I’m a kid with a disability.

My condition is known as SMA:

spinal muscular atrophy,

where the muscles are getting weak but the brain remains strong.

근육은 약해지지만 뇌는 여전히 정상이죠.

I love football.

저는 축구를 좋아해요.

I'm a passionate football fan,

정말 열성적인 축구 팬이죠.

and my passion has brought me so much joy

제 열정으로 인해 저는 즐거움을 느꼈고

and so many great experiences --

지금까지 정말 굉장한 경험을 했어요.

so far, more than I could have ever imagined.

생각보다 훨씬 더 많이요.

For example, I was offered to join a brilliant campaign by UEFA,

예를 들면, 저는 UEFA에서 주최하는 멋진 캠페인에 참여해서,

that is the Union of European Football Associations,

UEFA는 유럽 축구 연맹이에요.

to raise awareness about equality and accesss issues.

It meant,

among other things,

I got the honor of public recognition,

public space

and I got an opportunity

to meet several famous players who are my heroes.

제 영웅들인 유명한 선수들도 만날 수 있었죠.

I have also had the opportunity

그리고 뉴욕에서 열린 유엔 총회에서

to speak at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York

2019년 세계 아동의 날을 맞이하여

as part of the World Children’s Day celebration in 2019.

연설을 할 기회도 있었어요.

These are just a few of the amazing moments

지금 언급한 것들은 제가 누렸던 굉장한 것들 중 일부일 뿐이에요.

I’ve been able to do.

But the thing is,

하지만 중요한 것은

it’s not just a coincidence

이런 모든 일들이 저에게는

or simple luck that this happened to me.

I was able to do all of this not because it was easy

제가 이런 일을 할 수 있었던 이유는

or simple to perform,

but because some important things were given to me,

like the support of my family, of course,

가족들의 지지는 물론이고

inclusive education

and the environment I was raised in --

but also very much because of my wheelchair.

이 휠체어도 크게 한몫 했죠.

It literally has made all of this possible.

정말 말 그대로 모든 것을 가능하게 해줬어요.

I’m independent with my chair.

휠체어를 타면 저는 독립적으로 행동할 수 있어요.

I’m free to go wherever I want to.

원하는 곳은 어디든 갈 수 있죠.

I’m able to do things I couldn’t otherwise.

못했던 것도 할 수 있게 되었어요.

My motorized wheelchair gives me three incredibly important things:

제 전동 휠체어는 저에게 세 가지 놀라운 것을 선사했습니다.

freedom,

자유

independence

독립

and ability.

그리고 능력이죠.

Some people ask,

이렇게 물어보는 분도 있어요.

“isn’t it just a wheelchair?”

“그냥 휠체어 아니에요?”

It seems like a small thing,

정말 사소하고 아무것도 아닌 것 같아 보입니다.

no big deal.

하지만 절대 아닙니다.

But it’s not.

It’s a big deal to me.

저에게는 정말 중요해요.

It's what made all of this possible.

그 덕에 이 모든 일을 해낼 수 있었죠.

But the question is:

하지만 질문이 있어요.

Do you think every kid like me has a wheelchair?

저와 같은 아이들이 모두 휠체어를 타고 있을까요?

No.

아닙니다.

I did a little research

이것에 대해 조사를 해보았고 발견한 것이 있어요.

and I found out that today,

오늘날 십억 명이 넘는 사람들이

over one billion people require assistive technology

완전한 잠재력을 성취하려면 보조 기술이 필요하다고 합니다.

to achieve their full potential,

but 90 percent do not have the access

하지만 이들 중 90퍼센트는 이들에게 필요한 보조 기술에

to the assistive technology that they need.

접근하지 못하고 있습니다.

That means only one in 10 people with disabilities,

이는 보조 기술이 필요한 장애인 10명 중 1명만이

who are in need of assistive technology,

I’m that one in 10;

I’m the lucky one.

But still in my country,

I’m not eligible to get a power chair until I’m in school,

저는 학교에 다니기 전까지는 전동 휠체어를 이용할 수 없었어요.

which means around six years old.

6살까지죠.

So from two to six years old,

그렇기 때문에 2살부터 6살까지

how am I supposed to move myself around independently?

제가 독립적으로 움직일 수 있었겠어요?

I’m supposed to be pushed by another person

다른 사람이 저를 밀어줘야 하나요?

when I want to get out of bed

6살 전까지 침대에서 나가거나 밖으로 나고 싶을 때 말이에요.

or go outside my home before the age of six?

Do you think this is OK?

이게 괜찮게 느껴지시나요?

No, not at all.

전혀 아니에요.

So let me tell you how I got my chair.

