How to use too, so, either, neither, nor in your daily English conversations

Are you using the expression 'me too' too  often in your daily conversations?

Sometimes, that's actually the wrong expression.

And, sometimes you can find a better alternative.

Okay! Let's start by looking at an example of  when we say 'me too'.

OK! Vamos começar vendo um exemplo de quando dizemos "eu também".

So, someone has said to you:

Então, alguém já disse para você:

I'm interested in antique furniture.

eu me interesso por móveis antigos.

And, you're also interested in antique furniture.

E você também se interessa por móveis antigos.

You can simply say:

Você pode simplesmente dizer:

Me too.

Eu também.

Now, you may very occasionally hear:

Agora, você pode muito ocasionalmente ouvir:

I too.

eu também.

That's very formal.

Isso é muito formal.

It's grammatically correct. But, it's very formal.  I would avoid that.

Está gramaticalmente correto. Mas, é muito formal. Eu evitaria isso.

Just stick with 'me too'.

Apenas fique com 'eu também'.

Now, let's look at some alternatives.

Agora, vamos ver algumas alternativas.

One good one is:

Uma boa é:

Same here.

o mesmo aqui.

It's simple, and it works every time.

É simples e funciona sempre.

But, two things that you must absolutely avoid  is using 'also' and 'as well' in this expression.

Mas, duas coisas que você deve absolutamente evitar é usar 'também' e 'também' nesta expressão.

Although, they're synonyms for 'too', they don't  fit here.

Embora sejam sinônimos de "também", não cabem aqui.

So, don't say:

Então não diga:

Me also

Eu também

And don't say:

E não diga:

Me as well

Eu também

Right! Let's look at two more alternatives.

Certo! Vejamos mais duas alternativas.

These are short sentences that you create using the verb in the original sentence.

São frases curtas que você cria usando o verbo na frase original.

Now, here the verb is 'am'. So, we use that:

Agora, aqui o verbo é 'am'. Então, usamos isso:

I'm interested in antique furniture.

estou interessado em móveis antigos.

I am too.

Eu também.

Or:

Ou:

So am I.

Eu também.

Now, notice that if you start with 'so', we need a subject verb inversion.

Agora, observe que se você começar com 'so', precisamos de uma inversão de sujeito e verbo.

We have to swap 'am' and 'I':

Temos que trocar 'sou' e 'eu':

So am I.

Eu também.

Now! A common mistake that I hear some of my  students make,

is sticking with the verb 'am'.

é usar o verbo 'am'.

no matter what the original sentence is, they say:

Oh! I am too.

Oh! Eu também.

Or:

Ou:

So am I.

Now, be careful because this has to follow the original sentence.

Agora, tome cuidado porque isso tem que seguir a frase original.

So, for example, if someone says:

Então, por exemplo, se alguém disser:

I like antique furniture.

eu gosto de móveis antigos.

We're using the Present Simple tense.

Estamos usando o tempo presente simples.

We need to use the auxiliary of the Present Simple tense.

Precisamos usar o auxiliar do tempo presente simples.

So, don't say:

Então, não diga:

I am to.

eu devo.

You have to say:

Você tem que dizer:

I do too.

eu também.

Or:

Ou:

So do I.

Eu também.

And! If we change the tense, obviously we need to change the auxiliary.

E! Se mudarmos o tempo, obviamente precisamos mudar o auxiliar.

So, if someone said:

Então, se alguém dissesse:

I used to like antique furniture.

eu gostava de móveis antigos.

You need to say:

Você precisa dizer:

I did too.

eu também.

Or:

Ou:

So did I.

Eu também.

Now, what about negative statements?

Agora, e as declarações negativas?

For example, someone says:

Por exemplo, alguém diz:

I don't like antique furniture.

não gosto de móveis antigos.

What you must avoid here is using 'too'.

O que você deve evitar aqui é usar 'também'.

'Too' doesn't work with a negative sentence.

'Too' não funciona com uma frase negativa.

You have to switch to 'neither'.

Você tem que mudar para 'nem'.

I don't like antique furniture.

Não gosto de móveis antigos.

Me neither.

Nem eu.

Interestingly, and happily, 'same here' works here too.

Curiosamente e felizmente, 'mesmo aqui' funciona aqui também.

'Same here' is very versatile.

'Mesmo aqui' é muito versátil.

It works with positive sentences and negative sentences.

Funciona com frases positivas e negativas.

Let's look at the other alternatives.

I don't like antique furniture.

Não gosto de móveis antigos.

