I ask these questions as an artist, as an educator

예술가이자 교육자이며 평생을 마이애미에서 산 사람으로서

and as a lifelong resident of Miami, Florida,

one of the most climate-vulnerable cities in the United States.

플로리다는 미국에서 기후 변화가 제일 심한 지역이라서

In Miami, we're already seeing storm drains

마이애미는 이미 폭풍으로

that erupt with water after heavy rainfalls,

폭우가 내려 배수관이 파열됐죠.

and cars and properties that are damaged

만조 때문에 홍수가 나서 차가 파손되고

due to flooding from high tide.

재산 피해가 났습니다.

And we've all seen the devastation of Hurricane Ian

모두가 초강력 허리케인 ‘이언’을 목격했어요.

as it barreled at 150 miles an hour,

풍속이 시속 약 240km에 도달했고

bringing 10 feet of storm surge to the Gulf Coast,

멕시코만을 지나면서 약 3mm의 폭우를 동반했는데

just two and a half hours from my home.

제 집에서 2시간 30분 거리밖에 안 됐죠.

My home sits at six feet above sea level.

집의 해발 고도가 약 2m 정도인데

But today, we see cranes populating [the] Miami skyline,

요즘은 마이애미 스카이라인에 크레인이 보이고

building more and more skyscrapers at the water’s edge.

물가에 고층 건물을 더 많이 짓더군요.

Thanks to this brazen overdevelopment,

그토록 무분별한 개발을 강행했기 때문에

many Miamians aren't aware of the threat

마이애미 시민들은 해수면 상승이

that sea level rise poses to their families,

그들의 가족과 집, 지역사회에 불어닥칠

their homes and their communities.

위험을 전혀 모르고 있어요.

I myself wasn’t aware of just how dire Miami’s situation was

until I traveled to Antarctica.

남극을 다녀온 후 알았습니다.

I went there in 2006

2006년에 남극에 가서

as part of the National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program.

미국 국립과학재단의 남극 예술가 및 작가 프로그램에 참여하면서

I spoke with scientists there

과학자들의 얘기를 듣고

and I learned just how vulnerable my city was.

마이애미가 취약한 곳인지 알았습니다.

I was standing on the very ice that threatened to melt

우리가 살고 있는 곳은 살얼음판이나 다름없어서

and drown the only place I've ever called home.

집이 물에 잠길 위험이 있더군요.

So I took that ice and I made art with it.

그래서 전 얼음으로 작품을 만들었어요.

I took ice that glaciologists brought back from their field stations

빙하학자들이 탐사 현장에서 가져온 얼음을 녹여서

and melted it to create a series of Antarctic ice paintings,

남극 빙하 시리즈를 그림으로 제작했습니다.

paintings made in Antarctica with Antarctica and about Antarctica.

물론 남극에서 만들었고 남극과 관련된 그림이지만

But they weren't just about Antarctica.

전부 남극 이야기는 아니에요.

They were about where Antarctica was going.

남극이 나아가야 할 방향에 대한 거죠.

I returned to Miami transformed by that experience

그 경험 덕분에 생각이 바뀌어 마이애미에 왔고

and pivoted my art practice to one

예술 활동을 하면서

where for 15 years now I’ve been trying to ask,

15년 동안 알고자 했던 다음의 질문에 중점을 뒀습니다.

how do we best engage the public around climate issues?

어떻게 하면 대중이 기후 문제에 관심을 갖게 될지 말이죠

Just a few years ago,

불과 몇 년 전만 해도 저는 파인크레스트 마을에서

I worked with the village of Pinecrest

to develop a socially engaged art project

사회 참여 예술 프로젝트를 개발했습니다.

that would make sea level rise impossible to ignore.

해수면 상승을 무시할 수 없도록 말이에요.

We called it The Underwater Homeowners Association.

그 프로젝트를 ‘수중 주택 소유자 협회’라고 불렀죠.

Let that sink in for a second.

잠시 동안만 가라앉힙시다.

We used those Antarctic ice paintings as the backdrop for yard signs

우린 집집의 마당 표지판 배경에 남극 빙하 그림을 이용하여

that would map the elevation of people's homes.

집의 고도를 표시했습니다.

People use an app to find out how many feet above sea level their homes are.

