Hallo. I’m Keith. And I’m Vicki and in this video we have

some great tips for part one of the IELTS speaking test.
1
5800
4260
00:15
Part one of the test lasts four or five minutes and it’s a Q & A – question and answer.
2
15740
6120
00:21
In the first part of the test I'm going to ask you some questions about yourself.
3
21869
6021
00:27
The examiner will usually ask questions about three different topics – familiar topics
4
27890
6430
00:34
So what are familiar topics? They’re questions that are related to you and your day-to-day
5
34320
7259
00:41
life. These are just some of the different things
6
41579
3811
00:45
examiners can ask about. They’ll often ask questions about your experiences and things
7
45390
7130
00:52
you like and dislike. And sometimes they’ll ask about people in your country or town,
8
52520
6980
00:59
or about your culture. But normally the questions are about you and
9
59500
5940
01:05
your experiences. There are many different topics so they’re hard to predict.
10
65440
6600
01:12
But here’s some good news. You CAN predict the first topic. It’ll be about one of two
11
72040
7430
01:19
things: where you live or what you do. The first topic is always about one of these things.
12
79470
7130
01:26
If it’s where you live, they will ask you about your hometown or about your home.
13
86600
7380
01:33
What’s your favourite room in your home? My bedroom.
14
93980
6090
01:40
And why’s that? I like it.
15
100070
5380
01:45
And is it a large room? No.
16
105450
4510
01:49
Jay’s answers are too short here. One way to extend your answers is to give reasons.
17
109960
8210
01:58
I like my bedroom because it’s where I keep my pet spider.
18
118170
3870
02:02
Oh! That’s better. Jay gave a reason and explained
19
122040
4930
02:06
why he liked the room. Where are you from?
20
126970
3410
02:10
Sviyazhsk in Russia. It’s on the Volga and Sviyaga Rivers.
21
130380
4540
02:14
And is it a good place for children to live? Yes, because it’s a tightly-knit community
22
134920
5580
02:20
so everybody knows one another. And also, it has a lot of parks where they can play. Uhuh.
23
140500
6530
02:27
Ksenia’s answers were a good length. She added extra detail about her hometown and
24
147030
6940
02:33
gave two good reasons why it's a good place for children to live.
25
153970
4890
02:38
Now where you live is one possible first topic. The other one is what you do.
26
158860
7710
02:46
So let's talk about what you do. Do you work or are you a student?
27
166570
4880
02:51
I’m a student. Do you work or study?
28
171450
3430
02:54
I work. A short answer is fine for this question.
29
174880
5630
03:00
The examiner just wants to know so they can choose the best follow up questions. If you
30
180510
5790
03:06
say you’re a student they’ll ask questions about your studies. If you say you work, they’ll
31
186300
7240
03:13
ask about your job. Do you work or study?
32
193540
3880
03:17
I work for a large telecommunications company. It has 100,000 employees in 60 countries.
33
197420
6670
03:24
Our revenue's been declining for the last four years so I think they’re about to cut
34
204090
4850
03:28
back. We restructured a couple of years ago and I have a new boss. I don’t think she
35
208940
5050
03:33
likes me. She says I have to listen more ... Thank you. Now I’d like to talk about recycling.
36
213990
6970
03:40
This time, Jay’s answer was too long. Think about it like this. Part one lasts 4 to 5
37
220960
7780
03:48
minutes and the examiner wants to ask about 10 questions. That’s just under half a minute
38
228740
7350
03:56
per question. So you need to extend your answers a little, but not too much.
39
236090
8320
04:04
Do you work or are you a student? I’m a student.
40
244410
3210
04:07
And what are you studying at the moment? Animal sciences. I’m taking a three-year
41
247620
4570
04:12
course at the community college. I started last September.
42
252190
3050
04:15
Uhuh. And why did you choose this course? I’ve loved animals ever since I was a child
43
255240
7010
04:22
and one day I hope to become a vet. Ksenia’s answers were a good length and
44
262250
5430
04:27
she added the right amount of information – a little, but not too much.
45
267680
5780
04:33
After one or two minutes on the first topic, the examiner will move on to another one,
46
273460
5820
04:39
but you can’t predict what it will be. Now I’d like to talk about recycling. What
47
279280
6691
04:45
kinds of things do you recycle? Recycling. Recycling is important because
48
285971
7019
04:52
waste has a negative impact on the natural environment. Recycling conserves raw materials
49
292990
6720
04:59
and saves energy. Jay’s English is correct here, but he sounds
50
299710
8090
05:07
formal and academic. And he's not answering the question. The examiner asked what he recycles,
51
307800
9690
05:17
and he talked about recycling in general. Do you often recycle?
52
317490
6120
05:23
Yes, I separate my rubbish at home into plastics and paper, and oh yes, I also use recycled
53
323610
6750
05:30
paper for writing whenever possible. This is better. Ksenia is answering the question
54
330360
7029
05:37
directly and she sounds more natural and conversational. The examiner isn’t going to ask about abstract
55
337389
8471
05:45
theories or concepts in this part of the test, so stick to your experiences.
56
345860
7029
05:52
Now let’s look at another topic. When did you start to learn maths?
57
352889
5161
05:58
I think it was in primary school. Like most children we had to learn addition, subtraction
58
358050
6480
06:04
and the times tables at school. Another good answer. Ksenia added detail and
59
364530
6590
06:11
shows she knows some good vocabulary about maths.
60
371120
4750
06:15
Did you enjoy learning maths at school? No, I hated it. I didn’t like my teacher
61
375870
5810
06:21
because she didn’t explain things very well. Jay said ‘no’ here and that’s fine,
62
381680
6750
06:28
because he extended his answer and gave a reason. The examiner will score the quality
63
388430
6780
06:35
of his English, not his opinions. Is maths important?
64
395210
6120
06:41
Yes, because we use it in our daily lives. This isn’t a bad answer, but it would be
65
401330
6820
06:48
so much better with an example. Is maths important?
66
408150
5070
06:53
Yes, because we use it a lot in our daily lives. For instance, when we go shopping,
67
413220
5979
06:59
we need to know addition, so we can check the receipt and make sure we get the right
68
419199
4111
07:03
change. Ksenia extended her answer with an example.
69
423310
5560
07:08
Giving reasons is one way to extend your answer. Giving examples is another.
70
428870
6660
07:15
Another thing to understand is this part of the exam is more like an interview than a
71
435530
6020
07:21
real conversation. The examiner is following a script and each topic is separate from the
72
441550
7760
07:29
last. Is maths difficult for you to learn?
73
449310
4130
07:33
Oh no, not at all. Math is beautiful. Numbers are much easier to understand than people.
74
453440
7330
07:40
Now let’s talk about the sky. Do you like the sky?
75
460770
5850
07:46
The sky? You want to talk about the sky? Most of the time the examiner’s questions
76
466620
5150
07:51
will flow naturally, but sometimes, when they change topic, they may seem strange. If you
77
471770
8130
07:59
listen to the examiner, you’ll hear signals like this.
78
479900
4560
08:04
Let’s talk about fruit and vegetables.... Now I’d like to talk about smiling…
79
484460
8370
08:12
Let’s move on and talk about music... It’s OK to ask the examiner to repeat a
80
492830
8351
08:21
question. In part one, they won’t explain words, but they will repeat the question.
81
501181
7449
08:28
Sorry, could you say that again? Could you repeat that?
82
508630
4819
08:33
And that’s how part one of the IELTS exam works!