제가 어떻게 휠체어를 갖게 되었는지 말씀 드릴게요.

I was around two when I started to wheel around.

제가 처음 휠체어를 탔을 때는 2살 때쯤이었을 거예요.

Every day, out with my neighbors,

매일 친구들과 놀았는데

but first using my manual wheelchair pushed by my mom --

처음에는 엄마가 밀어주시는 수동 휠체어를 탔었어요.

which, to be honest, kind of makes it hard

솔직히 말하자면 그때는

to be just a kid hanging out with his friends

친구들과 어울리기 힘들었어요.

엄마가 항상 곁에 계셨으니까요.

when your mom was always right there.

My parents had been looking for ways to get me a power wheelchair

부모님은 전동 휠체어를 장만할 방법을 찾아보셨어요.

a long time before school,

제가 학교에 가기 오래 전부터요.

but it took them years to finally have it.

하지만 마침내 얻기까지 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸죠.

When I was five years old,

제가 5살 때쯤

a year before I started primary school,

초등학교에 들어가기 전에

I got this power chair.

이 전동 휠체어를 구했습니다.

And it was not from the government or health insurance

정부나 건강 보험으로 받은 것도 아니었고

or even because my parents could afford it,

저희 부모님은 휠체어 가격을 부담할 수도 없었죠.

but because it was a donation from another family overseas,

해외의 다른 가족에게서 기부받은 것입니다.

from a child with SMA who had outgrown the chair in the United States.

미국에 있는 가족인데 SMA를 앓는 아이가 커서 더 이상 맞지 않았거든요.

It was a gift in every sense.

제게는 모든 면에서 선물이었죠.

Their donation gave me the freedom I needed so, so much.

이 가족의 기부 덕에 저는 그렇게 원했던 자유를 얻었어요.

Now my mom says I have a better social life than all her friends and herself.

저희 엄마가 말하시길 이제 제가 엄마보다 인간 관계에 더 능숙하대요.

When I was a very small kid,

제가 아주 어린 아이였을 때

my parents, like others, were usually speaking on my behalf

저희 부모님은 다른 부모님과 마찬가지로

주변 사람들에게 저 대신 이야기 해주셨어요.

to the people in our surroundings.

Even to the kid down there,

저보다 작은 아이에게조차

answering questions about my chair,

제 휠체어나 다리, 상태, 그리고 모든 질문에 답을 해주었죠.

my legs,

my condition --

all of that.

They were saying, “Oh yeah, sure, he can play.

부모님은 이렇게 말했어요.

“그럼요, 놀 수 있어요.”

His legs are a bit weak,

“다리가 조금 약하다뿐이지 남들과 똑같이 모든 것을 할 수 있답니다.”

but he can do the same things as you

only in a different way.”

“단지 방식만 다를 뿐이에요.”

I think that pretty much gave me an idea of myself

저는 이를 통해 삶을 어떻게 살아야 하는지

and how to live my life

그리고 세상에 어떤 것을 이야기 해야 하는지

아주 잘 베웠습니다.

and what to say to the world.

That was the beginning of my wonderful social life.

이게 제 멋진 사회 생활의 첫걸음이었어요.

Later, in kindergarten,

이후 유치원에서

I was able to drive my power chair freely

저는 전동 휠체어를 자유롭게 조작할 수 있었고 삶을 즐겼습니다.

and enjoy life.

By the age of 10,

10살에는 제 자신을 어떻게 지키는지 알았고

I knew how to keep myself safe,

so I just needed a bit of assistance for transfers and books.

갈아타거나 짐을 들 때 약간의 도움만 필요했어요.

Otherwise, I was independent

그 외에는 독립적으로 살 수 있었고

and so happy going everywhere with my friends.

친구들과 어디든 갈 수 있어서 정말 행복했어요.

I have wonderful friends from my school and my neighborhood.

저는 학교와 동네에 정말 멋진 친구들이 있어요.

I really enjoy spending time with them.

친구들과 시간을 함께 보내는 게 정말 즐거워요.

But can you imagine

그런데

전동 휠체어가 없었다면 제 어린 시절이 어땠을지 상상하실 수 있나요?

how my childhood would look like without my power chair?

I cannot.

전 상상할 수가 없어요.

I’m forever grateful to the family that donated my power chair,

전 이 전동 휠체어를 기부해주신 가족분들에게 평생 감사할 거예요.

but my freedom

하지만 제 자유나 독립, 능력은

and independence

and ability should not depend on luck

운이나 자선으로 결정되어서는 안됩니다.

or charity.

No one’s should be.

누구도 그래서는 안 돼요.

