In this video, I'm going to talk to you about intensifiers and mitigators.

이번 영상에서는 Intensifier와 Mitigator에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

Now what are those?

이제 그것들은 무엇입니까?

Don't be scared of by their names.

그들의 이름을 두려워하지 마십시오.

Intensifiers are simply words that will make adjectives stronger.

강조어는 단순히 형용사를 강하게 만드는 단어입니다 .

They will give adjectives more power or more emphasis.

For example, two very common intensifiers in English are ‘really’ and ‘very’.

예를 들어, 영어에서 매우 흔한 두 가지 강조어는 'really'와 'very'입니다.

Mitigators on the other hand, make the adjectives weaker like the words b'rather' or fairly'.

반면 완화제는 b'rather' 또는 fair'라는 단어와 같이 형용사를 약하게 만듭니다.

But we're gonna go into a little more detail.

Let's start with intensifiers.

And I have a list of intensifies for you.

Of course these are not all of them, but it's a good start because they are very common

in English.

Let's have a look.

The adjectives in this sentence is 'interesting' and we make it stronger with the intensifier,

It's really interesting.

very For example, I'm very happy to learn English.

예를 들어, 저는 영어를 배우는 것이 매우 기쁩니다.

The adjective is ‘happy’.

형용사는 '행복하다'입니다.

And we give it more power with the intensifier.

그리고 인텐시파이어로 더 많은 힘을 줍니다.

very I am very happy to learn English.

매우 나는 영어를 배우게 되어 매우 기쁩니다.

Other intensifiers include absolutely.

다른 강화제는 절대적으로 포함됩니다.

For example, 'Your new dress is absolutely amazing'.

예를 들어, '당신의 새 드레스는 정말 멋져요'.

‘extremely’ Like

'매우' '

‘It's extremely cold outside.”

‘incredibly’ For example, ‘Your son is incredibly smart.’

‘completely’ ‘My wallet is completely empty.’

Now for this last sentence, the adjective is old and II intensifier is enough.

It's a special case because as you can hear and see, ‘enough’ always comes after the

Intensifiers are commonly used with comparative and superlative adjectives.

강조어는 일반적으로 비교급 및 최상급 형용사와 함께 사용됩니다.

For example, with comparative adjectives, we often use 'much'.

예를 들어, 비교 형용사에는 '많이'를 자주 사용합니다.

For example, ‘He runs much faster than me.’

예를 들어, '그는 나보다 훨씬 빨리 달린다.' '

‘Faster’ is the comparative form of the adjective ‘fast’.

빠르다'는 형용사 '빠르다'의 비교급 형태입니다.

And to intensify the comparison, we use the intensifier ‘much’.

그리고 비교를 강화하기 위해 강조어 '많이'를 사용합니다.

So he runs much faster than me.

그래서 그는 나보다 훨씬 빨리 달린다.

We also use ‘a lot’.

우리는 또한 '많이'를 사용합니다.

For example, ‘This red bag is a lot heavier than this white bag’.

‘heavier’ is the comparative form of the adjective ‘heavy’.

And we make it even more powerful with ‘a lot heavier’.

And we also use ‘far’.

그리고 '멀리'도 사용합니다.

For example, ‘She is far taller than me’.

예를 들어 '그녀는 나보다 훨씬 크다'.

‘taller’ is the comparative of ‘tall’.

'키가 크다'는 '키가 크다'의 비교급입니다.

We make it more powerful with ‘far’.

'멀리'로 더 강력하게 만듭니다.

‘Far taller than me’.

'나보다 키가 훨씬 크다'.

Now with superlative adjectives, we can use ‘easily’.

이제 최상급 형용사로 '쉽게'를 사용할 수 있습니다.

For example, ‘This is easily the best restaurant in town’.

예를 들어, '이곳은 이 동네에서 단연 최고의 레스토랑입니다'.

‘best’ is the superlative form of the adjective ‘good’.

'최고'는 형용사 '좋다'의 최상급 형태입니다.

And we make it even more powerful by saying, ‘easily the best restaurant’.

그리고 '가벼운 맛집'이라는 말을 더해 더욱 강력하게 만든다.

And we also use ‘by far’.

그리고 'by far'도 사용합니다.

For example, ‘Sarah is by far the smartest girl in class’.

예를 들어, 'Sarah는 반에서 단연코 가장 똑똑한 소녀입니다.'

Let's move on to mitigators.

완화 장치로 넘어 갑시다.

Now mitigators are the opposite of intensifiers.

이제 mitigator는 intensifier의 반대입니다.

They weaken the adjectives.

그들은 형용사를 약화시킵니다.

Let's look at a few examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

Mitigators include ‘fairly’.

완화에는 '적당히'가 포함됩니다.

For example, ‘It's fairly sunny today’.

예를 들어, '오늘은 꽤 맑습니다'.

The adjective ‘sunny’ is weakened by the mitigator ‘fairly’.