I don't.

Eu não.

You can't use too.

Você também não pode usar.

The word you need to use here is 'either'.

A palavra que você precisa usar aqui é 'ou'.

I don't either.

eu também não.

And, if you want to use the inversion, then use 'neither'.

E, se você quiser usar a inversão, use 'nem'.

Neither do I.

Nem eu.

And, if we change the tense, obviously, the same thing:

E, se mudarmos o tempo, obviamente, a mesma coisa:

I didn't used to like antique furniture.

eu não gostava de móveis antigos.

I didn't either.

Eu também não.

Or:

Ou:

Neither did I.

Nem eu.

Now! a little word about negative words.

Agora! uma pequena palavra sobre palavras negativas.

For example, 'never', 'hardly', 'no longer'. Let's look at some examples:

Por exemplo, 'nunca', 'dificilmente', 'não mais'. Vejamos alguns exemplos:

I've never bought any antique furniture.

Nunca comprei móveis antigos.

Now, you see that the verb is positive: 'I have'.

Agora, você vê que o verbo é positivo: 'eu tenho'.

But, the sentence, the idea is negative because of 'never'.

Mas, a frase, a ideia é negativa por causa de 'nunca'.

Make sure you follow with the negative expression.

Certifique-se de seguir com a expressão negativa.

So, don't use 'too' or 'so'.

Então, não use 'too' ou 'so'.

Say:

Diga:

Me neither.

Or:

I haven't either.

Ou:

Or:

Neither have I.

Ou:

Let's look at an example with 'hardly'.

I can hardly see the road.

Me neither.

Nem eu.

I can't either.

Eu também não posso.

Neither can I.

Nem eu.

And, a final example with 'no longer'.

E, um exemplo final com 'não mais'.

John no longer works here.

John não trabalha mais aqui.

Linda neither.

Linda também não.

Linda doesn't either.

Linda também não.

Neither does Linda.

Nem Linda.

And, there is one other word I want to mention here, and that's the word 'nor.

E há uma outra palavra que quero mencionar aqui, que é a palavra 'nem'.

'Nor' can replace 'neither' in an inverted phrase.

'Nem' pode substituir 'nem' em uma frase invertida.

But, it sounds a little bit more formal.

Mas, soa um pouco mais formal.

So, you may hear and if you're in a formal situation, you can say:

Então, você pode ouvir e se estiver em uma situação formal, pode dizer:

Nor did I.

Nem eu.

Nor does she.

Nem ela.

Nor would they.

Nem eles.

Now! I'd like to share an amusing common mistake with you.

Agora! Gostaria de compartilhar um erro comum divertido com você.

If someone says to you:

Se alguém te disser:

I love you!

eu te amo!

I've often heard the other person by mistake saying:

Muitas vezes ouvi a outra pessoa dizer por engano:

Me too.

Eu também.

I do too.

Eu também.

So do I.

Eu também.

Obviously, this means I love myself too.

Obviamente, isso significa que eu também me amo.

I don't think that's what you want to say.

Acho que não é isso que você quer dizer.

In this situation, avoid these expressions!

Nessa situação, evite essas expressões!

You have to repeat the sentence. You have to say:

Você tem que repetir a frase. Você tem que dizer:

I love you too.

eu também te amo.

Now, there are a couple of other situations that you need to be careful of.

Agora, existem algumas outras situações com as quais você precisa ter cuidado.

Same type of situation. If someone says:

Mesmo tipo de situação. Se alguém disser:

I'm happy to see you.

Estou feliz em ver você.

Don't say: Me too.

Não diga: Eu também.

Because it means I'm happy to see myself, right? That  doesn't work.

Porque significa que estou feliz em me ver, certo? Isso não funciona.

You either have to repeat the sentence.

Ou você tem que repetir a frase.

Maybe you can change the vocabulary  a little bit. Say:

Talvez você possa mudar um pouco o vocabulário. Diga:

It's good to see you too.

É bom ver você também.

Or use this very useful expression:

Ou use esta expressão muito útil:

Likewise.

Da mesma forma.

That reciprocates whatever nice thing they have said to you.

Isso retribui qualquer coisa boa que eles tenham dito a você.

And the last example.

Someone wishes you a lovely day:

Alguém deseja a você um lindo dia:

Have a lovely day.

Tenha um lindo dia.

Here, simply say:

Aqui, simplesmente diga:

You too!

Você também!

You are sending the same wish back to them in this way.

Você está enviando o mesmo desejo de volta para eles dessa maneira.
