I am an Indigenous woman from the Amazon rainforest.

I don't look Indigenous, do I?

"You're Indigenous?" people always ask me.

“당신이 원주민이라구요?” 사람들은 항상 저에게 묻습니다.

But don't worry, I get that a lot.

그런데 걱정 마세요. 그런 질문 엄청 많이 받거든요.

I bet you expected an exotic Indigenous woman

장담하는데 여러분은 아마 이국적인 원주민 여성을 기대하셨을 거예요.

with a painted face and feathers in her hair.

얼굴에 그림도 있고 머리에 깃털도 꽂은 사람이요.

Probably a bow and arrow too.

어쩌면 활이랑 화살도요.

Well, today I won't be talking about the looks of Indigenous people.

네, 오늘 저는 원주민들의 모습에 대해 이야기하진 않을 거예요.

Today I want to talk to you about Indigenous perspective,

오늘 저는 원주민의 관점에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다.

what that means and how it can help change this world.

그 관점이 뜻하는 의미와 그게 이 세상을 바꾸는 걸 어떻게 도울 수 있는지도요.

So I come from Suriname,

네, 저는 수리남에서 왔습니다.

the only Dutch-speaking country in South America.

남아메리카에서 유일하게 네덜란드어를 사용하는 나라죠.

It is also known as the greenest country in the world right now.

지금 현재 전 세계에서 가장 녹지가 풍부한 나라로 알려져있기도 합니다.

You didn't know this now, did you?

이건 몰랐을 걸요, 그렇죠?

(Laughter)

Suriname is still 93 percent pristine forests,

수리남은 아직도 93퍼센트가 원시림으로 돼있습니다.

with a population less than 600,000 people.

인구는 60만 명도 안 되고요.

I come from the south of Suriname,

저는 수리남 남부 출신입니다.

near the border with Brazil and French Guyana.

브라질 및 프랑스령 가이아나 국경 근처죠.

I am from Amazonia, I am Wayana.

저는 아마조니아에서 왔고, 저는 와야나 사람입니다.

I was born in a small settlement with 150 Wayana people.

저는 와야나 사람 150명이 사는 작은 정착지에서 태어났습니다.

My start in life was complicated.

제 인생의 시작은 순조롭지 않았죠.

You see, in our culture, when your partner died,

보시다시피, 저희 문화에서는 배우자가 죽었을 때

you had to wait at least two years before you started a new relationship,

my grandmother told me.

저희 할머니가 제게 말씀해주셨죠.

When my father's wife died,

he decided that he couldn't wait anymore

and took a new lover, my mother,

who was at that time only 16 years old,

and got pregnant.

임신해버렸습니다.

Also, certainly in our culture and maybe in yours too,

또, 확실히 저희 문화에서도 그렇고 아마 여러분들 문화에서도 그렇겠지만,

it is considered shameful

임신했는데 배우자와 같이 살지 않으면

when you get pregnant and not living with a partner.

치욕적인 걸로 간주됐습니다.

So because of that,

그래서 그 때문에

my mother tried to abort me multiple times.

어머니는 저를 낙태시키려고 여러 번 시도했습니다.

All, which as you can see, didn’t succeed.

네, 여러분께서 보시다시피, 그건 성공하지 못했죠.

It did leave me with some health problems,

but I survived.

I was called, for a very long time “anolїtpё”,

which literally means trash.

My father denied that he was my father because of pressure from his family.

제 아버지는 자기 가족의 압박 때문에 자신이 제 아버지라는 걸 부인했습니다.

But luckily, my mother's parents decided to raise me.

그런데 운 좋게도, 제 어머니의 부모님께서 저를 키우기로 하셨어요.

Even so, it was hard

그래도 여전히 힘들었어요.

as I was constantly treated as trash by the rest of my community.

저는 끊임없이 마을 사람들에게 쓰레기 취급을 받았거든요.

So when I was five years old, my grandparents,

그래서 제가 다섯 살이 됐을 때 저희 조부모님께서는

especially my grandmother,

특히 저희 할머니께서

she decided that it was in my best interest

저에게 가장 이익이 되는 일은

that I go to the capital of Suriname to get an education,

수리남 수도로 가는 거라고 정하셨죠.

교육을 받고,

to make something of my life.

제 인생에서 뭔가를 이루려면요.

So I packed my little suitcase.

그래서 저는 조그만 짐가방을 쌌습니다.

I stepped on a plane

비행기에 올라탔죠.

with a family friend I barely knew,

제가 거의 알지도 못했던 한 가족 친지와 함께요.

[and] for the first time in my life, I left my village.

그리고 평생 처음으로 저희 마을을 떠났어요.

I remember being determined at only five years old

고작 다섯 살 밖에 안 됐는데도 제가 얼마나 결연했는지 기억해요.

that I was going to go back to show them that I was more than trash.

