So first of all, what are collocations?

Collocations are pairings or groupings of words that commonly appear together.

Now, sometimes these can be idiomatic, meaning that when you put a couple of words together

They're just commonly put together because that's how the language works.

So, for example, you do homework.

You don't take homework.

You don't make homework.

So, "do" and "homework" are always put together, and this is a collocation.

Now, alliteration is a stylistic tool where you're putting words that begin with the same

And this creates a bit of a sound, and again, remember, it's mostly for writing, but it

So, what I'm going to show you today are 11 collocations that are also alliterative;

means they use alliteration when they're joined together.

Some of them are idiomatic, some of them are very straightforward.

Each word separately works the same as when it's in a combination.

So, for example, "feel free".

So, I have the "f" and I have the "f", so "feel free".

This is a very common collocation, people use it all the time.

It basically means, like, "help yourself" or "don't be shy" or, like, basically, "mi

Do whatever you want.

So, basically, don't hold yourself back.

Go to the fridge, take whatever you want.

Use it like it's yours, right?

Very common thing.

매우 흔한 일이죠.

So, "feel" and "free", each word by itself basically stays the same in the collocation.

따라서 "feel"과 "free"는 각 단어 자체로는 기본적으로 결합어에서 동일하게 유지됩니다.

"Crystal clear".

"매우 맑다".

This is a little bit more idiomatic, although "crystal" is basically a very clear glass,

이건 조금 더 관용적인 표현인데, "크리스탈"은 기본적으로 매우 투명한 유리를 의미하기 때문에

and that's why it's clear, so it's a little bit redundant, but we use this collocation

So, if somebody asks you, "Do you understand?", yes, it's crystal clear, okay?

Or somebody may ask, "Is this clear?", yes, crystal clear.

If you want to emphasize that the explanation was very easy to understand, right?

There's no questions, no misunderstandings, and again, crystal clear, CC, that's your

Now, another reason I made this lesson is because collocations are a little bit tricky

The alliteration sometimes makes it a little bit easier to remember, so I hope this helps

"Special someone".

"특별한 누군가"

So, now, when we talk about a special someone, this is a little bit idiomatic.

그래서, 이제 우리가 특별한 사람에 대해 이야기할 때, 이건 약간 관용적인 표현입니다.

If I say "someone special", "someone special" means they could be very gifted, very talented,

"특별한 누군가"라고 하면, "특별한 누군가"는 매우 재능이 있거나, 매우 재주가 있거나,

very beautiful, very something, right?

매우 아름다우거나, 매우 특별한 사람이라는 뜻이 맞나요?

But a "special someone" basically means someone you have a very close relationship to.

So, your husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend is your special someone.

그러니 당신의 남편, 아내, 여자친구, 남자친구는 당신에게 특별한 사람입니다.

We don't say this about a family member.

우리는 가족에 대해서는 이런 말을 하지 않습니다.

A family member, you can think of as someone special.

가족은 특별한 사람이라고 생각할 수 있는 사람입니다.

They are special to you.

그들은 당신에게 특별합니다.

But your special someone is your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, etc.

하지만 당신의 특별한 사람은 당신의 남자친구, 여자친구, 남편, 아내 등입니다.

"Hot-headed".

"급성적인" 사람입니다.

Now, if you think about your head, it's at the top of your body, all the heat rises up,

이제 머리에 대해 생각해 보세요. 머리는 몸의 꼭대기에 있고, 열이 모두 위로 올라가기

so maybe it's a little bit warm, but it's not hot.

때문에 조금 따뜻할 수는 있지만 뜨겁지는 않습니다.

"Hot-headed" is, again, idiomatic.

When we say someone is hot-headed or...

누군가가 급한 성격이라고 말할 때...

Yeah, someone is hot-headed, that means that they get angry very easily.

네, 누군가가 급한 성격이라고 말할 때는 그 사람이 매우 쉽게 화를 낸다는 뜻입니다.

They have a very short temper.

그들은 매우 성격이 급합니다.

If someone is hot-headed and you say the wrong thing to them, they will yell back at you,

만약 누군가가 급한 성격이고 당신이 그에게 잘못된 말을 한다면, 그들은 당신에게 소리를 지르거나,

or they will get very angry, or they will throw a chair against the wall, right?

매우 화를 내거나, 아니면 벽에 의자를 던질 것입니다. 맞죠?

They overreact.

What we also sometimes do say is a "hot-head".

우리가 가끔 "성급한 사람"이라고 말하기도 합니다.

We can say someone is a hot-head and we put the two words together to create a compound,

누군가를 급한 성격이라고 말할 때, 두 단어를 합쳐서 합성어를 만들면

and it's one word, "hot-head", or as an adjective, that person is hot-headed, right?

"급한 성격"이라는 단어 하나가 되고, 형용사로 쓰면 그 사람은 급한 성격이라고 할 수 있지 않나요?

And again, "hh" to make the alliteration.

그리고 다시 "hh"를 넣어 두문자어를 만듭니다.

Now, very often when you go to a store, you can mix and match items.

요즘은 매장에 가면 여러 가지 품목을 섞어서 구매할 수 있는 경우가 많습니다.

So, a store will say, "Buy any five pieces for $20", right?

그럼, 가게에서 "5개 사면 20달러예요"라고 말할 건가요?

And you can mix and match.

그리고 혼합하고 매치할 수도 있습니다.

So, you can take one from this department, one from this department, and put them together.

