How to use too, so, either, neither, nor in your daily English conversations

Are you using the expression 'me too' too  often in your daily conversations?

Sometimes, that's actually the wrong expression.

And, sometimes you can find a better alternative.

Okay! Let's start by looking at an example of  when we say 'me too'.

¡Bueno! Comencemos por ver un ejemplo de cuando decimos "yo también".

So, someone has said to you:

Entonces, alguien te ha dicho:

I'm interested in antique furniture.

me interesan los muebles antiguos.

And, you're also interested in antique furniture.

Y también te interesan los muebles antiguos.

You can simply say:

Simplemente puedes decir:

Me too.

Yo también.

Now, you may very occasionally hear:

Ahora, muy ocasionalmente puedes escuchar:

I too.

Yo también.

That's very formal.

Eso es muy formal.

It's grammatically correct. But, it's very formal.  I would avoid that.

Es gramaticalmente correcto. Pero, es muy formal. Yo evitaría eso.

Just stick with 'me too'.

Solo quédate con 'yo también'.

Now, let's look at some alternatives.

Ahora, veamos algunas alternativas.

One good one is:

Una buena es:

Same here.

Lo mismo aquí.

It's simple, and it works every time.

Es simple, y funciona siempre.

But, two things that you must absolutely avoid  is using 'also' and 'as well' in this expression.

Pero hay dos cosas que debes evitar por completo : usar 'también' y 'aswell' en esta expresión.

Although, they're synonyms for 'too', they don't  fit here.

Aunque son sinónimos de 'también', no encajan aquí.

So, don't say:

Entonces, no digas:

Me also

Yo también

And don't say:

Y no digas:

Me as well

Yo también

Right! Let's look at two more alternatives.

¡Claro! Veamos dos alternativas más.

These are short sentences that you create using the verb in the original sentence.

Estas son oraciones cortas que creas usando el verbo en la oración original.

Now, here the verb is 'am'. So, we use that:

Ahora, aquí el verbo es 'am'. Entonces, usamos eso:

I'm interested in antique furniture.

me interesan los muebles antiguos.

I am too.

Yo también.

Or:

O:

So am I.

yo también.

Now, notice that if you start with 'so', we need a subject verb inversion.

Ahora, observe que si comienza con 'so', necesitamos una inversión de sujeto y verbo.

We have to swap 'am' and 'I':

Tenemos que intercambiar 'soy' y 'yo':

So am I.

yo también.

Now! A common mistake that I hear some of my  students make,

¡Ahora! Un error común que escucho que cometen algunos de mis alumnos

is sticking with the verb 'am'.

es apegarse al verbo 'soy'.

no matter what the original sentence is, they say:

no importa cuál sea la oración original, dicen:

Oh! I am too.

¡Oh! Yo también.

Or:

O:

So am I.

Yo también.

Now, be careful because this has to follow the original sentence.

So, for example, if someone says:

I like antique furniture.

me gustan los muebles antiguos.

We're using the Present Simple tense.

Estamos usando el presente simple.

We need to use the auxiliary of the Present Simple tense.

Necesitamos usar el auxiliar del presente simple.

So, don't say:

Por lo tanto, no digas:

I am to.

debo hacerlo.

You have to say:

Tienes que decir:

I do too.

yo también.

Or:

O:

So do I.

Yo también.

And! If we change the tense, obviously we need to change the auxiliary.

¡Y! Si cambiamos el tiempo, obviamente necesitamos cambiar el auxiliar.

So, if someone said:

Entonces, si alguien dijera:

I used to like antique furniture.

me gustaban los muebles antiguos.

You need to say:

Tienes que decir:

I did too.

yo también.

Or:

O:

So did I.

yo también.

Now, what about negative statements?

Ahora, ¿qué pasa con las declaraciones negativas?

For example, someone says:

Por ejemplo, alguien dice:

I don't like antique furniture.

no me gustan los muebles antiguos.

What you must avoid here is using 'too'.

Lo que debe evitar aquí es usar 'también'.

'Too' doesn't work with a negative sentence.

'Too' no funciona con una oración negativa.

You have to switch to 'neither'.

Tienes que cambiar a 'ninguno'.

I don't like antique furniture.

No me gustan los muebles antiguos.

Me neither.

Yo tampoco.

Interestingly, and happily, 'same here' works here too.

Curiosamente, y felizmente, 'lo mismo aquí' también funciona aquí.

'Same here' is very versatile.

'Lo mismo aquí' es muy versátil.

It works with positive sentences and negative sentences.

Funciona con oraciones positivas y oraciones negativas.

