Hello, my name is Kim-Su Young and I come from South Korea.

I have a question about a funny sound I can hear when English speakers say certain words  

together. For example, 'the end' sounds something like 'the yend' with the Y sound in the middle. I want to  

stop saying 'the end' and start saying 'the end'. Can you help me BBC Learning English?

Ooh, no no no no no no no no no no.

The end. Now what do you notice about  the final sound of the first word, 'the',  

and the beginning of the second word, 'end'?

Hmm... well, they're both vowel sounds. Now in English  

when the first word ends in a vowel sound and  the next word begins with a vowel sound, we link  

them together with another sound, in this case  'y'. The end. The end.  

Oh, but wait, wait, wait, stop. 

It's not quite the end yet - there's more. Now if the first word ends in the sounds 'ee', 'i' or 'a', then the  

linking sound is 'y'.

Er, so, Tim, are you happy about having to work overtime?

Oh well, you know what they say: another day, another dollar.

But, if the first word ends in the sounds 'o' or 'oo' 

the linking sound is a little bit different. Now  see if you can tell what it is.  

Oh, and Tim, are you going to throw away that mouldy sandwich on your desk? I mean, it's really starting to smell.

Oh, sorry about that Tim. Yeah, you often have to tell me about my mouldy sandwiches. I'll try to be tidier in future.

Did you get it? Yes: the linking sound is 'w' and that is about it.
