Now, in this lesson I’m going to talk about singular and plural nouns.

이번 강의에서는 단수 명사와 복수 명사에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

Okay. Singular means one.

좋아요. 단수(Singular)는 하나라는 뜻이다.

And plural means more than one or many.

그리고 복수형은 하나 이상 또는 다수를 의미합니다.

Okay. So let’s look at the board.

좋아요. 그럼 보드를 살펴보겠습니다.

This part is showing singular nouns.

이 부분은 단수명사를 보여주고 있습니다.

Okay, remember, singular means one.

좋아요, 기억하세요. 단수는 1을 의미합니다.

Okay.

So when the noun is singular, we put ‘a’ or ‘an’.

좋아요.

그래서 명사가 단수일 때는 'a'나 'an'을 붙입니다.

So let’s look.

그럼 살펴보자.

“a ring”

"반지"

That means one ring. “a ring”

는 하나의 반지를 의미합니다. “반지”

“a dog” Again, one dog.

“개” 또, 개 한 마리.

“a teacher” One teacher.

“선생님” 한 선생님.

“an apple” “an apple”

“사과” “사과”

One apple.

사과 하나.

“an egg” “an egg”

So again, one…. noun is singular.

그럼 다시 한 번… 명사는 단수입니다.

Okay. Now over here, we have plural nouns.

좋아요. 이제 여기에는 복수 명사가 있습니다.

Plural means more than one. Two, three, four, and so on.

복수형은 하나 이상을 의미합니다. 둘, 셋, 넷 등등.

So, many. Okay.

그래서, 많은. 좋아요.

So, when we have a plural noun, we have to,

따라서 복수 명사가 있을 때는

don’t forget, we have to put ‘s’ or ‘es’.

반드시 's'나 'es'를 붙여야 한다는 점을 잊지 마세요.

Again, if there’s more than one,

또, 2개 이상일 경우,

if the noun is plural,

you have to put ‘s’ or ‘es’.

Now the nouns here, you just have to add an ‘s’.

Okay, and we’re going to go through them right now.

“two rings”.

Okay, we had one ring. “a ring”.

Now we have “two rings.” With an ‘s’.

We had “a dog”.

The plural is “three dogs”.

Don’t forget the ‘s’.

Okay, you must not forget that.

“an apple”. That’s one apple.

Then we have plural. “five apples”

Okay. And the last one.

Don’t forget ‘s’. “six eggs”

Okay. I really need you to remember that.

Now we have some more nouns.

These nouns are a little bit different.

Uhhh, when they’re singular it’s the same.

아, 단수일 때도 똑같습니다.

You put ‘a’ or ‘an’ in front.

앞에 'a' 또는 'an'을 붙입니다.

But when you want to make them plural, you have to add ‘es’.

하지만 복수형으로 만들고 싶을 때는 'es'를 붙여야 합니다.

Remember, I said, you can add ‘s’ or ‘es’ to make a noun plural…more than one.

기억하세요, 명사를 복수형으로 만들기 위해 's'나 'es'를 추가할 수 있다고 말했습니다.

So again, these nouns you have to add ‘es’.

따라서 이 명사에는 'es'를 추가해야 합니다.

So let’s go through them one more time.

Okay. So we have “a bus”.

“a bus”

Again, that means one bus.

“five kisses” “five kisses”

Add the ‘es’.

'es'를 추가하세요.

And the last one.

그리고 마지막 것.

“an ax” “an ax”

“도끼” “도끼”

Okay, we have “six axes”. “six axes”

좋습니다. “6개의 도끼”가 있습니다. “6개의 축”

So don’t forget. We have to put ‘es’ to make these nouns plural.

그러니 잊지 마세요. 이 명사를 복수형으로 만들려면 'es'를 붙여야 합니다.

Okay, let’s move on to the next part.

So, how do we know if we should put ‘s’ or ‘es’ to make the noun plural?

그러면 명사를 복수형으로 만들기 위해 's' 또는 'es'를 넣어야 하는지 어떻게 알 수 있나요?

Well, for most nouns, you just have to put ‘s’.

