B: The best man kept it in his jacket pocket.

M.O.B: He showed it to the groom.

M.O.B: It was in a small red plastic box.

Inspector (thinking): SHE REALLY WAS A VERY DIFFICULT WOMAN...

Inspector (thinking): BUT THROUGH HARD WORK AND PATIENCE, I HAD MANAGED TO GET THE INFORMATION I NEEDED.

Inspector (thinking): THE BEST MAN KEPT THE RING IN A SMALL RED PLASTIC BOX IN HIS JACKET POCKET...

Inspector (thinking): BUT COULD ANYONE BACK UP HER STORY?

Inspector (thinking): TIME TO TALK TO THE GROOM.

Inspector: And you!!! When did you last see the ring?

Groom: Me Inspector??

Groom: Well, err... well...,

Groom: let me think,

Groom: I was talking to the best man.

Groom: He showed me the ring.

Groom: It was in a small blue plastic box,

Groom: which he kept in his jacket pocket.

Inspector (thinking): HMMM. VERY INTERESTING.

Inspector (thinking): HMMM. VERY INTERESTING.

Inspector (thinking): BUT WHAT DID THE BRIDE SEE?

Inspector: You!!! Bride. When did you last see the ring?

Bride: I was fixing my hair and my mother was fixing the flowers for the best man and the groom.

Bride: I saw the best man take a large red plastic box...

Bride: out of his pocket.

Bride: He opened it and showed my wedding ring to the groom.

Bride: Inspector, you will find my ring, won't you??

Inspector (thinking): STILL ASKING TRICKY QUESTIONS I SEE AND WHY DOES SHE KEEP CRYING ALL THE TIME?

Inspector (thinking): NEXT ON MY LIST: THE BEST MAN.

Inspector: And you!!!!

All: Me?

Inspector: No, not you, you!

All: Me?

Inspector: No....

Inspector: you. Best man.

Best Man: Who me?

Inspector: Yes you. When did you last see the ring?

Best Man: Ah, well, I was talking to the groom.

Best Man: The ring was in a small red wooden box.

Best Man: I kept it my jacket pocket. I showed it to the groom. That's the last time I saw it.

Inspector (thinking): JUST AS I THOUGHT: ANOTHER SLIPPERY CHARACTER.

Inspector (thinking): I COULD SEE I WOULD HAVE TO KEEP ALL MY WITS ABOUT ME. I NEEDED TO THINK AND SOMEWHERE TO DO IT --

Inspector (thinking): BUT I KNEW I COULDN'T GO BACK TO THE BATHROOM...

Inspector (thinking): THEN I SPOTTED THE SOLUTION...

Inspector (thinking): THE GARDEN.

Inspector (thinking): EACH ONE OF THESE PEOPLE HAD TOLD ME THEIR STORY...

Inspector (thinking): BUT SOMETHING WAS NOT QUITE RIGHT...

Inspector (thinking): WHAT WAS IT? WHAT COULD IT BE??

Inspector (thinking): IT CAME TO ME SUDDENLY, AS IF IN A DREAM...

Inspector (thinking): BUT I KNEW IT WAS NO DREAM.

Inspector (thinking): NO, IT WAS YEARS OF EXPERIENCE COUPLED WITH NATURAL DETECTIVE INSTINCT

Inspector (thinking): THAT MADE ME REALISE THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM HAD MADE A MISTAKE IN THEIR STORY.

Inspector (thinking): THE GROOM SAID THE BOX WAS BLUE,

Inspector (thinking): BUT EVERYONE ELSE SAID IT WAS RED.

Inspector (thinking): THE BRIDE SAID THE BOX WAS LARGE,

Inspector (thinking): BUT EVERYONE ELSE SAID IT WAS SMALL.

Inspector (thinking): THE BEST MAN SAID THE BOX WAS WOODEN,

Inspector (thinking): BUT EVERYONE ELSE SAID IT WAS MADE OF PLASTIC.