This assistive product needs to be available

보조 제품이 필요한 사람들은

to everyone who needs it.

누구나 이용할 수 있어야 합니다.

By the age of two,

2살 때,

most children are able to walk on their own.

대부분의 아이들은 스스로 일어나서 걸을 수 있어요.

Those children who have some sort of disability and can’t walk,

장애 때문에 걸을 수 없는 아이들에게는

they should be given an AT,

AT, 보조 기술을 제공해야 합니다.

an assistive technology,

in order to move.

움직이려면 말이죠.

If they have a proper wheelchair from an early age,

적절한 시기에 휠체어를 얻을 수 있다면

they will have a great opportunity to discover the world around them.

주변 세계를 탐험할 수 있는 굉장한 기회를 얻게 될 거예요.

Freedom of movement,

이동의 자유는

no matter on legs or on wheels,

다리가 있든 휠체어를 탔든

is a human right,

인간의 기본 권리입니다.

which means policymakers have to provide what children with disabilities need

정책 입안자들은 장애를 가진 아동이

움직이기 위해 필요한 것을 제공해주어야 합니다.

in order to move.

It’s about being able to go to the park to play,

공원에 놀러 가거나 학교에 가거나

go to school,

go to work --

일을 하러 가거나 모든 것을 할 수 있거든요.

really, everything.

This chair is my legs.

이 휠체어는 제 다리입니다.

This chair is my life.

이 휠체어는 제 삶이에요.

The wheel was invented a long time ago.

바퀴는 오래 전에 발명되었죠.

And thanks to that invention,

바퀴가 발명된 덕에 저는 주변의 물건을 움직일 수 있어요.

I can move my stuff around.

So this time, literally, the wheel doesn’t need to be reinvented.

지금은 바퀴가 새로 개발되어야 할 때는 아니에요.

We just need policies

그냥 정책이 필요한 겁니다.

to make sure that wheelchairs are available to everyone in need.

필요한 모든 사람들이 휠체어를 쓸 수 있도록요.

But it’s not only just the wheelchair.

하지만 이는 휠체어 이야기만이 아닙니다.

We also need physical infrastructure.

실질적인 인프라도 필요하죠.

For example ramps,

예를 들면 경사로나 엘리베이터, 장애물이 없는 도로,

elevators,

roads without obstacles,

accessible transportation,

사용 가능한 교통 수단, 스쿨 버스같은 것 말이에요.

school buses,

so our environment becomes more accessible for all.

그래서 모든 사람이 좀 더 접근할 수 있는 환경을 만드는 거죠.

We live in a society that’s not giving enough support

현재 우리 사회는 장애가 있는 아동에게

to fulfill the potential of young people with disability,

잠재력을 완전히 성취하도록 충분히 지원해주지 않습니다.

like me.

저 같은 아이들이요.

We need to think about how to change that at a global level.

이를 국제적인 수준에서 어떻게 바꿀지 생각해보아야 합니다.

If society removes the barriers

마약 사회가 제 일상에서 방해가 되는 장벽을 제거하면

that prevent me from doing everyday things,

I can become a very productive person

전 아주 생산적인 사람이 될 수 있을 것이고

and give back to the society.

사회에 보답할 수 있을 겁니다.

I have so much to contribute of my intellect,

저는 제 지식이나 머리로

공헌할 것이 많아요.

my brain.

I believe I can become a lawyer or an architect,

전 제가 변호사나 건축가가 될 수 있다고 믿어요.

whatever I want to.

원하는 어떤 것이든지요.

Also, I’m an excellent football coach

저는 뛰어난 축구 코치도 될 수 있고

and a strategist,

전략가가 될 수도 있습니다.

so I have that to contribute, too.

이런 것도 공헌하는 것이죠.

I have so many things I can do to help my community,

저는 우리 사회와 국가, 세계를

my country

도울 수 있는 자원이 정말 많아요.

and the world.

We may think of that as a mutual benefit.

이를 상호 이익이라고 생각할 수도 있어요.

“How?” you may ask.

‘어떻게?’라고 물으시겠죠.

제 시각을 말씀드릴게요.

Let me tell you how I see it.

An able body doesn’t give you a direct pass to a happy life.

장애 없는 신체가 곧바로 행복한 삶으로 이어지지는 않습니다.

A person able to walk still needs help with other things --

걸을 수 있는 사람도 여전히 다른 도움이 필요한데

things that I can do well.

제가 잘하는 일일 수도 있죠.

So for example,

예를 들어

for me, helping a friend on a math test is the same as him helping me

저는 친구가 제 가방을 들어주는 것과 같이

친구의 수학 시험을 도와줄 수 있어요.

with my backpack.