글쎄요, 대부분의 명사에는 's'만 넣으면 됩니다.

Okay, for most of them.

But, for some, you have to put ‘es’. And how do we know?

하지만 어떤 경우에는 'es'를 넣어야 합니다. 그리고 우리는 어떻게 알 수 있나요?

Let’s look at the board. We have some nouns.

The first one is “church”. Okay.

“Church” ends in ‘ch’.

“교회”는 'ch'로 끝납니다.

So if the noun ends in ‘ch’, you have to put ‘es’.

Okay. So it becomes “churches”.

So again, if the noun ends in ‘ch’,

add ‘es’ at the end to make it plural.

The same goes for the next word “brush”.

다음 단어 "brush"도 마찬가지입니다.

You’ll notice “brush” ends in ‘sh’. Okay.

"brush"가 'sh'로 끝나는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 좋아요.

So if it ends in ‘sh’, same thing, we add ‘es’ at the end to make it plural.

따라서 'sh'로 끝나는 경우에도 마찬가지로 끝에 'es'를 추가하여 복수형으로 만듭니다.

Okay. The next word is 'fox'.

좋아요. 다음 단어는 '여우'입니다.

We have the letter ‘x’ at the end. Okay.

끝에 문자 'x'가 있습니다. 좋아요.

All nouns that end in ‘x’, we have to put ‘es’ to make it plural.

'x'로 끝나는 모든 명사는 복수형으로 만들기 위해 'es'를 붙여야 합니다.

Okay, so, ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘x’.

좋아요, 그럼 'ch', 'sh', 'x'입니다.

If the noun ends with these, put ‘es’.

명사가 이것들로 끝나면 'es'를 붙입니다.

And the last one is “dress”.

그리고 마지막은 '드레스'입니다.

Okay, we have ‘ss’ at the end.

좋습니다. 끝에 'ss'가 있습니다.

Same thing.

같은 것.

Put ‘es’ at the end to make it plural.

끝에 'es'를 붙여 복수형으로 만듭니다.

Okay. “dresses”

Again, if it ends in ‘ss’ put ‘es’.

Okay, so please, don’t forget ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘x’, ‘ss’, we must put ‘es’ at the end.

좋습니다. 'ch', 'sh', 'x', 'ss'를 잊지 마세요. 끝에 'es'를 넣어야 합니다.

Most of the other nouns we just add ‘s’.

대부분의 다른 명사에는 's'만 추가합니다.

Okay. Now we have some special nouns on this side.

“Potato, tomato, volcano”.

Now, most nouns that end in ‘o’, like “photo”,

all we have to do is add an ‘s’ to make it plural.

's'를 추가하여 복수형으로 만들기만 하면 됩니다.

“photos”. Okay.

"사진". 좋아요.

But these are special because we actually have to put ‘es’ at the end… to make them…plural.

하지만 이것들은 특별합니다. 왜냐하면 복수형으로 만들기 위해서는 실제로 끝에 'es'를 붙여야 하기 때문입니다.

Okay. So we have “potatoes, tomatoes, volcanoes”.

Again, these are a little bit special.

For most nouns that end in ‘o’, we just add ‘s’.

“class” ends with an ‘s’. So what do we put?

Okay. So again the plural is “three classes”.

Do we have to put anything? No.

No ‘s’ or ‘es’ because this is singular. There’s just one lion.

“a lion”

“사자”

“six hats” “six hats”

We have to put an ‘s’. “six hats”

's'를 넣어야 합니다. “모자 여섯 개”

Okay. The next noun is “seven match”.

좋아요. 다음 명사는 “일곱 개의 일치”입니다.

What do we put?

우리는 무엇을 넣나요?

Well, we have a ‘ch’. So we have to put “matches”.

음, 'ch'가 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 "성냥"을 넣어야합니다.

“seven matches” “seven matches”

"일곱 개" "일곱 개"

Okay. And the last one is “one bat”.

알겠습니다. 그리고 마지막은 '한 배트'입니다.

“one bat”.

We do not put an ‘s’ or ‘es’ because again, it’s just one.

We don’t have to put anything after ‘bat’.
