Learn the English Heteronym PRESENT with Pronunciation and Practice Sentences

that will really help your English pronunciation

and listening skills.

They look the same,

ພວກເຂົາເບິ່ງຄືກັນ,

and they almost sound the same.

ແລະພວກເຂົາເກືອບສຽງດຽວກັນ.

But what's the difference?

because this one's tricky.

First, I'll say the sentence quickly.

ທໍາອິດ, ຂ້ອຍຈະເວົ້າປະໂຫຍກຢ່າງໄວວາ.

‘Let's present the present to him.’ Hmm..

'ໃຫ້ຂອງປະທານໃຫ້ແກ່ລາວ.' ຮືມ..

Okay, second time, but slower.

ໂອເຄ, ເທື່ອທີສອງ, ແຕ່ຊ້າກວ່າ.

Really listen.

ຟັງແທ້ໆ.

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'ໃຫ້ຂອງປະທານໃຫ້ແກ່ລາວ.'

Okay, I'll show you.

ຕົກລົງ, ຂ້ອຍຈະສະແດງໃຫ້ເຈົ້າເຫັນ.

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'ໃຫ້ຂອງປະທານໃຫ້ແກ່ລາວ.'

What words go in these two blanks?

ຄໍາໃດຢູ່ໃນສອງຊ່ອງຫວ່າງນີ້?

Well, the answer is

ຄໍາຕອບຄື

‘Let's present the present to him.’

'ໃຫ້ຂອງປະຈຸບັນນີ້ໃຫ້ເຂົາ.'

Oh No! They look like the same word.

ໂອ​ບໍ່! ພວກເຂົາເບິ່ງຄືວ່າເປັນຄໍາດຽວກັນ.

Again, It's pronunciation  that's really important here.

ອີກເທື່ອ ໜຶ່ງ, ມັນແມ່ນການອອກສຽງທີ່ ສຳ ຄັນແທ້ໆຢູ່ທີ່ນີ້.

It changes the meaning.

ມັນປ່ຽນຄວາມຫມາຍ.

Let me explain in more detail.

ໃຫ້ຂ້ອຍອະທິບາຍລາຍລະອຽດເພີ່ມເຕີມ.

Let's take a closer look at our two words.

ຂໍໃຫ້ພິຈາລະນາເບິ່ງສອງຄໍາຂອງພວກເຮົາ.

We have ‘present’ and ‘present’.

ພວກເຮົາມີ 'ປະຈຸບັນ' ແລະ 'ປະຈຸບັນ'.

They're spelt the same way,

ພວກມັນສະກົດຄືກັນ,

but the pronunciation and  the meaning is different.

ແຕ່ການອອກສຽງ ແລະ ຄວາມໝາຍແຕກຕ່າງກັນ.

It's what we call a ‘Heteronym’.

ມັນແມ່ນສິ່ງທີ່ພວກເຮົາເອີ້ນວ່າ 'Heteronym'.

What is a ‘Heteronym’?

'Heteronym' ແມ່ນຫຍັງ?

It's where two words are spelled the same way,

ມັນເປັນບ່ອນທີ່ສອງຄໍາຖືກສະກົດຄືກັນ,

but the meaning and the  pronunciation is different.

ແຕ່ຄວາມຫມາຍແລະການອອກສຽງແມ່ນແຕກຕ່າງກັນ.

Let's look at the meaning and  pronunciation of our first word.

ຂໍໃຫ້ພິຈາລະນາຄວາມຫມາຍແລະການອອກສຽງຂອງຄໍາທໍາອິດຂອງພວກເຮົາ.

‘present’

'ປະຈຸບັນ'

‘present’ is a verb.

'ປະຈຸບັນ' ແມ່ນຄໍາກິລິຍາ.

It means to give or reward  formally or in a ceremony.

ຫມາຍເຖິງການໃຫ້ຫຼືລາງວັນຢ່າງເປັນທາງການຫຼືໃນພິທີ.

And I have two sentences to show you.

ແລະຂ້ອຍມີສອງປະໂຫຍກທີ່ຈະສະແດງໃຫ້ທ່ານເຫັນ.

The first one,

ອັນທໍາອິດ,

‘I like to present awards to my students.’

'ຂ້ອຍຢາກມອບລາງວັນໃຫ້ນັກຮຽນຂອງຂ້ອຍ.'

I like to give my students awards.

ຂ້ອຍມັກໃຫ້ລາງວັນນັກຮຽນຂອງຂ້ອຍ.

The second sentence,

ປະໂຫຍກທີສອງ,

‘A celebrity will present the prizes.’

'ຄົນດັງຈະນໍາສະເຫນີລາງວັນ.'

A celebrity will give you your prize.

ຄົນດັງຈະໃຫ້ລາງວັນຂອງເຈົ້າ.

Now repeat after me.

ດຽວນີ້ເຮັດຊ້ຳຫຼັງຂ້ອຍ.

‘present’

'ປະຈຸບັນ'

‘present’

'ປະຈຸບັນ'

Now let's have a look at our second word,

ຕອນນີ້ໃຫ້ເບິ່ງຄໍາທີສອງຂອງພວກເຮົາ,

‘present’.

'ປະຈຸບັນ'.

‘present’ is a noun.

'ປະຈຸບັນ' ແມ່ນຄໍານາມ.

It means a gift something  that you give to someone.

ມັນໝາຍເຖິງຂອງຂວັນທີ່ເຈົ້າມອບໃຫ້ຜູ້ໃດຜູ້ໜຶ່ງ.

And I have two sentences to show you this.

ແລະຂ້ອຍມີສອງປະໂຫຍກທີ່ຈະສະແດງໃຫ້ທ່ານເຫັນ.

‘Thank you for the wonderful present.’

'ຂອບໃຈສຳລັບຂອງຂວັນທີ່ປະເສີດ.'

Thank you for this wonderful gift

ຂອບໃຈສຳລັບຂອງຂວັນອັນປະເສີດນີ້

that you have given me.

ທີ່ເຈົ້າໄດ້ມອບໃຫ້ຂ້ອຍ.

Number two,

ອັນທີສອງ,

‘I didn't get a present for my birthday.’

I didn't get a gift for my birthday.

Okay, let's have a look at pronunciation,

Okay, let's look at our  main sentence one more time.

We'll go slowly first,

and then like a native speaker.