사람들은 자기 집이 해발 몇 미터인지 애플리케이션으로 알 수 있어서

And then they would either paint that number on a yard sign

마당 표지판에 그 숫자를 쓰거나 미리 만들어진 숫자판을 집으로 가져가서

or take home a pre-made one

and they would place it in their front yards.

Now, you can imagine, when your neighbor from across the street asks you

what that number eight in front of your house means,

숫자 8의 의미를 물보면

it's a perfect opportunity for you to tell them

그들도 해발고도 2m에 살고 있다는 것을

that they too live at eight feet above the sea.

And it is in their interest,

그들 자신의 재정적인 이익을 위해서

in their personal and financial interest,

to understand the consequences of a warming planet.

지구 온난화의 중요성을 이해하게 될 겁니다.

The strangeness or weirdness of these signs --

표지판이 특이한 걸 기억하세요.

remember, these aren't political signs or "home for sale" signs,

선거 홍보 피켓이나 매매용 주택 표지판이 아니라

these are elevation markers --

고도를 표시했으니까요

is a key component to a socially engaged project

사회 참여 프로젝트의 핵심 요소는

that makes random people stop long enough to ask,

누구든지 표지판을 보고 무엇에 관한 건지 질문하는 것이죠.

"What is this about?"

And it is in that way

이런 식으로 해서 제 주변의 많은 이웃은

that many of my neighbors realized

that although they lived farther inland from the ocean,

바다에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 살아도

they weren't necessarily less vulnerable to the rising seas.

해수면 상승으로부터 안전하지 않다는 걸 알게 됐죠.

You see, in Miami, elevation generally increases as you move inland

마이애미에서는 일반적으로 내륙에서 능선으로 도달할 때까지

until you hit this ridge

고도가 증가하다가 낮아지기 시작하는데

and then it starts dropping

as you approach the Florida Everglades, the River of Grass,

플로리다의 에버글레이즈 강이나

or what I call Miami's second coastline.

마이애미의 두 번째 해안선으로 이어지는 지점에서죠.

As these yard signs were popping up --

그래서 각 집이나 블록마다 마당에 표지판들이 생겨났고

house by house, block by block --

I worked with schools to paint four street intersections

저는 여러 학교와 협력하여 네 군데의 교차로에

with their respective elevations.

각각의 고도를 칠했습니다.

We call that road Elevation Drive

도로를 ‘고도 드라이브’라고 한 건

because it showcased the elevation of a neighborhood,

내륙으로 운전할 때 고도가 상승하고

rising as you drove inland

능선을 거의 빠져나갈 때쯤에

and then dropping after you crossed that barely noticeable ridge.

동네의 고도가 낮아지는 걸 볼 수 있기 때문입니다.

And as if being flanked by bodies of water on both sides wasn't enough,

게다가 마이애미는 양쪽에 바다가 있는 것도 모자라서

Miami has a third coastline.

세 번째 해안선도 있어요.

It's the water beneath our feet in the aquifer.

우리가 살고 있는 이 땅속에 지하수가 있습니다.

This is where saltwater intrusion

이곳에 바닷물이 침투해서 우리 식수를 오염시키고 있습니다.

is presently threatening our drinking water.

And it is the reason why, when it comes to sea level rise,

그래서 해수면 상승을 고려하면 마이애미에서 댐은 해결책이 아니죠.

dams are not a solution for Miami.

You see, my city is built on porous limestone rock,

아시다시피, 마이애미의 지반은 구멍이 숭숭 뚫린 석회암이라서

and the water will just come up through it.

그 구멍을 통해 물이 올라올 겁니다.

Now, as information about this, about our project, started getting out,

all hell broke loose.

People started calling the mayor's office,

다들 시장 사무실로 전화를 걸어서 무슨 일인지 그리고

"What are you doing?

How are you supporting a project

부동산 가치를 떨어뜨리는 이 프로젝트를 어떻게 진행할 것인지 묻기 시작했죠.

that's going to inherently diminish our property values?"

주택 거래를 어떤 식으로 할지 부동산 중개인들은 당황했습니다.

And the realtors were aghast.

"How are we going to make sales in the neighborhood?"

