Have / Get Something Done - Explanation and Examples (English Phrases)

Hello. This is Jack from tofluency.com, and in this English lesson, we're gonna have a

look at the phrase 'have or get something done'.

Now, I used this phrase in one of my videos that I posted on social media. And what we're

gonna do is have a look at how I used it, look at the explanation, and then see more

examples.

So, here is that video now.

"We spent a bit of time together, and then I took him to daycare. And then, after that,

I had my car inspected."

In the video, I said, "I had my car inspected." Now, to have or to get something done means

that someone does something for you.

So, here in North Carolina, you have to get your car inspected every year to ensure that

your car is okay to be driven on the roads. So, this morning, I had my car inspected.

Someone did this for me.

Let's have a look at some more examples now. And you're going to see some terrible hair.

Are you ready?

There it is. So, the first example is, "I need to get my haircut soon!" Or you can say,

"I need to have my hair cut soon."

So, someone else cuts your hair for you - that's why we use it in this way.

"Shall we have a new security system installed?" So, you can imagine somebody at a company

ask this question. And he's talking about having someone else do something - so, somebody

else will install this security system. That's why the question is: "Shall we have a new

security system installed?"

"They have their lawn mowed every week." So, this means that someone else mows their lawn.

And then the last example is a little bit different: "My friend had his nose broken

playing football." So, we use it in this way when something bad happens to someone - "I

had my car stolen." - but in this example, "My friend had his nose broken playing football."

Now, my question to you is this: "How often do you have your hair cut?" "How often do

you have your hair cut?" And for bonus points, you can leave an example using this phrase

- so something a little bit different in the comment section.