그러니까 이 부서에서 하나, 저 부서에서 하나 가져와서 합치면 되는 거예요.

Or for example, clothing, especially, let's say, a bikini store.

또는 예를 들어, 의류, 특히 비키니 매장이라고 해 봅시다.

You don't have to buy a complete set.

You can take one bikini top that's this design, and another bikini bottom that's this design.

You can mix and match.

And this is a very common collocation, and it's very literal.

Mix the items and match the things that work well together.

You can also mix and match items at a restaurant, you can do it at any clothing store.

Basically, when you're going shopping, that's when you're going to see this particular collocation

기본적으로 쇼핑을 갈 때 "mm"과 함께 이 특정 결합을 보게 될 거예요

with "mm", okay?

"Cold calculation".

"냉정한 계산"

Now, this is a little bit harder to explain, and technically, it's very straightforward.

이건 설명하기가 조금 더 어렵지만 기술적으로는 매우 간단합니다.

It's not really idiomatic.

별로 관용적인 표현은 아니죠.

If you think of "cold", "cold" doesn't always mean, like, temperature.

"추위"라고 하면, "추위"는 항상 온도를 뜻하는 것은 아닙니다.

A person can be cold, means, like, feeling cold, or a person could be cold, meaning they

So, you can say they're a little bit cold.

Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but that's what people often think.

So, a person like that, who always thinks with his or her head, basically, he calculates

everything in a very logical way.

So, everything that he does is based on a cold calculation.

It's very logical, very thought out, no feelings involved, okay?

매우 논리적이고, 잘 생각한 내용이며, 감정이 전혀 개입되지 않은 내용이에요, 알겠어요?

That's the meaning of this.

이것이 그 의미입니다.

So, again, if you think about governments, most governments are cold, I guess you could

When a government decides to go to war against another country, it's a very cold calculation.

Lots of people are going to die, but the government is thinking about the economy, it's thinking

about oil, it's thinking about expanding its power, so it's only about cold, hard facts.

"First and foremost", now, "first and foremost", let me say that this is a very useful expression,

"우선, 무엇보다도", "우선, 무엇보다도", 이게 아주 유용한 표현이라고 말씀드리고 싶습니다,

okay?

"First" means this is the first thing I'm going to tell you, and also the most important

알겠어요?

"첫 번째"는 제가 여러분께 말씀드릴 첫 번째 사항이며, 또한

thing that I want to mention.

So, we use this to start a sentence, especially in writing.

You could use it in speaking as well.

When you say "first and foremost", you are emphasizing the point you're about to make

Now, for those of you who like to get massages, there are all kinds of different massages,

If you wear your clothing every single day for a year, after one year, it will look like

It will be dirty, it will be torn, it will have rough edges, so those are rags.

Riches basically means you're rich.

So, rags to riches means going from being poor to being rich, or from going from a very

Mostly, we use this to talk about somebody who became very successful, financially successful.

Somebody who worked very hard, maybe came from a lower income family and then moved

So, we usually use it to talk about money, but we can also talk about a rags to riches

story basically about success.

Somebody who's not necessarily poor, but didn't really have any success in life or any...

Nobody knew who this person was, nobody thought anything of this person, and suddenly this

person became very famous or very successful, we say it's like a rags to riches story.

사람이 매우 유명해지거나 매우 성공하게 되었는데, 우리는 이를 빈털터리에서 부자가 된 이야기라고 말합니다.

This is a very common expression as well when you talk...

When you look at somebody's life and how it changed from not so good to very good.

누군가의 삶이 별로 좋지 않던 상태에서 아주 좋은 상태로 바뀌었을 때를 볼 때요.

Safe and sound.

Now, safe and sound actually mean the same thing.

무사히.

안전과 건전함은 실제로 같은 의미입니다.

Sound actually means physically healthy or physically safe.

소리는 실제로 신체적으로 건강하거나 신체적으로 안전하다는 것을 의미합니다.

Safe just means every other meaning of safe, right?

안전하다는 건 다른 모든 의미로도 안전하다는 뜻이잖아요?

So, when we say safe and sound, we're just emphasizing that emotionally, physically,

그러니까, 우리가 안전하다고 말할 때는 감정적으로, 신체적으로

everything is okay, especially when somebody goes on a trip, right?

모든 것이 괜찮다는 것을 강조하는 거예요. 특히 누군가가 여행을 갈 때는 더욱 그렇죠?

So, if I go on a journey, when I get there, I would call my family and say, "I arrived,

Very straightforward, just as it means, okay?

The rags to riches, a little bit idiomatic there.

가난에서 부자가 되다니, 좀 속어적인 표현이네요.

Last one, tall tale.

마지막은 허황된 이야기입니다.

Tall and tale, tale means story, like an old story that has a meaning in it, but generally

Tall과 tale은 이야기를 의미하는데, 의미가 있는 오래된 이야기와 같지만 일반적으로

story.

이야기입니다. '

A tall tale is idiomatic, it means an unbelievable story, right?

Tall tale'은 관용적인 표현으로, 믿을 수 없는 이야기를 뜻합니다. 맞죠?

So, when you...

그래서, 여러분이...

When your child has an excuse why he didn't do his homework or why the couch is upside

자녀가 숙제를 안 한 이유나 소파가 거꾸로 된 이유 등에 대한 변명을 늘어놓을 때

down, for example, he'll say, "Oh, you know, the dog was chasing...

Another dog came into the house and our dog was chasing it, and they ran over the couch