이러한 반발과

This backlash, this desire to hide a number

홍수 보험 서류에 쓰인 숫자를 조작하려는 행태로 인해

that's in every single one of our flood insurance documents

made the city officials actually reconsider the support for the project.

공무원들은 실제로 프로젝트 지원을 재고하게 됐습니다.

But by then it was too late.

하지만 이미 때는 늦었어요.

The project had broad community support.

프로젝트는 지역사회의 지원을 받았고

Hundreds of signs were all over the neighborhood.

동네 곳곳에 표지판이 수백 개나 있었죠.

People wanted to do something.

사람들은 바꾸고 싶어했어요.

So, we convened monthly

그래서 우리는 매달 수중 주택 소유자 협회 사람들과 모여서

Underwater Homeowners Association meetings

where people came together

회의를 했습니다.

and they learned from relevant scientists

그리고 과학자와 전문가 및 실무자에게 배웠고

and experts and practitioners

and ultimately began planning for a future

궁극적으로 미래를 계획하기 시작했죠.

with faulty septic tanks

결함이 있는 정화조나

and risky real estate

불안정한 부동산 및 물이 차오르는 것을 대비하므로써

and water that would rise,

but unlike a hurricane storm surge,

결국 사라지고 마는 허리케인과 폭풍 해일이 되진 않을 겁니다.

will not recede.

I want to emphasize what I'm talking about here.

제가 강조하고 싶은 얘기는

I'm talking about social practice, about socially engaged art.

사회적 실천과 사회 참여 예술에 관한 것입니다.

The objects are important -- the yard signs, the street murals --

마당 표지판이나 거리의 벽화도 중요하지만

but the art is the process.

예술은 과정에 불과합니다.

The art lives in the interaction,

지역 공동체는 예술을 매개로

in the community coming together to plan to strategize.

상호작용을 하고 전략을 세우려고 모이지요.

It is in this way

이러한 방식으로

that socially engaged art provides a mechanism

사회 참여 예술은 공동의 목표를 중심에 두고

that brings different people together

다양한 사람들을 하나로 모으는 역할을 합니다.

around a shared challenge.

And importantly,

그리고 중요한 건

it generates a sense of agency, of responsibility.

자유 의지와 책임감을 불러일으키는 것이죠.

I first started working with my neighbors on environmental issues

처음으로 환경 문제와 관련해서 이웃들과 일했습니다.

when I witnessed a destruction of wetlands

플로리다 키스로 운전하고 가다가 습지가 파괴된 걸 목격했어요.

on a drive down to the Florida Keys.

Miles upon miles of mangroves were being bulldozed

수 킬로미터에 이르는 맹그로브 숲을 불도저로 밀고

to make space for a wider road.

더 넓은 도로를 건설하는 거였죠.

And I imagined someone driving down that road in the future

한때는 그곳에 울창한 숲이 있었다는 걸 모르는 사람이

being clueless about the ecosystem

나중에 그 길을 운전하는 모습을 떠올렸습니다.

that once thrived there.

Just like many of us today

오늘날 우리처럼 자연을 파괴했다는 걸

are oblivious to the nature we've already destroyed.

의식조차 못하는 사람들을 말이죠.

So I used eco art.

그래서 생태 예술을 매개로 이웃인 남부 플로리다 사람들과 함께

I brought my neighbors, my South Floridians,

on walks through majestic mangrove forests.

장엄한 맹그로브 숲을 산책했습니다.

There we were, knee deep in water, crawling through mangrove roots.

우린 맹그로브 뿌리 사이를 다녔고 수심은 무릎 정도였어요.

And I would explain that these trees sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

이 나무들은 대기 중의 탄소를 흡수하는 역할을 하고

They support biodiversity, they protect us from storm surges.

생물의 다양성을 보존하며 폭풍 해일을 막아 우릴 지켜 줍니다.

We collected mangrove propagules, seedlings,

맹그로브 나뭇잎에서 얻은 주아와 묘목을 모아서

that we would then give to store owners on Lincoln Road,

마이애미 해변에서 번화가인 링컨 로드의

the busiest shopping area in Miami Beach.

상점 주인들에게 나누어 줄 계획이었죠.

We asked those store owners to grow those mangroves

우린 주인들에게 맹그로브를 가게 안에서 수직 정원처럼

as vertical nurseries right there inside their stores.

