Now, you might already know that there are two

الآن ، ربما تعرف بالفعل ان هناك

types of English nouns, countable

نوعين من الأسماء الإنجليزية، اسماء معدودة

and uncountable nouns.

و غير المعدودة .

Knowing the difference between these nouns is really important

معرفة الفرق بين هذه الأسماء هو مهم حقا

and I can tell you right now that so

واستطيع ان اقول لكم الآن أن

many of the English grammar mistakes that you're making

العديد من الأخطاء النحوية التي تقع بها

are to do with these different types of nouns.

They affect the way that you use other words in English,

أنها تؤثر على الطريقة التي تستخدم بها كلمات أخرى باللغة الإنجليزية ،

words like articles

كلمات مثل ادوات التعريف

and much and many,

much و many

some and any,

البعض و أى ،

a little, a few!

a little و few

Learning how to use uncountable and

تعلم كيفية استخدام الاسماء غير المعدودة

countable nouns with these words will really,

و الأسماء المعدودة مع هذه الكلمات سوف ،

dramatically improve your English grammar.

Okay! Some nouns are countable

حسنا ! بعض الأسماء هي معدودة

which means really simply, you can count them.

والذي يعني ببساطة ، يمكنك عدها .

You can say that there are three, five or ten of

يمكنك القول أن هناك ثلاثة أو خمسة أو عشرة

these different nouns.

من هذه الأسماء المختلفة .

For example, this is an apple

على سبيل المثال ، هذه تفاحة

and I've got three apples here.

وهنا عندي ثلاثة تفاحات .

They have singular and plural forms.

لديها صيغ المفرد والجمع.

Countable nouns have singular and plural forms,

الأسماء المعدودة لها صيغ المفرد والجمع،

which means that you can use the articles 'a' or 'an'

والذي يعني أنه يمكنك استخدام ادوات التعريف

with the singular form of these nouns.

مع صيغة المفرد من هذه الأسماء .

A lemon, an apple, a glass.

ليمون تفاح ، قدح ماء .

Okay, so I said an apple and a lemon there, didn't I?

حسنا ، لقد قلت تفاحة وليمون قبل قليل ؟

So, what's the difference?

اذا ، ما هو الفرق ؟

Well, 'a' or 'an' is just like saying that there is one of something,

حسنا ، هو مثل قول أن هناك واحد من شيء ما ،

so it's used with a singular noun,

اذا انها تستخدم مع اسم مفرد ،

never in the plural form.

لا تستخدم ابدا في صيغة الجمع .

We use 'a' in front of a noun that starts with a consonant sound.

a نستخدمها أمام الاسم الذي يبدأ بصوت صحيح

A banana, a cup, a plate, a potato, a lemon.

موزة ، كوب ، لوحة ، بطاطس وليمونة .

We use 'an' in front of a noun that starts with a vowel,

an نستخدم أمام الاسم الذي يبدأ بـ علة

a vowel sound, like an apple, an orange or an hour

صوت حرف العلة ، مثل تفاحة ، برتقالة أو ساعة

Now, hour's a little tricky. It starts with a consonant

الآن ، ساعة معقدة قليلا . انها تبدأ مع حرف صحيح

and actually it starts with a vowel sound.

والواقع أنها تبدأ بصوت علة .

So, we're talking about letters or sounds.

لذلك ، نحن نتحدث عن الاحرف أو الأصوات .

This word starts with a consonant letter

هذه الكلمة تبدأ بحرف صحيح

but the first sound that you hear when it's pronounced

is a vowel sound: ow, ow, hour.

So, because it starts with a vowel sound,

you need to use the article 'an'.

So, what about plural countable nouns?

When you have a plural countable noun,

you can use the word 'some' if you're not being specific,

you don't know exactly how much or you

don't want to say exactly how much, use 'some'.

Or, you can use the number and be exact.

You can say 'some potatoes' or 'two forks' or 'three glasses'.

يمكنك أن تقول "بعض البطاطس" أو "شوكتين" أو "ثلاثة أكواب.

Most English nouns are countable,

معظم الأسماء الإنجليزية هي معدودة ،

but there are so many nouns outside of the kitchen, right?

ولكن هناك الكثير من الأسماء خارج المطبخ ، أليس كذلك ؟

Like day and week and hour, minute, task,

مثل اليوم والأسبوع والساعة والدقيقة والمهمة،

appointment, activity.

المقابلة و النشاط .

So, let's recap on countable nouns.

لذا ، دعونا نلخص الأسماء المعدودة .

They can be singular or plural.

يمكن أن تكون بصيغة المفرد أو الجمع .

You can use the articles 'a' and 'an'

when talking about these nouns, when they're singular.

You can use 'some' with plural nouns when you don't want to be specific.

Or, you can just use the number to say exactly how many!

Like I said, the majority of English nouns are countable nouns

and the way to find out is to check your dictionary.

Every dictionary will say whether the noun is countable or uncountable.

You'll see a little [u] or a little [c] next to the noun

and it's really important that you get into the habit of using these nouns correctly.

They are treated very differently in English sentences.

Remember that the words you can use with them are quite different.

And this is how so many English mistakes are made,

particularly with grammar! So, you really must start paying attention

to the type of noun that you're using

and how it affects the other words in your sentences.