다시 돌아와서 나는 쓰레기보다 훨씬 나은 사람이란 걸 보여주겠다고요.

This family friend of ours and his wife,

우리 가족 친지와 그의 아내분은

they became my foster parents.

제 양부모가 됐습니다.

And I have been the second daughter that my foster parents always wanted.

또 저는 제 양부모님께서 간절히 바랬던 둘째 딸이 됐죠.

And my foster family are from a tribal people called Saamaka,

제 양가족은 사마카라고 하는 부족 출신이고

and they live as Indigenous people.

그들도 원주민으로 살고 있습니다.

Here's the thing.

그런데 있잖아요,

Even living far away in the capital of Suriname,

그렇게 멀리 떨어진 수리남 수도에서도,

going to non-Indigenous school,

비원주민 학교에 다니며

surrounded by non-Indigenous people,

비원주민들에 둘러싸여서도

I was still Indigenous.

전 여전히 원주민이었어요.

My worldview and my DNA,

제 세계관과 제 DNA는

were still shaped by that legacy, by those traditions.

여전히 그 유산과 그 전통들로 빚어졌죠.

Because every summer holiday, I could go back to visit my grandparents

왜냐하면 매년 여름 휴가 때마다 저는 저희 조부모님들을 뵈러 돌아가서

and learn those amazing cultural aspects of being a Wayana.

와야나 사람으로 살아가는 것의 놀라운 문화적 측면을 배울 수 있었거든요.

So yes, I had the best of both worlds.

네, 저는 두 세상의 장점을 모두 갖고 있었어요.

I have the best of both worlds.

두 세상의 좋은 점 모두를요.

And in both worlds I was and am still Indigenous.

또 그 두 세상 모두에서 저는 원주민이었으며, 지금도 원주민입니다.

What I came to realize is that even far away in the capital,

제가 깨닫게 된 점은 저 멀리 떨어진 수도에서도

I was privileged to live in the greenest country on Earth

제가 지구에서 가장 녹지가 풍부한 나라에 살게 된 특권을 누리게 된 건

because of Indigenous peoples,

원주민들 덕분에,

because of Indigenous guardianship.

원주민의 후견 때문이었다는 거예요.

We are the protectors of the forests, so we protect this world.

저희가 숲의 파수꾼이며, 저희가 이 세상을 지킵니다.

Eighty percent of all the world's biodiversity

세상 모든 생물 다양성의 80퍼센트가

is within Indigenous territories.

원주민 영토 내에 있습니다.

Let me repeat that in case you didn't get that.

The Amazon, where I come from,

제 출신지인 아마존은

is home to more plant and animal species

이 지구상의 그 어떤 육상 생태계보다

than any other terrestrial ecosystem on this planet,

더 많은 동식물 종들의 보금자리입니다.

including 40,000 plant species,

4만 종의 식물들과

2,200 fish,

2천2백 종의 물고기들,

427 mammals.

427종의 포유류들을 포함하죠.

One in ten of the world’s bird species live in the Amazon,

세계 조류 종의 10분의 1이 아마존에 삽니다.

which has been inhabited by Indigenous people for thousands of years.

또 거기서 원주민이 수천 년 동안 거주해왔죠.

Now, try to imagine,

이제, 상상해보세요.

when non-Indigenous people come to my community

비원주민 사람들이 저희 마을에 와서

to try to teach us about sustainable forest management or conservation.

지속가능한 삼림 관리나 보존에 대해 가르치려 하는 모습을요.

We are the forests, we breathe the forests.

저희가 바로 숲입니다. 저희가 숲을 숨쉬고 있어요.

We cannot even translate "sustainable forest management" in our own language,

저흰 심지어 “지속가능한 삼림 관리“를 우리말로 번역할 수도 없어요.

because to us, it's simply a way of living.

왜냐하면 저희에겐, 그건 단지 삶의 방식일 뿐이니까요.

We are the protectors of the forests.

우리가 바로 숲의 수호자입니다.

It is because of us that the world has any forests left to protect.

우리 때문에 세상에 아직 지킬 숲이 남아있는 거예요.

I believe, we believe, that protecting the planet

제가 믿는 건, 우리가 믿는 건 지구를 지키는 일은

should be done by Indigenous people

원주민에 의해 이루어져야 한다는 겁니다.

that has been doing so all along.

늘 그렇게 해왔던 것처럼요.

That is why the work that I'm doing with my community is so important.

그래서 제가 저희 공동체와 함께 하고 있는 일이 그렇게 중요한 겁니다.

I'm no longer trash.

전 더 이상 쓰레기가 아니예요.

I'm recycled.

전 재활용됐어요.

(Laughter)

The Amazon, where I come from,

제 출신지인 아마존은

it's so unique.