형용사 'sunny'는 완화제 'fairly'에 의해 약화됩니다.

So it's not sunny. It's a bit less than sunny.

Other mitigator, ‘rather’.

다른 완화제, '대신'.

So when I say, ‘I'm rather tired’, I'm not exactly tired.

I'm a bit less.

The adjective is less powerful because of this ‘rather’.

Other example, ‘pretty’.

‘It's pretty expensive’.

Which means it's not expensive.

It's a little bit less.

Or 'quite'. Like, ‘The movie was quite good’.

The adjective ‘good’ is less powerful because of this ‘quite’.

형용사 'good'은 이 'quite' 때문에 덜 강력합니다. '

Now be very careful because if you use ‘quite’ with an extreme adjective such as ‘terrible’,

끔찍한', '

‘perfect’, ‘enormous’, or ‘excellent’

완벽한', '엄청난', '훌륭한'과 같은 극단적인 형용사와 함께 'quite'를 사용하면

quite means ‘absolutely’.

'절대적으로'를 의미하므로 매우 조심하세요.

It becomes an intensifier.

For example, ‘She is quite gorgeous.’

Means she is absolutely gorgeous.

It's more powerful because of the intensified ‘quite’.

So be very careful when you use ‘quite’ because depending on the adjective that you

choose, it has a different meaning.

And it can be either an intensifier or a mitigator.

Let's move on.

Just as intensifiers, mitigators can be used with comparative adjectives.

강화제와 마찬가지로 완화제는 비교급 형용사와 함께 사용할 수 있습니다.

Let's look at a few examples.

We can use ‘a bit’.

우리는 '조금'을 사용할 수 있습니다.

For example, ‘He's a bit faster than me’.

When you say, “He's a bit faster than me,”

"그는 나보다 조금 빠르다"라고 말하면

it's less powerful than “He's faster than me.”

"그는 나보다 빠르다"보다 덜 강력합니다.

So ‘a bit’ mitigates. It weakens ‘faster’.

그래서 '조금' 완화됩니다. '빠르게' 약해집니다.

Same goes for ‘rather’.

'오히려'도 마찬가지입니다.

For example, ‘This dress is rather nicer than that dress’.

예를 들어, '이 옷이 저 옷보다 훨씬 예쁘다'.

It weakens the comparison - the nicer.

And finally we can say, ‘slightly’.

For example, ‘My car is slightly older than your car’.

So it's just a little bit older than your car.

It's weak because of this mitigator.

Let's now move on to practice.

I want things to be very clear so I have a few example sentences for you guys.

And I want you to tell me if you see an intensifier or a mitigator.

Let's have a look.

First, ‘It's a very interesting game’.

Now what's the adjective in that sentence?

‘interesting’ of course.

What about ‘very’.

Is it an intensifier or a mitigator?

It's an intensifier of course.

It's a very interesting game.

It's more powerful thanks to this ‘very’.

The second sentence, ‘She cooks fairly good pasta’.

두 번째 문장 '그녀는 파스타를 꽤 잘 요리한다'.

Now the adjective in this sentence is ‘good’.

이제 이 문장의 형용사는 '좋다'입니다.

I'm sure you know.

나는 당신이 알고 있다고 확신합니다.

What about ‘fairly’?

'적당한'은 어떻습니까?

Is it an intensifier or a mitigator?

강화제인가 완화제인가?

It's a mitigator guys.

완화제입니다 여러분.

The adjective ‘good’ is less powerful because of ‘fairly’.

형용사 '좋은'은 '공정한' 때문에 덜 강력합니다.

‘She cooks fairly good pasta’.

'그녀는 꽤 좋은 파스타를 요리합니다'.

The third example, ‘He's quite brilliant at speaking English’.

세 번째 예는 '그는 영어를 아주 잘합니다'입니다.

The adjective is ‘brilliant’.

형용사는 '찬란하다'입니다.

Now just a hint.

이제 힌트입니다.

It's an extreme adjective.

극단적인 형용사입니다.

‘brilliant’ is a very strong adjective, so what about ‘quite’?

'brilliant'는 매우 강한 형용사입니다. 그렇다면 'quite'는 어떨까요?

Is it an intensifier or a mitigator?

강화제인가 완화제인가?

It is an intensifier of course because the adjective is extreme.

물론 형용사가 극단이기 때문에 강조합니다.

Next example.

‘She's a bit younger than I am’.

The adjective is actually a comparative adjective in this sentence.

형용사는 실제로 이 문장에서 비교 형용사입니다.

'a bit' acts as a mitigator of course.

조금'은 물론 완화제 역할을합니다.

And finally, ‘My dog is much fatter than my cat’.

그리고 마지막으로 '내 개가 내 고양이보다 훨씬 뚱뚱하다'.

Again, it's a comparative adjective - ‘fatter’.

다시 말하지만, 그것은 비교급 형용사입니다 - '더 뚱뚱하다'.

And what about ‘much’?
