Today we're going to be looking at two words

that will really help your English pronunciation

and listening skills.

They look the same,

and they almost sound the same.

But what's the difference?

I want you to really listen hard,

First, I'll say the sentence quickly.

‘Let's present the present to him.’ Hmm..

'มานำเสนอของขวัญให้เขากันเถอะ' อืม..

Okay, second time, but slower.

ครั้งที่สองแต่ช้ากว่า

Really listen.

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'มานำเสนอของขวัญให้เขากันเถอะ'

Okay, I'll show you.

โอเค ฉันจะแสดงให้คุณดู

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'มานำเสนอของขวัญให้เขากันเถอะ'

What words go in these two blanks?

สองช่องว่างนี้มีคำอะไรบ้าง?

Well, the answer is

คำตอบคือ

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'มานำเสนอของขวัญให้เขากันเถอะ'

Oh No! They look like the same word.

ไม่นะ! พวกเขาดูเหมือนคำเดียวกัน

Again, It's pronunciation  that's really important here.

ขอย้ำอีกครั้ง การออกเสียงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญมากที่นี่

It changes the meaning.

มันเปลี่ยนความหมาย

Let me explain in more detail.

Let's take a closer look at our two words.

We have ‘present’ and ‘present’.

เรามี 'ปัจจุบัน' และ 'ปัจจุบัน'

They're spelt the same way,

สะกดเหมือนกัน

but the pronunciation and  the meaning is different.

แต่การออกเสียงและความหมายต่างกัน

It's what we call a ‘Heteronym’.

มันคือสิ่งที่เราเรียกว่า 'Heteronym'

What is a ‘Heteronym’?

'Heteronym' คืออะไร?

It's where two words are spelled the same way,

คือคำสองคำที่สะกดเหมือนกัน

but the meaning and the  pronunciation is different.

แต่ความหมายและการออกเสียงต่างกัน

Let's look at the meaning and  pronunciation of our first word.

มาดูความหมายและการออกเสียงของคำแรกกัน

‘present’

'ปัจจุบัน'

‘present’ is a verb.

'ปัจจุบัน' เป็นคำกริยา

It means to give or reward  formally or in a ceremony.

แปลว่า ให้หรือให้รางวัลอย่างเป็นทางการหรือในพิธีการ.

And I have two sentences to show you.

และฉันมีสองประโยคที่จะแสดงให้คุณดู

The first one,

ข้อแรก

‘I like to present awards to my students.’

'ฉันชอบมอบรางวัลให้กับนักเรียนของฉัน'

I like to give my students awards.

ฉันชอบมอบรางวัลให้นักเรียน

The second sentence,

ประโยคที่สอง

‘A celebrity will present the prizes.’

'คนดังจะมอบรางวัล'

A celebrity will give you your prize.

คนดังจะให้รางวัลแก่คุณ

Now repeat after me.

ทำซ้ำตามฉันตอนนี้

‘present’

'ปัจจุบัน'

‘present’

'ปัจจุบัน'

Now let's have a look at our second word,

ทีนี้เรามาดูคำที่สองของเรากันดีกว่า

‘present’.

'ปัจจุบัน'

‘present’ is a noun.

'ปัจจุบัน' เป็นคำนาม

It means a gift something  that you give to someone.

มันหมายถึงของขวัญบางอย่างที่คุณมอบให้กับใครบางคน

And I have two sentences to show you this.

และผมมีสองประโยคที่จะแสดงให้คุณดู

‘Thank you for the wonderful present.’

'ขอบคุณสำหรับของขวัญอันแสนวิเศษนี้'

Thank you for this wonderful gift

ขอบคุณสำหรับของขวัญอันแสนวิเศษนี้

that you have given me.

ที่คุณมอบให้ฉัน

Number two,

ข้อสอง

‘I didn't get a present for my birthday.’

'ฉันไม่ได้รับของขวัญวันเกิดของฉัน'

I didn't get a gift for my birthday.

ฉันไม่ได้รับของขวัญวันเกิด

No one gave me anything.

ไม่มีใครให้อะไรฉันเลย

Okay, let's have a look at pronunciation,

เอาล่ะ มาดูการออกเสียงคำว่า

‘present’.

'ปัจจุบัน' กันดีกว่า

‘present’.

'ปัจจุบัน'.

Okay, let's look at our  main sentence one more time.

เอาล่ะ เรามาดูประโยคหลักของเรากันอีกครั้ง

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'มานำเสนอของขวัญให้เขากันเถอะ'

Let's ‘present’, let's give,  the ‘present’, the gift, to him.

มา 'นำเสนอ' กันเถอะ 'ของขวัญ' ของขวัญให้กับเขากันเถอะ

Okay, repeat after me.

โอเค ทำซ้ำตามฉัน

We'll go slowly first,

เราจะไปช้าๆ ก่อน

and then like a native speaker.

แล้วค่อยพูดแบบเจ้าของภาษา

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'มานำเสนอของขวัญให้เขากันเถอะ'

And faster now.

และเร็วขึ้นแล้ว