재배해 달라고 요청했습니다.

Our volunteers put the seedlings in disposable cups

자원봉사들은 그 묘목을 일회용 컵에 담아서

and hung them on the merchant windows as installations

배리어 아일랜드의 맹그로브 숲을 대체한

that reference the city grid

격자형 도시를 참고하여 상점 창문에 설치물로 걸었습니다.

that displaced the mangroves on that very barrier island.

When the people walk by that store,

상점 옆을 지나가는 사람들은

it's really unexpected to see a bunch of mangroves in a window.

창문에 맹그로브 나무가 있는 건 예상치 못했을 거예요.

So they ask a store owner, "What is this about?"

행인들이 주인에게 그게 뭔지 물으면 맹그로브가 섬을 되찾고 있으며

The owner says, "These mangroves are reclaiming their island.

Mangrove seedlings used to hang on this very location, on trees,

맹그로브 묘목은 이곳에 콘크리트가 부어지기 전까지

before all of this concrete was poured."

이 나무에 있었다고 답할 겁니다.

Well, when the installations came down after the seedlings were germinated,

묘목에 싹이 트자 상점에 있던 설치물을 내려 옮겨 심었습니다.

we planted them.

Twenty-five acres of them on Biscayne Bay.

비스케인 만에서 약 30평 정도 공간에 심었죠.

But more importantly,

더 중요한 건

we inspired thousands of South Floridians

수천 명의 남부 플로리다 주민이

to become environmental stewards,

환경 지킴이가 되어 환경을 보호하도록 영감을 준 것입니다.

to care for the environment.

We did this in partnership with dozens of schools, museums and libraries.

수십 개의 학교와 박물관 및 도서관과 협력하여 수행했습니다.

And it wasn't just about creating ecosystems above and below the water line.

이건 지하수면의 상하층을 생태계로 만드는 것뿐 아니라

It was about developing a cadre of eco emissaries,

of creative problem solvers.

Of Miamians, driven by empathy and love of community.

마이애미 사람들은 지역 사회에 사랑과 공감을 불러일으켰어요.

Art did that. Art has that power.

예술도 마찬가지이며 예술에는 그런 힘이 있습니다.

Art has the power to break down barriers and bridge divides.

예술은 장벽이나 경계를 허무는 힘이 있으며

Art can help us see things in different ways.

사물을 다른 방식으로 보게 해주죠.

When you look at one of those yard signs with a number on it and ask,

마당 표지판에 적힌 숫자를 보면서 뭐냐고 질문하면

“What is this about?” --

that's the moment when the seed of awareness is planted in you.

여러분 내면에 관심의 씨앗이 심어지는 순간입니다.

We've piqued your curiosity.

호기심을 자극한 것이죠.

When you're engaged in an eco art project and begin caring for mangroves,

여러분이 생태 예술 프로젝트에 참여하고 맹그로브 숲을 돌보면서

walking in that forest, collecting them, sharing, talking about them,

숲을 걷다가 맹그로브를 수집하고 공유하고 얘기하고

installing them and then planting them,

상점에 설치하고 싹이 나면 옮겨 심죠.

you begin to develop a personal connection with nature.

그러면 여러분은 자연과의 관계를 발전시키는 것입니다.

Finding ways to provoke that moment of inquiry

궁금증을 유발하여 질문을 하도록 방법을 찾습니다.

and importantly,

더 중요한 건

creating pathways for further action,

활동의 폭을 넓히는 것이 사회 참여 예술이 하는 일입니다.

that's what socially engaged art does.

And it is my hope that all of us, across all sectors,

그리고 우리 모두가 모든 분야에 걸쳐

use the power of art.

예술의 힘을 사용하면 좋겠습니다.

That universal language, the power of art,

세계 공통어인 예술은 공동체를 끌어들이는 힘이 있습니다.

to engage our communities.

So that individuals can tap into their own creativity

그래서 개인은 자신의 창의성을 활용하며

and work with others in finding innovative approaches

다른이들과 함께

혁신적인 접근법을 찾게 될 겁니다.

to build a more just, a more loving and a more beautiful world.

좀 더 공정하고 사랑이 넘치며 아름다운 세상을 이루기 위해서 말이죠.