너무도 독특하죠.

And sometimes we as human beings,

또 가끔 우리 인간은

we try to change things so fast,

뭔갈 너무 빨리 바꾸려고 하고

and we try to put our individual needs ahead of the collective good.

우리의 공공의 이익보다 개인적인 욕구를 우선시하려 하죠.

And because of this change that's going too fast,

또 이렇게 너무 빨리 일어나는 변화 때문에

we ultimately cause destruction that will destroy us all.

우린 결국 우리 모두를 파괴시킬 파멸을 초래하고 말았습니다.

So today, here I am to teach you guys

그래서 오늘 이 자리에서 제가 여러분께 가르쳐 드릴 건

how you and I can protect this world the Indigenous way.

어떻게 여러분과 제가 이 세상을 원주민 방식으로 지킬 수 있을지입니다.

What is Indigenous guardianship?

원주민 후견이란 게 뭘까요?

There are five key words that we can all learn from

우리 모두가 원주민 관점에서 배울 수 있는

from Indigenous perspective.

다섯 가지 핵심 단어가 있습니다.

The first one is responsibility.

첫 번째 단어는 책임입니다.

Responsibility towards our territory,

우리의 영토에 대한 책임을 다하려면,

where we have been living along for thousands of years

우리가 지난 수천 년간 살아온 그곳을

by taking good care of it.

잘 보살펴야 합니다.

We feel responsible for Mother Earth.

우리는 어머니 대지에 대해 책임감을 느낍니다.

So can all of you.

여러분도 모두 그럴 수 있죠.

Demonstrate the responsibility through action.

행동을 통해 책임감을 보여주세요.

Do not be afraid to say:

이렇게 말하는 걸 두려워하지 마세요.

"I don't know, let's find out together."

“잘 모르겠어. 같이 알아내보자.”

Attend activities hosted by Indigenous communities.

원주민 공동체에서 주선하는 활동에 참석하세요.

Lead by example.

모범을 보이세요.

Talk about decolonizing

동료들과 함께 교육의 탈 식민화와

and indigenizing education with colleagues.

원주민화에 대해 얘기하세요.

Connect with Indigenous people, businesspeople, artists,

여러분의 일과 여러분의 삶에서 원주민 사람들, 기엄가들, 예술가들,

speakers and craftspeople in your work and your life.

연설가들 및 장인들과 연결하세요.

Learn about responsibility in the context of our existence.

우리의 존재라는 맥락 속에서 책임감에 대해 배우세요.

The second "R" is respect.

두 번째 “R”은 존중입니다.

We need to respect each other.

우린 서로를 존중할 필요가 있습니다.

Just like I respect your Western world,

제가 여러분 서양 세상을 존중하듯,

you should respect my world.

여러분도 제 세상을 존중하셔야 해요.

Respect is a word

존중이라는 단어는

that is a concept that feels often abstract than action-based.

흔히 행동 기반의 단어라기 보다는 추상적이라는 느낌을 주는 개념입니다.

It can be very difficult to find specific examples

존중이 뭔지 보여줄 수 있는

to demonstrate what respect is.

특정 예시를 찾기가 굉장히 어려울 수도 있어요.

We can all become guardians of this world.

우리는 모두 이 세상의 후견인이 될 수 있습니다.

Respect our way of living.

우리의 생활 방식을 존중하세요.

Respect our knowledge.

우리의 지식을 존중하세요.

Respect our way of decision making.

우리의 의사 결정 방식을 존중하세요.

Respect our Indigenous people's cultural integrity.

우리 원주민의 문화적 완전성을 존중하세요.

It has worked for many centuries.

지난 수 세기 동안 잘 작동해왔으니까요.

The third “R” ...

세 번째 “R”은

relationship,

관계입니다.

the third “R,” relationship, is about Indigenous people’s relationship

세 번째 “R”, 관계는 원주민들이

with their ancestral land.

선조의 땅과 맺는 관계애 관한 것입니다.

Engaging with indigenous communities ...

원주민 공동체에 참여하는 것은

it’s very important to understand the nature of the relationship

선조의 땅, 문화와 정신 사이의 관계의 본질을 이해하는 데 있어서

among ancestral lands, cultures and spirituality.

아주 중요한 일이예요.

Engaging in this way

이런 식으로 참여하는 것은

requires long-term commitment and mutual learning.

장기적인 헌신과 상호 학습을 필요로 합니다.

A relationship based on mutual respect

상호 존중에 기반한 관계는

eliminates the tendency to exert power over another.

타인에 대해 권력을 행사하려는 경향을 제거합니다.

It is something we can all learn, practice and improve.

이건 우리 모두가 배우고, 연습하고 개선할 수 있는 거예요.