I don’t see a difference.

별로 다를 것이 없어요.

He’s struggling, I’m struggling,

둘 다 힘들어하는 상황에서

he’s good with his stronger hands,

친구는 힘센 손이 있고 저는 똑똑한 머리가 있으니까

I’m good with my strong knowledge;

we’re helping each other.

서로 도울 수 있는 거예요.

That’s what friends do,

친구 좋다는게 뭐겠어요.

and that’s what societies should do.

그리고 그게 바로 사회가 해야 하는 일입니다.

Once I was out with my friends

제가 친구들과 함께 놀러 나갔을 때

and an old man approached me

나이드신 분이 다가오더니

and started a very nice and polite conversation.

아주 친절하고 정중하게 말을 걸어 주셨어요.

By simply asking me, first, “What is your condition?”

먼저 제 상태가 어떤지 물어보셨죠.

I felt deeply touched by the honesty and simplicity of his question.

저는 정직하고 단순한 질문에 깊은 감명을 받았습니다.

I was only 11

전 그때 고작 11살이었고

and felt so respected that he asked me

그분이 절 존중해주시는 것이 느껴졌어요.

and felt very comfortable to speak on my behalf

제에 대해 말하는 것이 아주 편하게 생각됐고

and answer him.

그래서 대답했죠.

I explained to him why I can’t walk

제가 왜 걸을 수 없는지,

and what I need in order to function.

필요한 것이 무언지 설명했어요.

Usually people only stare.

사람들은 보통 쳐다보기만 해요.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it's not a standard picture of a child.

저도 알아요, 일반적인 아이의 모습이 아니죠.

My wheelchair is very interesting.

제 휠체어는 굉장히 신기해요.

I was even cuter when I was small.

저는 어렸을 때는 더 귀여웠어요.

But still,

하지만 여전히

it’s not comfortable when people stare.

사람들이 쳐다보면 불편합니다.

It’s better not to stare, but to care.

쳐다보는 대신 걱정해주는 편이 좋아요.

If you see a wheelchair user,

휠체어를 탄 사람을 만난다면

rather than staring and wondering about them,

쳐다보거나 궁금해하는 대신

look around

주변을 살펴보고 도와줄 것이 없는지 보세요.

and see if there’s something you can do to help.

If there aren’t ramps,

경사로가 없거나 입구가 너무 좁다면

if doorways are too narrow,

maybe that’s something you could work to get fixed in your building,

여러분의 건물이나 도시, 국가에

in your city

고쳐달라고 요청할 수 있다고 생각해요.

or in your country.

Each one of us can make a small change,

우리 한 사람 한 사람은 작은 변화를 만들 수 있습니다.

but governments are supposed to make great changes.

하지만 정부는 큰 변화를 만들 수 있습니다.

I, and people like me, need help from public policymakers

저나 저와 같은 사람들은 정책 입안자들의 도움이 필요해요.

to be able to live with freedom and independence.

자유와 독립을 누리면서 살 수 있으려면요.

I wish that more people were like that old man,

더 많은 사람들이 그 노인분처럼 제게 묻고

asking me, and children like me, what we need

저와 같은 아동에게 무엇이 필요한지

and listening to our answers.

우리 말을 들어주었으면 좋겠습니다.

I told you at the beginning, I love football.

처음에 말씀드렸다시피 저는 축구를 좋아해요.

Just in case I wasn’t clear,

혹시 몰라서 확실히 말씀드리지만

I really love football, a lot.

저는 축구를 정말 좋아합니다.

And to me, the whole world is like a giant football team.

제게 전 세계는 큰 축구 팀 같아요.

But I took part in the campaign #EqualGame not only because I love the game

하지만 제가 #EqualGame이라는 캠페인에 참여했을 때

그저 이 경기가 좋아서가 아니라

but because I strongly believe

세계의 모든 사람이 참여할 수 있다고 굳게 믿었기 때문이에요.

that everyone can play all around the globe:

men, women,

남성이든 여성이든

abled, disabled,

장애인이든 아니든 어리든 나이가 들었든 전혀 상관 없죠.

young, old --

doesn’t matter.

All of them were able to find their way to play the game that they love.

이 사람들은 모두 자신이 사랑하는 경기를 즐길 방법을 찾을 수 있어요.

All they needed was the barriers to be removed.

이들에게 필요한 것은 장벽을 제거하는 것입니다.

So I see this world as a playground

저는 이 세상을 경기장이라고 생각해요.

where people and government are like a team,

사람들과 정부가 한 팀이 되어

and we need to make sure that everyone is able to play.

모든 사람이 경기에 참여할 수 있도록 하는 거죠.