Let's look at the other alternatives.

I don't like antique furniture.

No me gustan los muebles antiguos.

I don't.

Yo no.

You can't use too.

No puedes usar también.

The word you need to use here is 'either'.

La palabra que necesita usar aquí es 'cualquiera'.

I don't either.

yo tampoco

And, if you want to use the inversion, then use 'neither'.

Y, si desea utilizar la inversión, utilice 'ninguno'.

Neither do I.

A mí tampoco.

And, if we change the tense, obviously, the same thing:

Y, si cambiamos el tiempo, obviamente, lo mismo:

I didn't used to like antique furniture.

no me gustaban los muebles antiguos.

I didn't either.

yo tampoco.

Or:

O:

Neither did I.

Yo tampoco.

Now! a little word about negative words.

¡Ahora! una pequeña palabra acerca de las palabras negativas.

For example, 'never', 'hardly', 'no longer'. Let's look at some examples:

Por ejemplo, 'nunca', 'casi', 'ya no'. Veamos algunos ejemplos:

I've never bought any antique furniture.

nunca he comprado ningún mueble antiguo.

Now, you see that the verb is positive: 'I have'.

Ahora, ves que el verbo es positivo: 'tengo'.

But, the sentence, the idea is negative because of 'never'.

Pero, la oración, la idea es negativa debido a 'nunca'.

Make sure you follow with the negative expression.

Asegúrate de seguir con la expresión negativa.

So, don't use 'too' or 'so'.

Por lo tanto, no use 'too' o 'so'.

Say:

Di:

Me neither.

Or:

I haven't either.

O:

yo tampoco.

Or:

Neither have I.

Let's look at an example with 'hardly'.

Veamos un ejemplo con 'apenas'.

I can hardly see the road.

Apenas puedo ver el camino.

Me neither.

Yo tampoco.

I can't either.

yo tampoco puedo

Neither can I.

Yo tampoco.

And, a final example with 'no longer'.

Y, un ejemplo final con 'no más'.

John no longer works here.

Juan ya no trabaja aquí.

Linda neither.

Linda tampoco.

Linda doesn't either.

Linda tampoco.

Neither does Linda.

Linda tampoco.

And, there is one other word I want to mention here, and that's the word 'nor.

Y hay otra palabra que quiero mencionar aquí, y es la palabra 'ni'.

'Nor' can replace 'neither' in an inverted phrase.

'Ni' puede reemplazar a 'ninguno' en una frase invertida.

But, it sounds a little bit more formal.

Pero, suena un poco más formal.

So, you may hear and if you're in a formal situation, you can say:

Nor did I.

Yo tampoco.

Nor does she.

Ella tampoco.

Nor would they.

Ellos tampoco.

Now! I'd like to share an amusing common mistake with you.

¡Ahora! Me gustaría compartir contigo un divertido error común.

If someone says to you:

Si alguien te dice: ¡

I love you!

Te amo!

I've often heard the other person by mistake saying:

Muchas veces he oído a la otra persona decir por error:

Me too.

Yo también.

I do too.

Yo también.

So do I.

Obviously, this means I love myself too.

Yo también. Obviamente, esto significa que también me amo.

I don't think that's what you want to say.

No creo que eso sea lo que quieras decir.

In this situation, avoid these expressions!

En esta situación, ¡evita estas expresiones!

You have to repeat the sentence. You have to say:

Tienes que repetir la frase. Tienes que decir:

I love you too.

Yo también te amo.

Now, there are a couple of other situations that you need to be careful of.

Ahora, hay un par de otras situaciones de las que debe tener cuidado.

Same type of situation. If someone says:

Mismo tipo de situación. Si alguien dice:

I'm happy to see you.

Me alegro de verte.

Don't say: Me too.

No digas: Yo también.

Because it means I'm happy to see myself, right? That  doesn't work.

You either have to repeat the sentence.

O tienes que repetir la frase.

Maybe you can change the vocabulary  a little bit. Say:

Tal vez puedas cambiar un poco el vocabulario. Diga:

It's good to see you too.

Es bueno verte a ti también.

Or use this very useful expression:

O use esta expresión muy útil:

Likewise.

Igualmente.

That reciprocates whatever nice thing they have said to you.

Eso corresponde a cualquier cosa agradable que te hayan dicho.

And the last example.

Someone wishes you a lovely day:

Alguien te desea un hermoso día:

Have a lovely day.

Que tengas un hermoso día.

Here, simply say:

Aquí, simplemente di: ¡

You too!

Tú también!

You are sending the same wish back to them in this way.

De esta manera, les estás enviando el mismo deseo.