Reciprocity is the idea of embracing

호혜성은 주고받는 것이

that giving and receiving

사람들과 믿음, 행동을 연결한다는 걸

connects people, beliefs and action.

포용하는 아이디어입니다.

It is not all about the money,

그건 돈에 관한 것만은 아니예요.

and those who have resources don't have all the power.

또 자원을 가진 자들이 힘을 다 가진 건 아니죠.

They shouldn't have all the power.

그들이 힘을 다 가져서도 안돼요.

Giving and receiving from the Earth endowments

지구가 내린 혜택으로부터 주고받는 건

is also part of a virtuous healing principle.

또한 선순환 치유 원칙에 속한 것이기도 합니다.

In this way,

이런 식으로

even the "poorest" Indigenous community can give back to all of us.

가장 “가난한” 원주민 공동체라도 우리 모두에게 되돌려 줄 수 있죠.

The last “R”, redistribution.

마지막 “R”은 재분배입니다.

Redistribution of our ancestral lands.

우리 선조의 땅을 재분배하는 거예요.

My people, for instance,

예를 들어, 우리 부족 사람들에겐

we don't have any legally recognized land rights.

법적으로 인정되는 토지 소유권이 전혀 없습니다.

Because our ancestral lands have been distributed to third parties

왜냐하면 우리 선조의 땅은 채굴과 벌목 양해권으로

as concessions for mining and logging.

제삼자에게 분배됐기 때문이죠.

Eighty percent of the world's remaining biodiversity

세계에 남아있는 생물 다양성의 80퍼센트가

is within Indigenous communities, as I mentioned before.

아까 말씀드렸다시피 원주민 공동체 내에 있습니다.

And it includes places that are essential

또한 원주민 공동체는 우리 세계의 기후와

for our global climate,

우리의 담수와 식량 안보에

our freshwater and food security.

결정적인 곳들을 포함하고 있습니다.

These are places vital to all of us.

이 장소들은 우리 모두에게 필수적인 곳이예요.

Help in securing Indigenous people's land rights,

원주민의 토지권 보장을 도와주세요.

join us, support us in our fight.

우리의 싸움에 참여하고 우리를 지지해주세요.

Making sure that Indigenous people have the means to protect their lands.

원주민들이 자신들의 땅을 지킬 수단을 갖도록 보장한다면

We can all benefit from that.

우리 모두가 그에 따른 혜택을 누릴 수 있습니다.

Make sure that Indigenous people have the economic power

원주민들이 경제력을 갖고

and the cultural independence

문화적 독립을 누리게 해주세요.

so they can be successful in protecting,

그러면 그들은 성공적으로 선조의 영토를

defend and govern their ancestral territories.

지키고, 방어하고 통치할 수 있을 거예요.

So, initially,

그래서 처음에

when my community threw me away as thrash,

저희 마을에서 저를 쓰레기라고 갖다 버렸을 때

they just thought that they were doing what was right.

그분들은 그냥 자신들이 옳은 일을 하고 있다고 생각했어요.

They thought that they were doing what was best

그분들 생각엔 최선이었던 걸 하고 있었던 거죠.

because they learned those things from Western power,

왜냐하면 그분들은 그런 걸 서양 세력에게 배웠거든요.

Western colonial powers and norms.

서양 식민 지배세력과 규범들을요.

And then they learned better.

또 그분들은 더 잘 배우게 됐어요.

They learned that I also have important and unique values.

그분들은 제게 중요하고 고유한 가치가 있다는 것도 배웠죠.

And guess what?

그런데 그거 아세요?

We are all doing the same thing with our planet.

우리는 우리 지구에게 모두 같은 일을 하고 있어요.

We are throwing it away,

우리는 갖다 버리고

we are trashing it.

쓰레기를 만들죠.

Maybe only for a while,

잠시 동안만 그런 걸지도 모르죠. 더 좋은 방법을 몰랐으니까요.

because we didn't know any better.

Just to realize how much we all need the Earth

지구가 우리 모두에게 얼마나 많이 필요한지 깨닫기까지는 말이죠.

because it uniquely contributes to our lives, and it sustains us.

왜냐하면 지구는 우리의 삶에 고유한 기여를 하고, 우리를 지탱해주니까요.

A healthier relationship is key.

건강한 관계가 열쇠입니다.

A healthier relationship with Indigenous peoples is key

원주민들과의 건강한 관계는

to a healthier relationship with the planet

우리 원주민들이 지켜주고 있는

that we as Indigenous people protect.

지구와의 건강한 관계의 열쇠예요.

And then we can all be recycled.

그럼 우리 모두가 재활용될 수 있을 거예요.

And we can thrive and survive

우리 모두가 번성하고 생존할 수 있어요.

on this planet that we call Earth.

우리가 지구라고 부르는 이 행성에서요.
